Streaming media from Windows Media Center 7 - G Tablet General

I didn't see it posted anywhere here, but if you install the Twonky DLNA client, you can stream every piece of media that is on a Windows 7 Media Center PC. I just installed it, and watched several movies, listened to music, and could see all my photos. Didn't do anything at all to the Win 7 box. It just worked...

Cool thanks for sharing. So many projects I could be doing... where do I start? Ha!

Where did you get the client? I can only see twonky.

It called "Twonky Mobile". It's in the Market.

Ok, then I have downloaded the right one. Are you running anything on win7 media center at all? My tablet can't find my window 7 share.

Twonky didn't look for Windows Shares -- it connected via DLNA. I don't have my content shared via SMB shares on my HTPC. Twonky saw the HTPC, connected to it, and lets me browse via DLNA...
I'm running vegan on my gtab. Don't know if that matters or not...

Twonky
Dudeinmyrtlebeach...do you have an xbox or other device setup to stream to? The mediacenter PC might not run the server if no extenders are setup.

Make sure u have wmp with the option to stream over the network. Only then u will see your pc in twonky

Thanks. I will try that.

XBOX... I'll bet that's what it is.. I have 2 of 'em set up as extenders. I also have a couple of other tablets (Motion LE's) running Windows 7 that connect to the media center pc.
Maybe that's what it is...

... and I just tried Twonky on my Droid X, and it didn't see my HTPC... I have no idea what gives. Rebooting the X...

Have u checked the allow streaming option on windows media player? I had to let it finish the library scanning before i could see my htpc on gtablet

It works fine on my gtab. Doesn't work at all on the X... No idea...

If you don't like Twonky, there are other options as well.
Upnplay is really good and free as well.
2player is a dlna/upnp client but more focused on music. I like that it can play Windows Media Playlists.
Eyecontrol and Andromote are dlna players that also allow you to control where your media is playing to - so for example you can use it to tell your PC to play something on your TV, or your phone to play something to your radio - etc. etc. etc.
Great DLNA or Streaming software examples are TVersity, which you can put on your PC - share everything you want to share to and it will automatically convert the file if necessary to whatever you're using to stream from it.
PlayOn is like Tversity but the free part allows you to stream only from your local media collection. If you pay for a license, it allows you to watch Hulu/Netflix etc. on your DLNA client. I don't know if this works.
Orb is like a mashup of Tversity and Upnplay in that it streams almost anything to your device - the main difference is that you can achieve the functionality of doing it through the internet at default, whereas the other products are geared primarily as in-network solutions.
Twonky is finicky at best. I have it on my Mytouch 4G and sometimes it works great while at others it stops randomly. This is what lead me to looking for alternatives.
Good Luck.

Twonky
Thanks for the tip, Dude... it is working now, I can see my pics/music and videos... now my desktop is useful again (as a media server for my GTab!)

Orb Fc for me. Vegan 5.1

I have done that on Windows Media Player which has all of my libraray in it, but still can't see the list using TWonky or other DLNA player. I have enabled WMP to stream, and still don't see any libraries.

[Q] DLNA Player?

Is there currently a DLNA / UPNP PLAYER (going from a server to the phone.... not the other way around) for Android?
I believe the Galaxy S phones were supposed to have one? If so, did anyone extract them?
I also would like to know if something like this is available. I can play back mp3 and jpg on my Desire HD, but not video files.
My GT-I9000 Galaxy has a program called AllShare. I just use Media player 12 on my WiN7 machine and it allows me to stream to AllShare. I can play divx movies, tv series, and other videos just fine off my home wifi network.
Gmote for audio works great.
I was looking for more for the video option. I have a ton of divx / xvid on my server.
When I use astro with the smb addon..... I can search the server but then I get an error when Rockplayer tries to play it.
estrongs isn't able to let me login for some reason.
But since my NAS has dlna and upnp I'm just looking for a simple player or app that can search dlna.
I've been looking for an app of this nature for over a year. Still no luck. I would guess that the developers that would be closest to being able to get this going would be one of the video player developers such as Rockplayer or Vplayer alpha. They've already got multi format playback for videos. Now if only they could playback these formats as a stream from dlna/upnp.........
Bumping. With the release of android based tablets dnla / upnp video players are going to be a huge win.
Anyone with a good answer?
Skifta?

I agree, AllShare works great with my Samsung TV and my laptop being the server with all the video files. My laptop has ubuntu with MiniDLNA as the server. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=732005 has a link to dlna.apk (which is allshare) weird thing is all the permissions it asks for when installing :/ even wants access to SMS which i thought was weird
for video try http://www.appbrain.com/app/vlc-stream-convert/com.gmail.traveldevel.android.vlc.app with vlc on your pc
if you want only music http://www.appbrain.com/app/twonky-mobile-free/com.pv.twonkyremote works nicely with windows media player library shararing on local network
i've been searching for a good solution for a long time now. I have an ampache server setup now but its cumbersome, none of the ampache apps on android are that great.
Does twonky work over the internet?
no it doesn't but you can smoho get vlc stream and convert working over the internet
The best I have been able to come up with is using UPnP with an app called UPnPlay - in conjunction with VPlayer (which for me is working smoother than Rockplayer).
It's not dlna but it's something.

I have played with lots of different dlna players but by FAR.... the best app is called
iMediaShare - it works perfectly with windows 7/XP (windows media player). You can play music and videos that are on your pc on either your PC (using your phone as a remote control) or play them on your phone streaming them from your PC.
Also there are TV channels like Nasa or Youtube you can use your phone as a high tech tv remote.
Amazing!
P.S My frav before this was Twonk
P.P.S My frav phone browser/streamer is 'Browsix' (again AMAZING!)
P.P.P.S my title is not right sorry, it should say IMediaShare

[Q] Streaming Media from UPnP Server

I have a 4 TB NAS appliances on our home network loaded with all our family's media. This works great for our other networked devices (blu-ray players, wii, 360, etc) and using the builf in file manager on the G I can map to the NAS. Problem comes whenever it hits some xvid/divx/mpg video files, it just won't play.
Any recommendation of an app that can do media from a network server?
There is a dlna app that comes with the droid x that I don't believe is tied into the framework. I will see if I can link the files for it.
Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk
Getting a decent uPnP client is on my list of ToDo's - I'm hoping that we can port the Archos video player over, just for that purpose.
Found a link to the APK, but I haven't tried it yet...
http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/droid-discussions/2818-droid-x-dlna-app.html
<edit> Parse Error: There is a problem parsing this package. when trying to install it via Root Explorer.
<edit2>Copied the link wrong which caused the parse error, APK installs correctly and the app runs fine as a DLNA server. ( I didn't verify connectivity), but it force-closes if you select "Network Settings Set up Wireless Access Points" possibly due to the TnT version of Settings?
either way, it makes your gTablet a server, not a client so you won't be browsing your NAS with this APK...
ah well, looks like we might be waiting for kernel source or a custom compiled kernel to get streaming video.
TheDude
I found an app called UPnPlay in the market that is working really well for me. If you are familiar with the Archos media player this has very similar capability. If you haven't done the market fix you probably won't find it though.
I was just watching a movie streaming from my Windows home server on my G tablet. Played nice.. Took it a few minutes to initially find my server but it did.

Nice tip used it and rockplayer worked perfect
This is a nice app - tried it and it found my media player (PS3MediaServer) fairly quickly. It did crash once, but it's certainly better than nothing.
It plays audio and photos well, but video seems a bit choppy on my setup so far. I have all different types of containers / codecs so I might have to find the sweet spot - Xvid / MP3 / AVI's seem to play best.
Thanks for the find!
No mkv support, but otherwise looks good
Heck, this thing even found our DirecTV HD DVR as well as the uPnP NAS!

I think it's limited by the video player - and MKV support on the GTab is very limited, unfortunately.
Fantastic Find! Thanks Sprdtyf350-
Nice!
This finds my MythTV server. I am able to play .wmv videos on the MythTV server, with the default player. But it is unable to play the MythTV recordings of OTA digital (HDTV). These are a form of mpeg-2 video, similar to what a standard DVD is. If we can find a player that can play DVD files, then I think it will play MythTV recordings too.
ORB LIVE is the answer.
Orb is the Answer to this... if we can make it work.... I use Orblive on my EVO and it works amazingly. I can stream from anywhere and it decodes most files. It runs over Wifi, 3g and if I am on the same network as my server, it goes direct without hitting the Internet. I works GREAT.
But unfortunately, it doesnt work right on my GTAB. This could be specific to my device, but it cannot stream the files. This sucks because this is one of my main uses for buying this device. With Flash fixed, I can stream through the internet via the orb.com webpage. But the App works much better. If anyone that understands the codecs of these things can figure out how to make the orblive app work, it would be amazing.
To the G tablet users using UPnPlay, how do divx files do for seeking/searching? I'm using UPnPlay on my Evo with both Rockplayer and Vplayer and neither searches or seeks particulary well..... or at all. If the video file plays with Androids native video player, it seeks just fine.
I don't want to be forced to always begin playback and the start of the video and not be able to resume where I left off if I have to leave the player/app.

[Q] (Q) play video over lan

howdy all,
i just loaded my gtablet with tnt lite 2.2.1. i love this device. i have a server with a large repository of videos avi, mkv, ect. i stream from the server to my pc's and xboxs. is there any way to play these files on the gtab (streaming from the server)? the server is running server 2008 r2 and i would rather not install anything on the server.
ive tried rockplayer and others with no luck
I was able to browse my server with es explorer find a video and play it.
Es explorer gives a "sorry, not supported media type" or tries to stream and never starts.
Still running stock gtab but one of first things I did was had copy a xvid/avi, jpg and mp3 to an SD card and surprisingly they all worked. The files wouldn't play in stock player but they would using es explorer. Just no controls going that route.
After reading this post I realized es explorer had a LAN option so I went ahead and connected my qnap nas. I tried to browse those same files but from the nas only the mp3 would play. The mp3 played but no controls. The avi gave me same error you got and the jpg said it was loading but just got a blank screen.

If your server has upnp capability you can use an app called upnplay. That, and Rockplayer works pretty well for now.
Gmote
The free app Gmote works well for me.
Doesn't transcode on the fly though.
thanks SpinKix
i use gmote on my media center pc but didnt know about the play on android feature.
what i have come too is that until there is better codex support ill have to live with gmote or orb installed on my server.
The best results I got is to install ORB on your computer ( goto orb.com) and then setup ORB to point to your media files.
Next install the FLASH plugin for the GTablet. (Search for out this site)
using the GTable web browser, Connect to you computer (Running orb using MyCast.Orb.Com)
(Note you may have to setup Port Forwarding on you home router)
Go to control panel in ORB and set streaming to FLASH and Layout to Home Theater.
You now have a easy to use interface to all your media files (If you have a TV Tuner card, you can stream your tv to your GTablet. Also Pictures and Music
upnplayer works fairly well. It plays back standard def MP4's under my PS3MediaPlayer nicely. But other container support is lacking, even standard AVI - but it is an alpha version so it might get better.
No Vorbis support. Boo for that.

Well, it DID work on TNTLite 2.2, but after flashing to VEGAn 3.0, gmote wants to play the video on the server and treats the gTab as a remote.
After trying VEGAn 3.0 I was hooked, so now I'm using Serviio on the server and upnplayer on the gTab.
Still no way to play a transcoding stream live.... frustrating!
Hope gingerbread fixes this so we don't have to wait for honeycomb.

A great big THANKS!!
I've been trying to figure out how to strange TV to my Gtab. I have both a Slingbox and a HAVA. But Slingplayer has been flaky, and I didn't realize that Orb had a Flash option. Just tried that, streaming to my Gtab using the Orb flash player.
COOL!!!

Best App (Currently) for streaming locally stored pc videos to android devices

Hey everyone-
I've been doing a bunch of searching lately for an easy-to-use and convenient application for streaming videos from my pc to android device (like airplay for the iphone). And I can't seem to find one specific app that makes it simple and easy, they all seem to be a pain in the ass. I know this question has been asked before, but not for a couple months, so what in your opinion is the best application and/or method for streaming content from a pc to an android device? Thanks in advance for any help.

If you have your PC setup with the dnla server software, this place has a beta dnla client for Andoid. I saw the write up on EuroDroid.com.

I tried using the Playon streaming with the mobile link. It worked ok...but I do want a nice streaming option.
VLC Remote
Doesn't VLC Remote just control whats playing on your desktop? I think the OP is looking for something to stream movies to his handset.
That aside, I love VLC Remote.
Yes, I'm looking to stream videos from my pc's hdd to my phone, in an easy way (i.e. in the same way that airvideo for the iphone does).

And i don't have a dlna server on my pc, it's just an external hdd connected to my pc.
I use File Expert as a file manager/explorer and I mapped my computer under it's network tab, then when I select a video I use VPlayer to play it in. Works perfectly!
Every other way I tried before this required the video to download before watching, but this way I can stream any video directly.
You will need to setup your video/movies/etc folders on PC to be shared with proper permissions. Easiest to just share the whole external HDD.

Thanks for the suggestion, I appreciate it.
Let me put it this way, is there anything as stupid simple as audiogalaxy for android that will do the same thing for music?
I'd definitely give RockPlayer a go. It has both hardware and software decoding and it works with TVersity!
Same way, through the file explorer. You just need to share your music on pc and connect to it.
My Desire HD came with DNLA client software and when I go into the music program I can stream in there directly from my WMP library, that's probably the easiest way but that would vary with different phones.
I use VLC Stream & Convert, though it is somewhat cumbersome to set up...
I ended up using windows task scheduler and a lot of program commands to start it with my computer all stealthy
Yeah, I've got windows media player set-up correctly with all the proper permissions and such. All of my media files are showing up, i.e. music, videos, etc, and all of my music plays fine as well. But, the one thing that won't play are ANY of my videos, which are mostly xvid-encoded .avi files, which I'm not sure skifta supports (as it uses the dlna classification). Any suggestions?
If you have a windows PC you can easily setup windows media player to stream via dlna. Just google "windows media player dlna". If you are on mac or linux, just substitute for OSX or your linux distro and the word dlna for a bunch of options. Once it's up and going you can use the dlna app mentioned earlier or if you are lucky enough to have a SGS like me, you can use Samsung All Share to stream. I have used this since I got my phone and it's working like a charm!

stock video player error is "contents location is not available. check network status and connected device"
stock music player error is "data connection failed"
stock gallery just shows a black tile with "media server (0)
would be nice if it worked without a 3rd party app
I'm using Plex to stream videos (movies/tv shows) to my Galaxy S3, Note 10.1 and Note 2.
Only downside is it doesnt supporr subtitles.
It's not great but it does the job.
I havent tried Plex with any music.. I might give it a try some time and let you know.
You might want to try to change your sharing settings for Public sharing on your Win7 since the device is not part of your Windows "private" network.

Any idea where? Windows7 sharing options are a pain in the ass!
So, PS3 Media Server and MedaHouse app work fine for Music and Video Streaming. But Reconverting doesn't work... Trying 840x480 Videos works fine. but 1920x1080 isn't streaming well. Seeing 1 picture for 3 seconds, some sound noises and then maybe a next picture.
Some1 tried a fullHD video on the Tablets Memory ? Does that work ?

- Go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings
- Under Public - Media streaming you will find "Choose media streaming options", click on that.
- From there you will see "Show devices on:" choose All networks.
- If your device isnt listed there by name, then it must be marked as an "Unknown Device" and is Blocked on the right, Allow them one by one and see if it shows up on your device.
But i have some bad news, when I tested that myself and doing this makes it show just fine using my Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 to play Music or Videos on my machine, but not Galaxy Note 10.1 for some reason!

it works!
No Idea why! But i startet up Media Player on my Laptop today and then used media house for remote control! don't ask me why but I also startet up normal media player and pressed "find near" it found the laptop and worked!!!
gotta test if it works on my normal pc too...
Edit: NO it doesn't ! But only the Music library seems broken! Pictures and Videos do work!
Installed Twonky 7 now... that seems to work!
Oh well. i've tested a few DLNA/UPnP Apps on my tablet.
Twonky Beam (outdated) and BubbleUPnP Are my favorite atm. Mainly because they support DMR so you can play stuff from any other DNLA device ON the Tablet! Twonky beam is better because you can play music from Tablet to computer and also at the same tame from phone to the tablet!
If you try that with BubbleUPnP it stops the laptop playing from the Tablet!
But on the other hand If you use Twonky Beam to stream Youtube Videos to the Laptop you can't minimize it! BubbleUPnP works fine minized
BubbleUPnP also has a Player control on the Lockscreen and in the notificaton Menue. And it's easier to use chose server/Device and Library.

I really don't understand whats the problem...my galaxy 10.1 finds and plays all my music that is shared over the network (either from desktop pc, laptops or other devices connected to wifi. Stock music player works flawlesly and finds all music if i choose nearby devices. Another option is allshare that finds and plays media from computers, wd tv live hub and other phones/tablets. So either I don't understand what the problem is, or you are doing something wrong. I can even get music to note from my network server over wifi and then stream it to my dlna sony hifi. It works flawlessly. My only complaint is that apparently dlna doesn't support mp3 tags so you can't filter music by artists, albums, ...
qloud player
I currently using mediatomb for mp3. Note 2 stock player can connect to it. As for movie Qloud also a good choice. easy and play fast. also can play using 3G.
It was a Problem with Windows 7 Media server!
Btw, Using Synology DSaudio ... You need a Synology NAS as Source but you can stream it to any DLNA player. Has a nice interface.
