Is this possible? - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

I'm curious on if anyone has ever tried to overclock a stock ROM. I know there is apps for it in the market, and custom is faster but I updated and like the way the set up is right now. Just wish my HTC Evo was faster.

Im no dev, but my undrstanding is overclocking is done in the kernel so imo yes you just need to root install clockwork mod(rom manager) in market and find a kernel supporting overclock, I would use this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=870760
this is for captivate only misread your post firs time.
htc is more hack friendly than samsuck and I have an overclocked mytouch so its possible you just need the right kernel

Any links to evo kernels?

[Q] OC Daemon, help with stock ROM?

Hey guys, I have been reading alot of good things about the OC Daemon and want to give it a try, but I dont want to flash a new ROM. I believe someone said that it could run on the stock ROM, is this correct?
Could someone guide me through getting this up and running on the stock ROM? (TMOUS, 2.3.3)
I am S-OFF and perm rooted, but am holding out for CM7. I was using setCPU, but had issues with it. It would cause my phone to freeze several times a day, as well as request SU permission a thousand times a day. It would over/underclock fine, but even at 1.5Ghz, it was unstable despite a higher than usual voltage ( I tried many values and gave up).
I followed the guide that was written for the EVO3D and setCPU, but dont know how to do this with the OC Daemon.
I assume I just put some file on my SD card and use root explorer to open it? Then, load some kind of custom kernal to get it to overclock? Im a noob when it comes to this sort of thing, but can follow directions well.
Would it even be worth it without a custom ROM that integrates it? I dont want another setCPU ordeal.
Thanks!
Matt
The kernel needs to support it. Stock kernel does not support it.

Is there a way to use it in the way that setCPU was used? I believe the process for setCPU involved us loading some kind of custom kernal. Could this be done as well, or is this the likely reason that setCPU was having issues?
EDIT: here is what I followed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15446921
Thanks,
Matt
Just download a rom that supports daemon OC like Virtuous Sensation.
Cheers.
I know this was well covered and is an old thread but I do have another question about this. If CID is for the country code, do I still need it for my unlocked Sensation Z710e has never been connected to a carrier? I have flashed a couple of ROMs with no issue already but if the ROM says that you must superCID, is this something that I still need to do on my phone? Oh, this came with what looked like an Asian ROM but the US ROMs installed and I use it on tmousa.
Thx.

Can't get setcpu to work. Help

Right after I wipe my phone and and but it all back up I try to use setcpu to turn it up and it doesn't have the autodetect like it normally does. When I flash a kernel then it has the correct multiple choices. Can anyone tell me why I cant get setcpu to start up right unless I load a different kernel. Irritating. Thanks for you're help in advance

I don't think you can overclock the stock kernal. If you have the stock HTC kernal installed then SetCPU won't autodetect or OC even if you use custom variables from the SD card. In order for it to work properly you have to use a custom kernal.

It's spelled kernEl
But yeah, like he said. You need a custom kernel for Setcpu to work. And even if you do, it only overclocks one core because we don't have true dual core support yet
Swyped from my HTC Sensation
Thank you for setting me straight on that. I was starting to lean that way but I still wasn't sure. I'm still reading all that I can find to understand what kernels are made to run on what roms.

[Q] OC and Undervolt Kernels for EVO 3D

Hi,
I'm new to rooting and flashing roms but I was able to to install the Sick Sense vx ROM and it is working very well. From the many hours of searching and reading I've done, I understand that I need to install an undervolt kernel as well as overclock kernel.
Any recommendations for...
undervolt kernel that plays nice with Sick Sense ROM?
and OC kernel?
I'm afraid of just flashing anything and bricking my phone. I read in one of the posts that someone thought he might have bricked his phone because of an OC kernel (Silver Needle or something like that) he had installed with Sick Sense vx ROM.
Thanks in advance...
You do not have to install another kernel. The one that is built for the ROM is usually the best. And you can't install 2 kernels...it is one or the other.

I used the Configurator that came with the ROM to try to enable undervolt but it gave me this error...
"your kernel does not support this feature"
But it sounds like others are able to enable to undervolt and unfortunately I don't know how they are able to...
Help?
Thanks...

Help with overclocking - not the same as my old G2

I'm trying to understand my sensation, it's not the same as my G2 as far as overclocking goes and I'd like to understand why. I have full root and currently have Elegancia 1.4 up and running. With the G2, once I was rooted I could overclock up to 1.5 from the stock 800, but when I try to use setcpu with the sensation it only gives me an underclock option, the highest setting it lets me go to is 1.18
Am I doing something wrong, did I not do something I should have, or am I just stupid? I know benchmark scores don't mean much, but when I can get a higher quadrant score using my old G2 it makes me a little sad that I spent money on the sensation
you need to flash an overclock kernel like the one from faux123

Exactly, or you can also use Bricked Kernel by show-p 1984
Thanks for the quick answers. So if I've read right to change my kernel I just download it to the sd card and flash through recovery? I've tried to understand the differences between the kernels but I still don't really get it, what makes faux different/better/worse than bricked?
idk te differences really... i switch between them but you just boot into recovery and flash just like u would a rom
OK, since this was moved to the "question" section I'll ask a straight up question, what makes the kernels different from each other? I've searched and still didn't find any type of "kernal comparison".

[Q] I want to remove Bloatware and overclock this to 1.3

hi i just got this samsung galaxy s 4g and rooted the phone. i love how it looks stock so i wont need to flash a rom, but i would love to remove bloatware and overclock this. i keep going onto google but i find no straight answer just a bunch of sgs2 and vibrant answers. ive flashed roms before on an htc evo 4g so i got some basic knowledge, but i see i cant use cwm on this device.
i have firmware 2.3.6 please help.
Team Acid KJ6 debloater - http://teamacid.sourceforge.net/debloater/ (source)
AntonX's BML kernel - Basic with a twist 1.1.3
Afterwards install SetCPU / Voltage Control (my favorite).
I believe that antonx has also posted a lightweight KJ6, that was unthemed. Haven't flashed it myself, but that's what I understand from the OP.

Rom manager dose not work with our phone you have to get the kernel flasher from the market and do it like that. I think it's called sgs kernel flasher and it should have a duck on it

Yes, AntonX's ROM (in my signature) is stockish but heavily debloated. It rocks. In addition, you can grab his kernel (also in my sig) to OC/UV.
No need to flash a new ROM if you are rooted, just install Titanium Backup (free on the market) and use that to uninstall anything you don't want.
You can also make backups first, just in case you end up needing something later.
To overclock, you might need a new kernel (can't remember) which you can flash in CWM, which I assume you have, since you are rooted. Then get an app like Set CPU to overclock.

thanks man. i did what you said to remove bloatware. i cant run cwm on it since im running gingerbread so i guess i will use kernal manager. this phone seems like you need better experiance then when i had an evo 4g with the evo 4g you will just use cwm and you where good plus there was thousads of kernals and roms for it, but like i said i dont need a rom just to fix the little lag i have.
how long can i have it overclocked for?
