[FIX] TOR Orbot on Froyo - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hey guys,
Just stumbled upon the way to get Orbot working on Froyo.
It's not too tough, just go grab the new Firefox Mobile beta...
Once you've installed it, go to the add-ons menu and get "Proxy Mobile" from ProjectGuardian.org
Restart firefox mobile, connect to tor through orbot, run a check using firefox, and voila! It works!
-Courtesy of other ppl, not sure who, but its not on this forum thats for sure.

HTC Weather Proxy Patch - refresh weather on WAP proxies!

Hi all.. a member of the forum idsk released a patch for running the HTChome weather update feature on proxy connection like WAP ones, so I'm sure that anyone using T-Mobile Web or T-Zones will like it.
More details can be found here:

We need the help of the forum devs to develop similar solutions to other popular programs like Live messenger etc..

If you are using auto mode, you have to load PIE at least once so the weather can get the proxy settings. Load up PIE and browse something like google, then try updating your weather. (Given the fact that you have already set proxy settings in your connection settings)

No Vodafone Live/You Tube app

As most people will know; VF left out this application.
I am told this is because VF believe that business users dont like entertainment (!) and therefore wouldnt use it. Also, that WM phones dont 'do wap'. Can that be right? I am sure my old Omnia had VF Live on it.
Anyway, I think in order for me to get Sky Sports Mobile TV, I need to access it through the VF Live WAP portal.
Anyone know if this has been sorted for us on these forums? I found one vodafone live .cab but that didnt work and just mucked up my connection settings (unless I did something wrong).
This phone also doesnt have the YouTube app (it's entertainment again you see). A VGA .cab of that would be good too
Thanks

WM phone do support WAP and can be accessed from the Touch Pro on the vodafone network. However, you can not get onto the Vodafone Live Website due to the fact that their servers do not recognise the phone browser and therefore defaults to the vodafone live page that is accessed from your desktop. To my knowledge there is no work around for this.
I believe that if you change the user agent of opera or internet explorer to that of a supported mobile phone, you are then able to view the vf live wap portal pages.
Sadly, i don't know the user agent of a supported phone, but I'm sure something like a Nokia N95 would be compatible.
obviously, we would now need to find the user agent string for that device and try that.....
Apparently the N95 user agent string is...
Mozilla/5.0 (SymbianOS/9.2; U; Series60/3.1 NokiaN95/11.0.026; Profile MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1) AppleWebKit/413 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/413
I have got it working, but you have to create another connection with the following settings
Make an internet connection,
use cellular line GPRS 3G
Access Point NAME: wap.vodafone.co.uk
username: wap
Password: wap
then for this connection you need to setup a proxy.
Http: 212.183.137.12:8799
weird that vodafone does something like this!
Here in the netherlands if I go to the vodafone site they say proudly that ya can use youtube as well!
I have a ( general) TP without a simlock...no I had the youtube app pre-installed. With vodafone as my current provider it works great...

Thanks for the responses. Unfortunately you lost me at "User String".
But on a positive it looks like I can get this up and running. Could you kindly guide me through it (the Mozilla bit not the connection settings).
Do I install it as obviosuly my Touch Pro doesnt have it.
Thanks!
I just flashed my UK voda TP with the ROMeOS ROM and the youtube app works perfectly, no need to adjust any settings, (unlike T-mob)

In Opera you need to type "opera:config" into the address bar....
Then select the option that appears in the navigation window.
Scroll down to "User prefs" and select it....
Scroll down to "Custom User Agent" and type the text string above into the box
Scroll down the page and choose "Save"....
Now when you try to access live.vodafone.com using the wap settings mentioned you should be able to access the Live portal....Haven't tried watching Sky TV etc, so don't know how well that works.....

Would you post the exact link to it please? Did you have to do any CID/app unlock shennigans first!?
@ice-coffee:
I'm the same. I'm thinking of flashing my ROM. Is it possible to backup the current ROM if all goes Pete Tong?
I've never flashed a ROM, scares me a bit and want to do it!
where do I start?
Thanks!

We're at the same place. I'm carefully reading this...
http://lievenvw.wordpress.com/2008/...c-diamond-or-htc-touch-pro-with-a-custom-rom/
Hiya
You know what, having read all that, I think I'm gonna try and get the Youtube app working on the device with the VF Rom left exactly as it is.
I'm up for tweaking plenty, but I also need to rely on this as a phone and messaging device, and can't afford one crash or fail really.

I tried that. But VF removed the straeming media app as well. Also no VF Live so no mobile TV.
Thats ALOT of tweaking.
Hmm, OK. rock and hard place!
I'm going to try and will let you know if I can get it working. I really don't fancy the idea of flashing and installing 1000 tweaks/apps that my device doesn't need.

Opera and Google News

Why is it that Opera on my Fuze (Stock ROM), running 3G, doesn't open http://www.google.com/news. I get a "The requested page can not be displayed" error. Other websites open just fine. If I put the phone in WiFi mode then the website opens as normal. Why would going through 3G keep this particular page from opening? Can you guys open that page on your Fuze with 3G? If I use Opera Mini the site open as normal.

Have you checked to make sure your device is not running through the proxy? Check Settings-->connections-->connections-->Advanced--> medianet-->proxy
Make sure the box is unchecked that says "this connection uses a proxy to connect to the internet"

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, that was one of the first things I looked at. Yes, it is unchecked. The only check mark is, "This network connects to the internet". The box below that is unchecked (Proxy).

How about "remove hidden proxy" cab? It's in my sig if you don't have it.
Go into Opera and type "opera:config" into the url bar. Go to the "Proxy" section and uncheck "Use HTTP" and "Use HTTPS". That proxy wreaks havoc with HTML not meant for mobile browsers.

On my Fuze, in the Tools folder there is Disable Proxy and Restore Proxy function. I've tried both of them and still couldn't get that website to work. Are these two programs the same as the one you recommended?
What Drachen said will fix your problem. It is the AT&T proxies that are causing it not to work. Just be aware if you need to access Media Net or Cingular Video (any internal AT&T site) you will want to re-enable the HTTP and HTTPS proxies.

Interesting problem. I've tried disabling the Proxy with the Icon in my Tools folder - didn't work. I then downloaded the Cab file from "scotchua", thanks. But it still didn't work. Not sure what else to try. As a side note, when I use the Disable Proxy program Internet Explorer no longer works. I have to re-enable the Proxy in order for that to function.

Glad to help. That drove me f'ng nuts for the first two hours I had the Fuze. I use the iPhone version of Google Reader as my main RSS reader on Opera and I was just about to cancel my brand new contract and take the Fuze back to the store before I saw that proxy setting!

This Disable Proxy program disables the proxy for Pocket IE but not for Opera (which is now setup as the default browser on the Fuze). What you are probably seeing when you run the disable proxy is that PocketIE is not working as it defaults to the Media Net homepage which you can't get to if the proxy is diabled.
What you need to do is follow the instructions from Drachen to disable the proxy from Opera so you can get to the sites.

Can't access website on Opera Mobile

About 2 days ago, my HTC Fuze started having trouble accessing http://m.gizmodo.com (and any other mobile Gawker site) from Opera Mobile. I can view the normal version of Gizmodo just fine and the site will open in Internet Explorer, but when trying to access it in Opera, I get the following message:
"The site is currently unavailable; please contact the system administrator."
Any idea what could be causing this? I tried deleted all cookies, cache and history; rebooting the phone; etc., but nothing seems to have corrected the problem.
maybe it's a proxy setting thing

OK...so how do I address that? All other websites seems to be working just fine using Opera Mobile. I reported the problem on gawker's support site, but it seems to be community driven, so I'm not sure I'll get a response unless someone else had the same problem and was able to find a solution.

[Think Tank] Wifi Proxy

Hello,
There are some open issues in android that states the lack of proxy support for Wifi connections.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1273
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=9126
I know, and the majority of Android users might also know, that there is a way to "hack" the android browser to use proxy. It's done via sqlite.
But I think, as many other users, that this is no solution. The "hack" is only for the bowser, so exclude market, gapps, etc.
Now, someone from google said that:
Comment 8 by [email protected], Jul 07, 2010
There was a bug in how the browser used the http proxy - it was fixed for the Froyo release.
Other applications may still fail though - only the browser even attempts to use the http proxy. In the future we plan to move the proxy-awareness into http stacks, but it's unclear when that work can be done.

So, as you can see there are no plans whatsoever for implementing proxy support.
What I would like to start here, is some sort of list of kernel/modules/coding requirements, to start a possible development.
To anybody out there that has some know-how on this subject, please speak!
Thank you very much.
Best regards,
Anthon.

Just adding my support to this. It's a much needed feature!
Hi,
Can you teach me how to use the sqlite with android for browsing via proxy... I just want to browse atleast in my university!! Help me out!!
Hello again,
I was thinking the most quick way would be to have a local proxy client (where we would configure our proxy server settings) and redirect/forward all traffic with iptables rules to that local port.
Sort of a transparent proxy.
We have some netfilter modules included in the custom kernels that comes in most custom roms.
No, what proxy client could we use? Is there a busybox proxy client we could use?
Thanks.
Anthon.

Have you tried opera mini? That appears to get through most proxys with no configuration using "socket" method and seems to be a good solution if you just want to be able to browse the web.

Only way that I know of is to set up a transpararent proxy on a computer.
Hi
Sorry for my absence.
I've been investigating a little bit and found a great piece of software called Tor - http://www.torproject.org/docs/android.html.en.
It's a privacy and security tool for browsing the Internet. It's also a local transparent proxy!
I have tried this tool at work (we have a proxy to get out to the Internet) and I managed to get Google Email syncs and Google Talk even without configuring anything even close to a proxy!!!
So, great news! I'll do some more research, hope you all can help.
Best regards,
Anthon.
Hi again,
Yesterday I went to the tor irc channel and talked we some nice folks there
Their recommendation was to look for a solution with iptables (what I said in the beginning).
I searched a bit more and found this: http://proxychains.sourceforge.net/.
It seems to be possible to chain the entire "system" and not just an application.
Will try to build this using Android NDK. Don't know if it will work...
Any recommendations?
Best regards,
Anthon.
Thanks a lot buddy...Keep us posted about the updates...I am also trying this orbot... will post the updates!!
And sorry for asking more questions... phone needs to be rooted for using orbot??
50/50...
See the "Platform specific notes": http://www.torproject.org/docs/android.html.en
Thanks...Will give it a try..and post tomorrow!!
