Ok here I go ....I'm ready to stick my toe in the custom rom pool and I thought I had read everything I need to know. Reading the installation instructions and the first thing it says is to "wipe data/factory reset" that scared the @#$% outa me. Will I be able to go back to my stock rom and everything still be the way I left it?

Backup before you wipe data!
There is an option to create a backup in both sprecovery and clockwork.
You will be able to revert back using this backup if anything goes wrong.
Cool thanks that's what I thought just wanted to make sure....sorry I have one other question: Once I install the new ROM will I have to set it up and get all my apps and widgets all over again or will they be there
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
You gotta do that backup. Have to download ROM Manager and install Clockwork Mod Recovery. Don't you dare do anything until you do that. Good luck.

After wiping everything, it will all be gone. Apps and widgets won't go with you but if you get Titanium Backup, you can backup each app and widget and then restore it once you flash the new custom rom and it'll be just like it was before!
Ok I'm running Liberty feels good nice and smooth....got all my apps back but only 6 of about 100 contacts synced. Also I see they didn't bring along the 3G hot spot. I don't wanna give up yet...need a lil help

I just flashed my first ROM last night and lost my contacts too. Luckily I had them all saved on my wife's phone. I don't know about your droid but my captivate asks where I wold like to save a contact when I add a new one. I saved all of them to my gmail account just incase this happens again. There may be an easier way to do it. But this seems to work for me.
Any idea about the 3G Hot spot for Liberty

Yes, I'm a noob too, should we do it?
We lose the ability to get OTAs, right?
Do upgrades come to xda almost as fast as they come from Google?

Froyo is in the works, I believe a couple members are working on porting CyanogenMod6 to the incredible.
In the meantime DO NOT try to flash the Nexus One Froyo as it will most likely brick your phone. Look around the Incredible Threads for more info.
thanks...not gonna try until I'm fairly sure I won't brick it! getting root access was enough of a heart attack for a while I shall explore incredible forums.

on market, download rom manager, give it superuser.
in rom manager, install clockwork mod recovery.
on market, download SMS BACKUP & RESTORE
backup your txt messages
turn off your phone
volumedown+power... wait... recovery
now your in clockworkmod (might have to hit powerbutton once)
[use optical button to scroll up and down, and push for select. power button is now back button instead of select. go back to far, it will turn screen blank, in which case u just hit power again to go to main menu]
select nandroid
do a backup.
there now all your SH*t is backed up.. u can stop bein a little Biatch (jk) and start loading SkyRaider or CM6 Froyo.
the backup is in Esdcard)\clockworkmod\backup\20100721-xxxxx\
but nandroid will find it next time you run it and click restore.
you can also take a nandroid backup of your FroYo skyraider/froyo CM6 to save those and load up other Roms.
Got it?
Now that I am a pro, lol. I flashed cognition 4.3 and it's for sure way faster. Looks like stock rom, but is definitely way faster. Is there not much customization to be done on this rom? But imma start to read up on more roms. Thanks for teaching me how to flash!!
Edit: I know that froyo didn't require task killer, some people said that it even made their phone run bad. How about on cognition 4.3, does that need a task killer our does it run fine without one?

You can switch between 5 lockscreens
There are a couple of themes around for Cog 4.x if you're keen on customizing, just make double sure it's compatible with your ROM......and do a nandroid backup in case it goes pear shaped.
Forget task killers unless you have a really specific need.
I flash my first ROM couple weeks back. Was really happy it went with no glitches or problems, but all thanks to the help from here!

The lock screens should already be there. Take a look at Settings> Display> Unlock Screen.
For themes go to Captivate Themes and Apps and look for themes that say "Compatible with (or tested on) Cog 4.x".

cog 4.3 is a great rom to start, its not far off of stock. 4.3 seems to be running great for me too compared to earlier versions.
Well nice to see my help and recommendation of rom worked out for you. Now just read, read, read, and when you think you've got a question, read some more. I started flashing my phone day 2 of having it this is my first smartphone, didn't post until 3 months later and that was to start helping other people. Have fun and be careful font do anything unless you know what it is, and make sure you know how to recover from a blunder.
Ha, congrats, I too flashed Serendipity, my first, a week ago and since have flashed a nice juicy paragon kernel. It's amazing the speed! I've tried a few launchers but none did I like as much as the stock one. Until I found W7 launcher on the market. But I cross back and forth btw the stock and W7, thats what I like about it is it's easy to get rid of if I like. Great work on the flash, great people here, helped me out immensely too.
I do have one question tho, that hasn't been explained to me and may help you also. Harveythedog mentioned a nandroid back up and I've searched but cant find out what this means and how to do it? Can someone explain this?
I've backed up with titbu, and backed up my apn's, and my efs folder to ext sd, but I'm not positive I've done a nandroid backup.
What is REALLY needed is a sticky here with a step by step on what to do once you've flashed a rom. There's plenty on HOW to do it and what steps to take prior, but I haven't found anything on exactly what should be done after. I think it would be really useful for noobs like me.
great work
Stop encouraging him "haha" just kidding welcome to the party.
A nandroid back up is done in clockwork recovery under backup and restore, it makes a back up of your system so if you were to do something that breaks the os you can restore a working rom from the backup.
Good job on the flash no matter how many roms.i.try i keep going back to cog its the best one out there lovin the.battery life and speed

It puts it on the internal sdcard. /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup to be more precise. Flashing doesn't wipe the sdcard partition only master clear does that, but you should be backing up the entire sdcard on your computer before flashing anyway, so that will be in there, but a good rule of thumb in computers in general: if its important to you back it up, and back up the backup. Data redundancy is an amazing thing
make sure you dont rename it ever clockwork has an issue with restoring if you do, even if you change it back to what it was, so just dont rename. the nandroid itself is just named by the date you created it I believe.
serendipity forevaaaaa
3 days into my first Rom flash as well - Serendipity (literally spent weeks researching, reading and understanding everything).
Gotta say no matter how much i messed with lagfixes... Kernels... Modems..... I could never get the cappy as smooth as this Rom. Kudos to the creators. And grats on your first (and in all likelihood by no means your last)
I was playing with a ROM and decided that it wasn't for me so restored a back up I had made a couple of hours earlier and Android Market is now missing.
I have tried restoring it and a couple of previous back ups but still no Market.
Found a couple of APK's for the Market and while the phone claims to have installed them, I have the icon, the app won't launch.
Any ideas before I return to stock and start over ?

Curious as trying new ROM's isn't exactly a new thing for me or this device.
Best bet would be do a full wipe and then a clean install of either ginger or cm7

Hi all,
I'm an inspire noob running exist's 4.0.3 asopX version 26 and he recently said that he was going to update us to 4.0.4 for version 27. My question is can I back up what i have to the sd card, do a reset, then recover everything using 4.0.4? Or will i need to do a wipe and manually put stuff back on?
thanks
As Long as the recovery you are using is compatible with your backup, then you can restore it with any Rom you are running. Backups from CWM are not always compatible with 4EXT recovery and vice versa

I don't think glevitan understood your question correctly, or maybe I don't. I took it you want to back up your apps and such, not the ROM version itself. And to restore everything back on the 4.0.4 version. This has nothing to do with clockwork or 4EXT recovery.
If he releases the 4.0.4 ROM as an update and does not require a full wipe then just install it over top of the 4.0.3 ROM. Most of the time the DEV requires a full wipe though.
Usually it is best to do a full wipe and restore user data with a backup app like Titanium Backup. But you only want to backup and restore user apps. Restoring system data can really mess your ROM up severely. Google contacts will resync when signed in.

haha Now that I see your reply I guess that I didn't get what he was asking...well, he will come back and get what he wants or will ask again...
I will say, no matter how inconsequential it seems, DO. NOT. RESTORE. SYSTEM. DATA. between major android versions. Let me refine that. I back up my playlists using Titanium Backup. I figured this was an insignificant thing and restored it when I moved from CoreDroid to aospX. Firstly, it didn't restore my playlists; secondly, I had to factory reset the phone < 1 day later.
That said, I WILL be restoring playlists and contacts going from AR26 -> AR27. I'll report either here or in the dev thread if it causes problems, but I have 6 g(mail | apps) accounts plus my FB account, and it takes me a considerable amount of time to get the duplicates regrouped.
Hope I helped. BTW, the free version of TiBU is pretty good, you just have to confirm every install. To me, it was worth it to get the pay version so that I could restore all my apps without confirming every one (right now I have 45-50, that's a lot of confirmations). It's also nice to be able to back out of a buggy new version of an app, or to be able to go back if you don't like the new version (I'm looking at you, FB.)
oh i see now. looks like i really lucked out cuz i flashed AR27 and his 4.0.4 then did a recovery. I thought it was a bit odd that it still said 4.0.3 so I came back here. Doh! okie dokie. I'm redoing a wipe and clean install and I'll just push all of my apps back from my google account.
Thanks for all the pointers about Tia Backup

I really appreciate all the help guys but I've flashed both the InspireMod 0.5 and the one you both provided the link for. Unfortunately it still doesn't record sound. Its just kinda odd the stock recorder doesn't work

You should have placed this in the ICS Q/A thread. Do NOT use the development thread for questions. thats why the restriction is in place, so people learn the ropes a bit before they are allowed in there. I would redownload and do a full wipe and reflash. And try to record your mms BEFORE you put all your apps and stuff back on there. Need a clean environment before you can dig deeper into this. Only thing you should put on after installing is inspiremod before doing your mms test. Id love to help test with ya, but i always remove the default mms apk from my phone :/
OK. Now I know. Which messaging app do you use?

Hey all,
If you've been around a while (like me) chances are you've become pretty accustomed to the process every time a new build is released: download build & newest GApps, backup old apps and settings, wipe everything, flash both and restore...right? Cool.
Well I've been trying to update beanstalk as per usual but the backup app I've been using (prior to this point, without error) decided it no longer likes me. It's called My BackUp Root and it's always served my purposes magnificently. Before MBuR, I used Titanium Backup and when MBuR failed a few days ago I tried TiBu again. At this point, neither works for me. The phone either reboots or the process hangs, never finishing successfully.
SO
Any backup app recommendations that aren't MyBackUp Root or Titanium? I am of course rooted. I want to back up APKs, Data, and whatever settings I can. Thanks!
