Sorry if I am duplicating a previous post as I was not able to find a thread with this information.
I'm in Miami, FL (specifically in downtown and Dadeland area) and have not found the right modem yet. Bandwidth speeds, GPS accuracy, and battery efficiency are the most important for me (and just about everyone else ).
After reluctantly turning off HSDPA (to conserve battery since it keeps swapping from 3G to H) my current combo seems to be OKAY but not great. I would like to hear from others in the Miami area. I suspect that different kernel/modem combos will have better results than what I am using. Any suggestions? I am curious to know what is working out for others here. I have tried several modems but currently I'm using the Phoenix 3.0 ROM with Speedmod Kernel and JL2 modem. This has given me the most efficient battery life to date but bandwidth is around 1.7kbps/500kbps and GPS accuracy suffered greatly with this modem.
Posting positive results and what kernel/modem used related to major cities or even by state could be useful to all users. Obviously results from different ROMS will vary but If nothing else it would be a point in the right direction for those of us who do not get good results with our current modems.

You can try to use the band toggle app in my sig. HSPA is 850Mhz and 1900 Mhz. You can choose whatever band/bands you only want to use.
Thanks! I've been manually doing it since I did not know about the app
Now about modems

The app is just a quicker way to access the band select secret menu. Just so you know... it doesn't persist through reboots. And I'm not sure if this will help or not, considering those same bands are for 3g as well as H. But maybe worth a try.

good idea for thread.
Everyone seems to get differing results with their captivate/modem combo's and i have wondered whether it is more related to Geography or the Specific Build Models or combination of both. My suggestion is to try JK4, JK3, ZNKP1, and TLJL3. I had read great things about JL2 having accurate tracking but for me it was virtually useless (good lock times horrible tracking....it even missed my first turn and went a block and a half before realizing i had turned)
With this in mind i think it make since in addition to geographic region to also post the build # of your phone.
Best Modem's for Fast Locks & Tracking for me are:
1. JK4
2. ZNKP1 & JK3
3. TLJL3 (although this is a big dropoff in tracking performance from #1 & #2)
Location: Central Illinois
Build: 1007
Rom: Firefly 1.5
Kernel: Speedmod O
Modem: JK4 (excellent tracking with this modem/kernal/rom combo)
Location: Surrey, BC, Canada
Rom: Continuum V1.2
Kernel: Paragon RC2.0
Modem: ZNKP1 (Best Speed, Battery Life & Signal)
My second choice for modems is JK3 but battery lift is not as good as ZNKP1. JK4 was great except I found 3g/H would sometimes lose connectivity.

South Florida here as well... JK4 has been good to me but I am also testing JL3 now since some say it is better on battery. Since I just loaded it, I cannot say if it is better than JK4 yet or if it offers better battery. Will know tomorrow with my overnight standby test. If I see no improvement, I will probably go back to JK4.
Location: San Francisco, California
Rom: JPY Roms (Darky, Doc, Serendipity)
Kernel: Speedmod, Paragon, Glitterball, xcalibur
Modem: JL3 > JK4 in all cases. For me, GPS was the only issue I worried about since I drive a lot and tend to get lost even more, but JL3 has great connectivity and battery life also.
My only qualm with JL3 is that when I turn on the phone while it is plugged in, the SIM card doesn't get read, but that's a really minor thing for me. I've simply developed the habit of unplugging the charger before I reboot the phone. I haven't yet tested the Chinese modem.

I drive around alot including the miami area for work. Had good results with jl2 better with jl3 jk4 had great gps but lacked in phone reception for me. Right now i am running kp1 modem and testing battery had horrible battery today 4 hrs with minimal use using fb2 kernel. Switched to speedmod and testing it out. Didnt have good gpa with fb2 will test it with speedmod and update later.
I threw my phone into the flames and it was reborn
I have a feeling the modems are gonna be like the radios from back in my WM days. Your results for different modems will depend on where you are in the world and less on what rom, firmware you are using. I am gonna move this to the general section as this is not really about development.

so I rooted my Inspire 4G, and downloaded the 1.84 radio rooted/SL from this forum. Then I installed CM7, 7.0.3. to be exact, and I noticed the speed tests were always slower. Last week, before I unrooted/restored to stock original, I had it rooted but before I got 1.84. I thought this time, after putting 1.84, CM7 should be as fast or faster. But it was not. I usually got good <200 pings, but download speeds of 2-2.9, uploads a little higher than one. With 1.84 rooted/SL, I've often gotten speeds higher than 7 to download, as on the last 4 tests, and have had quite a few download speeds higher than 10 with 1.84 stock rooted/SL. I'm in NYC. With CM7 today, I tried editing the APN settings per what I saw here on XDA, to no avail.
Can someone tell me why? What custom ROMS can I get which will be leaner AND faster than stock? I love CyanogenMod's layouts, themes, customization, but cannot stand the slower speeds. Could it be that custom ROMs are optimized for Desire HDs and not Inspire 4G's? I already tried CoreDroid, and not only was it slow, but had terrible battery life. I also want a ROM that has good maps, gps, wi-fi, as few bugs as possible. I really do want gingerbread, but it should be fast, as the Gingerbread man was. Another issue with CM7 was that sometimes, it would lose all data capabilities, the blue H and bars would go white, and when I'd try speed test, it would go to Houston TX for a server.
can I please get a response? I wanna use a custom rom, but I wanna know how to get a custom ROM which makes my phone faster.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest you try some of the radios in the radio thread. With CoreDroid 6.8, I had good luck with radio Radio_12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2 along with its RIL, although I can also say that radio Radio_12.39.60.19_26.06.04.06_M_release and its RIL seemed to give better battery life.
From what I've read, radio performance can be specific to geographic location. So what works good for me in AL may not work as well for you in NY.

BTW, i'm in Houston, data speeds suck here w/ all modems.
KJ2 gave me the best speeds at my home, but bad signal and speeds at school.
KJ4 gives me good speeds at home and great signal, but it also gives amazing speeds at school and amazing signal.
So KJ4 is the best for me, since I don't need 4G at home, I have wifi.

UCKJ4 is also the best for me. Only problem is the 160 character text limit when it fails. I have to send a lot of long texts so it's hard for me to use that, haha. I went back to UCKI3 and it's not too bad, but the latest is definitely the best.

Best battery - Good signal - Good speeds - KI3
Average battery - Good signal - Best speeds - KK1
Great speeds for me on kk2 best so far going to use it for a few days to see about the battery.
i wish i could update the poll to include the newer modems...
KK1
KK2 using Richmond, VA server works best in the VA area but has issues with text character amount. Best well rounded modem in the area is KK1
I haven't done any speed tests, but judging on signal strength and battery life alone:
Running Galnet MIUI, KK3 gives me the best signal and battery life.
Running Samsung ROM's, KI3 gives me the most consistent signal.
I always want higher data speeds & better reception, so changing my modem seems like the next thing for me to do.
I've been looking around various forums & seen a pretty broad range of results depending on modem used & location/network.
Most of them don't seem any better than mine, if even close at all?
I have a reception of -1 bar to full bars most of the time.
The odd place in the city (Winnipeg, MB) my reception can drop pretty low (1 bar) but I've never seen it lose 4G.
Speed Test app results (4G full bars)
Down: 7343kbps
Up: 1120kbps

Is there any modem that you guys would recommend for a Rogers Infuse that I will notice decent performance increases, preferably bug free?

7 mbps down is pretty darn good... on the high end of what I get here in NB. One time I got 10, and was like omgwtfbbq. I believe it was on J4. Anyway, just try them all, you might notice different results. Also, there aren't any bugs on any of the modem leaks, so you don't need to worry about that.

Yes a noob to Android and yes, first post
Before my quick question I have to say thank you to M0D1441 for this ROM (and his contributors - it is absolutely amazing, and by far - the best ROM out there for Galaxy Skyrocket I727 users.
Flashed this Rom from stock I727R Rom last week and have had huge success with it and cannot wait for the update to this Beta 7.
However, since flashing the UCLD2 radio I notice significant slower speeds compared to whatever the stock was using. I have followed all procedures correctly, am able to auto switchover from LTE and HSPA+ and have had no issues with this ROM that anyone else has reported other than significantly slower speeds.
Max down on HSPA+ has been between 5 - 7 Mbs with upload at 0.2-0.56 Mbs and LTE down: 16-22Mbs (which is not bad) but have full bars and 2.78 up.
Even my home WiFi (802.11n) connection suffers from this new radio with dowload @ 18Mbs and up @ 0.56 compared to stock ROM speeds at least 38.6Mbs down and 3.7Mbs up.
My speeds with all connections with stock radio were, at bare minimum, double to what I am getting now.
I have flashed the UCLD2 radio a few times following procedures and still no change in speeds. I have read nightmare stories about switching back to older radios on the I727R and am nervous to do so.
Wondering if other Rogers users have experienced the same issue and if need be, what radio change to?
What was stock radio on Rogers I727R and is it compatible with the NexusMod ICS Zero Beta 7?
Is/can this UCLD2 radio be not fully compatible for Rogers customers in Canada?
Thanks a million in advance!
I'm on att and I haven't noticed a drop in speed I know its not Rodgers but I can't imagine its all that different

Keep in mind the modem is for AT&T, so not surprised you're seeing slower speeds on Rogers. Also, the modem, a.k.a. Radio has no affect on Wifi as Wifi is part of the kernel.
Bottom line, your experience is more than likely going to be a "best effort" at best; think of it like trying to install a Ford part on your Chevy car.

Thanks for your input. Yes, I figured this radio may only indeed be for AT&T but it is such a great modem/radio. My battery life is far superior with the UCDL2 as opposed to the stock KJ7 radio. Guess it's a toss between speed or bat life
As for WiFi, I realize this radio should have no effect on it but it is definitely slower with the UCLD2 modem. Strange - I will have to try and get this under the microscope and see how/if/what is effecting it.
This may be a dumb question (sorry) but can you use the stock radio with any ICS ROM or is that just going to cause nightmare issues?

Wow. Really? That's what I figured would happen for me but... not happening. The only thing I did not do was install busybox but I can't imagine that would make any difference to the radio.
I just want to make sure i am not damaging my phone by using this modem. maybe it just needs some settling time but it has been almost a week.

I totally hear ya. However, I have noticed something interesting which completely makes sense. After having the modem settle for a week now I have noticed that my daytime speeds on HSPA+ are slower compared to daytime. Now, Daytime on average is 9.51Mbs down and 1.27Mbs up (which is actually not bad) compared to night (after 9pm) getting an average 13.72Mbs down and 2.73Mbs up. I can't really complain as this seems the norm for GTA on Rogers.
LTE daytime speeds have now been an average of 23.7Mbs down and 3.78Mbs up compared to night time speeds of 31.2Mps down and 5.71up. And, this is on the outskirts of LTE in the East end!
However, my Wi-Fi speeds still suffer. My LTE speeds are far exceeding anything I get through my 802.11n router which maybe something in the Kernel which I will check out.
So really, I can no longer complain Guess it just took some time to settle in the device.
As for the Rogers ICS, according to this article: http://www.androidcentral.com/samsung-reveals-us-ice-cream-sandwich-update-list , " The big picture is that if you've got a Galaxy Tab or Galaxy S II-class phone, chances are you're in line for an ICS update later in the year."
Ouch! Yet no announcement has been officially been made for North America. And, don't forget Rogers will need to test and ram it full of their bloatware before we see it!

Hi all,
Having updated two over to the new baseband (June 2011 to March 2012) and sticking with stock on one while using cm7 on the other, my experience has been as follows:
* battery life is the same. Cm7 much better than stock but then it's cm7. I went from Weapon to stock 2.3.4 and did not see a noticeable difference.
* GPS fix is a function of well written GPS.conf. I see a slight improvement in lock from cold start but nothing outside of normal variance.
So what was the purpose of the new baseband? To me it is now appearing to be just a date change in a field . (Obviously there are differences otherwise call audio would work without any changes).
Thoughts? Note that I had to subtract wishful thinking to reach my conclusions.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app
Huge signal strength boost on my end. My dorm I used to get no signal. Now I get two to three.
Sent from my paranoid Nexus 7.
At least for me, the GPS was massively improved. GPS fix is not purely a function of well written GPS.conf.
On stock 21e/2.3.3 - my GPS barely worked. It was intermittently better on cm7.x - but it was still a POS.. rather .. GPOS (global piece of.. )
On stock 21y/2.3.4 - my gps was massively better, but over all it was like a whole new phone.
On 21y baseband + CM7.2 it works really well, and WIPER/A-GPS works as long as I have data connection.

There are also supposed to be battery life improvements - but this only affected Stock Rom, CM7 was not noticeably affected.
Furthermore, I find that the newer SIM.. TM9177 works .. whereas with 21e.. only the TM9073 SIM worked..
I have also found that my HSPA+ connections are slower - but more reliable.. e.g. now I get a solid 5 mbps down, between 1 and 2 mbps up - with 21e - I occasionally has 10 mbps down - but it was very inconsistent - it would connect/drop all the time - and not necessarily a function of signal strength (e.g. standing in one place the signal would vary a lot) . 21y just plain works better.
One other change - I used to be able to use Faux123 kernels on CM7, but now I can only use Stock CM7 or Trinity - the Faux123 drain battery among other problems. No idea.. it isn't a bad flash, but my phone went from tolerating Faux123 to absolutely refusing to use his kernels.
That being said, it is widely reported (without citations!) that there was poor quality control on the LG manufacturing of G2x.. so the phones apparently vary quite a bit as to what does/doesn't work. I would say my phone never ran 'right' on 21e.. but it feels 'right' on 21y.
I wish I could use the new baseband, I get less disconnects with it.
However I can't live without bluetooth calling, and cm 7.2 for some ??!?!?!? reason still has not fixed the bluetooth bug.
