[Q] Replacing Custom ROM - What happens to Apps & Data? - G Tablet General

Using the guide in the sticky thread on this forum, I installed ClockworkMod and TNT lite. I also installed several apps and configured Launcher Pro to my liking. I've run with this config for about a month now and everything is working great.
Reading this forum, it looks lo me like VEGAn is a more popular custom rom than TNT lite! I would love to try it but I hate to lose apps, data and configurations I've added! Is there a way to swap roms without losing this stuff?

Use Titanium backup. It will let you backup all of your apps, and the data that goes with them. When you restore to the new rom only restore the apps and the app data. Don't restore system data.

[Q] Total n00b question about Nand backup

Alright, so I have been testing the waters with my HTC Magic over the last several weeks. I have it unlocked and rooted, updated radio, everything has been going quite well. A few weeks back, I settled on a ROM that seemed to work best for me, and I have installed plenty of apps, widgets, and I have the customization down to a T.
But I wish to continue trying out different ROM's. Who knows, I may find something I like even more! As a fallback though, I wish to preserve all the hard work I put into my current setup. I can't find anything definitive about exactly what a Nandroid backup does, but from what I can see, it is implied that it will save all apps, settings, etc. I'm just wondering if that's correct.
So let's I'm running Android 1.6, I do a Nandroid backup, and then I wipe everything and install a compatible Froyo ROM. Would I be able to restore the backup and have everything the same as before? Or, let's say I don't like the ROM, so I wish to return to the same one I'm currently running. When I restore the backup, will it look like I never changed anything at all? Will there be lost apps or settings, or possible broken apps??
Should sound pretty straightforward, but I just want to be 100% sure before I mess around. Thank you all very much
As far as apps & settings try titanium backup, the donate version offers a 1 click back up, comes in pretty handy if you do alot of flashing, there is a free version as well but you have to manually back your stuff up one at a time, which is a pain if you have alot of stuff, but free is free & it is always nice to try before you buy... My back up pro will accomplish the samething, but I prefer titanium as I feel it has a little better options. So nand backup for your roms & titanium for apps and data and you can go nuts flashing and trying out roms with relative ease... The only issues you may run into would be compatibility of apps going from 1.6 to 2+.
Sent from my phone.
Thank you very much for the quick response.
So let me get this straight. Nand only backs up my ROM, but nothing else? I need another app to backup apps/widgets? I will check out Titanium Backup.
Worst case scenerio, I used ShootMe to take screenshots of everything important
A nand backup/restore should get everything back to how it was. Titanium backup is handy for keeping your apps, settings, etc... When switching from rom to rom.

I have a question about NANDROID
ez. I used the ROM: LeeDrOid_V1.9a on my HTC desire. I did a full backup NANDROID. now update the ROM to LeeDroid_v2.2a( this ROM is include a new kernel for overclock to 1113mhz), and do a restore my backup NANDROID.
IT seems everything comes back to V1.9a( I check in " software Information" shows software number is v1.9a, even the kernel is rollback too)
is it normal?
I want to use LeeDroid_v2.2a because it has new kernel for overclock to 1113mhz but I dont want to install all apps again. what should I do?

[Q] Updating ROM, OS, Launcher, Kernel - settings retained?

I have multiple upgrade/update questions and have searched exhaustively on this and other forums. Maybe there's no issue because in forum responses, the mechanics are never discussed. I see "just do a software upgrade", then "thanks, worked great", but not how to retain user configuration through an upgrade.
I have a Viewsonic G-Tablet (UPS300-2-2) and I have loaded CWM 0.8 and successfully flashed VEGAn-TAB GingerEdition STABLE RC1. This ROM has the beta VTL.launcher.
I've also spent several days loading music, video, wall paper, links, home-pages etc, and once I had it the way I liked it, backed up using CWM.
It all works fairly well, except I have problems with SDcard2 losing data, corrupting my partition, causing boot-loops, etc. So I avoid using the external SD slot. Should upgrades become available, I will want to try to fix this problem.
So my questions are (given all the time invested);
1) will CWM restore data as well as settings (will it restore downloaded apps, video & music stored on SDcard or SDcard2, or are these left untouched when ROM is flashed)? - answer; neither CWM nor Titanium will restore data such as downloads, books, videos, music or pictures. These will have to be copied over again. I found CWM to be a very effective backup and restore tool; all applications, settings, passwords, and vtl.launcher layouts. The advantage with Titanium is that you a) don't have to boot into APX mode, b) you can select all applications or individually to backup or restore, c) you can choose to backup just settings/data.
2) will VTL.launcher 1.6.2 retain beta launcher settings, my home page layouts (I'm required to uninstall beta VTL.launcher before installing 1.6.2)? - answer; both launchers can coexist, just flip between them by pressing home key. New launcher adds catalogs. New launcher does not use beta version settings, so home pages need to be reconfigured. To move settings from beta 1.5 to 1.6.2, I saved Launcher layout and settings (Menu-More-VTL Settings), then restored. The widgets didn't work right, but the layouts were fine, so I just reinstalled all the widgets under 1.6.2 and all is working fine. Note in this post that gojimi does not require beta uninstall before installing 1.6.2, and in fact beta cannot be uninstalled if included with ROM
3) Now that I see Android 3.0, can I update to that, or does this require a new ROM? I'm using v2.3 Android with VEGAn-TAB - answer; a new ROM will required to integrate the OS with the hardware. A ROM upgrade also appears to erase all data on SDcard, so externally stored backups are necessary. If re-flashing to root, CWM may also need to be reinstalled (see references in this thread).
4) What is a kernel (vs. a ROM)? why would I want to upgrade this? - answer; my ROM uses PERSHOOT's kernel, which has been updated since the ROM was released. Advantages are slight, but it may fix the standby problem (requiring reboot after x-min in standby), and other hardware specific enhancements.
5) If I upgrade a ROM (VEGAn-TAB RC1 to RCx for example), will I keep my old settings? - answer; no, updating a ROM (device specific Kernel + Android OS) will wipe everything on your internal SDcard. Use Titanium to selectively restore applications after re-imaging with new or updated ROM.
Thanks in advance.

I reverted back to beta as catalogs offer me little advantage vs. the work to re-setup home pages

I cant answer all your questions but I can answer some so to start a kernel is more changing the performance of your device and the rom is more for looks and feel. Now when you flash a kernel it wont change any settings or anything but a rom will change settings some wont but if you back up on clockwork I've noticed it saves everything even apps. and for the honeycomb deal well I haven't tried it yet but I'm sure they have a rom and kernel the same or similar you can flash.

[Q] Need some help installing revolver please

Ok so I have mt TF rooted, CWM with backup done, I have the revolver rom on sd so do I need to do anything special like clear caches or anything and will I lose any of my installed games or apps ? I read that on Android rev hd you have to use super wipe lite and was wondering if you have to do that with revolver.
My tablet is brand new 3.2 HC but I do have some games and stuff I dont want to lose.
Thanks for your help.
I did not clear stuff for the first time, but it is recommended - and yes, if you wipe the system you'll lose your apps, but not what's on the internal memory (/mnt/sdcard)
As davebugyi said, it is not 100% required, but strongly recommended (you could run into issues if you don't do it) if you change roms. By that I mean switch between different roms, not just update your current one. I always do it when changing roms, using the CWM clear/wipe feature is usually sufficient (unless the ROM developer says otherwise in the intall instructions).
If you want to persist apps and app data, you can try one of the backup tools such as Titanium backup. I havent tried it yet with this device though..
Titanium backup
I use titanium backup to backup apps+data then do a complete wipe. Install revelover then restore titanium backup and all your files/games etc are restored.
Thanks Guys
I will do a backup with what you recommended and wipe then install. I just hope this revolver rom is worth it. Seems like everytime you look on the forum someone post a new rom.
best rom
The revolver rom is the best. One of it's features is when you click on the history icon it gives a list of history but they have a little red x in the top corner of each. Clicking the x closes the history for that screen. Keeps yout TF clean and fast. Other roms do not have that facility.
Enjoy

Backups before Flashing

Hello fellow ROM-flashers!
What do you do too keep your setup when flashing, what do you backup? settings, data, accounts and so on.
Is there any good way to backup and keep your settings, and so on... or do you have to redo all that after you flashed a new ROM?
Perhaps its recommended to do it all over again and again? ... I use Pandoriam 5.7 and are happy with it :good:
But then again 6.0 around the corner I sure I want to have the latest update. Dont we all?
I find myself redo my phone settings more then I actual use my phone
Wouldn't it be awesome if there was a way to update it as you do with a stock ROM.. so you didnt had to wipe all when you go from 5.7 to 6.0 for example.
I guessing there are a lot of reasons why this isn't really a valid option... but would be great

..TitaniumBackup....
https://play.google.com/store/search?q=titanium+backup
in free version no batch backup / restore...
backup system+app data
wipe system / data / cache / davlik cache in cwm - flash new rom... installl TB ... restore all.... finish
This should be in the Q and A forum
But yeah, buying titanium backup is the best purchase you'll ever make if you often flash ROMs with full wipes. The batch backup/restore process is brilliant, I have it also saving my backups to dropbox so if anything happens to my phone, I have a copy there too (4G is awesome for this).
I've also found the best launcher is Nova, using Titanium Backup to backup and restore Nova, I don't even have to setup my homescreen again (4 sized widgets, 4 folders, completely customised - you can see it in the homescreen thread in the Q and A forum), even the widgets are there after a full wipe which wasn't possible with other homescreen launchers. The only thing I setup fresh each time is my work exchange account.
By the way, you mostly DON'T have to wipe between ROM versions. I always do because that's how I like to do things (and due to the above I have the process sorted), but most poeple don't..
When updating ROM's - I do a Nandroid + SMS/Call log backup + Titanium backup of all user apps +data.
I the upgrade the ROM over exissting without any data/cache wipe. If I run into FC's after updating the ROM, I either restore my Nandroid or do a clean install of the new ROM and restore apps + settings from my Titanium backup.
I use online nandroid to backup full data. Works a treat and you can use your phone while backing up!

Apps from Stock to Cyanogenmod

Hi. This is my first time installing a custom ROM, CM 12.1 in this case. I'm really liking the ROM and I would like to stay with it, but my main problem right now is that I can't restore the apps I backed up using Titanium Backup. Is there a way I can restore my user apps to this ROM?
I even have many linked apps with Link2sd and none of them showed with CM (I recreated mount script, rebooted and nothing).
I know restoring data through different ROMs can cause problems... but I would like my user apps, I don't need to restore system apps or data.
Another question is, can I use some moto apps (camera, gallery, FM radio basically) with CM? I really like them, especially the camera interface, and I don't like the camera that CM has.
Thanks for any answers! Sorry if it's a noob question, but I've managed to restore full backups in the same ROM, and I don't know why now Titanium Backup doesn't even shows my apps now.
Stock apps - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=62823450
Sadly you may just have to re download your user apps from the play store, I can't dig too far into the issue because TI is always annoying.
Thanks a lot!! Really nice to have moto camera and gallery back again. And for the apps, I made a zip with all mi apk and restored them later, but thats better than nothing!
Thanks again.
Glad ya sorted it!
