[Q] HD7 stuck in boot loop - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello to all, a friend gave me his HD7 to look at for him to see if I can get it to work but I'm stumped!
Here are the symptoms, when NOT connected to PC by USB phone consistantly reboots up to "connect to PC" screen and then shuts down and boots up again automatically and repeats untill battary is pulled. As soon as I put the battary back in starts back into boot loop. I have tried to load bootloader screen (pwr+vol dwn) and (vol up+vol dwn+pwr) to re flash and no luck, it never gets to bootloader screen and continues to loop. I then downloaded Zune software to try and restore through Zune but when I conected the phone it now stops loop process and stays on "connect to PC" screen but Zune gives me restore error "C101002E". While in this state I shut down Zune and tried load bootloader screen again and nothing I even tried using galaxy s method (vol up+vol dwn+plug in USB) and no luck. Is this a lost case or is there something I'm not trying ? Thank you all for your time and please pardon me if I have my terminology mixed up as I am new to the whole Android and WP7 Scene.

is the phone in a case? are any of the buttons being pressed whilst the phone powers up (such as the camera button)?

Sorry I forgot to mention that. No, there is not a case on it. As I was digging arround I did come accross a few posts advising about the case causing malfuction due to pressure on buttons but I do not think that is the issue. The reason I say "think" is because he did have a case on the phone when the issue started happening, is it possible that the case could have caused permenant damage ?

possibly but many people who registered the issue said that the phone worked normally after not having the case on (from memory). it's quite strange. have you tried googling the zune error code you got?

Yes I did and no results, all I was able to find was a handfull of other HD7 owners with same issue, one even stating that he went as far as even searching Microsoft for that error code and they did not even have an answer to the error code which is pretty scary. there was also the occasional few that pluged up the phone to their pc, pulled batt and popped it back in and phone booted up normally but not for me.
Do you know if the HD7 camera button is a 2 stage button that focuses on half press and takes pic on full press ? Reason I ask is because I'm not feeling a finall click when full pressing the camera button.

it is a two stage button (all windows phone 7s are). the first first you should feel just as you push it a bit, and then next is when you push it all the way down. if you don't feel it "click" (in your fingers) when you push it all the way down, it could definitely be that the camera button is jammed. if this is the case, i would suggest using the warranty and getting a replacement either from the carrier or htc.

I think we are on to something here I just had another buddy come by and bring his HD7 and it feels completely diffrent! The 2 clicks are easily identifiable on his phone but there is no second click on the problematic phone. At this point I am 95% sure that the camera button is the culprate but that 5% variable is driving me nuts so I will be doing some very carful "non warranty voiding" partial disassembly to see if can make this a 100% confirmed post and see if there is an easy solution for those that wont have a warranty exchange option in the future will be back tomorrow with update.

if you still have warranty i wouldn't risk voiding it, even if you bend the back to get the plate to move out of the way. i'm pretty sure htc can tell when a device has been tampered with (though carriers normally can't).

HTC will most deffinatly know if a device was tampered with because usually even if you bend the backplate i would think that the plastic will show signs of force on the stress point where the screws are not removed and I have still not been able to remove a lower lid with out showing signs of it being removed (minor scuffs or scratches to lower plate). With that in mind I would NOT recomend this if you are outside of your carriers exchange period if that is the case just do a warranty exchange. In our case he is still with in he 14 day exchange period with carrier where they only check for extensive exterior damage and the infamouse liquid damage which we are clear of. So regardless the results that I come up with he is going to be exchanging the phone in store with carrier, gotta love those brick and mortar return polices

here are the results I'll try to be as detailed as possible and will also try to upload some images.
The camera button was the problem and was easily resolved here is the process. I removed batt lid and sd card lid (lower lid with metal strip) grabbed my t5 driver and started started removing the all the screws ( for more details on that part do a search for "HD7 SD card upgrade") here is were it gets interesting, once I removed all the screws I pressed the camera button and it was now working properly !! I fired it up and it booted up normally with out any issues. I put all the screws back in and decided to check it 1 more time before putting both of the lids back on and the button felt wierd again I powered it back up and sure nuff it got stuck in boot loop again. Here is the solution and remember as The Gate Keeper stated none of this is worth the hassle if u are still under warranty just send it out and get a new one
Remove all screws from back plate with a t5 torx driver (I removed all but 1 screw to avoid removing warranty sticker on screw head). Once all screws are removed gently lift of rear plate, it should come off easily if any extra effort is needed revise that all screws are removed.
once back lid is removed you will notice that one of the torx screw is located right next to the camera button area this is were the problem is created some how when the back lid is screwed in that screw is causing the back plate to apply pressure to the button mecanisim area not allowing the camera button to make proper contact with the switch when fully pressed.
my solution was to put a tiny strip of 2 sided tape right by the torx screw so that when it is put back in the thick 2 sided tape will keep the necessary clearance between the back plate and the button mechanism. I will try to post pics asap!
hope this helps anyone with this issue feel free to PM me with questions.

If you have a HD7, your phone is defective. I had the exact same problem, took it back to Tmobile and got a new one and it works perfectly.
Things you will try to do and which, for a short amount of time will work:
1. Remove and re-insert SIM.
2. Hard Reset
3. Connect to PC
4. Remove from case
5. Walk into store to complain.
Trust me, phone is just broken. Return it and get another one or be in for a world of hurt. HTC HD7 owner.

I am having the exact same problem. Just received my brand new HD7 today from T-mobile. Was excited to power it on, but it never made it through the "connect to PC" screen and constantly reboots itself. There is nothing you can do on the phone, all it does is that it shows the HTC logo, then a picture indicating connect to PC, then reboots itself.
EDIT: Problem solved by sliding my fingernail into the little hole next to the camera button to unjam it. However everytime the camera button is pressed all the way down it gets jammed again.

Multiple (growing) issues, rendering phone unusable

I've had my captivate since launch, I've played around with roms a bit, but I recently (about 2 months ago) put stock 2.3 on and have left it at that. Every once in awhile my power button wouldn't work properly (instead of putting it to sleep it would just bring up the power menu). At first this happened once or twice before I could get it to just go to sleep and then eventually this week it started taking me 40-50 presses to get it to go to sleep instead of bringing up the power menu.
Now the power button does not work at all. I can turn the phone on and off by putting the battery out and in, but once the screen goes to sleep, I am SOL. Interestingly the same day it finally called it quits, about an hour before I restarted the phone (because it was starting to get really bad) and it came up as Jan 1st 2005, 12:00 a.m. I set the date manually, but it will not fix the time no matter what I do.
Because I have had the phone so long, I am assuming whatever flimsy warranty I had is long gone, and on top of that I'm currently in the UK until mid Dec at the very earliest.
Am I basically just screwed? Should I just ebay a crap phone for now? I know I have read that this is probably a hardware issue (the date thing makes me think otherwise), but I really don't have the extra cash to buy a soldering iron, nor the time to teach myself to solder again (it's been atleast 12 years or so since I've touched one, and I never had much practice with one).
Is it worth flashing back to 2.1 to see if that helps? I know there are some issues with flashing from 2.3 to 2.1, something involving changing the bootloaders back first or something?
I want to take the phone apart and try to clean the contacts as well, but I currently can't find an eyeglass screwdriver. It is unfortunate that that seems to be my best bet at the moment, unless does anyone have an ideas?
Try shooting compress air into the area around the power button. Also take the back cover off and blue out as much dust as you can. It's a long shot, but it might work.

He has a point. It almost sounds like the dust around the Iphone home button issue. It might bring it back to life or you may be in the same boat.
Good idea. But with electronics, most of the time you don't want to just blow air into it.you want to take it apart and clean it. Blowing air sometime can cause other problems(just moving the dust/dirt around)

So I took out the 6 screws on the captivate...but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get into the phone. Also the bottom two screws that are kind of under the sliding bottom, is there a trick to getting those out? Is there a video posted anywhere?
This is getting incredibly frustrating, and I need this phone to at least last me until late December when I go back to the states.
I'd try and flash back to stock just to see if that has any effect, but I'm too scared that without the power button I'd just end up getting stuck. I can't boot into recovery either, I don't know why though.
there is a "how to" for getting in the captivate, in the forumscalled "captivate tear down" from what i remember.
Thanks a lot, that sorted me out.
Unfortunately...
I cleaned everything and there has been no change.
This my current status (if anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them, as this is getting painfully annoying and my battery life is understandably awful). The phone turns on if I put the battery into it (is this normal behavior? I don't think it is, so I am a bit curious about that). The power button is completely useless, it does nothing. The volume rocker works fine. If I know I am going to be using the phone I set the screen timeout to 10 minutes (annoying that there is no 5 minute option). If I want the screen to turn on I have 3 options, listed from most practical to least:
1)Plug in the usb cable either to a power source or my computer. This works, but obviously not if I am out and about. The other end has to be plugged into something.
2)Get an sms (or mms I suppose) text (whatsapp, gchat, aim, email, etc. does not work) from someone and very quickly pull the phone from my pocket and hit the unlock code before it times out (like 3 seconds or something?)
3)Pop the battery in and out. This works at any time obviously with two huge caveats. 1) Once in awhile it resets the phones status to Jan 1st 2005, and it won't for hours or over a day reupdate the time automatically, setting it manually kind of works, but it seems to cause a lot of problems. and 2) it's really annoying waiting for it to start up again, and doing this multiple times completely kills the battery.
The fact that cleaning out the phone didn't help (and coupled with the battery thing and the resetting to Jan 1st) is making me think that this is not a hardware issue.
Anyone have any more suggestions on what to try? Again for the record I am running "stock" 2.3.
If you flash a miui/cm7 rom, i believe there is an option to use the volume buttons to wake the screen. I know it's an option on cm7, though can't remember if it's on MIUI (I'll look through my settings after this).
As for the actual flashing process, you can set up adb and use it to get into recovery if you don't have any other means to do it without the power button atm.
Edit: yep you can do it in miui. Here's a picture of it under settings > system > button settings

Not the most preferable option, but thanks I will definitely look into doing that. I'll try and get adb set up this weekend. Good suggestion, I appreciate it.

No problem. Adb is actually really easy to set up. I avoided it for so long because I thought it was a hassle. There's also a toggle you can add to the pulldown in miui/cm7 that locks the screen when you press it

A search on Google shows the power button issue is a more common one than imagined:
On the software side, it is a rogue app that is set to worng settings: Try and undo the last app you installed. e.g advanced task manager.
e.g http://www.droidforums.net/forum/te...ve-power-button-unable-get-out-standby-4.html
These forums here says it is a camera app problem......and suggests a fix:
http://www.samsunggalaxysforum.com/...sk/samsung-captivate-lock-button-not-working/
http://androidforums.com/captivate-...ton-menu-after-restoring-titanium-backup.html
But it requires you being able to get into the camera app.
IT ALSO HAPPENS ON DROID:

A widget solution:

These threads suggest it is a button problem........and that if it breaks you could be in S%^T Creek.

I want to say that it's probably just suffering from "old phone" syndrome. Especially if you haven't gotten a replacement unit.

[Q] Can't Enter Download mode or Recovery Mode

Hi!
I have a (pretty complicated) problem on my hands it seems.
I have a rooted Samsung Galaxy S III (Verizon, sch-i535), running cyanogenmod 10.1.2.
A couple days ago, I realized I wasn't able to press to power button to lock my screen.
I hadn't installed anything new, or changed any settings that was relevant recently.
It showed all the symptoms (that I have heard of) of a "stuck" power button:
Can't lock screen
Can't open sleeping phone with power button
Screen sporadically locks by itself
Power menu (the one that pops up when you hold the power button) pops up randomly and sporadically
Phone boots by itself when the battery is inserted
I figured it was a hardware issue, and I took it to a Samsung Repair center, where I was told there was nothing wrong with the button.
I returned home confused. I decided I should try flashing a newer version of cyanogenmod, where I realized I wasn't able to access either download mode or recovery mode. Let me elaborate:
When I put in my battery, it first (by itself) tries to enter recovery mode. It flashes a cyanogen booting screen for a a bit (varies in length, sometimes up to 1 second, sometimes not at all) and goes dark.
If I reinsert the battery, it repeats.
When I try to enter download mode, I can access the yellow exclamation point warning about custom OSes, where I can press volume up to start the process.
It shows the green android, says downloading, do not turn off, ODIN mode, etc, and soon crashes.
After a long time of trying to boot the phone, I found the only way to boot it is to first go through download mode, wait for it to crash, take out and reinsert the battery, and then wait (after which it will boot normally).
I've tried various apps that have a "reboot to download mode" or "reboot to recovery mode" function, but they all result in the phone crashing and staying dark.
tl;dr power button doesn't work (not hardware) so I can't access download mode or recovery mode
Edit: It seems that the power button action seems to get registered more when I move / shake the phone (not strictly the case, just seems like a pattern)
Does anyone know what's going on, or what I can do to get out of this mess?
Thanks!
Actually, I had this problem too where the phone thought the power button was being pressed even though it physically wasn't. The only difference though is that I was (and still am) using a TW rom. I ended up fixing it by just firmly holding down the power button (with a bit more pressure than normal) for a couple seconds and then letting go while the phone was on.
I'm not sure why that worked, but... it did.
Hope that helps
Like you said, all of the symptoms you are describing would be indicative of a stuck power button. How did they test the button at the repair center? I'd take it back to them. Otherwise i know mobiletechvideos.com has a fairly cheap power button repair service ($40).
A simple DIY fix you can try is to lightly smack the power button on the edge of a table, obviously not too hard or you can damage the phone/screen. I've seen people claim this has fixed a stuck power button issue. It's similar to what the poster above did. Sometimes dirt/gunk gets under the button and into the electrical contacts and this could help jar anything loose.

Yeah this worked for me for a couple months. It ended up completely stuck so this is probably not a long term solution.
Hey guys,
Thanks for the replies.
The guy at the repair center took it apart, and tried resoldering the power button (twice).
He seemed pretty convinced it was a software issue (might be because he's obligated to? not sure what their policy is on rooted phones).
Does anyone know of a software issue that might lead to something like this?
Please help me. Once when I tried to upgrade my phone it got damaged and i repaired it in a near by local shop.. I don't know what they did to my phone... now i can't upgrade my phone and i don't understand which recovery mode is in my phone. I got only four options in it.
1) reboot system now
2) apply sd card :update zip
3) wipe data factory reset.
4) wipe cache partition
Now the main option needed to upgrade "install zip from sd card" is not available.. Could someone help me to change it or atleast tell me which mode is this
This is that recovery mode

That's stock recovery. Not a custom recovery on a Samsung device. If you have a Galaxy Ace like your signature suggests, go to their forums. We can't help you here. If you do not have a Verizon Galaxy S3 (sch-i535), we can not help you.

Correction : not going into both recovery or download mode ...
Since your device hit the wall with its head, it had entered into a short term memory loss, can't really remember how to start up anything.
Well, in this case there is hardly any software stuff that's going to help you unless we find and fix what little part is damaged, which circuit got shot or broken memory. maybe they are not looking it up nicely, or don't want to use their brain to track the origin of the problem.
The device is starting, its even taking in power from the charger, so it's safe to say the initial point of contact is safe no short circuit, the contact with the power button is safe too. you said it goes into download mode but, get restarted soon enough, it even shows the boot screen, and the battery icon but get restarted again and again. why data is not getting read?
Well the answer lies here..Have you used a CD? what happens when it gets scratches? an old hard disk? spin..click cluck cluck..spin cluck cluck.
Sooo ... What should I do at this point !!!!! ?

well, since your device had physical damage, it's hard to say that it can be solved with only flashing or de-bricking.
Getting internal emmc changed could be an option, but it will need an experts hand. that would be the safest bet for getting this repaired.
but if we assume it's not damaged or corrupted, cause the device can reach to the point of splash screen and enters download mode.
then, corrupted OS and partitions can be a suspect in this case as well.
did you flashed anything on the device before? custom roms?
can you post a pic of the device when it enters into download mode?
Thanks Billysam for replying ...
Yes ,, I HAD COSTOME ROM INSTALLED AND IT WAS WORKING FINE ALSO
And downloading mode can be seen for a one or two seconds .. need video to show
All the screen works for one or two seconds only and restart .. it feels like some pressing the button to restart immediately ...

http://postimg.org/image/3q2awzikf/
We can do two things right now..
1- Try to boot in safe mode..
Hold power button, for 2 or 3 second and keep holding down button as long as you don't see the lock screen with safe mode written on it.
delete all user apps installed.
2- try this method
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63949797&postcount=4
Most of the ways that we can try here is after download mode stays as long as you can flash anything, or get into recovery, without them, these are the only 2 option I can guide you to. hope it get back on. good luck
Thanks Billysam ...
No safe mode
and
debrick didn't work
nothing happend
and also dear Billysam it goes into dowloading mode but for one second and restart immediately that was the case always just to make it clear ...
Well you've come a long way, what really is causing this now is hard to guess.
1. The device suffered physical damage,
2. You took it to many mobile repair stores, maybe something they fixed, something they broke, something else they flashed.
3. You tried almost all the ways possible related to software issues. there are none left.( if you find another let me know)
considering it just get restarted everytime you switch it on after a second or two, it can be any hardware any chip or ic related to the initial startup, just like i said if we think its emmc, it may be a faulty wire sending wrong volts, a bad resistance or capacitor, somewhere in the motherboard a blockade, or the ram cant access memory. who knows? unless you take out all the parts and see where the damage is, or just take them all out and put it back where it should be placed or replace few and keep trying and tracking all the way or just throw it again on the wall, or give it an electric shock. from simple to complex there are many ways and you can't be sure which will work.
but none more than already said. i hope this concludes our troubleshooting.
Hello Billysam,
5 points and 5 points only needed to mention .. May be you are right troubleshooting is over .. But for future consideration .. And small brainstorm ..
Point No. 1 :
Mobile repair store actually did not damage, broke or misplace and thing in my phone because they did not open it at all ... As soon as they saw the phone they its software related problem though I mentioned that the phone has an accident .. One of them actually told that if its hardware related (emmc ic) it will show the samsung logo and then restart .. even that one them told the solution is JTAG ..
Point No. 2 :
I had second S duos which I gifted after I did mix of the parts and reached to conclusion that the problem is the board which has every thing intact
piece by piece cause I separated every little part camera, led, speaker and antenna even the screen with the touch working perfectly fine the accident did not harm the screen in any way not a scratch ... And also I rooted, custom rom, stock rom with odin and custom rom again and phone was working fine with no problems till it hit the wall .. I know pretty much every thing about boot, recovery, recovery mode, fast boot and adb shell and also download mode ..
Point No. 3 :
The phone show the start screen and even download mode but as soon as it shows those it restarts .. I even made my own JIG .. whic works perfectly with other samsung phone goes immediately to download mode .. but my phone starts but nothing on the screen and restart like before ..
Point No. 4 :
Debrick !! what does it do ??? !!!! because it didn't do any thing to my phone ... it need little explaining so may be I did some wrong with the steps .. And I used 2 g.b. external sd card .. Is it compulsory to use more then 2 g.b. sd card ??!! ... ( what it had to do with starting dead phone and how ?? ) ..
Point No. 5 :
Used to and currently also using Nokia phones in their flashing program there was a mode of dead phone flashing which does not require starting phone full dead and flashes fine .. Isn't there a method like that for samsung a program or something ... yeah may its the JTAG ... I mean some thing with usb cable like fastboot or any other android commander or event trough connecting it with another phone ...
Sorry for inconvenience ... thanks alot ....

[HELP] Nexus 5's Screen Goes Blank After Boot, Even After Restore

Hey everyone,
I need a little bit of help. My Nexus is having a bit of an issue. I've looked around but can't seem to find anything similar.
The phone boots completely, shows the boot animation, shows the lockscreen with notifications. I can drag down the notification bar, turn on WiFi etc with no issue. As soon as I either unlock it or click on settings, the screen goes completely blank. Safe Mode does not seem to make any difference.
I've done a Factory Reset using Recovery mode and now after booting it shows the Language options for setup and the screen once again turn off. Pressing the power button after that gives a clicking sound but no picture. I've uploaded a video here https://gfycat.com/PoliteCommonAmmonite
Any clue what I am supposed to do?
Thanks for your help!
Variant - hammerhead D820 16GB
HW Version - rev_11
Bootloader - HHZ10x
Signing - production
Secure boot - enabled
Lock state - locked
Has no one encountered this issue before ? I'm very rusty Android-wise and haven't had much chance playing with Nexus devices.
maybe hardware issue

I have similar problem.. turn on n5 and when not moving it works fine, I can get the phone on,
The screen flickers and goes dark or touch won't work are some occurrences. Phone still works ie gets sms and etc. With research for a few weeks. Seems that it's not software related but hardware related. I am hoping it is a flex cable problem or a loose cable problem which is cheapest. If a screen replacement is needed then it's not worth the work. Just buy a new phone. I got mine secondhand at a way cheaper price. Too bad cuz I like it it's nice enough for me.

I'm fairly certain this is software related as :
1. The screen plays the turn off animation (a-la old CRT TV) when it turns off
2. The screen turns off at the same time everytime it is rebooted (and before the reset would stay on until the screen was unlocked)
3. The power button still works to reboot the phone.
Hardware or software

To make sure it is not indeed a hardware problem we should perform a sort of "hard reset" (not to be confused with button combinations to reset the devices software) . Turn off the device if it is on. Take off the back cover, remove the six silver screws holding the plate over the motherboard. Once that is off you should firstly lift the battery flex cable up gently. (see sample pic) With doing this we ensure that all power is gone and no other components will be shorted. The idea here is lifting and reconnecting the the flex cables and wires to make sure everything is really how it should be. (resetting them all) Basically tearing it down. I would just unplug the battery and then unscrew the four screws at the bottom to access the LCD flex cable underneath the speaker. Lift and re seat the LCD connector and reassemble the phone (battery being last thing re seated)
It doesn't hurt to try this method to rule out the hardware side. If you don't know how or need help PLEASE contact me first for advice so you don't end up with a broken Nexus 5.
What will Hard reset rule out?

Two things.
1. question if done this process and the problem still comes back what does that rule out? If the problem does not come back then the problem was hardware?
2. I did reseating but did not reseat one cable or maybe all of the flex able connectors and the battery was still in place. and it was not connected last, rather it was first i just took connectors on and off and did not want to mess with the black wire as it was very thin and small.
Result of #2 was that the problem went away for a while, seemed to "help" but did not fix it completely.
unlock ur bootloader ! flash a rom and install any kernel which supports colour profiles like Elementalx flash then open kerrnel manager and change the colour profile to vomer_amoled if u like it! or back to stock!
Alright so I've done so far :
Reinstalled stock from scratch (Still the same issue)
Unlocked bootloader
Installed TWRP ( I can play around in TWRP with no issue whatsoever, screen doesn't go off)
Sideloaded Pure Nexus, GApps and blu_spark91 kernel
Tried scraping all of that and going with CWM and CM, still no dice (although the sound is different!)
STILL THE SAME #!&%$ ISSUE. But now I can select the language. When I click the yellow arrow, I get that same issue where I can't turn the screen back on. The power button still plays the lock/unlock sound through the speaker.
I should also mention the power button works perfectly when using TWRP or CWM.
I have no clue what the hell I am supposed to do now..... Please help. I've never opened the phone myself.
Hello, I would like to suggest a hardware cleaning of the power button. It may or may not help, but I assume you would like to try something different to remedy the issue.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doPuXkQTGbc
The video shows how to remove the motherboard in order to clean the power button.
I had done this on another Nexus 5 that turned off randomly. I didn't want to replace the power button but cleaning it removed the problem for me.

Phone stuck in a full screen app that cannot be closed? Touchscreen only works locked

Hello! Here's a problem that I believed no one has had before. Or at least I do not know what keywords to use on my Google searches to find anything similar that has happened to anybody.
It happened when I was looking at Instagram stories, suddenly a white bar appeared in the middle of the screen with the whole screen half faded to black behind it.
Here are two screenshots that I was only able to get by connecting the phone to my PC.

The phone otherwise works normally, the touchscreen works only if the phone is locked because when I unlock it the white bar reappears and I'm not able to get to anything that's behind it.
I have pretty much tried everything:
Booting in Safe Mode does not close the bugged app (could be Instagram)
Wiping the cache does not close the app or remove the white bar
Reflashing the firmware with ODIN with the same version (phone is up to date with the last 7.0 stock rom) does not close the app, the white bar comes back as soon as it's turned back on and unlocked
Needless to say, restarting the phone does not work
The only solution I can think of would be a hard reset, and that would be fine if only I could press ALLOW when trying to backup all my data with Smart Switch, except I can't get to the ALLOW button because of the freaking white bar and therefore can't give Smart Switch permission to access my god damned phone.
If y'all have a solution I'd be forever thankful, otherwise I'll guess I'll have to hard reset without backing up anything. Which would really, really suck.
Isn't there a way to kill all apps at once? Without having to access the phone I guess lol
Okay I've made progress. When I activate the airplane mode and restart the phone it doesn't happen But when I turn the data/wifi back on, the white bar pops up.
So it's has to be a background app with internet access showing the empty white bar. At least I can back-up my data now tho, but I'm trying to figure out which app is causing this because this is freaking gamebreaking and has to be reported.
I have exactly the same issue, started yesterday morning. I tried restarting the phone a couple of times and it got rid of it for the day. But the white bar reappeared again this morning...
The bar doesn't appear if the phone starts on flight mode. I noticed that a small prompt saying "No connection, Can't download attachement" appears at the start up of the phone when in flight mode.
Can't reset the phone through the menu (needs connection to verify samsung account password which only brings back ). Had to hard reset by turning off the phone and restarting it by pressing the home + volume up + power buttons together.
So far no white bar reappeared.

Yep, had to hard reset. I backed up everything twice (smart switch and TWRP) so I lost nothing fortunately.
I gave up on trying to figure out which app was causing it though, it hasn't happened again but god damn was it annoying, whoever is responsible needs to fix it asap.
(it wasn't instagram btw)
Hi, I'm having the same problem right now and seems like we are the only one who have it so there's no other solution other than keep the phone on airplane mode... but I can't back up my data using my cable and smart switch, and I don't want to lose any of them ( My phone can work without being on airplane mode but whenever I open wifi, the white thing return...
I tried to let the phone on safe mode to check if there's any app causes this problem but with the wifi on, the white bar reappears so I guess it's not the apps' fault :-s
Any ideas guys?

I don't know why, the driver of the phone still exist on my laptop and there are folders too but when I clicked it, it's empty ( I looked through Properties ) and when I copied to another driver on my laptop, the window is frozen and closed itself I tried Develop Options to configure USB but it didn't work either...
And do you guys still have problem connecting wifi? Cause I'm still having it. I can put my phone on normal mode ( without airplane mode ) and send msg but whenever I open wifi and 4G, the white bar emerges...

Use Smart Switch to re-install the phone's drivers
I'm not having the problem anymore because I did a hard reset but I backed everything up with SS.
