Upgrade from Eclair to Serendipity(Froyo) Battery Doesn't Last - Captivate General

I've viewed many posts on battery life on xda but I still don't know why my battery doesn't last even when I am not using it.
I disabled wifi/gps location, disabled facebook/twitter widgets and any other logical power usage. After that I powered it up to 100% and after two hours with no usage the battery dropped 15%. I installed an app which will let me know in a day or so which apps are sucking the life out of my battery.
Do you have any ideas?
Thanks

Recalibrate the battery.. lots of info on xda. Mine went two days the last charge...

You might have flashed it when your battery wasn't full?
try recalibrating the battery?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765656&highlight=calibrate

That doesn't always help. I had the same issue with Serendipity. It is a good ROM but for me it just killed my battery. It was mostly draining during sleep periods which it should not. I have had issues with OC/UV kernels and I just decided to switch ROM's rather than try another kernel. Nothing wrong with the ROM for me other than battery drain, which is an issue between phones from what I have seen.

try firefly + speedmod kernal
give it a few days to settle in after 2-3 days use my battery life had improved tremendously

Since flashing to Serendipity my battery life has just about doubled from ~6 hours to more than 12 hours of heavy use.
I use WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth continuously with very little3G data or voice communications.
I never use the media player or the camera.

Try the Di11igaf's 5.1 rom. The battery is amazing for me. Just flash the rom at 100% and then recalibrate and set clock at 100mhz and uv at 50 75 75 100 125 125 (1280 to 100mhz)

Serendipity isnt the problem ...

Agreed. I believe it's user error.

The culprit was wifi, as it would randomly connect to a network and some apps started to sync. I"ll try to recalibrate the battery and disable wifi for a day and see how my battery lasts.
Thanks for all the help

CM7 battery life Troubleshooting thread

I am loving this rom, but also having HORRID battery life, I am literally dropping 10% every 90 minutes with an extended battery.
27% Cell Standbye
26% Bluetooth
19% Display
Now I keep reading that these might be false readings, but I keep reading this as a response to those having **** for battery life... so maybe they are not false?
Anyone having good battery life show readings like this? Those with bad battery life, what are your readings?
I'm running the CM7 w/the 2.5 radio - I'm in a 100% full time 4G area, but seem to have worse battery life when the 4G radio is on, so I just keep the phone on 3G - if I need the faster data I can always turn it on and off.
I'm running the stock kernal, no overclocking or setcpu type stuff going on.
Would like to hear from folks running this ROM w/killer battery life, what are your settings, tweaks, etc. Please specify if you're running an MR1 or Mr2/2.5 version and/or running the latest OTA 2 radio that just came out like yesterday.
I just turned off my FB sync (I forgot about that). I don't have gmail set up to sync automatically either.
I'm going to do this procedure a little later today and see if it helps, this is for the EVO, but, ya know....
34. "Calibrate" battery - (1) Turn device ON, charge it for 8 hours (or until LED turns green), (2) unplug and turn it OFF, plug it back in and charge for 1 hour (or until LED turns green), (3) unplug and turn it ON, wait 2 minutes, turn it OFF, plug it back in, and charge for 1 hour (or until LED turns green), (4) unplug it, turn it ON, and use normally.
Anybody else try this?
today will be my first full day of work use w/this ROM so we'll see what happens.
Best to keep 4g off if not using it. Also, turn Bluetooth off when not in use.

i had horrible battery life the first day - then it got better. then i flashed mr2 official and battery life is really solid. getting like 15-20 hrs with 4g always on, bluetooth on sometimes. one important thing is having a custom lighting table which i will post later.

I have never, nor do I intend to ever do this. I got an extended battery for a reason. I can go all day and then some on the official roms, and all of the Sense roms.
I am not new to CM7, I have run it on both an Eris, and an Incredible. Both devices got FAR better battery life on CM7.
I am not complaining about this rom, or Slayhers hard work. I simply want to gather information so that we may help him trouble shoot.

This is exactly what I did lol, I had lost 10% in the first 90 minutes, now I am at 58% at 5 hours. I have been streaming google music for 2 hours of that 5 though. I would guess I should have seen an increase in battery usage, but have not.
The battery readings are wrong, I get a full day on 4G with my stock battery and see those numbers for cell standby etc. I use lean kernel though
Sent from my ThunderBolt using XDA Premium App
do you see those numbers for BLUE TOOTH though? We know good and well some numbers are fake, but that does not mean all.
FYI I am now at 37% and 7 hours and 7 minutes... I have not used google music since the last post and I am seeing the exact same battery drain as when I was using it.
I have absolutely horrible battery life when I'm at work (which is basically a bunker). On a normal day, my battery will be dead within 6 hours just sitting there on my desk.
However, when I am at home (great 4G signal), I see my device getting upwards of 16 hours with moderate use.
I will also say that since I upgraded to the most recent radio, I have been having much better battery life at home. Additionally, my phone has stayed much cooler with the most recent RC + new radio combination.
I heard if you change the render fx to n1 calibrated, then you will get like 1 hour extra of battery life. You can change the render fx by going to cyanogenmod settings.
11h32m11s on extended battery 69% left
The other numbers have to be wrong. Theres no way cell standby is the number one battery user.
my cell standby is also showing 30% with the new OTA 2 radio.
I switched to dream kernel (have not wiped battery stats) and am now at 88% after two hours, that puts me at 6% per hour verses yesterdays 10.

only works for AMOLED screens.
edit: to be clear, it only saves battery on AMOLED.
so what i have found is that after installing dream kernel and messing with the governor settings... along with being connected to wifi. my battery life has improved tremendously. i wiped battery stats this morning after a full charge and didnt notice any change.. then i flashed the kernel and messed with gov. settings... after rebooting ive noticed a huge huge difference.. just my 2 cents for anyone who had battery issues like me
Yesterday I was able to choke out 20 hours while in a 4G area the entire time.
Running RC 1.2, Imoseyon's leanKernel extreme mode (extremely undervolted and OCd to 1.4GHz) and using the InteractiveX governor.
Also, I just happened to reboot and surprisingly it only took away 1% of my battery. Amazing considering whenever I did that on a Sense ROM, I'd experience a battery loss ranging from 7%-10%.

What settings did you land on as best?
cpu is set max to 368 mhz(very low) but i can crank it up if im doing somethign like playing games or downloading and want speed. brightness is at about 15-20 percent. the dream kernel and mr2.0 radio have made a big diff too. the dream kernel made the biggest. usually when id power off or reboot id lose 6-10 percent same as someone else i saw post. now i lose maybe 1 percent which is a huuuuge difference considering you lose 10 percent just because you reboot. also i try to stay on wifi wherever i go. on 3g i def notice it drain quicker, but i am no expert and there are a lot of people on here who by far outexperience and outknowledge me(my new 2 words) so im sure other people have some suggestions

terrible battery life

ok so here's the deal.. my phone has been off the charger for about 4 hours and im already down to 40% left. I live in a 4g area but it is spotty in many areas, including my workplace. I have gps (for weather updates and nav, when i need it) and wifi on at all times. i am running the EP4P modems on GummyCharged Froyo ROM 2.0. I have the screen brightness turned all the way down. No overclocking.
Kernel: 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #30
I have tried several different methods to calibrate the battery but it doesnt seem to help. When i'm at home and using wifi the battery life is pretty good. so is it my modem? the ROM? my kernel? Can anyone help me get the most out of my phone? I've tried various modems but have stuck with GC since I loaded it back in sept.
If you are in a spotty area, that can happen. Searching for signal and 4G/3G switching can drain the battery very fast. I would try putting the phone in cdma mode while you are at work or any other spotty area.
Turn off wifi and gps if you are not currently using them, wifi scans for networks regularly and you may have apps/widgets that are using the gps/ network location services while you are idle
also, my battery stats say that display is using up 45% (as of now) of my battery life with 23 mins of usage time. I have the wifi turned on for my convenience, but it doesn't scan for networks as i've turned that function off. I will try the cdma switch, but I have also tried that before and I don't think it makes too much of a difference.

The battery usage metrics aren't useful until you've been up for several hours. And having the screen using a high percentage is ideal -- it means that the rest of the system is throttling like it is supposed to.
How long have you been on GummyCharged? A few weeks into having that on my phone happily, battery life took a nose dive similar to what you are experiencing. I flashed back to stock and battery life is much better. Waiting for official GB before trying another ROM.

i see your point but im now at 5 hours uptime with 23% battery left.. light/medium usage. display still says 46% battery use with 25 mins of usage time. that seems like incredibly too much battery drainage.
also, when i put the phone into cdma mode do i select the home or automatic option, and what is the difference?

i flashed GC onto my phone in mid september. since then i've tried calibrating the battery several times. a totally futile exercise it seems. What setup are you running now? 2.2.1 with EE4 modem? Rooted?
The only thing that has solved my battery problems is juice defender. Sitting idle for eight plus hours at night I only drop about 3-5%. Of choose it still drains just as quickly while using the phone but it will help if you're in a spotty area because data is turned off if your screen is off.

I've never had good luck using a modem from one rom with a DIFFERENT rom/kernel. Always docreased my performance.
I find it odd that Battery is the only issue you are having.

I have similar issues. After rooting and flashing Humble on my phone, my battery life sucked, much much worse than stock.
I then put the standard 2.3.6 on it and it still sucks. Full 4G all day, barely use it.
It's sat on my desk at work all day today. Sent a few texts. I've installed betterybatterystats and nothing is taking up a large portion of partial wakelocks.
Really don't understand how people are getting such good numbers...
I find that by far and away the best way to increase battery life is to lock my phone in 3G unless I am downloading something & want the 4G speed.
I have a home screen widget that turns 4G on/off & only turn on 4G occasionally. I do not leave WiFi on although I leave GPS on at all times & find that uses almost no battery life whatever.

I thought my battery was bad then i looked at that graph. I don't even get it... The screen is mostly off and the signal is green most of the time.
It may be some rogue app on your phone. Backup your apps and do a factory reset. If your battery life significantly improves, restore your apps one by one and find the culprit.

Just stock EE4, unrooted, will do OTA as soon as I get the notification. Battery life is not that good, I can get 14 or so hours of use leaving it on 3G most of the time, but on Gummy I would get 50+% drain just having it sit overnight. Now leaving it sit overnight doesn't kill it.

you prob shouldnt be using that ROM..its kinda outdated...just flash the new ALL IN ONE ODIN of EP4D...my battery life is pretty sick...i left it unplugged all night and saw a tiny drop..my phone was connected via wifi tho..if my phone is in 4g the battery loses pretty quickly or if my screen is on ultra bright..
I'm running the stock, rooted, manually-debloated EP4P and I've been getting downright stellar battery life.
My kids watched an hour of Netflix this morning while getting ready, and now (almost 10 hours later), I'm still at 63%.
But! (and here's the kicker) - I leave WiFi on all the time (I'm contemplating buying Woofi to save even more battery when I'm not at home or work) and have my WiFi sleep policy set to "Never".
This is (one of) the key(s). It doesn't matter how strong your 3G or 4G signal is, WiFi will always save you battery. 3G is less battery intensive per-time, but much more battery intensive per-byte. 4G is less battery intensive per-byte, but much more battery intensive per-time. WiFi is much more battery intensive per-time, but wildly less battery intensive per-byte.
In other words, for the same download, you'll use the least battery on WiFi (even with a slower than LTE connection), 4g in the middle, and 3G the most.

[Q] Terrible battery life

Alright so my skyrocket is rooted with the faux kernel and sky ics 7.4 speed rom. My battery lasts me roughly until 6pm everyday when taken off the charger at 6am for school (obviously aren't using it during school) so that to me, is crap battery life for such a large battery capacity especially only using HSPA+ no LTE. cpu set at 1.5ghz uv -75mv, ondemand governer, screen off to 384mhz. Noticed Android System uses nearly as much battery as display, at minimum brightness.
Can anyone help me reduce this or give me any tips for better battery life?
in the pics below, i left my phone idle overnight after a 100% charge before going to bed at around 12am. woke up with the phone at 98%.
under moderate useage it will die 10%/45 minutes.

I bought a external charging kit + spare battery package that samsung sells for around $40. An external charger (equivalent to charging your phone on AC while the power is turned off) is the best charging you can give your battery. The worst type of charging is charging your battery while the phone is on connected to a computer through USB.
Of course, who wants to charge with the phone turned off? That's why you should get this package. I never worry about charging my phone. When I'm running low, I just do a quick battery swap. A seriously annoying issue with this phone becomes a non-issue.
I also make sure I try to do a deep cycle charge. I always let it drain to around 5-15% before I swap batteries.

I think I read somewhere that faux's kernels don't support Wifi tethering. Is this still true? Do other custom kernels have this problem?
I flashed the Paradox rom on the T989 forums with Faux's Skyrocket kernel and I didn't download System Tuner with this ROM (Just kept it the way it was) and it has zero lag and from 6 am to 2am the next night, I only went down to 32% so battery life is the most amazing I've had ever
I had a similar problem on my old captivate. I found a rogue app that was using a ton of battery. Like 74% of my battery. Bat stats said it was Android OS using it. Delete some of the recent apps you may have installed b4 you noticed the bad battery life. I am on SkyICS 7.4 my battery life is pretty good. The rogue app that I found was a game Pirates from Disney.

12 hours isn't too bad for a Skyrocket.
On my phone, I'm rooted, running SkyIce ROM with Faux Kernel. My usage is as follows:
Display-64%
Android System-6%
Android OS-5%
Cell Standby-2%
I average around 10 hours of heavy (constant) use, and about 16 hours with normal use. I'm quite satisfied with the Skyrockets battery life. I've only had the phone for 10 days, so the battery is still settling in. It's much better than the battery life on the SGS II, which got around 8-11 hours.

Anyone having crappy battery life with ICS?

Just curious is it just me or does the Skyrocket have ****tier battery life running on ICS compared to it running on Gingerbread? Anyone else having battery problems. I've been running ICS on my I727r for 2 days now and the battery life is very questionable. Probably a battery stat reset will work :S

Yeah, my battery went out pretty damn quick yesterday, but that could be because I've been fussing with my phone more than normal.
The first day of using ics my battery life was okay. The second day my battery life sucked. Why? Because I set up Facebook. Battery manager showed 10% use and I hadn't even checked it. Its the bloat!

Just curious is it just me or does the Skyrocket have ****tier battery life running on ICS compared to it running on Gingerbread? Anyone else having battery problems. I've been running ICS on my I727r for 2 days now and the battery life is very questionable. Probably a battery stat reset will work :S

Same, my i727r battery life is horrible since i flashed ICS.
I have noticed that my android system is pulling a lot of juice compared to GB. I made some changes today like freeze all the bloat + installed UCLC4 modem. And wiped battery stats + complete drain and discharge of the battery. Lets see if it get better after a few cycles.
My battery seems a lot better! Way way way better. 25 minutes of web and its still full!

Battery has been much better for me with ICS.
Freezing tons of bloat helps..
My battery life has been horrible on ICS but when I look at the battery thing, Face Unlock used 35% of my batter (when my batter was 5% left) o-o it takes THAT much?
My battery life is absolutely amazing with ICS.
I have the stock rom debloated completely, and a lot of junk is disabled. Coupled with turning off auto brightness and leaving data off when i don't use it, the battery just chugs along.
This morning I got in my car at 7 AM, started playing music full blast through the stereo for an hour. Got to class, played some temple run, approximately a half hour worth. 30 texts or so, one 1 minute phone call. (data was off the entire time, it keeps facebook from butting in from behind) My battery has literally only gone down 10%, and it's 1 PM
I'm in love.
Seems fine here, I usually have it plugged in but today am testing it without. The couple charge blips are from when I had to get some files off of it.
I froze a bunch of the AT&T bloatware, have had Wi-fi, BT, GPS enabled the entire time. Moderate/light use... I've attached some screens.
I'm running http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1567817 with the flashable ICS modem.
My battery has been horrible but it's only been a day for me and my signal has been fluctuating a lot on day one. It's stabilized now so we'll see after a few days of use. But right now it is horrible.
It seems mine is doing worse.
But I have been adding a lot of stuff since this is my first time rooting.
I am about to get a battery depleted(at 12% right now) and reset the battery statistics and install the OEM battery.

I thought there was a lot of debating over deleting the battery stats, i remember an article from a google programmer saying that it actually decreases battery performance...i personally stopped doing it a year ago and noticed a better batter experience, most of the time bad battery comes from a bad flash or apps that run in the backround and use location services
My battery life was horrible with ICS so im back to GB. At work with phone in pocket for 2hrs and was already down to 75% off killing battery and charging it fully next day. When I got home after 8hrs of work already at 50% and thats when its in sleep mode. Using it I would drain 1% every couple minutes definitly bloat. Might try new debloated ones but kinda skeptical since GB gives me amazing battery life.
Once the kernel source drops custom kernels will make all you guys stop crying your all used to optimized stuff not samsucks stuff lol give it time

Well condiering I have never reset them and did this first and only flash of the ICS leak, I'm hoping it helps out. We'll see what happens.
I have Juicedefender turning everything off while sleeping(set widgetlocker to deinied so when locked, widget locker stays active to be ready, and juicedefender see's that and turns off data)
On my 2100mAh nexus battery I barely got over a day(was getting 36-40 hours on GB)
Either way, I have two batteries so I'll deal with it until either an official ICS release or a new rom with better battery performance comes around.
I also have the nexus battery. Def have less battery life with this version of ics .
It could be the algorithm the use. At the start of the day is slowly draws down. As the day goes on it seems to drain faster

Actually, I have been having the Best battery life to date. I will post my list of APK's that I removed. I don't do FB or anything like that, so not sure if that is affecting it. Also, in a non LTE area. on the UCLA3 kernel, I was absolutely getting horrid battery life.
I live in an LTE area and I am getting almost a full day of use. Never got that with GB. I keep wanting to charge it, but I dont have to.
I do have Juice Defender running though, and it disables my data in 15 or 30 min intervals when the screen is locked. And I have SetCPU which limits the CPU to a max of 384 when the screen is locked.

Updated to ICS, lost hours of battery life?

I have updated to the official ICS (AT&T) and now I'm no longer getting much battery life. I had some issues with the update, so I wiped my phone and I have little to no apps.
I used to get 10+ hours of battery life, and now I don't even get 8 idle hours (so now it doesn't even last the work day). I checked Battery Usage after it was down to 20% and cell standby took up 90% of battery life.
I used to run JuiceDefender, but I reinstalled it on ICS.
Why have I lost so much battery life; how can I fix this?

I have noticed the same thing on the stock ICS. Also noticed very slow charge times using USB (possibly true with A/C charging but I am normally asleep when I charge with A/C).
Is this just caused by the bloat that they put in? I want to flash a custom ROM just for battery life at this point.

Im also seeing Cell Standby as a higher % than I used to.
install sky ics rom , this is the best battery . you can easy use more than 15hours . nexus mod 5.04 is also good . and much easier for noob to install . stock sucks .
Try Instigators Kernel. Does wonders for your SR battery....

Instigator's kernel is for AOSP (CM9/AOKP) so for ICS based official or roms you will need a different one such as mohan's kernel:

As for battery loss, there are some cases where if the flash wasnt done with 100% battery it could be reading the battery wrong and some people have had success with recalibrating their battery (look up battery calibration on play store). Now it was said that it really doesnt do anything for battery improvements and was just for stats use or whatever but for some people it helped their devices read the right battery stats.
