Not sure why my post was moved, this is a development question and I have seen other development questions in this forum.
If this is not the right location please let me know.
I have a question and I was wondering if you guys can help me out.
I'm working on app and I need to either force downgrade to a 2g connection or restore their settings back to 3g.
How can I programatically change their data connection setting?
I would think telephonyManager would be the place but apparently not.
There are apps out there that perform actions like this. I believe Juice Defender does something where the connection is downgraded to 2g if the phone enters sleep mode. So I know its possible.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Moved to Q&A as it is a question
Ok thanks

I don't think telephone manager would be the place but rather the main phone settings. Have you looked at the source code for settings apk? It's probably getSharedPreferenceManager just like you would call for an app setting. But I'm not totally sure. Check the settings source though.

Hi, I was using APNDroid on Eclair, but it seems like does not work on Froyo anymore, I would to know if there's any other app that does the same thing, since having 3G on the whole day drains the battery a little bit more, I tried with some other apps but even when they look like turning off the connection I can still see it on the upper panel, thanks in advanced!!!
wrong forum...
this is forum for motorola defy development.
but i'll try to answer,
search "2G-3G" on market
My bad by the way, maybe this is something more related to, is it a Froyo glitch or just me? 3G icon stays on the top at the same time Wifi is??? did not happen before on Eclair, thanks!
AFAIK, there is no on/off switch but if you don't want to use 3G, there is an option to use only 2G.
Settings > Wireless & Network Settings > Mobile Networks > Select Network
@Mods: Please transfer this to the General Section where it belongs...
Thank you!

Hi all, please help.
I've got a HTC HD2 that wont stop connecting to 3g. I've tried setting it to 'my work network, but it still keeps connecting. Also tried new modem connection to 'offline', it says that already exists, but I can't select it.
It doesn't cost much, but each time it's a few 'p', once added up it can amount to £1 a day easily.
Is there another way to stop it?
Any thoughts?
Hi there,
I assume your still using winmo 6.5 by the sounds of it
Two simple ways i would recommend, download a free app found in XDA (advanced config (v3.3 i think)) as there is a setting to turn off data there.
or
More simply, go into your apn settings and remove/change the apn name; so for mine i would change "internet" and just remove the t of it.
Can use data if the settings are wrong so it never connects
Cheers.
Yes, am using wm 6.5. Thanks for the quick reply.
Where are the 'apn' settings?
I'm not very savvy when it comes to changing things.
Some one please help. First off my problem isn't really my problem. It is my co-workers issue. We both have AT&T Inspire 4G. Both are rooted. I rooted mine myself with XDA's help of course and I'm loving every min! At the momment I am running RCMix3D Runny v4.0 and it seems great. My fave so far has been CoreDroid. Anywho. The problem is on my co-workers inspire no matter what ROM he installs he cannot connect to the internet. I have looked at everything I can think of and see no reason why. If he reverts back to a rooted stock ROM it works fine. CoreDroid, ClearDroid, Leedroid, RCMix and MIUI all did the same on his phone. I have flashed all the same ROMs and had no issues. Please help if you can!!!!
WiFi or cellular data? If it's data make sure he has the right setting and access point names etc. (compare yours to his to check easily).

It is data. He can send and receive calls and SMS or MMS with no problem from either ROM. Its only internet. He trys to go to home page and it tells him it is unable. That was the first thing I did was compare his phone to mine. thank you for replying. any other ideas?

It definitely sounds like an APN issue.
Menu -> Settings -> Wireless & Network -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names -> Menu -> Add APN
Use wifi to get APN 'Tweakker' http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.tweakker
After tweaked take back up with 'APNs Backup v1.0.3e' http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.xsylus.android.APNsBU

For some reason seems to be happening 4-5 times per day when I go to use my weather channel app or my radar now app my phone doesn't have an internet connection weather I'm on WiFi or mobile network. I'm lost. But when I reboot my phone it works fine till my lcd. Display shuts off. Any help?
Could Be ROM related. Have you checked the Q/A section or Rom thread for the ROM you are using. Sorry you Need to be more specific on your individual details about your phone to help diagnose.
Stock Rom.. ATT inspire 4g. Um. Android 2. 3. 3. Sense. 2. 1.. all I know.

OK lets first start off with checking to see if its the app it self or more than that.
When you cannot connect with the weather app try a data connection with another app/browser
I've done my searching throughout this forum and can't seem to find the answer I'm looking for. I'm familiar to a minor degree in coding but not that adept to the Android yet. The phone has been rooted.I was wondering what file if any I can delete or move in the phone that will prevent the phone from accessing data through the network. My kid has the phone and seems to forget to shut the data off and I'm getting charged like crazy for the surfing she thinks is through Wi-Fi.
Thanks In Advance, apologies if this has been answered already!
You suggest looking into Onavo or 3G Watchdog.

Thank-you for your reply. What I'm looking for is a way to disable the ability of the phone to cennect to the internet through the network. My kid uses the phone and is running up my data bill. I can easily tell where it's at through the providers web site. I just want it shut off completely so I it just can't connect anymore.
TIA
So you basically want it permanently disabled? You might be able to do that my changing the APN settings, but the easiest way would probably be to call the carrier and tell them to disable all mobile data on the account.

Actually, that was the first thing I tried, their suggestion as expected was to buy a data add-on. Wasn't very helpful. I'll take a look at the APN settings as you suggest and go from there.
Thank-you for your help!!
