So yeah, I spend the whole day searching for a better phonepad keyboard. But everything that pops out is for qwerty. Texting is a major communication tool in our country and yeah, english is not the norm so I can't use Swype even though I'm dying too use it. So a better phonepad keyboard is the solution.
I wanna change it since the Optimus 1 keyboard is too cramped for me, I'm looking for one with bigger keys.
Thanks in advance!!
What exactly are you looking for? A number pad style keyboard? Blackberry style keyboard (2 letters per key)? Or just a better QWERTY?
I'm not sure but I think the HTC_IME keyboard allows various styles to choose from (all of the above 3 I mentioned). There is also Swype which eliminates the need for large keys (because you don't press the keys, you use motion gestures).
Me, I personally love the stock Android keyboard. It seems pretty good at knowing what I'm pounding out.
A number pad keyboard. The ones that you see from older phones
Search for the IME mod keyboard. It's got a phone keypad style keyboard.

WOW!!!!!! It works! Thank you so much~!!! This is exactly what I'm looking for! You can even edit the smileys! Perfect! Thanks!
Oh no. Wait, I had a bit of a problem.
I don't know what is the setting called but I'm pretty sure it's present in tis app.
When I use the phonepad keyboard, for example I press "2" so the 1st letter that will come out is "A" I noticed that the time that "A" is highlighted is quite long compared to the native android keyboard, thus slowing my typing down. It does not only affect the phonepad keyboard but also the compact qwerty. How do I edit this setting? Thanks!!
Please I really need help!
Sorry, you cannot edit that setting.
Try instead Better keyboard. It also has a keypad-like one.

Hi,
Just got my HTC HD 2. And i taken liking in original HTC HD 2 keyboard. Mainly because of inbuild vibration feedback. But there is that one annoying thing. And thats emoticons. I would love to write "=*" or "=)" faster. Now i have to go to characters, get to the second screen for "=" and return for "*". So, is there a way to configure keyboard layout to have this emoticon typed when i hold choosen key?
Ofc i could get another keyboard thats supports easy remaping with touchresponse enabler and set it to vibrate only at keyboard and set my new keyboard as default with another program. But thats not so effective.
TL;DR: Any idea where to edit default keyboard layout?
Edit: Now that i think about it, is there a setting to make first letter in a sentence Capitalized?
Is there no way? Then someone know keyboard which looks like original an is editable? Thanks in advance
I have no idea if you can edit the keyboard, but you should check out FingerKeyboard (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=487677) its good looking, really accurate and has most of the standard emoticons on the regular layout.
Hi!
This keyboad can not to set disable T9 also!
Well I dont use T9 so I dont mind. And yes, Fingerkeyboard is nice one i tryed it already. But still couldnt edit to my favorite smileys. If I recall correctly, there was FingerKeyboard with indepth settings, but this 2.1 only has basic stuff. Gonna look at it again.
Still its kinda lame to have to use 3 programs to have default keyboard with emoticons xD
In my opinion, FKB is the worst replacement keyboard. The default keyboard would be perfect, if someone managed to remove the arrows so that you could have a bit bigger keys, and a row for numbers.
I applaud the dev for his time and blood, though.
Again, this is MY opinion. Agree or disagree, I don't really give a damn. That would be YOUR opinion.

I'm not sure about the FKB with HD2, as I will be only getting the HD2 next week! But with my experience of FKB with Touch HD, I completely disagree with you. FKB is the best ever keyboard app to me, it is a must for me for many reasons.
And to the poster, I'm really glad of you posting up a thread with a proper title with [REQ] suggesting what your post is about! If everyone follows this basic rule, how much better and enjoyable browsing the forum for all of us!
Well I am now testing REAL 2.1 version (I downloaded bad link and got 2.0 =/ that was silly of me) Now if i get nice theme which looks like standart then its all nice (Vibration seems to be implemented which is great).
And I totaly agree with precsmo. If people really did follow rules, it would be totaly awesome for others. And posting [REQ] before request was obvious after reading this forum for about 30s. Dunno why others dont do it this way, its better for everybody.
I played with FKB a bit and found out it to be sorta buggy with HTC HD 2 and not so good as default keyboard is =/ what a shame that HTC doesnt care about smileys =/

Have you tried "Swype"? It's an awesome keyboard..... try it - it should speed up your typing a lot

Find a cab in sense tweak thread, as I remember. There is a cab for currency keyboard or so called, then u can have option to choose that £ symbol when holding $
Sorry for asking in this thread, but is it possible to get a swedish layout on the htc keyboard? always have to long-press a for å and ä, and long-press o for ö... quite anoying. and i really dont want to replace the standard keyboard on my new hd2.
thanks in advance.

should be possible and not that complicated,
for info on what and how check this thread, some additional info can be also found in threads on lithuanian and bulgarians keyboards
So I found this out by accident and wanted to share. I don't know whether this was a feature on 2.1 as I've always used HTC_IME but here goes.
On the main keyboard drag your thumb up from the letters to above the preview bar and a whole row of letters and punctuation appears under your thumb. You don't have to hit the ?123 button anymore as a quick swipe up above the keyboard accomplishes the same thing.
This by no means gives me enough reason to move away from the HTC_IME but it's kinda neat.
I heart Froyo.

You can do that on HTC_IME also. I'm in CM 5.0.7 test3 and works perfectly.
How? Where in HTC_IME can you get two additional rows?
HTC IME already lets you long press letters to get additional keys, I consider this far better because I can see them already and just have to press for a short while (customizable length in the HTC IME mod)
Awesome! Didn't know about that. Thanks

Oh nice. Never tried that before so I wouldn't know if it's new to froyo or not.
However, I used to closed the keyboard by swiping down, and I find it extremely difficult to do in FroYo, I don't know what's wrong :-/

I'm not saying HTC_IME is worse. In fact I very much like it. The only feature of stock keyboard I like is the way you change languages if you have selected multiple dictionaries.
That's awesome ! FroYo really made Touch Input usable for me.
Thanks a lot for the tip.
Also did you all notice the tab key when inputting fields. Saves a lot of time.
it's a neat feature, but i don't think it's any faster than long pressing a key. overall i still think google should make HTC_IME standard
Also on smart and better kb
Cool, thanks. I had never noticed that. Kind of like all the cool features there are on Swype that I just found accidentally.
I'm really happy with this latest version of the stock Android keyboard - it has multitouch! I was wondering why typing was suddenly way more accurate. The punctuation input is also a clever idea.

What? Where did you get that keyboard from?
Cool, I didn't know this.
I also like in Froyo (wasn't there before), after you hit the space bar after a word, punctuation shows up where the suggested words would be.
The stock keyboard has had multitouch since 2.1, it's not true multitouch like the iPhone but you can press two keys and it'll pick them both up. It's only when they're close together that it might mess up because it could think you're sliding but that's just the crappy touch screen. I really wish HTC didn't cheap out with the touch screen..
hi all, i wish use samsung keyboard on N1, it work, but i don't know why he is very small (see capture in attachment), if a dev can help me, or resize the keyboard that's would be great

That keyboard looks AWFUL, use HTC_IME mod by jonasl, it's in this very forum.
First its a azerty keyboatd letters arent wrong. They use it in germany and maybe other places to (and france ).

The jonasl mod allows you to set a gesture to switch between keyboards. I use right swipe for that, so with a flick I can go from qwerty to compact qwerty to T9 and back. Very convenient

If the keyboard functions correctly with the N1, it shouldn't be that much work to compare the image sizes between the original and the one you want to use. Resize the images to the correct sizing and edit up any that need it, insert them back into the apk and re-sign.

In continuing The Droid Demos round-up of Android keyboards, today I bring you Smart Keyboard Pro. After posting about SwiftKey, I received a suggestion from a reader to try out Smart Keyboard Pro and I have to say, its one of the best Android keyboards I've used. While not so much focused on text prediction, Smart Keyboard Pro has GREAT spell correction. You'll have to go for the Pro version(paid) to get the full options, but its definitely worth it. With common mistakes correction, spell correction, prediction, and user learning(it tries to learn how you type), Smart Keyboard Pro is certainly a welcome replacement for the stock Android keyboard.

+1 on this. I've used SKBP for a while and I have yet to find a new keyboard that I like better. Plus it has multitouch
Everything looked great about the keyboard and settings until you tried to demo its usage.. haha. Anyway, I might give this a try to see if it's as good as the Sense keyboard in speed and spelling correction/text prediction. The extra settings such as long-press time should be very useful.

Wow haha completely forgot to cut that out I'll edit that. I was sitting really awkwardly and I have that problem with every keyboard haha
Keyboard looks good. I enjoyed swiftkey but the skin was HORRIBLE. These are much better, I am enjoying the android stock look and the multitouch. Also the ability to edit the amount of time for a long press is really great. Wish I could ditch the microphone key for a comma. I also kind of miss the stock way to get to the numbers, sliding above the keyboard... I will live with this for a while and see
I'm using Smart Keyboard Pro and find it to be the best.
One key feature for me is the gestures:
I have one set to voice search, one to arrows, one to delete last word, and the other to edit dictionary.

hey guys,
i'm new to the TPT and i do like it a lot so far. root went well and bloatware is down. since there are so many apps that are device specific, i was curious if there are any different soft keyboard apps that you could recommend. on the SGS2 i am using swype, so when i switch devices, i'm somehow missing that a little.
possible to install other keys and if so, anything to recommend? maybe even something for the stylus? (i figure that either my handwriting sucks, or the detection for regular writing just sucks)
sorry for beginners questions, but i couldn't find anything about it yet ..
I tried several and settled on SwiftKey Tablet X. Works best for me.
I use Thumb Keyboard. It has a split design and has numbers and arrows. It works good with this wide fellow.
I use it on my phone, but was disappointed that it didn't translate well to tablet, for me.
I use Swype and like it a lot
I use FlexT9, it does swype as well as dictation and some other nifty stuff.
Swift Key tablet version is my favorite, not to much of a fan of Swype but thats just my personal preference. its either stock android or swift key
If you like the full keyboard like I do, i recommend the Hacker's Keyboard. Not exactly sure why its called that but it uses a full QWERTY keyboard with arrow keys. Another is the Logitech Keyboard (still in beta but I havent had any issues) that has a full QWERTY that also you can swipe across the keyboard to show another keyboard that doubles as a technical keyboard or calculator.
If you like lots of buttons, is more open to customizing (button row/column height/width adjustments), either one would work great.

I prefer Thumb Keyboard too. I like that you can choose different themes for it. And for the most part, the themes they offer match a lot of flashable themes/roms for different devices.

+1 for Hacker's Keyboard. I usually use my tablet in the folio case so I have a nice hardware keyboard. However there have been plenty of times where I have had it out of the folio and been editing a document or posting on a forum and the hackers keyboard has come in extremely handy. It would be something I was willing to spend money on, but since it is free, it's an even better deal.

Hackers Keyboard ist the best, it is for free you can use 5 row style (numbers and letters) and you can download different languages for auto correctur.
In portrait mode I usually use Swype, which is great even at 10inch!
In landscape mode and for things like SSH/Terminal, I use Hacker's Keyboard, which feels almost like the real thing
Dueces beat me to it. HACKERS KEYBOARD for the closest simulation of a desktop keyboard (I've) found so far. Not only are the keys big and bold, perhaps more importantly they are scalable (as is the entire keyboard).
coydroid
SwiftKey Tablet X for me as I use SwiftKey 3 on my SGS3 and I just can't go back to anything else anymore...I might have to give this hacker's keyboard a crack though, thanks for the suggestion.
For those who like Swype, I strongly recommend the TouchPal keyboard. Its implementation of the swype input method is terrific.
