Hardware mode with higher res WMV files crashes and forces reboot - G Tablet General

Anybody else having this issue?
Higher def wmv files cause the the device to lag, crash and then reboot from splash screen. Does not matter if Rockplayer or stockplayer. Rockplayer with HW acceleration on or stock player equals same result.
If HW is off, Rockplayer works, but slow (of course). Seems this is a hardware acceleration issue, since impact stock player as well (no way to turn accleration off).
At one point earlier one (3.0 level), Rockplayer and stock worked great with the files. Have had this issue with 3.14 and Clem kernel and 4.1 with stock kernel.

I tried looking up some HD WMV files to test but it's almost all porn or pirated movies (looks at rushless all *i know what you're watching-like*) jk!
Trying some .exe files I found now. :/
Update 1:
Ok so here's what I have to report. Played fine then I updated to 1.6.1 and now it won't play it. Going to shut down and come back up and try again. If it still doesn't I'm going to go back to the old version.
Plays fine in the native video player. When I come back up I will be trying Doubletwist and whatever else I have.
Update 2:
I went back to Rockplayer 1.5.5 which is what I think I had? But now I see nothing and it sounds funky. Doubletwist and the native player play it fine. No reboots or anything though either way, thankfully.
3899 Stock. The file I used is Amazon IMAX, 1080p WMV file sourced here.

Well if it was adult material, I would be REALLY ticked off at the problem
If I try running high res WMV files with stock player or Rock with hardware acceleration turned on: Seems linked to the hardware accleration function.
1. App crashes back to home screen
2. Device becomes sluggish
3. Short time after, device reboots to splash screen and works okay
TnT Lite 4.1 with stock kernel.

Since My ChinaTab NoName can play divx...sooo

How do we get from point A to B with all of our other devices. My Telechip 8902 tablet can play unaltered 624x352 standard xvid files without a hiccup, right from the Gallery. Obviously they are including a codec or something somewhere that gets this working. Where do we start to extracting that info and cooking it into ROMs. The latest crop of players like Rock Player are ok, but even RockPlayer plays WORSE than the native gallery on my tablet. Even thumbnails work....
Maybe I am just being naive, but what's missing that we can't extract. My tablet is running 2.1 and it works perfect. For giggles I tossed in some mkv samples with aac and mp3 and they worked as well.
The chinese tablets has a DSP (digital signal processor) especially to process media files hence they are able to play back most video files without a hitch.

[Q] video player problems

I'm having random problems with the stock player. It will work sometimes, but after watching a few trailers it will cause the tablet to lock up and I have to hold power to reboot.
I also have the rock player. It works sometimes, but other times it will also lock up the entire tablet.
I'm running the latest viewsonic update with the google apps and full market access.
Anyone else seeing these kinds of problems?
It is consistent on certain files? And certain h264 files in particular?
h264 high profile files don't work on the Tegra 2. They can be choppy and sometimes even freeze up the device completely.
I've haven't had any problem with h264 files, but any windows media player video files, I get audio but no video
Yeah, I'm still trying to decide if I should keep this tab or not. I want to be able to watch videos without some of them making the device lockup.
Does anyone know if this is a hardware issue with the Tegra chip or something can be solved with software or codecs?
Thanks

TF Barely plays 480p video! (32GB, Prime ROM)

I'm having trouble figuring out what's going on here. My Asus Transformer (Prime Rom, dual-core 1ghz Tegra with 1gb RAM, ~20gb free SSD space) Is having problems playing video. It stuters the sound (rarely), or the sound plays normal 1:1 but the video plays at a speed of 1:2 or worse (1/2 speed) so after a few seconds its unwatchable, not to mention that if I watch 15+ seconds it crashes the app. Also, if there are Subtitles, they keep pace with the audio without issue. on a few rare occasions, (notably 1 set of rips) the video plays fine but the audio is severely compromised where people speaking sounds like somone playing notes on a low-quality synthesizer...
Most videos are encoded as MKV (varying audio codecs, all the way from low-quality 56kb all the way up to FLAC)
I've played off internal storage, MicroSD, Dock+USB (flash and USB HDD), Dock+SDHC, none seem to make a difference.
My guess is that it's a app or rom issue, since my EVO (1ghz single core, 512mb ram, CYM rom) plays full 1080p video without a hiccup (while mirroring it over HDMI!!!).
Can anyone suggest a player that will play 720p without a problem? 1080p would be nice. If this is an Android problem, is there any kind of workaround without down-grading my videos? (I mean 480p already doesnt look great on my TF's screen, 240p would REALLY suck...)
You never mentioned what player you're using, but Tegra 2 doesn't support MKV containers properly, it needs to be fed raw h264 streams for hardware acceleration to kick in. The only player that does this is DicePlayer. It'll demux the mkv file and decode video with hardware and audio with software giving you lagless experience. Your experience with FLAC may vary though.

I tried the built-in video as well as "Mobo Player" which claimed it had MKV support.
Someone else on another forum suggested Dice, since it's got a free trial I'll be installing it this weekend and seeing how well it works. (While I would have preferred a free solution I'm willing to pay a few dollars to support devs as long as they're not asking like $19.99 or something for a dinky little app)
I'll report back if I can get it working later, thanks for the explanation!
Give Dice Player a try. It's by far the best player now. It claims to us the actual hardware instead of software decoding.
Hmm, do you have streaming problems too? For some reason, my netflix seems to be lagging in video now. It didn't use to (pure-root, no prime) then it did (prime 1.8? 1.6? can't remember but it was 1.x), didn't lag (2.0.1) but is now laggy again (2.0.3 or whatever the latest patch is).
I'm getting mixed results.
Yes, a certain number of videos will play now, but some still wont it still says it's unable to use hardware decoding. However these are 720p and 1080p (480p plays fine now) so I'm wondering if it's an HD issue... (Yes I did install the Tegra Plugin) So it _IS_ an improvement... I'll have to compare the encoding info to see what else is different between the ones that play and the ones that dont...
Overall, I am pleased with Dice and will likely put up the $6 the developer is asking for. it DOES appear to be Hardware decoding and hopefully it will only improve from here (considering my EVO, with half the specs, can decode + Mirror 1080p I assume this is an issue that will be resolved with time and dev work on the app/plugin)
@ asdfuogh:
I've not done any updates. I bought it used with Prime pre-installed, so I cant really compare. I dont have netflix but I'll try some of the longer youtube streams and see if they hiccup (I was having issues earlier with youtube but I was also on cellular so I had limited bandwidth to work with)

The thing with Dice is, it'll use Hardware acceleration for Main Profile 1080p (I forgot what level) and High Profile 720p with certain reference frames, etc. Exceed it and Tegra 2 can't decode it so it becomes software. I believe the full specification can be found through a search "tegra 2 h264 decoding profile"
After digging through the dumps of the videos I found my problem.
I mislabeled them...
What I labed as "720p" had a resolution of "1920x1080" I had switched to true HD recording about the time I got my BluRay drive (as opposed to my old HD-DVD drive) and for some reason screwed up and labled some BR rips as 720p...
After comparing the dumps and re-labeling, I've found nothing 720p or lower that Dice wont play (and with shocking efficiency! 2-3 hours of 720p playback (mostly over internal speaker) from my USB HDD and I am still at 97% power!!!
I'll still look over the codecs that Tegra can support, maybe I can find a way to get a "low profile" 1080p sometime, but for now since I dont have anything except my PC monitor that can exceed 720p, I'm good ^_^
Thank you all for your help!
EDIT:
Nevermind the 97% bit, I forgot the dock had a seperate battery, the dock was down to 16%... though I think that's still impressive for what I was doing...

Unfortunately hardware decode of HD H264/AAC files is still broken with HC 3.2.1. It used to work with 3.1, but got broken with 3.2. It doesn't matter which player you use.
I have a ticket open with Asus. They initially said they would fix it in 3.2.1, but didn't. When I then told them this in the ticket I had open, they said "nobody has reported a problem". This is in the very same ticket where I reported the break 2 months ago! I got quite cross at this point as it clearly hasn't been passed up the chain.
Anyway, they have promised to look into it. I've supplied them with a file that plays back with hardware decode in 3.1, but doesn't in 3.2.X. Let's hope they sort it out soon.

I have to agree with this. MX Player is all I use now. It will dim the button bar and notifications, blank the tablet screen when connected to HDMI, and can easily play back all my (previously) problem mkv files with hardware on the video and software on the audio.
And its free, something DICE player cannot claim.
Rockplayer
Try Rockplayer.

Problem playing videos

Okay, now that's strange. Today I updated my P5113 to UEBLH3 (newest official version) and that strange problem still exists.
H/W acc video codecs seem to dissapear after short using of the tab. When I restart sometimes I can play videos, sometimes it says "Sorry, this video cannot be played." Mostly affected are DivX and xVid avi files. Other players don't work in HW mode also. I hoped that updating to latest firmware would fix the problem, but apparently it's still here for me.
Is there anybody else who experiences something like that?
Try dice player work good with hardware acceleration
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Thats not the point. The question is how come system video codecs stop working just like that? They arent accessible from other players also. Like the OS doesnt support HW acc. I want to use stock video player since its the best player for me (and plays all videos FULL screen)

[Q] A question which i can't find a proper answer for. Answers in first post.

So what is high bigmem and bigmem? I know that it gets me more usable ram with a sacrifice of something. For example my 720p mkv video playback was broken. Was it becasuse of the rom or the kernel? I came from stock rom. On the stock rom I could watch "How I met your mother" 720p mkv but now I can. So the question is. How can I get the HW accelerated 720p mkv video playback back without losing vodoo sound and others? I tried non high bigmem versions but just didn't work. Any help would be much apriciated!
Edit:
Here's the answers in case anybody come across to this problem in the future. It was kernel related. To be exact it's bigmem I think. I've installed the stock ROM (with stock kernel ofcourse) and the video just started using the hw decoder. smooth 720p mkv. No lag at all. With subtitles. After that I installed a kernel with bigmem ( marmite 5.1 stock edition) and the video playback no longer worked. Now I'm using stock ROM with Simple kernel. Damn! I didn't know the stock ROM is faster than the AOKP one.

thanks for the tip but it didn't work for me. I can hear the sound but no video. After a few seconds the player freezes. Nowhere near compared to the stock. Anybody please help. I don't know whether it's the rom or the kernel. I'm using rasbeanjelly with marmite v5.

try air kernel or matrix
or it maybe the case of just re-flashing the ROM

I'll try matrix kernel! I've used air kernel for about 2-3 (when new version came out I upgraded immediately) but I could not watch 720p mkv either. I really miss 720p mkv playback feature but I just don't wanna go back to stock. So all my hope is in matrix kernel

yes it's really cool! Latest rasbean jelly is 4.1.2. I would flash the stock rom if it had volume rocker music controls. it's the only thing which is holding me back.
On my Vibrant which is the same hardware, I use MX Player, generally h/w acceleration for video and set audio to software decoding. Play most MKV with no problem. The older version 1.6 also have a fast software mode that make it capable of playing almost any videos smoothly, but they took it away with the new version.
The bitrate of the video and your internal storage read speed do determine the playback smoothness.

I'm using mx player too but it only plays that in software decoding mode. When I choose hw decoding mode it says that it cannot play it in hw decoding mode. Hw+ decoding mode won't work either. Tomorrow I'll flash back the stock rom with different kernel. See if it works.
Ps: Matrix kernel didn't work either. No hw playback.
It means the player do not have codec to decode that video, maybe you should reencode it to h.264 in mp4 container.
Also I recommend keeping a copy of the MX Player 1.6, it can even manage most hd video in software fast decoding. Sure it won't be highest quality, but the Nexus screen isn't exactly HD.

Playerpro music player has volume rocker controls.
If I recall correctly while the vibrant has basically the same hw it also has different hw. Including decoders. Like with the missing encoder for 720p video recording with the camera for example.
Can't remember exactly but I think it was Samsung with the galaxy s line that was able to play back mostly anything because they included encoders and all the licensing that goes along with it. Then again maybe not. I'm sure others know more or you can just investigate it yourself
