Can anyone suggest (and link me to) a good ROM for Dream/G1 that doesn't eat battery like CM6 did to me and still runs fast and smooth with the main components (i.e.- MMS, SMS, Gmail, etc.) working?

Background:
I don't have the means to pay for internet separately, so I rooted my Evo to Wirelessly tether 4G (Not 3G). I used unrevoked method. I then downloaded CM7 using ROM Manager after backing up all my data. When I rebooted into CM7, the phone got stuck on the CM7 demo screen forever. I took out the battery and rebooted my phone. My phone is stuck on Android 2.1 and I can't tether. I can't update the software either.
Objective:
I need restore the newest version of Android, Install CM7, and be able to tether 4G wirelessly. Please help.

There is no "best ROM". Each has it's own benefits and downsides. Testing a few for yourself is the best way to determine which is ideal for you.
