Sharing with Win7 and Gtab - G Tablet General

any help? I am trying to access files on a windows 7 lappy via es file explorer...it keeps on giving me a no permissions error....I've enabled sharing, all access permissions on the win7 machine and have no problem accessing via ps3/other laptops.
Thanks!
using vegan 5.1, cleymsons CIFS enabled kernel

I can access Win7 shares fine using ES File explorer, on stock TNT. I wonder if the CIFS support in your kernel might somehow be interfering?
Jim

Just switched kernel....same thing. So you jst used es and were able to open files over network no problem with no extra config on gtab or win 7?

Yes, that's correct. Both on earlier stock TNT and 3452 now. Since you can access from other machines, that eliminates stuff like firewalls, so I'm puzzled now, especially the permission error.
A couple of things:
- try set the share up for Everyone access and the ES file explorer for anonymous. I had to do that to get to XP shares.
- try using IP address instead of hostname
- your Gtab and Win7 are on same subnet?
Jim

Jim, great advice...set up for everyone and i've got it, no problems! Now to figure out how to stream mkvs
thanks for the help!

You're welcome .
For streaming, you'll need to use CIFS manager (from market) w your CIFS enabled kernel, I think.

Is it possible to stream mkv's as long as your on that kernel?

I am still using stock, so I haven't tried it myself, but I think that you need CIF Manager app from market. When you run that it requires a kernel w CIF support (which I think you already have).

streaming and screen gilch issues
Jim, this is not a stock issue in my gtablet so plz forgive me from the get-go. I have 2 issues with my gtablet that is driving me nutts. First off, I maybe watching a podcast and out of the blue 2 thing may happen. 1. ask me to clear cache and doing so I will have to exit or cancel, why? Or, I maybe viewing poscast and not move an inch and it drops to home ie., desktop. Second, as watching said poscasts it may stall, come back with broken pixels and the sound looks faster that the Reporter's lips or be totally fine . This is not only with Rachel.msnbc also happens on CNN. Any ideas??

Hi,
Are you "streaming" those podcasts from a website (e.g., CNN)? If so, that's a differerent kind of "streaming" than is being discussed in this thread, i.e., that'd be using Flash.
I *think* that what we're talking about here, in this thread, is:
- Having a file, e.g., an MKV file on a PC, and then
- Sharing the drive on a network (i.e., a Windows/SMB share),
- Then, having some kind of player app on the Gtab, being able to "play" that file from the shared drive, over the network, without having to physically copy the file to the Gtab first.
Maybe someone here can correct me if I'm confused?
So, DRSReaper, if the "Flash" streaming from a website is what you're asking about, then probably be best to start a new thread/subject on those problems.
Jim

Lol jim you are abs correct...that was a hijack for the ages

Any linux (ubuntu) users with success?

Hi again guys!
Ever since the ATT update usb connecting to the phone in ubuntu is sporadic and unreliable. I can usually get my photos off of it. Sometime I can even get into a non-root basic filesystem as well
However this isn't my main problem. I want to root the phone and install custom ROM's etc... Tried the VMware and a version of windows and installed the samsung drivers to XP but have trouble (again) with the usb and VMware.
Any help would be appreciated.
Additionally I'm pretty pissed off about the update thing. I don't care about tethering per se but that underhanded **** is why I dumped microsoft in the first place. I'll dump ATT too and spend my money elsewhere.

Linux user here. I haven't had the problems you describe. I have lately been using ES File Explorer to copy to and from a shared folder on my desktop. avoiding the USB for file transfers all together. when I do connect via USB I usually use ' adb push' and 'adb pull' to move files around.
To Root your phone there is an 'update.zip' method that I used (no computer needed)
There is also a tool called ClockworkMod Recovery that you can use to install custom rom's and create nandroid backups. (no computer needed)
And finally if you manage to screw up and can not boot, you can use Heimdall on linux like you would use Odin on Windows.
enjoy your phone...
-p
Thank-you so much!!!
I was thinking about exactly what you wrote. Why not do it the linux way? Admittedly my skills are weak.
Had a little trouble with the update.zip but went to the wiki (again) and the info on how to do it from the phone was there. BTW the wiki has improved since last week.
Rooted phone and installed Titanium Backup and Clockwork Recovery. In my excitement I deleted all the ATT bloatware before backing them up and the ROM. Oh well... Too bad.
Now I just feel great about my phone. Needs some customization but no hurry. Only thing was that TB prompted me to go to settings/applications/ and tick "unknown sources". Doesn't exist.
Thanks again! If you have anymore nuggets of info...?
linux newb here but i try
edit:
the phone can mount to a vm in dowload mode for use with odin or in kies mtp mode as long as debugging is off, otherwise it likes to mount to the host pc as a drive, i dont know a work around but you can make the phone a shared folder with the vm client so you can see the files in the vm, it'll be seen as a network location in that case.
it can mount as a drive in linux but you need to select to mount from the phone. i was having problems with it in eclair in windows and didnt try it in linux but froyo is working great. in eclair it may help to try with debugging on then you can mount from the notification bar.

To enable side loading(unknown sources). I used method 5 from this post.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=738376
and here is a link to my comments on the method later in the thread regarding some punctuation corrections.
This method uses adb from the SDK to pull the settings.db file off and edit it using sqlite3 before pushing it back on.
I believe you can edit the file directly on your phone once you have root and install a terminal app from the marketplace.
The above forum post is also in the wiki you referenced previously. basically you want to look for methods to "enable side loading"

I'm using Ubuntu and have had no problems. Rooted and removed market restrictions without a hitch.
In progress upgrading to 10.10 64bit. Will see, but right now my machine sees my phone but it won't mount. Though I haven't tried to force it.

On the phone I leave my usb settings set to ask on connection. And then chose 'mass storage' when it asks. It then mounts /sdcard as an external drive. (make sure you haven't left usb debuging on)

Oh I've tried it all-wichaways! That hasn't worked either. The card(s) are seen but no longer mount like they used to. When I choose media player I get this message on the phone: PC connection only available in idle screen. Close all running applications. I think something may be corrupted on the phone.
Before I start flashing anything I'm going to give 10.10 a go. Ubuntu specifies that 10.10 plays nice with Android. Unfortunately, I'm having trouble with my startup disks and have wasted three of them on three different downloads. Won't fully boot. Unfortunately, I've had this experience before with other releases, and it almost always was something being wrong with the .iso that was downloaded. Even tried a usb startup and same experience.
Woes. PITA!

Make sure you burn your disks at a slow speed. Like 4x. Also try downloading over a stable wired connection. Use the md5 tool to check your download and your burn. If you can figure out when it is getting corrupt you have a fighting chance.
Reporting back. Finally got 10.10 to boot from a usb flashdrive by disabling the BootParameters. I guess 10.10 is so cutting edge my 2.5 yo toshiba can't boot it easily.
Reinstalled 10.04 without a hitch and since I didn't format my /home still kept everything. But I tried connecting by usb before any updates. No worky. And not after the 256M of updates either.
It's the phone I'm sure. Not really keen on flashing the ROM yet just to fix this. Recollection is that Samsung didn't put a good effort into this part of the phone. But I think again..
Why not eschew the usb for file transfers? I've got Bluetooth and wifi right here. Who needs clunky old usb? Adhoc network?
Ideas? Wifi would be easiest since my laptop doesn't have Bluetooth.

I think I mentioned in an earlier post that I use an app called ES File Explorer (free in the market) to navagate to a shared folder on my desktop.
My (samba) shared folder has no restrictions and works well. Only issue is I have to fix ownership and permissions on things copied over to the computer from the phone. If you choose to password protect yours let me know how that works out for you.

It supports FTP for sure. I'm no security expert but I doubt its a good idea to share a samba share over the internet.
If you want remote access to you desktop there are secure methods for that. The method I would choose would depend on my desire/need for a remote connection.
If I just want to access my shared folder I would probably set up a VPN connection and then use ES FileExplorer.
To fully control the computer, use VNC or other "remote desktop" application.
Been reading up on Samba. It is the linux way lol. Also, I went and got a Bluetooth micro-adapter. Installed drivers from the repository.
Transferred some pics and music back and forth. All GUI based. Worked first time. I'm still this side of the learning curve but my base needs are met.
The Bluetooth works great but I'd like to learn a bit more about the wifi. Seems to me one should be able to move files with a VPN via the wireless adapters and no router. I just lack the knowledge and skill to do it.
But thanks for reminding me about the ES FileExplorer! As far as the permissions in Ubuntu for the shared folder I just checked the box under right-click- sharing options allow others to create and delete files from this folder. I think that works.

Using Bluetooth to push files

Hey just curious if anyone else does this but me.
Well a few days back I was too lazy to walk to my bedroom and get my USB cable off the charger. So I paired the phone w/ the BT on my PC and started pushing .zips. So now whenever I DL a new Kernel/Modem/Theme etc... I just use BT to push it to the phone and then just installing everything through CWM right out of the BT folder on the phone.
I know this is no technilogical discovery or anything, just seeing if anyone else is doing this
I use it once in a while as well, when my USB cable is far away. However i only do that with small updates (kernels), as I find BT too slow for anything else. For a few MBs it is faster then going to find my cable.
Yea, the bluetooth transfer is really convenient and I do use it for random files I want to grab off my cpu, but in your case with downloading CWM flashable files, why not just go to the website and download directly to your phone and eliminate the extra steps of pairing and transferring? Is it a download speed problem? No wifi?
I ask only because I used to use the bluetooth to transfer files, but the bigger the file, the longer the transfer time, and with my chronic case of A.D.D., I'd be waiting for it to finish transferring to my phone, then play angry birds to pass the time, then go out to smoke, and with my amazing luck and skill I'd take one step outside of my bluetooth range, interrupt the transfer process at like 96% and kick myself in the ass lol.
I just find it easier to enable wifi, navigate to the download page and get the files I need, downloaded straight to my phone so all I'd have to do is get into CWM and flash it, or open Androzip and extract the files that I need.

I have actually tried that, but for some reason when I go to these DL pages and try to start them it tells me "File Not Supported by this device" or something along those lines.
There must be a work around for this, just not sure how. And in the true fashion of laziness, I haven't really bothered to look for it
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Are you browsing the forum with the xda app or an internet browser? I ask because I believe I had a problem downloading certain files from the xda app and also had a problem trying to upload files and pics. And everytime I used the browser, whether it was opera, dolphin, stock browser, or xscope, I had no problem downloading whatsoever.
Well Just tried to do it through my stock browser on the phone to DL FB2 Kernel and Perception 10.2 just for ****s and gigs...
Still getting the same msg. Maybe it's my ROM? Running FF 1.5 (Today) w/ FB 2.03 Kernel and Themed w/ Generation X by Team Phoenix. Maybe it's my ROM?
Yea, can never rule out that it could be the rom, or you just had a bad flash... Meaning that everything appears to be running like it should, but once you start digging into the phone and start trying features that you normally don't use on a daily basis, that's where there's a bug.
So you can try and figure out if it's a file problem from the website, which I highly doubt, or you can bite the bullet, flash to stock, master clear, flash your rom of choice again and pray for the best.
Or, before you do all that funky jazz, get the dolphin browser from the market and install, navigate and try to downlaod.
Just for ****s and giggles.
Never tried bluetooth but I use the app called SwiFTP that is free from the market. Basically you can FTP to your phone from your computer over wifi.

Odd file explorer/file association problem

Hi.
So, this is what happened.
Was watching an avi movie on Rockplayer, and I paused it and turned the screen off and forgot about it till this morning when I tried to turn it on and the battery was completely dead and it was off.
I charged it up and left it.
This afternoon when I tried out the new Micro SD card, I navigated to the folder to play a video off it with ES explorer and when I clicked on the file. the screen went greyed and nothing happened.
The file was an mp4, so it should have at least launched and asked if I wanted to play in stock or rock player or whatever, but nothing.
I tried file explorer HD, IO explorer and from the gallery and it just wouldn't play and of the mp4's from internal or external memory, just the same thing... greyed out screen and nothing.
AVI's play fine from the explorers, booting straight into rockplayer and playing, but it seems that files that would normally ask me which app to use, no longer work, including docx files.
If I go to rock player, it seems to work fine, just not from the explorers. Also the stock video app won't play them either when I navigate through it to them.
Quick office pro will open docx files from within as well.
So, to try fix this I went into the app settings and force stopped and cleared cache of everything that might be even remotely related, recking my layout in the process.
Still no joy.
So, I'm guessing it has something to do with the file associations or something.
Any ideas?
If not, how I do I safely wipe to default. It is stock US wifi with 3.2.
Or is it time for me to finally give in and root and try a kernel that actually works with the Micro SD?
If so can anyone point me in the right direction, if I do pick one, it must be really stable!
I'm not particularly attached to any of the data on the Xoom, I have backed up and can get it all again.
Thanks in advance
Cheers

Try this: when the screen goes grey (at the time when you should have a dialog box popup asking which application you want to use) just rotate the Xoom, making it redraw the dialog box. It is said that once this is done, the problem won't appear again with that app.
let us know if it works.
Thanks for the quick reply.
That is great advice
Unfortunately, I was hasty to get it working and I unlocked and rooted my Xoom.
Ya, that was dumb, I know, since I now made this whole thread pointless. Although now at least other people might find your advice and be able to try it.
Sorry about that. And yes, as expected, unlocking did fix it since it wiped the data.
Thanks
Although, now that I have joined the rooting ranks, what is the Tiamat Xoom Rom 2.1 "Hammerhead" like?
Is it stable? Does it still have all the Xoom functionality? Does it work with the SD nicely?
What motivated you to go to it?
Ya, I know they have the Dev section, but it is way too much information everywhere.
Got bored again and also installed the Tiamat Xoom Rom 2.1 "Hammerhead" ROM. It's really cool. I like that the things that were supposed to be fixed by moto-goog are now fixed. Thanks devs

Great! You know you would have rooted eventually, this problem just gave you the justification.
Keep the screen rotate fix in mind...the problem you encountered seems to be from the HC3.2 update, and it may happen again.

[XOOM 2] Xoom 2 Software Frustration

Connected the Xoom 2, to a windows 7 machine.
Insists on letting installing 'Motocast' which I let it...what a complete pile of shi*.
I want to 'sync' a 700MB .avi video, over usb cable, to the device...estimated time? 30 minutes!!! I swear this complete toss of software is insisting to re-encode the entire file to some bullsh*t format of their choice. Is there an option to turn this off and transfer it natively?
Secondly, thankfully, it also installs native 'portable' device drivers, allowing Windows 7 file explorer to browse the device. Great, so I copy the same .avi file and paste it to the device...'Do you want to copy xyz.avi? Your device might not be able to play this file' I am prompted...'yes' I click. Just as it finishes copying (after about 4 minutes...much better) it bombs out, notifying me that because the device cannot play this file it is cancelling the transfer...wtf?!?!
The only interim solution i've found is renaming the extension '.avi' to something like '.proprietrysoftwarecansuckmyballs', copying it, then renaming it back to '.avi' once transfer has completed solves this.
So can anyone offer any 'clean' solutions to my file transfer woes? If theres no improvement, this device will be getting returned next week, which is a shame as the tablet is a great bit of kit, its just a shame the software blows.
Look for "Wi-Fi File Explorer" in the market.
This looks like it only transfers over wifi?
I need to transfer over usb cable.
Had this problem myself, looks like it doesn't come with the drivers. After a bit of searching, I found that the standard driver package works:
http://www.motorola.com/staticfiles...al_Drivers/MotoHelper_2.0.53_Driver_5.2.0.exe
Installed that, unplug the USB cable and put it back in - should work fine!

Hey thanks man, that worked a treat.
Just for clarification, does you still prompt you that the device may not support playback of the file, but then successfully transfer it (whereby it would previously error at the last second)?
No idea - haven't had that particular part of the issue myself - the main thing I had was the slowness...

I guess the same way will work to linux too . Xoom2 has only one partition on the disk ? that the reason not to be able to mount it as a normal usb ? If you root the device is the anyway to great a small 2 Gb for ex partition to use it for easy transfer ?
Off topic about xoom 2 ME . How good the screen and and the battery life are ?
Useless tablet ?
In fact it's worst!
As a Linux User I hoped being able to use MTP... But I tried mtpfs and mtp-tools on several distributions without any luck.
But what is worse is that FTP server applications won't work too! I tried SwiFTP, FTPServer, and some other: the servers are not reachable. It appears that not even a single ping can reach the tablet. I think Motorala have put some kind of firewall in it (maybe it has something to do with the netflix HD certification?).
For me this tablet is actually useless. If I can't find a way to transfer some files on it without using MotoCast today or tomorrow, I will bring it back to the supplier...

You probably hit it on the head about the Netflix certification. I would think about returning it, man.
a solution ?
Thanks to a French forum (frandroid, in the Xoom 2 topic... sorry I can't send links here), I tested a solution to the transfer problem: It is possible to use (on the computer) a server to share the files such as a samba server.
It works fine. But it's not as easy to browse, select, copy and paste file with explorers on the tablet than it is on computers (several windows, keyboard shortcuts such as Ctrl-c/v, and so on).
But it's now possible to exchange files with the Xoom 2ME without going through a cloud or using Windows/motoCast.

Sorry for answering so late.
The screen is quite good.
The battery life is terrible compared to my ipad2. Charging needs a lot of time and is very slow. I guess it's because of mini usb only.
Currently i'am using the device as a Kindle Fire replacement, because off the lightweight (KF is heavier and bulky). The books i usually read have more weight than the device itself.
I like it for that.
But i may not be a good adviser because my device is a prototype. It is not smooth and the speakers are terrible.
I think 8,2" is the perfect size for me. The weight is so much better than any other tablet i had.

Try using a terminal on the Xoom 2 and ping the computer you're trying to connect to, while pinging your Xoom 2 from that computer at the same time. It's like you have to force them to see each other before they can start connecting in future.
I used fileexpert to see and download files with smb shared folder on Ubuntu Linux without a problem.

[Q] Shield Controller Not Detected by PC

Hey Everyone,
I thought about posting this into the mobile kepler thread because thats where I started from. However, no one else running mobile kepler seems to have this issue.
I have a macbook pro running windows 8 in boot camp. I installed steam (beta client enabled), geforce experience and the latest beta graphics drivers. Games work great while playing on the laptop (burnout, GTA 4 and Half Life). The registry hack to skip mobile GPU check works to enable streaming to the shield. When go into shield streaming on the shield, it sees the laptop and games. I can pick Steam and it changes the resolution on the laptop and steam opens and goes into big picture mode.
Sound and video stream to the shield fine. But I can't control anything with the shield. I can control anything with the touchscreen or with the controller. If i go into settings in big picture mode (with the mouse on the computer), I can click on Controllers and it says none detected. This is the case in every game as well. Sound and video make it to the shield without issue, but I can't control anything.
I have tried restarting, reinstalling geforce experience, trying non-beta graphics drivers, etc. Nothing seems to work. I had also installed Splashtop streamer (just because I use that product on every machine I have) and I thought that might be conflicting with things. But uninstalling it did not help.
Has anyone experience this? Anything I can try to get it to work?
There are other people reporting similar issues on the GeForce forums. There are two issues that I've seen.
1. SecureBoot incompatibility - seems unlikely for you since the Mac's EFI version doesn't support it.
2. Short file name issue
The way that NVIDIA gets their input DLL loaded into every process is using a registry value that only supports short file names. If short file names are disabled for some reason, it won't be able to load the DLL and the controller won't work.
There's more info in the forum links from this post. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=44678873&postcount=40
Thanks for your reply. I did some research after posting and found those two items you mentioned. Mine Mac is booting in Legacy mode so thats not the issue. I tried the short name recommendation which was to change 8dot3name to 0 (mine was originally set at 2) and then uninstall geforce experience and drivers, delete the Nvidia folder from both program files folders and then restart and reinstall. That hasn't solved the problem. I also tried changing it back to 2 and and doing the same with no success.
Supposedly NVIDIA is testing a fix internally and it should be out this month. I'm just worried that my issue has something to do with boot camp. I have seen others with MacBook pros on here getting this to work and I don't really see what the difference is between their setup and mine that is causing this to not work.
Does windows keep logs of errors of things it couldn't load? I imagine if the registry was telling windows to start something but it couldn't find it on the disk (due to short names) it would throw an error right? (sorry, I'm mostly a mac guy so I don't know what the PC equivalent to Console.app is)

is console.app the terminal? If so on windows its cmd (hold windows key + R to open the run dialog, enter cmd, OK) but windows cmd is vastly inferior to the mac terminal in my opinion (I am a windows guy, just saying, the windows command line isnt as good as the one on UNIX like systems).
The windows event log can be opened from control panel. http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/wi...ack-down-issues-that-cause-slower-boot-times/.
Console looks to be equivalent event viewer. Thanks for the suggestion. I should be able to inspect it tonight and look for errors loading the rxinput dll file.
Wow. What an annoying issue. So the problem was that my Program Files folders don't have short name. On top of that when I try to give them short names with admin prompt and fsutil file setshortname it says permission is denied. I'm assuming this is because the Programs files folders are super super system folders.
I tried using %PROGRAMFILES% in the registry entries for rxinput.dll but that didn't work either. So I found the jankiest workaround ever. I copied the dll to the C drive root and then linked the registry to that file. (I actually copied the both dll files. one is under Program Files X86 and on under regular)
Now it works!!!!!
Jankiest workarund ever... but it works.

Wow, bit of an odd one. Good that you got it sorted though :good:
With windows you often have to take "but it works" as the correct solution There probably is a better way in this case (taking ownership of program files and then trying to make the changes you require first before resetting the ownership is what I would have looked at doing) but if it works now your probably best to just leave it rather than tempting the computer to say no again
