[Q] What is a stable froyo from for an at&t user? - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Last night I used Rom Manager to try to install the Cognition froyo Rom. Following the instruction to the letter I soft bricked my phone and thank goodness for odin I got back to stock.
I am looking for a simple way and proper rom for my samsung captivate that will get me upgrade to Froyo but not soft brick my phone in the process.

Cognition is a port off of the official update of 2.2 from Rodgers. That's as close to official that you can get. Either that or the new Firefly rom by Adam Holden. Personally, I'm running Serendipity 3.5.2 and it's pretty flawless.

[Q] Could Someone Give Me A Simple How-To?

Okay so here's the deal. I had a new Captivate and upgraded to Cognition 2.1.4. I now see that Cognition 2.2 Beta is out with Froyo. Whats the easiest way to go along with the upgrade? Could someone type me a quick "How-To"?
I searched on the Cog FAQ Site, as well as some threads here on XDA, but I'm still unsure of the whole ordeal... I just don't want to fudge anything up.
Firmware Version: 2.1 -update1
Baseband Version: I897UCJH7
Kernel Version: 2.6.29 atin(at)thor #Voodoo_lagfix_3.0_v1.9
Build Number: Cognition v2.1.4
Thanks,
Zane
How do you make it to the download links and miss every instruction??

Well do i need to revert back to JF6 or whatever using ODIN One-Click? Cause I figured at first since its going from Cog to Cog, all I need to do is Install From SD Card through Rom Manager, but that didn't seem to work, and only gave me an error. Then I had to nandroid back to Cog 2.1.4
rom manager does not work with our 2.2 build. easiest way is flash back to 2.1 then use rom manager to go to cog 2.2. read the full guide on his site.
I'm on 2.1. Cog 2.1.4 is for 2.1. When you say 2.1, do you mean JF6 Odin One-Click?
disable lagfix on your current cog rom then flash with rom manager.
Alrite kmerrick, i'll try that out now.
very VERY glitchy/slow/buggy at the moment. i guess i will try restarting the phone. and possibly installing OCLF
9:52PM - Much MUCH quicker after restart

I had the same issue.
Today I did a 1-click and then root/rom manager (SRE1.2) then installed 2.2b4
Today is WAY faster and most smooth compared to yesterday.

[Q] Samsung Captivate ROM/Rooting Help!

My phone originally came with 2.1 Éclair and I upgraded it with Kies Mini the official AT&T way. Then I rooted it with Shortfuse's SuperOneClick method. I was not satisfied though and I wanted to get Cognition 4.3.1 but later found out that you needed to have 2.1 to do that. So I used Odin to go back to 2.1 and then I rooted my phone again with the same method as before. Then I installed Cognition 4.3.1 with Rom Manager FREE version. When my phone booted up, it had Cognition on it but it was not rooted anymore. I still had SuperUser on it but when I opened apps that needed root like TitaniumBackup Pro, it wouldn't allow me saying I wasn't rooted. So then I tried to root my phone with SuperOneClick again and it would work. It said it was successful but it still wouldn't work. I tried to root it with the OneClick and SuperOneClick and both wouldn’t work. After countless times of failing, I tried using my phone to call someone and it wouldn't let me and would start vibrating every 1-2 seconds. So now, what I did was put it in download mode and used Odin again to go back to my original 2.1 and did a master clear with Odin and a factory reset through my phone, and cognition was gone and all I was left with was 2.1 stock firmware, non-rooted, and I was mad.
Now my question is:
Can your phone be rooted and be running Cognition 4.3.1 at the same time? Is that possible or can I just have Cognition 4.3.1 only and not rooted? Is there a possible way to have both?
If there is a way, can you please give me some step by step instructions on how I can do it?
I understand how to root my phone and install Cognition on my phone but when I installed Cognition, the root was lost. Any ideas would be appreciated please.
Samsung Captivate Cognition 4.1.3. w/ Odin 3 flash
Hey Daniel. I had the same problem & trust me they happen. I went to the tube & found a
3 part vid on cognition install with Odin flash & at first it didnt work for me. So I reflashed to
2.1 stock with Odin & followed everything to a t.....having patience watching the vids. I kinda
enjoyed it & was able to effectively flash my Samsung Captivate to Cognition 4.3.1 that is based
off of froyo 2.2 (by the way). Cog is smooth & fast & works great with home launchers!
Enter Samsung captivate rom & look for the mobile tech vid of Cognition. (older firmware used
in vid but all works the same). My phone is way faster than 2.2 stock and I grabbed a ADW from
the market to change the home launcher and all my buds want me 2 do there phones now!
Just be patient, its worth it. You will glad you were when your phone is better than new.

How do I safely downgrade from 2.3.3 -> 2.2?

I installed serendipity 7, however, it looks like I'm affected by the suspend battery drain bug: code.google.com/p/android/issue/detail?id=11126 (aka 'Android OS' process uses high percentage of battery)
So back to 2.2 it is for me .. either cognition or serendipity 6.4. I assume I'll need to downgrade the bootloaders. Which version of Odin should I use and do I need to touch the filesystem at all?
thanks!

You can use Icezers safe method to go back to stock (search). This will let you keep the gb boot loaders and you can use the latest cog or serendipity 6.4, no problems. Or odin one click back to stock, but you lose the gb boot loaders.

I would just flash to stock ODIN then flash your 2.2 rom of choice. That's how I did it to go to gingerbread

+1
just completed process myself
So are you saying that it would be unsafe to just flash back to 6.4? Cause I have VII and I was actually thinking of downgrading before but would that be dangerous?
One general rule across most ROM threads is to flash back to stock for a cleaner install. Probably not always necessary, but recommended. Using ODIN for JF6 only takes 5-10 minutes (on my machine anyway). I'd rather do that than the alternative, spend an hour or two trying to flash the right software to get it done.
How many of these "How do I flash back from Y to X ROM?" threads do we need? There must be a couple dozen of them in here.
There are many threads that show you how to flash back to 2.2. No need for another thread.

[Q] Flashing back to stock after Gingerbread

i am selling my phone and want to flash back to stock for the new owner so they can get updates. Right now im running KK4. Can I Use odin One Click back to 2.1 then let Kies update to 2.2 with out bootloader problems? Will Odin or kies change my gingerbread bootloaders. I dont know much about rules of bootloaders. Any help would be greatly appreciated and repped.
Thanks
I highly doubt There will be updates...
Stick with kk4.
Or you could just flash a 2.2 package and skip the kies step. Bootloaders are backwards compatible. Ginger boots work with earlier versions of Android.
I want to make sure kies updates just in case AT&T releases gingerbread for the captivate. Also im having battery drain problems with kk4.
hardly anyone ever gets keis to work after custom roms, and if you want 2.2 the odin flash 2.2. why odin flash 2.1 then upgrade? dont make no sense!
and when gingerbread does get released, it will be ALL OVER THIS PLACE!!! new Odin flashes, new roms, new source, new kernels, new theads.... MINUTES AFTER RELEASE. Waaaayyyyyy before you would notice by randomly checking with keis....
xda.
not keis.
The point is to get this phone truly stock so who ever buys it can get ota or keis updates if there happen to be any in the future.

Search for Stock KB2 by Adam Outler.
I just did this when I had to replace my cappy (power button wouldn't respond half the time). I flashed back to 2.1 with the one click from DG then used kies to update to 2.2 with no problem.
I like to recommend kb2 now because a lot of refurbs and later builds came with that build. Also, trying to flash a Froyo shipped device with JF6 well cause a bootloop. So, as a blanket statement I say use KB2.

Downgrade from GB 2.3.6 back to Froyo 2.2.1

Samsung Galaxy S 4G
My phone came with Froyo 2.2.1 when I bought it. Later on I updated it to Gingerbread 2.3.6 using kies mini. After updating to 2.3.6 I tried flashing back to froyo using odin but then my phone got bricked but i fixed it. After fixing it my phone went to Gingerbread 2.3.5 then I used odin again to go to GB 2.3.6. Now I want to go back to 2.2.1 Froyo the way how my phone came like. I want to go back to froyo because the wifi is weak now that I have gingerbread. So is there any way that I can go back to Froyo 2.2.1 if i currently have gingerbread 2.3.6? If its possible can please someone post a easy tutorial to do because I would like to go back.
Thanks
The WiFi issue is a placebo effect t. It has been proven Samsung used some witchcraft to make it appear stronger. I still connect to my routers for the same range I just don't see them if they are just out of range. The WiFi radio on the his device is not the greatest.

Does this still mean i have good connection but my wifi bar signal just shows the wifi is weak or what?
Yes
Is there anyway i can go back to froyo 2.2.1 if im on gingerbread 2.3.6 woild i be able to do it? is there a tutorial?
Go here:
http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/
You need to register then search t959v. You wanna DL KD1. Then look for a guide to using ODIN and flash.
Ok I went on the website and Im downloading the PDA: T959VUVKD1 ## and CSC: T959VTMBKD1. Would I just need the Modem and thats it? Could i get the Froyo KD1 modem from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1480418 and put each thing in its place in ODIN and which things do I put a check next to on ODIN? Could this brick my phone? Can anyone tell me a guide how to do this?
Can he just Keis back to Froyo, or has it been so long that anyone was trying to flash Froyo that it is Gingerbread only?

I dont know what the CSC File for ODIN? So would it be okay like i said above if i put the T959VUVKD1 in PDA and kd1.tar.md5 in the modem and it will flash back my phone to froyo 2.2.1 if im on gingerbread 2.3.6? If im doing it on ODIN to i click re-partition?
Please someone help!
It's been a long time since anyone wanted to be on Froyo. As I recall, Gingerbread flashes a new bootloader, so it is likely non-trivial to go back.
The binaries for Froyo may also be hard to come by here as many were hosted in sites since shuttered by the FBI.
If you really want to go back, you should have some patience or dig through the archives here to see if you can find anything.
You might want to flash one of the recent custom builds of GB while you wait to see if you prefer them to stock. I didn't much like the stock bloat but enjoyed Valhalla Black when I was on GB. FB's version is in my sig. There are a couple other versions of GB that have been more recently updated as well.
