Has anybody made/looked into a double vertical tile?
This could be useful for live tiles. Weather comes to mind first, but Im sure other people would have other ideas for it.
you don't get the option to make a double tile. only OEMs do at present. hopefully this changes, but yea, it doesn't exist at present.
Yeah, I had thought about that it would be really cool looking. i hope Microsoft allows developers to use double tiles an also gives us an option to choose if we want somthing to be single or double (or vertical) sometime in the future. Maybe with the ability to stretch them on the fly between the 3 different was. Kinda like widgets on android with Motoblur on the Droids and in Launcher pro.

I was playing around with the HTC bookmark widget earlier, and noticed widgets can be dragged up and down. Are there any widgets available that act as a blank overlay for the homescreen, which can also scroll vertically to view more widgets and shortcuts? This can be helpful to access more on each homescreen and provided no one else knows about the vertical scroll, hiding a few "work documents" .

how long have you had your phone again?
just about everyone knows about scrollable widgets.
and no you cant make a homescreen vertically scrollable.
1. You are being a ****.
2. He didn't ask about scrollable widgets.
3. Yes its possible it would just require some heavy knowledge and coding.
I wasn't announcing that widgets could scroll, I was providing an example. Nor did I ask if it was possible to make the homescreen scroll. What I'm asking IS possible. I was only asking if it already exists.

I haven't seen anything like that and I understand what you are asking. You would need to go to the android app dev section to see if someone will take A TON of time to make a full screen vertical scrolling widget that you can place other widgets in.
Would it be impossible to look at bookmark widget's code as a basis? As for integrating shortcuts into a widget, I could probably try and contact the dev of Multi icon. That should take care of the major concerns, right?
I dont know if you could make a widget that lets you host other widgets or shortcuts. but there are 2 options that may work for you
one is the folder system, you can make folders to keep your app shortcuts in, but they will not allow you to nest widgets inside of them.
another option is to use a secondary launcher like launcher pro or ADW launcher, and when you want to access the shortcuts or widgets that are in that launcher you can open it up. then you can set one of the launchers to be the default when you hit the home button, or have it ask you each time you hit it.
just my 2 cents, but don't give up on the widget inside a widget idea, im sure a bunch of people would like to have that ability

The program/shortcut integrated in a widget is performed perfectly on the Multi icon widget. Pre-existing widgets in the widget haven't been included, but the dev has begun creating specialty widgets. I do recommend checking it out.

I've tried QuickDesk, which keeps your current launcher, but enables a popup homescreen when you double tap the home button. It's not the smoothest process by any means, and somehow makes HTC Sense pop up in your home button long press. If you know of any better attempts at this, I'd like to see how those work as opposed to this one. It may be simpler than eventually having to create a new one, right?
Actually, being able to pull up or down on the home screen to activate something like quickdesk would be pretty cool. QD kinda sucks having to double tap on it, and the response is laggy because the button is getting confused as to what it's supposed to do.
as far as I know, the only Launcher that provides vertical scrolling functionality is HTCSense. It also provides the EditText widget as a RemoteView.
**in Android world, a "widget" is any GUI object, really. While the widgets we talk about adding to a Home screen is really called an "AppWidget"**
Its all about how the Launcher handles and behaves with RemoteViews.
For a Launcher to allow one of its AppWidgets to contain and run another AppWidget, that Launcher would have to provide a huge heap of new RemoteViews and surrounding functionality...or, the AppWidget container would have to somehow import the child AppWidget App and run it internally (not possible I think!).
There's a chance that MIUI (a new Chinese Launcher) provides AppWidget-within-Folder functionality. It may then expose custom RemoteViews and API interfaces to allow AppWidgets to be developed to do similar things
i was looking at the continuum on verizon and i thought "what's with the awkward location of the soft keys between the two screens" and "why have 2 in the first place." but the idea of a ticker was nice. i also didnt think it was versatile enough. and thought if that was a spot for another 1x4 standard android widget and could scroll through several widgets that you choose it would be better but then why not do it on one screen and put it on the market.
so i had the idea of either a 1x4 widget that actually holds other widgets and/or links and scrolls through them every 5 seconds or so, you could have all your favorite widgets on one screen inside a dock.
or why not a home launcher with a with a dockbar can not only hold a 1/1 icon links/shortcuts but could also hold widgets up to 1x4. add in the ticker widget and then you would always have it on screen, not just on one home screen.
i realize a ticker wouldn't be for everyone, it could get quite annoying but i think i would like to see the option available. a dock bar that holds a widget might get some downloads i think
does anyone else have any thoughts? good idea/bad idea? anyone who can make this sort of thing happen interested? my brother could do it but he wont speak to me anymore.
i know some of the launchers out there can do a lot and this sort of thing may already be possible but take some know how. i mean i saw an lcars theme for a launcher that went against everything i know about the android gui. but i have no idea how to do that sort of thing.
Does anybody know an app that lets you place a text on your screen? I want to have each screen contain certain apps and I want to place label on top that says what category that screen is. I've found Text Widget which looks nice but it only lets me place one widget.
Zoom, by the same guys that do Tasker, will allow you to do text on a widget. They can be of different sizes and way pretty much anything you want. And, as an added benefit, you can have it do certain things (anything Tasker is capable of) whenever you tap on it. I have one, for example, that shows my battery level, day, date, and time. Tapping on different parts of it does different things.
If it is an android then use the multipicture live wallpaper and create a wallpaper for each screen.

but if he moves something on the screen, he will have to remake the wallpaper, put it on the phone and set it back...
Here's an idea I've had rattling around in my head.
Currently, most of the launchers I've seen are a certain number of screens, with a given grid. The default launcher is 5 screens, each is a 4x4 grid. Is it possible to make all of these into one continuous stream? I mean, could we make the homescreen instead one continuous 4x20 space. You would only see a 4x4 space, but could move left or right one column at a time. You could also customize the width of the space, for example, make it 4x21 or 4x18. Widgets wouldn't be limited in which blocks they occupy either, so you could have them offset from one another. You might not want to have it go up or down, as this could cause some issues if you have scrolling widgets.
I have no programming experience, so I can't make this happen. But anybody else give it a shot.
Funny, was thinking about this last week as well.
One addition though; why work with columns and rows at all? Regina launcher (IIRC) works with lines instead of rows and columns, pretty cool.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Grids (to me) are a lazy man's method of a tidy desktop. I tried Regina, quite liked it and the freedom, but I'm a lazy person and prefer grids.
I actually like the horizontal scrolling idea, that coupled with the popular blocks-based organisation using Desktop VisualizeR, I can actually imagine an elegant and beautiful sideways-scrolling home screen.
Would give my full support for testing if anybody can come up with such a launcher!
Hi
I have the paid version of ADW Ex 1.3.3.1 and after being inspired by the many homescreens of Transformer, tried mine and has problems:
1) I know there is a hidden dock but I cannot get it to show even after ticking show hidden dock in settings.
2) When I try to keep a widge to the sides of screen it goes to the next screen and does not stay there. I have seen screenshots of users with icons on either sides. I did change the rows and columns under UI to 10 and 10. Still no joy.
Any help appreciated.
This is how you get the icons on the edge of the screen
Heres everyones chance for payback
I had ADW setup last night and at some point I was unable to use the left and right 1/2" of the screen for widget placement. I can with Launcher pro but it doesnt have some features I want. (ADW has a widget for selecting a specific homescreen).
What setting did I change to lose the real estate on the left and right part of the screen. This is in landscape BTW, I don't use portrait much.
I have searched so much that I now hate the 60 seconds between searches rule
Please help this dumbass frog in his quest and I will take all smartass comments with humor. Thank you in advance.
I quit looking and found the answer. Thanks SwiftLegend

for the hidden dock, I know its in the UI settings somewhere.
Also you can long press anywhere on the screens and select launcher actions, and then put an icon on the screen that would make the hidden dock, appear and reappear.....their is also a tutorial on how to make the icon transparent.
go to the themes and apps section of the forum and read page 1 of the hubs layout thread on the front page
Thank'd.
Would you know how to make the Dock appear on either sides instead of one below? Does not make much sense to get an icon column for loosing a dock.

Go into ADW settings and set one of the swipe actions to reveal the hidden bar. Its the easiest way I've found

It's either one or the other. The dock takes up a whole column so you can't have both. If that is what you mean.
If you want the dock to be on the side, you have to use the main one which will then make the big gap on the left of the screen. If you really want it, try VLT Launcher (It's either VLT or VTL) You can have a dock on either side and on the top or bottom. It is built using ADW source code, so it has most, if not all the same settings/features.
Easiest way to turn on and off the secondary dockbar ("hidden dock") you can either use a icon: Long press on Home Screen > Launcher Actions > Hide/Show Dockbar or set it to a swipe action: ADWSettings > General Behavior > Gestures. Mine is set to a swipe down to open/close, swipe up to open/close app drawer.
Also, like previously said, check out the Hub's layout thread. There's a lot of info on manipulating ADW in there, some of it from yours truly . Just gotta look a little.
Thank'd all of you.
I do not know which settings but trying all that was posted here has made the sides usable and Dock still available.
I did try VTL and it was good ,but was too laggy and looked too big(reslution issue?).Anyways happy with ADW. launcher Pro also seems to be good.
