[Q] Andro and unzipping - Android Apps and Games

Okay, so I have downloaded a icons zip file. I see it in andro as an unzipped file. How exactly do I get the entire file over to my gallery?

If I'm following you correctly, you have unzipped the icons and see them in Andro but not in the gallery? If so, you need to get Android to rescan your SD card for media files. Search the market, there's plenty of apps that'll prompt Android to rescan for media, or just reboot your phone - it'll scan on boot.

Nevermind. Figured it out.

Changing Market App Icons

Hello,
I did some searching before posting this and have come up with little results that are working for me. I have been able to change my stock icon apps using the method on androidcentral (sorry, can not post links yet). However, trying the same thing with Free Market Apps, I have been unsuccessful.
I am able to get the com.*.*.apk file off of my phone, and can extract the res folder, but after editing and pushing the file back onto the phone, the application is "uninstalled." I believe that I have to sign the apk file again, which I've tried doing with no success.
What I do not understand, is the app Bettercut has the ability to change these Market App Icons, so I thought we should be able to do so as well. If anyone has any knowledge of how to do this, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks
Hey you
Change your graphics. Uninstall the app from your phone, put the edited .apk on your sd card and install it with astro (or another app that installs apk files). If you update from market you'll lose customizations.
Hiya.
Yeah, I tried that, but I keep getting unable to install. I do have non-market apps checked, but still no luck. I'm basically just editing the graphic from the com.*.*.apk file, opeing the com.*.*.apk file with 7zip, placing the new graphic in the res/drawable folder, closing 7zip, then I put the com.*.*.apk file onto my SD card (after uninstalling original app) then use astro to install. Doing this is not working. I thought I might have to sign the apk file, rename it or something. Not really sure at this point.

I got it to work by pushing the .apks back through adb and not using a File Manager. I changed a bunch of my Market icons without any problem. No fc's or install failures.
So say for example you were to change the Market Icon for Spare Parts. I assume you did the following:
Pulled com.androidapps.spare_parts.apk from /data/app
Edited the app_icon.png file within the res/drawable folder
Uninstalled Spare Parts
Pushed com.androidapps.spare_parts.apk back to /data/app
Or did you do it differently?
Thanks again for all the help on this. Not sure exactly what is going wrong on my end.
I never uninstalled the apk. I just drug a copy of the .apk to my computer, edited the image, and then pushed it back over the original one. Im in no way any kind of expert, but it worked when I did it.
Hmm. So are you going into /data/app and pulling the com.androidapps.spare_parts.apk (for example), editing, then pushing back w/ out signing or anything? I assume you are pushing back the same file, name exactly the same and everything.
So for example you would have pulled com.androidapps.spare_parts.apk from /data/app, edited the png within the apk file, then pushed com.androidapps.spare_parts.apk back to /data/app and it worked?
No rebooting, signing or anything?
I'm using Fresh 1.1 with MCK and again, do not have SD card partitioned for apps2sd yet.
Thanks again.
Yep, that's what I did. No updating, signing, nothin. I did reboot after I was all done. And I dont mess around with that apps2sd business either. So it should be the same.

Wow that worked pretty nicely! I was trying to change the little slide bar that moves as you change screens. I kept upzipping the file and modifying it, then rezipping and trying to reinstall. 7zip lets you modify the .apk with out opening it up...glad this subject came up and you answered this!
Ok. Step by step here is what I did just now:
1. adb pull /data/app/com.androidapps.spare_parts.apk C:\Users\Chris\Desktop
2. Used 7zip to open the apk file.
3. Moved my app_icon.png file into the res/drawable folder and overwrote the current one
4. adb push C:\Users\Chris\Desktop\com.androidapps.spare_parts.apk /data/app/
5. adb shell
6. reboot
Doing this did not work. It only made the icon on my home screen for Spare Parts go away, and the app is no longer listed as being installed. I can still see the file in my /data/app/ directory, but it is not installed or showing up anywhere.
Any ideas?

Try pulling the original icon and editing it. Just make it a solid black square. Then put it back in and push to the phone. Sounds like your new icon changes the filesize enough that it needs resigned.

Sdcard2 video is deleted unexpectedly

Anyone else have this issue?
Latest vegan
Using original 16 gig micro sd from my droid.
Fat32
I loaded a video from my laptop ubuntu 10.10 into root of sd.
Test playback on ubuntu from sd.
Safely remove drive.
Power off gtab
Insert sd
Power on gtab
Video shows up and plays on gtab with doubletwist.
(video was converted to mp4 via arista transcoder galaxy tab preset)
Power off gtab
power back on
Video is gone.
Even videos in a bunch of nested folders on the sd I did not try to play (.mov vids) are gone. The folders and other non video files are still there.
Should I not be using sdcard2 at all?
Any issues with usb flash?
Thanks

place an empty file named ".nomedia" in any directory on the sdcard that you have video files. They won't be deleted
Sweet! Thanks.

.nomedia fix
I created a new folder. Nomedia onto root of sdcard2 using iFileManager.
Didn't work. Files with subfolders (videos) still missing.
In fact, this sdcard2 reports it is empty. Like all space is free minus the folders.
Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks

During the brief period of time I used vegan tab I had this same issue and was able to resolve it by making a folder called .nomedia and putting the videos in there but I was then required to manually specify to my video app what folder the videos were in.
I dont remember if I tried making the .nomedia file in the video folder or not so that might work as well but I do know for sure that any video in the .nomedia folder will not get deleted.

I don't know how to make it any clearer than that.
There are a number of ways to create an empty .nomedia file.
1. Create a new text file with some name and then rename it to .nomedia.
2. Run this command inside a Terminal Emulator window:
Code:
gTablet$ [B]touch /mnt/sdcard/SOME/DIR/.nomedia[/B]
3. Or, this one:
Code:
gTablet$ [B]> /mnt/sdcard/SOME/DIR/.nomedia[/B]
4. Or, this one using adb:
Code:
C:\> [B]adb shell touch /mnt/sdcard/SOME/DIR/.nomedia[/B]
Note: Type in only the stuff in bold.

Gallery can not find new images files?

Hello,
I rooted my TF 700 and upgraded to JB, delete loads of rubbish, now the tablet flies. However I got a problem with gallery app:
It dose not show any of the images I copied to tablet, the pictures I took from camera shows up the gallery but other images I copied do no show up.
I tried different galley apps all got the same problem, I tried media rescan app as well did not solve the problem.
Just wandering anyone got any ideas?
You help is much appreciated.
How did you copy the images, and into which folder? Do the files show up in the file manager at the expected location (/sdcard/Pictures usually)?

I copy the files into the same folder as where camera images stores, yes the files show up in file manager and I can open it.

You need to copy to your picture folder (/sdcard/Pictures).
Try rebooting the device. Android does a media scan when booting up, and it should pick up the new pictures at that point.

[Q] Can't Find Music on Note??

I have some music files I copied to the "Music" directory of my Note. The stock player won't find them. They are all MP3 files. I downloaded a trial of PowerAmp and that won't find them either. I have the card (a 64GB) formatted as FAT32. If I use root explorer I can find and play them manually. Is there a music app I can download that will open and list them normally or am I doing something wrong? Thanks!
Silly question but did you put a .nomedia file into the directory these songs reside. If there is a .nomedia file then the music players won't see anything in there no matter what, neither will any other media app, video or pictures won't be found by their respective apps until you use a file explorer to oen them manually...
You may need to go to settings in your file manager and allow to see hidden files....

Thanks for your response!
Yes I saw when searching for a solution that some apps might install such a file but it's not there. I'm rooted and use Root Explorer and made sure that hidden files are viewable. Interesting also that RockPlayer does see and play the files. Any other suggestions? I did also use CWM recovery to clear the Davlik Cache, and also cleared data from media storage in app settings and rebooted without luck. Thanks.

[Q] How To Remove a Folder/file...

I downloaded a music file (using U torrent for android) to the Internal Storage/download folder. I tried to delete it but it is grayed out and unable to do so. how can I delete that folder and it's contents? Thanks in advance.
Might the file still be "in use" by the uTorrent application? Try fully stopping the torrent file and deleting it from within the app if it has the option.
Ran into a similar problem. If the above doesn't work you will need to delete the file without booting into the OS.
Options:
1. Reboot and try to delete the folder again.
2. Custom recovery with file manager and delete from there.
3. Boot into bootloader and use adb to delete the file.
All of these options can be learned courtesy of Google.
