[Q] any way to force HSPA?? - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

I'm f***ing tired with my connection keeps dropping back to 3g instead of H when the signal strength is strong enough and the speed as you know becomes miserably slow, very much slower! I know how to force 3g over 2g but not H. So, is there any ways to force HSDPA over 3g? Any help is appreciated

I think HSPA is based on coverage, you can't really forced it. I have no idea how HSPA worked in your country (mine is full HSPA coverage except underground though) but if you are losing HSPA easily probably means your area is lacking proper HSPA coverage. Try calling your operator and asked if there is full proper HSPA coverage in your area.

Oops. Should have explained more clearly. The area is well covered. The signal outside the house is 4/4 bars with H all the time. Inside the house is 3 bars also with H but sometimes drops to 3g. And in my room, the signal drops to 1 or 0 bars but sometimes the network is on H but most of the times is on 3g. So I need to use H all the time. How?

Well, seems like nobody cares enough about this issue(or good enough to know how to solve). but never mind. Got it all figured out. now at least I can use 3g in my room with 3 bars and not edge

What was the solution you figured out? I have the same issue...

You can change your 3g and h limits by editing your prop build using root explorer, have done it on my x10i to increase up and download speed, but dont know the settings for other phones. Try searching 3g+ on xda for relevant thread.

Well I see some settings relating to the Category for HSUPA/HSDPA but not a way to actually control whether 3g or HSPA is selected..

My Fuze ended up on the HSDPA network...

...and nobody at AT&T can tell me why. In fact, when I showed them the phone with the H and 3 bars at the Device Service Center, they claimed they'd never seen such a thing.
The backstory is this: I've had good service at my home for a dozen years. I've always gotten solid E reception. About a month ago, 3G reception started to creep into the picture, although at a very low signal strength. It bounced between E and 3G every few moments and I started getting lots of dropped calls, no dialing, missed calls, etc. where that never happened before. I did some research here at xda and decided to drop Airplane Mode from my settings and add a 3G on-off switch using Advanced Config. After some futzing around, that worked pretty good but now whenever I try to switch to 3G, I get HSDPA. Go figure? Not that I'm complaining, because it's pretty darn fast.
But what the heck...only one Device Service Center in a city this size (San Antonio) and they've never seen a phone showing HSDPA? None of this really means anything, I'm just looking for explanations/comments.

Then why do my bars read H, not 3G? Actually, based on some online research, HSDPA appears to be a superset of 3G...a.k.a. 3.5G. At any rate, the "tech wizards" at the DSC had never heard of it.
I've got a Touch Pro running on T-Mobile network. Their 3G seems to be a different
frequency than the TP can receive. If I turned on HSDPA and then wander into an AT&T 3G zone and my TP picks up their 3G network, will it overpower my T-Mobile Edge and put me into roaming?
The H is the same as 3G like the other guy had said. Plus if you went into Advance Config. to change the setting then that will replace the 3g with the H. Which is not a big deal. All the phones in Europe use the H symbol in the US we get that damn 3G. Personally I like the H ova the 3G. H=High speed
So really and truly you have nothing to worry about. Should be happy you have the H showing up than the 3G to me H is a lil faster on some phones!!!!!!
att hides their hspa icon under the 3g icon. so you never know the difference between hspa 3.5g or umts 3g. if you flashed a new rom, updated your phone canvas, changed some icons, enabled it, or who knows, chances are you are back to the standard way the rest of the world has it, with the h icon.

does the g2x even have a 3g indicator icon?

ive noticed that i get a 4g and a 2g icon but wheres the 3g icon? has anyone seened it?
Travling through the middle of nowhere over the last 3 days I've seen, no signal, G, 2G, 3G, & 4G. It's there.
I also have not seen the 3G icon. I drive through the city and would think when I get out if 4G I would at least still be in a 3G area. Wonder if something may be wrong....

Same here but this is the first 4G device I have had and I know for a fact most of my city is covered by 4G. What is also weird is that in areas where I would have 1 or 2 bars with my Vibrant, it is telling me I have full bars worth of 4G with the G2X.
its there in the framwork i checked..
Im just wondering why it doesnt display 3G when its on UMTS... it sticks to 4G all the time...
very strange in the instruction manual it also shows 3g icon!

A lot of this has to do with the fact that T-Mobile's 3G towers == their 4G towers so if you're in an area where all of their towers have been upgraded to HSPA+ you will NEVER show 3G because you're always on a 4G tower. The only time you will show a 3G signal is if you're in an older area where they have pre-HSPA+ upgradeable towers. This is how T-mobile can say they have the biggest 4G network because almost all of their old HSPA/3G equipment has been turned into 4G equipment via software upgrades.
I have had my g2x for about 5 days and all I ever see is 4G or E never 3g. I have been checking in the settings/about phone/status and even when the phone is showing 3-4 bars of 4G it is still on umts. In the exact same location and within a minute or so when checking it with my Vibrant I will have 3 bars of H or 3G and in status it shows as hspda or hspda+. What is that about? I have checked this out at least 6 to 7 times a day and it is always the same only umts on the G2X and Hspda or Hspda+ on the Vibrant. I called CS and they wanted to send out another G2X I reluctantly said yes. I do really like this phone and will try to be patient but the device I have now has multiple issues. I am going to take the stance that this is an isolated case and the new one will be golden!!!

This is true. There's pretty much no need for a '3G' icon. Though, technically, it's debatable whether or not T-Mo's (or any other carriers) offerings right now are actually '4G' (according to the standards committees that define those things), but that's a different argument
tl;dr: T-Mo's 3G and 4G operate on pretty much the same technology, so if you're in an area where there was 3G, you'll probably have 4G. It doesn't need to switch back and forth or be toggled like the other solutions (looking at you Wi-Max)

[Q] Data speeds?

So I know all the issues with older 2g sims affecting speeds, I called tmobile, and they said that I was in fact registered with a 2g sim, so I had them activate the sim that came in the box, but I have no improvement in speed. I'm still getting nowhere above 2mbps, most of the time around 1. I know I have a 4g data plan, they added that when I got the phone for immediate activation, not next billing cycle. Even in areas where my old mytouch 3G slide got 4 mbps on the 3G HSPA network, I can't get much above 2 on the HSPA+ network. What gives? If the new 4g sim and data plan aren't working, what's the issue here? Anyone else having issues?
Are you sure that you're connected to HSPA+? And, even if you are connected with good reception to a HSPA+ tower, that doesn't mean that the tower has good bandwidth backhaul. If its a low traffic tower, T-Mobile might not want to pay for a large amount of bandwidth for it.

I suppose I can't be positive, but the icon says 4G. Although I've never seen a 3G icon, only G, 2G, and 4G, meaning they probably just replaced the 3G icon with the 4G icon since the phone can't technically display a different icon for HSPA and HSPA+, can it? I've never seen a 3G icon so I might just be connected to 3G. But even in populous areas, like downtown, at night, I top out at 4, MAYBE 5 mbps. I've heard people getting 4 or 5 on a bad day, 7-8 average and 10-12 if they're lucky. I'm wondering where that's at, maybe it's a flaw in the stock rom and an AOSP or other custom rom would be better. I seem to remember having bad speeds on sense on my Slide too.
During data transfer, I went to the about phone>network menu, and mobile network type reads HSDPA and then reverts to UMTS after a period of inactivity. It does not specify HSDPA+ though, it just says HSDPA. I understand that the 3g and 4g networks on tmobile are technically one and the same, HSDPA+ is just an advancement of the 3G technology, but I'm wondering if something just isn't clicking and the phone isn't taking advantage of HSDPA+. I checked the coverage map, and the entire region I live in, minus a few rural areas, are supposed to be covered by 4G data.

4G On My Skyrocket Finally Working BUT........

Ok...i added the Blaze Radio Mod to my Stock 4.0.4 Firmware on my Skyrocket. All went good. I see a 4G now. BUT...theres no bars in the signal. Why is this? And when i do the speed test now...keep saying try again. Ok...just now as im typing this...i changed the WCDMA to 1700....an now the speedtest gave me 3.00 Mbps download and 0.49 upload. But only 1 bar in my signal. Any way at all to improve that? I know my bar was more then that when i had edge or my other 3G phone. Let me know something if your reading this....and thanks.
THANKS TO ALL YOU GUYS ON HERE THAT REPLIED TO MY COMMENTS TO HELP. ILL TRY TO GIVE THANKS TO ALL OF YOU. THANKS AGAIN.
so on at&t uclf6 you were not getting 4G LTE? i have had no problems... i would not recommend using the blaze radio as it just never worked as well for me. have you tried some of the other ics radios? there are a bunch floating around. good luck
No i havent. People seem to be saying Blaze's Mod one is the only or at least best one. I mean...the 4G is there.....but no signal bars. Why would that be tho?
Oh..its unlocked using T Mobile now. If that helps.
I suspect the signal meter with with blaze mod is not that accurate. I routinely get in the a high percentage under cell standby time without signal, even in areas I know I have service. These are areas I spend multiple hours at a time at making and receiving calls.
Man..i dont know. Something is funny with this. When i turn my WiFi off....the 4G comes on...no signal bars...Market take a while to load. Few apps even timed out. And i KNOW im in a good coverage area. Is the Blaze Mod radio actually the best one? Is there others to use for us thats unlocked using T Mobile?
By saying 4G do you mean LTE or HSPA+?
It just shows 4G at the top. Is there another symbol? In my settings...about phone....it says Mobile Network Type:UMTS:3. I did see HSPA earlier for a bit. Guess i still have some fiddling to do. Wonder if there is another Radio that may give me more Bars. Mine shows 1 or none. But has the 4G symbol.
on skyrocket 4G isn't actually 4G it shows it when your connected to HSPA and I think also GSM not sure about the latter.
When your connected to LTE it will show 4G LTE.
Also by choosing WCDMA your actually choosing HSPA or at least that's how it looks to me.
Try different radios before working by stuff you read people say, each phone has different hardware, everyone leaves in different areas and thus each modem works differently for different people.
Also download network signal app from the market and check your dbm which means your reception, you can't count on bars because it's programmed differently for each modem -65 dmb and lower(or higher if your a match freak) is excellent -65 to -75 is good and the close it is to -100 is the worse reception you have.

Hmmm. True. Man..im tired of swapping all these Radios. Wanna find one that works decent at least. Some people say they get 1 to no bars in the house like i do. Then go outside an get 3 Bars. Im gonna download that Signal app. Sounds very interesting. I have it on LTE in the *#2263* now. Let me try the signal thing. Thanks man.
[Edit] Love the Network Signal Info Pro. Even tho its showing a frown for my mobile. But WiFi really good. I saw some Network Signal Boosters. I mean...do those really work if anyone know? Tried 2...didnt really see anything.

[Q] HSPA Fallback

Hi everyone,
I was looking around and I read that the Nexus is suppose to fallback to HSPA when the LTE signal is weak or non-existent.
I was curious as to when the phone actually considers the LTE signal weak. In my room, I only get 1 bar on LTE (~115 dBm), sometimes losing the signal completely, however I have never actually seen it fallback to HSPA.
So my question is, when does the phone automatically switch from LTE to HSPA?
Thanks in advance!
Current setting on my phone:
LTE (Recommended) is selected as the "Preferred network type"
[LTE/GSM auto (PRL) in the hidden menu]
Yes it will automatically switch when you not in a LTE area.. Its not based on signal strength.. Its based on your area and the area without Lte must have hspa to work or it will switch to 3g or Edge if hspa is unavailable...

As in previous reply, it only falls back if there is no signal. Sometimes signals are weak and connection drop. Your phone tries to connect back to LTE. Since LTE signals are still in the air, it wouldn't switch to HSPA. If you think you will benefit from HSPA compared to LTE, you can manually change it.

Hey, thanks for the quick reply.
I guess now my question is, how long will the phone wait before it gives up on looking for a LTE signal and switch to HSPA?
I initially thought that the phone would fall back to HSPA if the LTE signal is too weak.
Thanks in advance!
