[Root for the HTC Magic/Sapphire] (from haykuro) (updated 5/23)

I was reading the threads in the dream forum and found his progress and instructions. I added them to my wiki so they can be continually edited and updated as new methods are found. I did not have any part in this but I noticed that there was not a formal post here about it yet so I decided to make one.

I was pasting the new instructions here every time they changed but they seem to change often. Please visit the above url to see the current instructions. They were placed on the the wiki so anyone could make edits and changes to them, which is useless if this post needs to be updated each time. I wish vbulletin had some sort of wiki quote that could auto read that page and insert it here for me

Just quoting the solution here..
First of all, everyone owes Haykuro a great big thanks for working on this and helping create the solution without even owning a magic. The following is his method just reworded slightly.
1. To gain root access on your HTC Magic/Sapphire you will need to download the magic-root-boot.img zip file and unzip it so that you have boot-new.img in a location you can find.
2. On your device, enter the bootloader by trying one of the following
* Turn off your device and while it is off hold down home while you press power.
* Turn off your device and while it is off hold down volume down while pressing power
3. Make sure your usb cable is inserted and you have Fastboot installed and ready to use.
4. Type the following commands on your desktop (not on the device):

5. wait for the following to flash and the phone to reboot:

downloading 'boot-new.img'... OKAY

booting... OKAY
6. make sure you have ADB installed and run the following commands from your desktop (not on the device):

adb shell flash_image boot /sdcard/boot-new.img

I was going to post the actual text here but the reason for doing it in the wiki is because the methods seem to change very often (the g1 method changed almost daily for a while). I would still recommend viewing the instructions on the wiki before performing the method to be sure they are the same at the time of use.

Full procedure so far!
1. Download boot-new.img.zip from http://www.droiddeveloper.com/hrbuilds/boot-new.img.zip
2. extract boot-new.img to computer.
3. Download recovery-new.img.zip from http://www.droiddeveloper.com/hrbuilds/recovery-new.img.zip
4. extract recovery-new.img to computer.
5. power off device
6. hold BACK+POWER (or VOLUME_DOWN+POWER) to boot into bootloader.

wait for device to boot.
[b]adb push boot-new.img /sdcard/boot-new.img[/b]
[b]adb push recovery-new.img /sdcard/recovery-new.img[/b]

[b]adb shell reboot[/b]
you now have root build, and can flash whatever build you like (test keys and all)

I have a french Magic and I test this solution.
I have a problem, when I use the adb shell, I am "root", but when I use a terminal shell on the phone I'm not "root". I use "id" for my test.
How can I do ?

I make these commands after in adb shell:
# mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system

# cd bin
# cat sh > su
# chmod 4755 su

ok i have a big problem when i put (fastboot boot boot-new.img) the phone is restarting every time in htc presentation :S

i put the phone in recovery mode ( fastboot usb ), but then i have the same problem, when i put fastboot boot boot-new.bin, the phone restart always with "boot.bin" , no with "boot-new.bin"...
i try to give the complete path, but always the same result

unrar de SDK, and in the "tools" directory you have the ADB and FASTBOOT aplications ( use in the console mode )

Works perfectly with XP, not with vista or win7

[GUIDE] How To Root The Sprint CDMA Hero (Windows)

I have compiled this guide from the other one posted on this forum, the discussion therein, and my own knowledge. If you have any suggestions on making it better or to correct any mistakes I may have made please let me know.
This guide is intended for Windows and includes detailed instructions. It will cover the steps necessary to root, flash the new recovery image, create a full backup. This will work with software versions 1.29.651.1 and 1.56.651.2 (aka Android 1.5). If you have updated to 2.1 please following this guide here. I am not responsible for any damage done to your phone using this guide. Root at your own risk.
I have put to together a video on YouTube for you to follow along as well. The version numbers of certain files are now outdated in the video so change file names as necessary.
If you own a non-Sprint Hero, you will need to do some extra steps. Follow the guide in the How to Root Non-Sprint CDMA Hero thread.
Step 1: Download the Android SDK from http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html The Windows file is called android-sdk_r06-windows.zip. Extract the files to your C: drive so that you now have the folder C:\android-sdk-windows
Step 2: Download the asroot2 exploit file from http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=244212&d=1257621154 Extract asroot2.zip to C:\android-sdk-windows\tools folder.
Step 3: Download the Hero recovery image from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4898505&postcount=1g Place this file in C:\android-sdk-windows\tools as well.
Step 4: Make sure USB Debugging is off by going to Settings>Applications>Development. Now connect the phone to your PC via USB cable.
Step 5: Mount your sdcard; Browse to the HTC Sync folder and install HTC Sync on your pc. After it is done installing unmount the sdcard then enable your USB debugging.
Step 6: Open a command prompt by clicking the Start button and typing cmd into the search box and pressing enter or found under All Programs>Accessories.
Step 7: You will now enter a series of commands which I will place inside code boxes to indicate the entire command. You may copy and then paste them into the command prompt window by right clicking. Only enter one command at a time.

If you get "device not found" error, you either need to make sure you the drivers were properly installed or make sure you enable USB debugging AFTER you connect the USB cable. Step 8: This is the last command; you may now close the cmd prompt. This will cause your phone to boot into recovery mode; it should take no longer than 30 secs. The third option on the list is "- Backup/Restore"; select it. Now, select the first option "- Nand backup". The phone will prompt you to press HOME to confirm which is want you want to do. The backup will begin. You will see the screen say, "Performing backup : .........." When done, the bottom of the screen will say "Backup complete!" and you will be given the menu options again. Go back to the main menu and select reboot system. Rebooting your phone after installing the new recovery image may take several minutes.
Step 9: Once your phone is fully booted, mount the sdcard. You will see a folder called "nandroid"; I highly recommend you copy this to your pc in case you lose your sdcard data or reformat it. Your phone is rooted, 100% backed up, and ready to install a custom rom if you wish!

instructions worked great on Win7
i was able to download the missing usb_drivers by running SDK Setup in C:\android-sdk-windows, and selecting the usb driver from the available packages. I was unable to download the index for the SDK Setup program until I enabled "force http://" in the settings menu.
had to copy over asroot again after i ran SDK Setup (that program deleted it from the directory)
your instructions worked like a charm. total time spent rooting this thing after finding your post: 18 minutes.
(you might want to add a line there in the "mount and copy over the zip file step" to backup the nandroid folder from your SDCard to your comp just as a backup of your stock phone image)
anyway.. cheers!

Heh, thanks for the misspell heads up. I did my rooting from Win7 pc; it automatically installed correct drivers for me. To check go to the Control Panel>View devices and printers. You see one device named "Android Phone". Otherwise as far as Ive heard installing HTC Sync installs proper drivers.​

This guide is for the CDMA Hero not the Eris!

When I go to apply the rom I get an white screen with skateboarding androids on the bottom and the prompt to erase data yes/no. I press the home key and the Hero reboots without asking to "Apply sdcard:choose zip". This is done from the boot menu. Does the rom load automatically? Did I do something wrong? I got root with no problem. A tip; to make it easier and to avoid spelling mistakes copy and paste the rooting commands from the instructions. Made it go faster too. Thanks in advance.
Never mind. I held down Home and Power at
the same time instead of Home THEN power! ARRGH! Loading up now as I type. Sorry.

yuck... break up your sentences, that's alot of crap to throw on someone all at once... and the bold doesn't help it any.
check to see if you have the custom recovery installed....
-turn off phone
-hold vol down + power
-should search for some stuff then give three options
-press "home" to enter recovery image
do you see "!" and a phone.... does it just hang or do you see a green/yellow menu?

At the end of his post he says he figured it out. He wasn't holding down home key

None of this is working for me at all... I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but every time I enter ANY of the commands into the prompt all I get is "cannot find the path specified".
For reference, i have done everything in this guide to the letter, everything is downloaded, unzipped to the correct location, USB drivers installed, etc etc. Not sure what's wrong.
EDIT: I figured it out.. user error, awesome. Worked great, thanks for this!

That was the name of the zip file not the extracted folder.

Please help, I followed all of your instructions, I received no errors however I can't boot the recovery image. I checked and it is in the sd card, but every time it just hangs at the HTC logo
I downloaded a terminal emulator and typed su and it gave me # so I assuming I am rooted?!

Redownload the recovery image and reflash it. The one you're using probably became corrupt during DL or something.

also make sure you have the heroc version there's a hero and heroC, i messed that up once and had similar results

new ROM
So i loaded the custom ROM, and i followed all the istructions as listed on this guide. When i rebooted my phone, a bunch of my apps started Force Closing on startup.
did i miss something, or do something wrong?
if i reinstall them on the new ROM will they work right?

you converted your sd card to fat32,ext2,swap and now the apps are looking for the program on your sd card,
turn off your phone
take out sd card
turn on phone
uninstall app
turn off phone
put in sd card
turn on phone
reinstall app
this should fix you

[Huawei IDEOS U8150] How to gain root access

I hold no responsibility to how you use or not use this info and if you brick phone - you do this at your own risk
There is a couple away you can go about gaining root access with this phone I have tested all 3 ways but only had success with 2 of them.
a) You can download 'z4root' from the Android Market (If is still available) or search XDA forums for it.
b) Search the XDA forums for 'SuperOneClick' which requires mono to work on Linux. I have read people that have had success with 'SuperOneClick' but that was not the case for me.
c) My preferred method:
Prerequisite:
knowledge of Linux and Terminal
knowledge of ADB (guide available in forums)
I did all this using Debian (testing) 64bit, Android SDK.
Creating correct permissions to access the phone via USB:
i) create

/etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules
ii) in the file put

SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="12d1", MODE="0666"
iii) then

chmod a+r /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules
iv) restart udev or reboot
Downloading and/or Installing required software:
1) Downloading and installing the android-sdk from: developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
2) Downloading and extracting 'SuperOneClick' (you will only need these 5 files: rageagainstthecage, sqlite3, su, busybox and superuser.apk)
3) Copy rageagainstthecage, sqlite3, su, busybox and superuser.apk into the platform-tools directory of android-sdk. Put phone in debug mode.
4) From a terminal (command line) change to the android/platform-tools directory and carefully do these steps.
Check to see if adb can see your phone properly:

You should see the serial number of you device, if you see bunch of '?' you have done something wrong.
Now for the fun part rooting the phone: <= no phun intended hehe

5) Now wait until you get kicked out from adb before you do the following:

Guide reflash FW for those who did some damage:
* Download from here that you want to install the FW
* Copy the folder in the microSD DLOAD (with the file inside UPADATE.APP)
* From phone off, Volume + Hold down RED BUTTON UP and power button.
* start the firmware upgrade, take a few minutes and then restart the phone . is a bit slow, do not be afraid, let him work and then back on (like the first time)
Help to get into recovery mode:
* down the 'volume up 'and 'green button'and then switch the device
Guide to bootloader mode:
* switch off, press and hold power button + volume down + red key

Yes it can, to a Maximum of 600mhz (0.6 ghz) on the stock kernel
setCPU is no longer available on the market for free afaik.
Also can someone better translate the instructions to get into recovery mode? i can barely make sense of the above instructions ^^^

Although after reading the entire page, i wonder if i should have a Recovery ROM installed. But i wonder if the phone will be left in it's current working state after installing it ?

I think only "su" should be 4755 (setuid root), busybox and sqlite3 should just be 0755? Thanks for the instructions.

I do not want to install another ROM.
I do not know why you can not run z4root and a file manager from the SD card I have tried methods with the SDK they are total rubbish.

I have Z4root on the phone and its supposedly rooted.
Yet, I can install apps from PC onto phone, but can not uninstall them.
Adb always gives me failure.
And if I try from shell it always says permission denied.

Just worked perfectly on my IDEOS brought from 2degrees in NZ.
The copy of SuperOneClick that I downloaded contained a file called su-v2 instead of su. In order to get the hack to work I had to rename su-v2 to su before running ./rageagainstthecage . Pretty obvious, but it might help someone out.

I followed your instructions and installed SetCPU to test my phone was rooted. It worked great! Thanks.
I still have a problem. When I try adb root it still says "adbd cannot run as root in production builds". I'm trying this to be able to control my phone with pc mouse/keyboard with androidscreencast.
Any suggestions will be much appreciated.
Answering to myself: I updated my phone with FUSIONideos 1.5 and now adb runs as root without problems.

I know some of you are still roaming around here and there trying to root your phone; others wanting to root the phone without knowing what rooting is...
Wandering if it's illegal or not; and why should they be Rooting their Devices.
Well that's why i've done this tutorial with a lot of help from different sources.
It has been almost 2 days reading; reading; reading; and writing this tutorial to simplify and compact information scattered around this forum and the web.
Knowing the Basics
In order to explain everyone (specially noobs / starters); please follow this link.
(I advise you to open it in a "new Tab" or "Window"; so you don't loose yourself)
One thing before starting:
I found out that it is important to reboot the device and the PC after installing and Updating the following apps: "Super one Click" and SDK with your firmware version API's.
Some errors that occur during the Rooting with the "Super One Click" happen due to some kind of need to reboot of the machine and device.
As mentioned in Step #9

Now that you understand what rooting is; let's ROOT your Android.
P.S - As you already know; you are responsible for doing this process; or for anything that goes wrong.
“Rooting Your Android Phone”
Requirements:
Download: "android-sdk_r15" or Later Version.
After Downloading and Installing SDK; download the API's according to your Firmware Version.
(Check Step #1 and #12 of the Easy Rooting Method)
Download: "Super One Click Program"
(Link Goes to XDA Developers "Super one Click Program" Thread)
Download: "Java SE Development Kit 7" (or later)
I. (Easy Method - Using “One Click Rooting Program”)
Note: This method works for almost every Android phone.
1) Take a note of you brand model and android Firmware/ROM installed on you device.
(You need to know the version of your O.S to download your SDK API's later)
i.e:
“Model: Acer C4 Liquid Mini (E310)”
“O.S: Android Froyo v2.2”
2) Download/Install your Android Drivers. (PC)
3) Download/Install your Android SDK/ADB. (PC)
4) Open SDK (as Administrator) and mark the following things to download:
- “Tools” (Select the entire Folder)
- “Your Firmware/ROM Version Installed” (i.e: “Android 2.2 API”) (Select the entire Folder)
5) Now press “Install Packages” (The download will start; follow the next step after it’s completed)
6) Download / Install the Latest version of the rooting program (Super One Click Rooting Program); unzip it and install it on your computer.
7) Make sure that your phone has the "USB Debugging Mode" ON.
NOTE: To turn it on go to your device and press: “Menu” > “Settings” (Icon) > “Applications” > “Debug / Development” > “USB Debug”
8) Make sure you turn Off your Device and Remove the SD Card. It must be done without the SD Card.
9) Safely disconnect your Phone from the PC; and restart. (PC and Device)
10) When your Phone and Windows are ready; connect your phone to the PC.
Note: Just plug the cable. Do NOT select any option in the Phone.
Also you will notice that a small Android Icon will appear at the top left of the screen.
That means that you phone is prepared for debugging Mode.
11) Once again make sure that your phone has the "USB Debugging Mode" ON.
12) Run SDK/ADB as Administrator.
(Windows XP Users just double click to open)
13) Right Click the “Super One Click Rooting Program” and open it as Administrator.
(Or just double click; if you are using Windows XP)
14) Press "Update Check"; just to make sure you have the latest files. (Don't worry with the app version error; if it happens means you just downloaded it/you have the latest version)
14) Click the "Root" button and wait it to finish. (There should be no errors)
15) Once done; you should see “Superuser” permission in your phone’s apps.
Note: If so; your Device is Rooted. Congratulations!
II. (Advanced Method - Manually Rooting)
Pre-requisites
There are a few things that you need to have before you start rooting.
Obviously, you will need an Android device with Android 1.5 or higher and a USB cable to connect it to your computer.
You will also need to have some files for this:
SuperOneClick.zip and the Android SDK/ADB up and running on your computer.
(Run as Administrator if not using Windows XP)
If you are unfamiliar with ADB, GoodAndEvo site has an awesome ADB tutorial that should get you up to speed.
(Note that the tutorial in the Good and Evo Page is for HTC Devices)
First, we need to move some files around to make running commands a bit easier.
Unzip the SuperOneClick.zip and copy the following files: su-v3, busybox, Superuser.apk, psneuter, and GingerBreak; to the Android “ADB Platform-Tools folder”; which is contained in the Android SDK folder on your computer.
i.e: C:\Program Files\Android\Android-SDK\Platform-Tools\
These files can be found in the following SuperOneClickv2.1.1-ShortFuse folders:
- “Busybox” -> “Dependencies” folder
- “psneuter” -> “Exploit” folder
- “GingerBreak” -> “Exploits” folder
- “SuperUser.apk” -> “Root” folder
- “SU-V3” -> “Root” folder
Once copied rename “su-v3” to “su”.
If you are on Windows, you will also need to have proper drivers for your phone installed.
These can usually be found by going either to the manufacturer website or searching for the name of your phone and the word "Drivers."
Once you find drivers, download and install them like any other application.
Rooting your device
Now that you have ADB setup and the proper exploit files, you are finally ready to Root.
Before you start running commands, you need to put your phone in "USB Debugging" mode.
(Menu > Settings > Applications > Development > Enable USB Debugging) and connect the device to your computer.
Note: Just plug the cable and do not select any option in you device.
Now, open command prompt to run some commands.
Windows Vista/7 Users:
(Press "Windows Key" > Type: "CMD" > Right Click on "CMD" and Run it as Administrator)
In Linux, open whichever terminal emulator suits you. Once you have a command prompt, you need to enter your platform-tools folder, also called a directory.
You can use the "CD" or Change Directory command to accomplish this.
If your SDK folder is called "android-sdk" the command should look like this: cd android-sdk_r11-windows/platform-tools.
This command will leave you with a shell prompt in the platform-tools directory.
From here, you can run the commands that will actually root your phone.
Be sure to run these commands exactly as they are written.
The commands with an "$" or "#" will only run after the "adb shell" command.
First, here are the commands that run the” psneuter” exploit and gain a root shell.
Type them in the following order.
…Yes after the ADB and the “$” there is a “Space”.
• adb devices
• adb push psneuter /data/local/tmp
• adb shell
• $ cd /data/local/tmp
• $ chmod 777 psneuter
• $ ./psneuter
At this point, the exploit will run and close the shell.
You will need to run these commands to restart the ADB server.
• adb kill-server
• adb devices
Now comes the moment of truth.
Type:
• adb shell
...command to open a shell.
If you see a "#" sign, you have root access, so go ahead and continue to the next part of this tutorial.
If not, you can go back and try the previous steps again, or ask for help in the comments.
We now need to make this root permanent.
From the root shell you just opened, type the following commands.
• # mount -o remount,rw -t rfs /dev/block/st19 /system
• # exit
• adb push busybox /system/bin
• adb push su /system/bin
• adb install Superuser.apk
• adb shell
• # chmod 4755 /system/bin/busybox
• # chmod 4755 /system/bin/su
• # mount -o remount,ro -t rfs /dev/block/st19 /system
• # exit
• adb reboot
At this point, your device should reboot.
You can check for the Superuser icon in the app drawer, and then try a root only app like Titanium Backup.
If that app works, congratulations!
You have successfully rooted your Android device.
Prepare to enjoy all the benefits of root.

Greetings;
What's your device Make and Model?
Try/Check the following:
- Download the "Super One Click Program" Again. Since there is a new Fix for it.
Follow this Link to download and get more detailled info:

- Check that you have the USB Debug Turned ON (in your device)
---> List > Settings > Applicatons > Development > USB Debugging
- Check what version do you have in your device; and verify that SDK Manager has downloaded your Version API's; and Tools folder. (Look at status tab; it should say installed)
- Did you Restart the machine after the install of Super One Click and SDK Manager? (Only then Root the Device)
- In a Last case there's a small percentage that your phone isn't compatible with "Super One Click".

Karbonn A9 adb root (FINAL HOPE)

Requirements and rooting process
1 > Your pitiable unrooted Karbonn A9 Android device
2 > ADB drivers for your device installed on your pc (I used WinXP. You may use Win 7/Vista or the Linux distro of your choice)
3 > su , busybox , Superuser.apk
4 > A working linux distro with Nautilus (use a live usb stick of Ubuntu 11.04)
5 > Strength, courage and whatever makes you a man !!!!!
Rooting Process
To start, you must have adb installed on the OS of your choice.
I used my trusty WinXP system .
To confirm your device is properly detected, in the command prompt , run -
CODE -
adb devices
Now copy busybox, su, superuser.apk to /data/local/tmp/ using adb.
CODE -
adb push busybox /data/local/tmp
adb push su /data/local/tmp
adb push Superuser.apk /data/local/tmp
Now run adb shell .
CODE -
adb shell
Note that you see a "$" sign in the command prompt. That means you are not rooted . Next run the following commands in the shell to change permissions and get some limited privileges for the Superuser files:
CODE -
chmod 6755 /data/local/tmp/su
chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/busybox
chmod 644 /data/local/tmp/Superuser.apk
Note that the names of the files are case sensitive.
Done?
Turn off your Android device using the power button.
Now you need to reboot your system into a Linux distro which has Nautilus.
Android and Linux, having a similar heritage, makes it possible for us to get root access over the Android phone if you are running with root privileges within Linux. I used an Ubuntu 11.04 Live USB disk to save the hassle of installing another os.
When you have booted into Linux, open up terminal and type:
CODE -
sudo nautilus
This would open up the Nautilus file browser with root privileges.
Now put your Android device into Download mode . for the karbonn A9 the method is to hold down the Volume up button and simultaneously turn on the phone using the power on switch.
Once in download mode, connect the Android device using the microusb cable to the computer.
Now using the open Nautilus window, navigate to /UserData/local/tmp/ folder and verify that you have the files you sent to the device viz. su, busybox and Superuser.apk
Move/cut-paste su and busybox to /system/bin/ using Nautilus.
Move/cut-paste Superuser.apk to /system/app/ using Nautilus.
Now pull out the battery from your Android device.
Now simply turn on your device.
You must now have root.
Verify by running:
CODE -
adb shell
su
You'll note that the "$" prompt will turn into a "#" and you'll be prompted by a Superuser permission notification on your
device
WOOHOO !!!! YOU NOW HAVE ROOT ON YOUR PHONE !!!!

The problem is that nautilus just wont list our device's folders.
And download mode is opened by pressing Vol down + power for A9,
Vol up + Power opens fastboot.
