Some of you are familiar with the adb install command.
Is there an equivalent of it in the terminal emulator?
Hi,
Adb is used from the computer and terminal emulator is used from the phone.
What are you trying to do?
I'm trying to install an app without using astro.
your best choise would be
cd to the location of the apk file and use
adb install appname.apk
or adb install C:\folder\appname.apk
think thats the correct way im not sure how you can install it in the terminal i knwowho to remove it.. but not install :/
Install .apk via Terminal EMulator
1) Place the .apk on the root of your SD card (for simplicity)
2) Type "su"
3) cd into the destination of your .apk (in this case it will be cd /sdcard)
4) Use "install "name of .apk" /"destination"/"name of .apk"
su
cd /sdcard
install com.makemobile.coursepro.apk /system/app/com.makemobile.coursepro.apk
further example:
install "space" com.makemobile.coursepro.apk "space" /system/app/com.makemobile.coursepro.apk
This will install the app on your phone using the Terminal Emulator. The destination location can change as well.
Additional help: http://www.busybox.net/downloads/BusyBox.html
On the flip side, could you uninstall from the ext2 partition this way?
install on/from ext2
not sure...I'll looks into this. I had my apps and data on my sd however, it seemed a little buggy and inconsistant. It may have been due to using original G1 1gb class 2 card.
-let me know if you find out first.

cd is a command, meaning "change directory". Which is used to move your location on the system.

cd is a *nix command , it is short for 'change directory' and it... changes directory

it depends on what the app is
your best bet would be to get an app called 'Astro file manager' from the market
Its quite easy, so I won't go into further detail
Which to be honest is a fair trade

Some people have mentioned the `install' command from BusyBox, but this won't quite do what you probably want. To invoke the full Android package installation experience--the complete equivalent of `adb install'--you're looking for `pm install'. It takes the same arguments that `adb install' does, checks signatures, creates the appropriate user accounts, etc. so the package is installed the Android way. You can also use `pm uninstall' to remove a package (and as with `adb install', the "-k" option keeps its data around).
The `am' and `pm' commands are both underdocumented, but can be terribly useful. `am' can issue arbitrary Intents, including some Extra values. `pm' has other features not mentioned here, but which are shown in the help text.

'pm install' often fails with [INSTALL_FAILED_INSUFFICIENT_STORAGE]
which used to frustrate me no end ..
simple shell script
Code:
am start -a android.intent.action.VIEW -t application/vnd.android.package-archive -d file://$1
just pass the full path e.g
sh /sdcard/installapk.sh /sdcard/theapp.apk
and it pops up the Android Package installer

Interesting. I wonder if that's related to A2SD or a particular implementation, and pm getting confused as a result? Still, I like the idea of sending the VIEW intent to bring up the package installer. Good snippet.
I just cp the files to /system/sd/app/
from Windows Command prompt, and after switching to the folder containing the .apk file, type:
adb install filename.apk
if it is a reinstall:
adb install -r filename.apk
you could also push the file to the app folder. I use this method to push system apk:
adb remount <<<< you have to remount since you're going to mess with a sys folder
adb push filename.apk /system/app
seriously useful thread... especially after for some weird reason certain apps fail to install using the default Android installer. *cough* Radiant *cough*
Thanks for the help guys. Btw install command doesn't work. To clear things out for some clueless person like I am :

Thanks big time. Installed perfectly although apk won't open...just got to find one that will.
I was reading the threads in the dream forum and found his progress and instructions. I added them to my wiki so they can be continually edited and updated as new methods are found. I did not have any part in this but I noticed that there was not a formal post here about it yet so I decided to make one.
http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Magic_Rooting
Please feel free to thank him with some nesquik if you find this helpful!
I was pasting the new instructions here every time they changed but they seem to change often. Please visit the above url to see the current instructions. They were placed on the the wiki so anyone could make edits and changes to them, which is useless if this post needs to be updated each time. I wish vbulletin had some sort of wiki quote that could auto read that page and insert it here for me
Great!
If would be great if this post were a sticky. It also would be nice it the post was updated to include the instructions here as well.
Thanks,
Anders
Just quoting the solution here..
First of all, everyone owes Haykuro a great big thanks for working on this and helping create the solution without even owning a magic. The following is his method just reworded slightly.
1. To gain root access on your HTC Magic/Sapphire you will need to download the magic-root-boot.img zip file and unzip it so that you have boot-new.img in a location you can find.
2. On your device, enter the bootloader by trying one of the following
* Turn off your device and while it is off hold down home while you press power.
* Turn off your device and while it is off hold down volume down while pressing power
3. Make sure your usb cable is inserted and you have Fastboot installed and ready to use.
4. Type the following commands on your desktop (not on the device):
Code:
fastboot boot boot-new.img
5. wait for the following to flash and the phone to reboot:
Code:
downloading 'boot-new.img'... OKAY
Code:
booting... OKAY
6. make sure you have ADB installed and run the following commands from your desktop (not on the device):
Code:
adb push boot-new.img /sdcard/boot-new.img
Code:
adb shell flash_image boot /sdcard/boot-new.img
anyone tried this?
I was going to post the actual text here but the reason for doing it in the wiki is because the methods seem to change very often (the g1 method changed almost daily for a while). I would still recommend viewing the instructions on the wiki before performing the method to be sure they are the same at the time of use.
Full procedure so far!
1. Download boot-new.img.zip from http://www.droiddeveloper.com/hrbuilds/boot-new.img.zip
2. extract boot-new.img to computer.
3. Download recovery-new.img.zip from http://www.droiddeveloper.com/hrbuilds/recovery-new.img.zip
4. extract recovery-new.img to computer.
5. power off device
6. hold BACK+POWER (or VOLUME_DOWN+POWER) to boot into bootloader.
7.
Code:
[b]fastboot boot boot-new.img[/b]
wait for device to boot.
[b]adb push boot-new.img /sdcard/boot-new.img[/b]
[b]adb push recovery-new.img /sdcard/recovery-new.img[/b]
[b]adb shell flash_image boot /sdcard/boot-new.img[/b]
[b]adb shell flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-new.img[/b]
[b]adb shell reboot[/b]
you now have root build, and can flash whatever build you like (test keys and all)
First post and wiki updated to show these changes in more detail.
Hi,
I have a french Magic and I test this solution.
I have a problem, when I use the adb shell, I am "root", but when I use a terminal shell on the phone I'm not "root". I use "id" for my test.
How can I do ?
Thanks.
Edit : Ok I found the problem.
I make these commands after in adb shell:
# mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
# cd system
# cd bin
# cat sh > su
# chmod 4755 su
# sync
# reboot
Thanks

i think i have to install fastboot or open it. but i cant do nothing of both. if i click on the fastboot exe it blobs open and fast close again.
under windows xp all ok
under windows vista no!!!
I have compiled this guide from the other one posted on this forum, the discussion therein, and my own knowledge. If you have any suggestions on making it better or to correct any mistakes I may have made please let me know.
This guide is intended for Windows and includes detailed instructions. It will cover the steps necessary to root, flash the new recovery image, create a full backup. This will work with software versions 1.29.651.1 and 1.56.651.2 (aka Android 1.5). If you have updated to 2.1 please following this guide here. I am not responsible for any damage done to your phone using this guide. Root at your own risk.
I have put to together a video on YouTube for you to follow along as well. The version numbers of certain files are now outdated in the video so change file names as necessary.
If you own a non-Sprint Hero, you will need to do some extra steps. Follow the guide in the How to Root Non-Sprint CDMA Hero thread.
Step 1: Download the Android SDK from http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html The Windows file is called android-sdk_r06-windows.zip. Extract the files to your C: drive so that you now have the folder C:\android-sdk-windows
Step 2: Download the asroot2 exploit file from http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=244212&d=1257621154 Extract asroot2.zip to C:\android-sdk-windows\tools folder.
Step 3: Download the Hero recovery image from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4898505&postcount=1g Place this file in C:\android-sdk-windows\tools as well.
Step 4: Make sure USB Debugging is off by going to Settings>Applications>Development. Now connect the phone to your PC via USB cable.
Step 5: Mount your sdcard; Browse to the HTC Sync folder and install HTC Sync on your pc. After it is done installing unmount the sdcard then enable your USB debugging.
Step 6: Open a command prompt by clicking the Start button and typing cmd into the search box and pressing enter or found under All Programs>Accessories.
Step 7: You will now enter a series of commands which I will place inside code boxes to indicate the entire command. You may copy and then paste them into the command prompt window by right clicking. Only enter one command at a time.
1:
Code:
cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools
2:
Code:
adb devices
If you've been following this guide you will see your phone's serial number. If you get "device not found" error, you either need to make sure you the drivers were properly installed or make sure you enable USB debugging AFTER you connect the USB cable. Continue on once you get the proper phone serial output.
3:
Code:
adb push asroot2 /data/local/
4:
Code:
adb shell
5:
Code:
chmod 0755 /data/local/asroot2
6:
Code:
/data/local/asroot2 /system/bin/sh
You should see an output that says:
$ /data/local/asroot2 /system/bin/sh
[+] Using newer pope_inode_info layout
Opening: /proc/857/fd/3
SUCCESS: Enjoy the shell.
#Now for a few last commands.
7:
Code:
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
8:
Code:
cd /system/bin
9:
Code:
cat sh > su
10:
Code:
chmod 4755 su
You are now officially rooted. A few more steps and you will have flashed the recovery image.
11:
Code:
exit
12:
Code:
exit
13:
Code:
adb push recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2.img /sdcard
Pushing is equivalent of copy the file to the root of your sdcard. By the time you finished reading this it should be done. You'll know its done because the ouput will say something like transferred X bytes in X secs.
14:
Code:
adb shell reboot
This will cause the phone to restart automatically. Wait till it is fully booted to continue.
15:
Code:
adb shell
16:
Code:
su
17:
Code:
cd /sdcard/
18:
Code:
flash_image recovery recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2.img
FLASHING TO THE RECOVERY TAKES SEVERAL SECONDS-- BE PATIENT. ENTER THE NEXT COMMAND ONLY AFTER THE COMMAND PROMPT RETURNS TO THE # (ROOT SYMBOL).
19:
Code:
reboot recovery
Step 8: This is the last command; you may now close the cmd prompt. This will cause your phone to boot into recovery mode; it should take no longer than 30 secs. The third option on the list is "- Backup/Restore"; select it. Now, select the first option "- Nand backup". The phone will prompt you to press HOME to confirm which is want you want to do. The backup will begin. You will see the screen say, "Performing backup : .........." When done, the bottom of the screen will say "Backup complete!" and you will be given the menu options again. Go back to the main menu and select reboot system. Rebooting your phone after installing the new recovery image may take several minutes.
Step 9: Once your phone is fully booted, mount the sdcard. You will see a folder called "nandroid"; I highly recommend you copy this to your pc in case you lose your sdcard data or reformat it. Your phone is rooted, 100% backed up, and ready to install a custom rom if you wish!
wow dude,
instructions worked great on Win7
i was able to download the missing usb_drivers by running SDK Setup in C:\android-sdk-windows, and selecting the usb driver from the available packages. I was unable to download the index for the SDK Setup program until I enabled "force http://" in the settings menu.
had to copy over asroot again after i ran SDK Setup (that program deleted it from the directory)
your instructions worked like a charm. total time spent rooting this thing after finding your post: 18 minutes.
(you might want to add a line there in the "mount and copy over the zip file step" to backup the nandroid folder from your SDCard to your comp just as a backup of your stock phone image)
anyway.. cheers!

Heh, thanks for the misspell heads up. I did my rooting from Win7 pc; it automatically installed correct drivers for me. To check go to the Control Panel>View devices and printers. You see one device named "Android Phone". Otherwise as far as Ive heard installing HTC Sync installs proper drivers.

When I go to apply the rom I get an white screen with skateboarding androids on the bottom and the prompt to erase data yes/no. I press the home key and the Hero reboots without asking to "Apply sdcard:choose zip". This is done from the boot menu. Does the rom load automatically? Did I do something wrong? I got root with no problem. A tip; to make it easier and to avoid spelling mistakes copy and paste the rooting commands from the instructions. Made it go faster too. Thanks in advance.
Never mind. I held down Home and Power at

yuck... break up your sentences, that's alot of crap to throw on someone all at once... and the bold doesn't help it any.
check to see if you have the custom recovery installed....
-turn off phone

-should search for some stuff then give three options
-press "home" to enter recovery image
do you see "!" and a phone.... does it just hang or do you see a green/yellow menu?
At the end of his post he says he figured it out. He wasn't holding down home key
None of this is working for me at all... I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but every time I enter ANY of the commands into the prompt all I get is "cannot find the path specified".
For reference, i have done everything in this guide to the letter, everything is downloaded, unzipped to the correct location, USB drivers installed, etc etc. Not sure what's wrong.
EDIT: I figured it out.. user error, awesome. Worked great, thanks for this!

you converted your sd card to fat32,ext2,swap and now the apps are looking for the program on your sd card,
turn off your phone
take out sd card
turn on phone
uninstall app
turn off phone
put in sd card
turn on phone
reinstall app
this should fix you
I have problem with CWM v5.8.3.4, while i flash, restore, back, everything it still back to recovery mode, can`t do nothing.
CWM v5.8.3.4 -- Here is your problem, you used ROM manager to update recovery. There are red flags on this pretty much everywhere Dx
You've gotten into the bootloop, see my PERI tool (Link in sig) and try and run the bootloop-fix there, if you can get adb working. You can also try it manually (Again, adb permitting) in roach2010's recovery touch thread, he provides the fix there.
If you can't get adb working at all, you need to NvFlash back to stock, wheelie thread is again in my signature.
Good luck.
--
By the way, you can get back into Android by Cold-booting the system. Hold volume-down, then press power and keep holding volume-down till it boots. Don't press volume-up or anything else, that'll put you back into recovery.
I was tryin` but while i want to flash someting apx turning off and can`t do nothing :/ Erm, how to fix can`t use my tablet about 1 month
Hi,
have you tried coldbooting ?
Hold power and volume down. Should get you out of recovery.
Yes, i do mate, and can`t do nothing. It dont see sd card and tablet memory :/
Okay I have the same problem, i used the cursed Rom Manager and now im stuck in the endless boot cycle, I can cold boot and I have tried to flash roachs cwm but nothing. Ive read where roach gives a code that might fix it, but i have no ideal what to do with that code or how to use it, and i see where thing o doom said the fix is in his signature but im not having much luck with that either. If you could maybe explain to me how im supposed to use roaches code or post the link that explains it here, I would sure appreciate it. Thank you.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA Premium HD app
Any ideas please? :/
Start an adb shell session with your computer connected, or in a terminal app on your tf, then run roaches fix (type it in) to the terminal app/adb shell session.
"then run roaches fix" u mean write app/adb shell session ?
And now i got another problem:
"E: Can`t mount /sdcard/
Biggest problem for now, i can`t turn on debuging :/
okay I opened terminal emulator on my tablet and typed in roaches fix exactly like it says
adb shell dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p3
and this popped up
*daemon not running. starting it now on port 5038*
*daemon started successfully*

what am i doing wrong? thank you so much for your continued help
Ive also tryed the peri and easy recovery with no luck, I think my bigest problem is i dont understand the adb thing, ive tryed searching about it and im lost.
That's the wrong dd command, dd consists of an if=/ then an of=/
Try this.
adb kill-server
adb start-server
adb devices
(you should see the tf, if not, bad drivers/not working connection, fix that first)
adb shell
su (Grant superuser permissions, if you can, and you'll see a # sign)
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p3
reboot
Then flash a new recovery by:
Download and extract recoveryblob from recovery.zip
adb kill-server
adb start-server
adb devices
adb push C:\path\to\recoveryblob /sdcard/
adb shell
su (you'll get # sign again)
dd if=/sdcard/recoveryblob of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p4
reboot
I have to thank you for your patience and continued help with my problem, but with that being said I must inform you that I am still completely lost. Im not a developer and I would not even consider myself remotely knowledgeable in the subject. I was just wanting a nice custom ROM and I had found one with cyanogen mod 9 but I messed up by using the Rom manager and now I'm screwed.
I can cold boot into my tablet, and on my tablet I have this computer emulator program, which i can type in the codes you mentioned, but I'm pretty sure that is not correct. what i need is a program like that on my computer, so far I found this link regarding adb, but I'm not sure if it is right direction.....
http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/06/how-to-set-up-adb-usb-drivers-for-android-devices/
if this is the wrong direction, can you please point me in the right direction? again I am sorry for my ignorance and when this is all done I will be sure to buy you a freaking case of beer. Thank you
You can run the adb commands on your TF using the emulator app, but you'll need to directly download the recoveryblob used to flash.
Open terminal and run roach's fix (except instead of typing adb shell, you just start from su, then run the dd command from there, since you're already in the tf's 'shell')
so
su
dd if of etc
reboot
Then you'll need to reflash a recovery, so download Team Rouge's Recovery.zip then use ES file explorer app (download that) to extract the file called 'recoveryblob'. Take that file called 'recoveryblob' then copy it out of the downloads folder (still using ES file explorer) hit the favorites button then hit /sdcard/ (You don't need a microSD card to do this, /sdcard/ [For whatever reason ..] is the Internal storage. [/removable/microSD/ is the external]) then paste the recoveryblob right in /sdcard/.
Open up the terminal emulator and run
su
dd if=/sdcard/recoveryblob/ of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p4
reboot
That should give you recovery! (Then you can reflash a ROM or do whatever you need/Enjoy not having to cold-boot everytime)

Thanks for your info. TF now up and running without the need to cold boot. For information, I did not use a Rom Manager to flash the rom, I used CWM to flash the Gummy Rom.
I finally got my tf101 fixed and I learned something new. I just wanted to thank Thing of Doom for all of the help he offered me and without ever asking anything in return. Thanks.....
If anyone wants to know, here's what I did to fix nefem's completely FOUBAR TF101g.
First I tried NvFlash, then right at the flashing stage realized it's a tf101g Sbkv3, so that was out X.x
Then I uninstalled all the drivers and reinstalled them with PERI, got ADB working through recovery.
I had him try and flash a .zip file for a new recovery so I could run Roach's fix, but for whatever reason the CWM wouldn't mount the Internal storage (mmcblk0p7 or /sdcard/) so I manually pushed the recoveryblob to /sdcard/ and it seemed to work, but when I ran dd if=/sdcard/recoveryblob of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p4 it couldn't mount and find it.
The next thing I tried since internal was acting funky was looking at the log, I noticed that the directory was /system/sbin so I just pushed the recovery to there, adb push recoveryblob /system/sbin, then ran the same dd command with that directory and it worked. Then I just ran roach's fix normally and rebooted, he had rouge recovery!
That was the first part, his internal was still borked for some reason and Rouge couldn't mount it.
I tried various ADB mounts and they all failed, so eventually he put a MicroSD into his phone (or something else) I placed the ARHD superswipe script and a ROM w/ Guevor's kernel on there, then since rouge reads external, superwipe was able to completely format internal storage. From there it was an easy wipe and flash. Once we got a working ROM on there, we noticed that it was still getting stuck at the Eee pad logo (He could cold-boot). So I figured that his bootloader was still messed up, so we took the latest Tf101G stock blob, used the handy Rayman's blob tools to pull out the EBT (bootloader partition) blob, then directly flashed that with dd again through adb: dd if=/sdcard/blob (Removed the EBT extension, important) of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p4
Reboot, and finally it was booting optimally!
It was a tad of trial and error (The internal storage thing really had me confuzzled) but it all got fixed up in the end.
Hope this helps someone somewhere

I am having the same exact problem as him with the same amount of programming expertise....I was woundering if you could walk me through it personally as what you've typed above seems like it's in a different language. Thanks very much in advance.

Hi everyone, I'm trying to Install busybox,SuperUser and SU Binaries on my OUYA ...
I Have:

-echo 0x2836
-adb start-server
-adb devices
After 'adb devices' I see a number(My console #), which signifies my connected console...
Then i run the following commands to put SU in the proper place:
-adb shell
-su
-mount -o rw,remount -t ext4 /dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/APP
-exit

Are you stuck at the error saying---->"there was an error installing superuser" still? cause if you are i think i can help you..., just on your ouya head over to MANAGE-SYSTEM-ADVANCED and scroll down to apps and delete the BUSYBOX FREE and SUPERUSER APPS...after that's done just repeat the commands again and reboot the system, then go click on MAKE>SOFTWARE>SUPERUSER and allow it to UPDATE but not from recovery and if that doesn't work let me know and ill tell you what to do next...BUT if your stuck at "adb push su /sdcard/su cannot stat 'su': No Such Files Or Directory" error then i can also help you...let me know, it's very simple, less than a minute

Hi,
I'm at the point where I've installed 'superuser' apk via adb. I've rebooted the console, gone to MAKE>SOFTWARE>SUPERUSER but when I click on 'install', I just get the error message: "There was an error installing Superuser. Please send a log to the error to the developer" but there are no logs.
Any ideas?

yes, the best way to do it is with this tool OUYA toolbox and you can find it over here-----> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2350900 follow the instructions plug in your OUYA to your pc and download the test version of the tool, open it, click on install superuser and install it, then istall busybox and install it...then go to make- software-superuser and Update but not from recovery, then plug you OUYA back on to the pc and run the ouya toolbox program again and root(if you want to), you will be all set with SuperUser apk and busybox apk and root working perfect with no errors...

I think I might have found the issue. I think I forgot to copy the 'su' executable from /sdcard to /system/xbin. I've copied the correct 'su' executable to /system/xbin now. I'll have to test it later, I'm connected remotely at the moment so I can only do the shell stuff, I can't run Superuser.
What is the difference between the nativesu and the su copied from the attachment on this thread. There is a significant difference in size. Is the native su crippled in someway?

:good: i hope you found the issue...i was having the same issue as you "There was an error installing Superuser. Please send a log to the error to the developer" and no matter what i tried it wouldn't work, so i just downloaded the OUYA toolbox test version and it took me less then 1 minutes to have superuser apk and busybox apk running and rooted, i didn't know you were connected remotely, i had mines connected straight up with the usb cable and it makes it easier for me..."What is the difference between the nativesu and the su copied from the attachment on this thread. Yep. That was the problem. I guess I thought I'd copied the correct version of 'su' across without checking properly.

Sweet!!...glad you got it fixed... I knew that the native SU was crippled the first time i tried it...that's why i tried the OUYA toolbox cause i knew people had success with SU on that toolbox, so i gave it a try and SU was workin...tha's how i knew something was wrong with the native SU...
