Hello all, this is my first post so please don't hit me to hard. I'll get right to it
I'm using a samsung vibrant and I'm currently using the obsidian 4.2 rom with the stock kernal.
Also using OCLF. Anyways I'm trying to change the boot animation that this rom uses and I can't seem to figure out how. the only files I can find in the /system/media file is a bunch of battery charge. Qmg files. No boot animation.zip files or anything. I do see the shut down png files but nothing else as far as the boot files. Is the file path for the startup boot different in this rom? I've tried moving files with managers, I've tried cmd commands but it all boils down to me not knowing where these boot animations should be pushed to. As of now its just the word android shining left to right a few times. No sound.

I cannot for the life of me get custom boot animations to work. I'm rooted. using root explorer i've used every tutorial on the internet! i'm on an Motorola Milestone running GOT 2.2 rom.
I put the "bootanimation.zip" on my SD card, i then move it to system/BIN and replace my original boot animation. Reboot the phone and nothing. just about 10 seconds or so of the Motorola "M" logo. I've tried everything. putting the files in there unzipped. The only thing that looks a bit odd to me is that the original "bootanimation" file's icon is just a plain white icon. but when ever i move the new bootanimation file over it shows up as a zip file. this has to have something to do with it? i also screwed around with the permissions so that the new bootanimations permissions matched the old one. anyone have any idea what i'm doing wrong here?
LOCATIONS OF SOUNDS AND ANIMATIONS [WIP]
From what I have found, this is the best list I have...
.qmg(animations) .Wav (MP3)
Before you start make sure that you have root obviously
Using root explorer and making sure that write protect off
Add .bak to the end of file to keep it from running...
You can use any Mp3 just change the file name from .mp3 to .wav on the phone
Boot sound;
/system/etc/PowerOn.wav
Boot up animation;
/system/media/bootsamsung.qmg
/system/media/bootsamsungloop.qmg
/system/bin/samsungani
Charging animations(power off);
/system/media/battery_charging_XXX.qmg
Shutdown sound;
/system/media/audio/ui/shutdown.ogg
Shutdown video (directory of .qmg);
/system/media/shutdown/
"The binary file for stock boot animations is /system/bin/samsungani as an FYI"

Thank you-Imoseyon! [EP1Q] GB Kernel W/Custom boot animation support! http://rootzwiki.com/showthread.php...on-kernel-(leaked-stock-repacked-v0.22-9-4-11)
and everyone else that helped me compile this list
I hope this is a help anyone that needs to find these, and if there are changes to be made just post, and I will edit to correct.
You can delete the shutdown.qmg file and replace it with a png sequence and it will still play properly, for anyone interested.
.qmg files and limited suport for this new tech
Hello,
I have really been reading for 3 days and there is not much on this topic.
What I understand is that the .qmg files can be replaced on the Froyo versions if the Kernel supports it with png's but not GBE's. I have been successful in changing the the boot animations (only) .qmg's with .qmg's. These files are very limited in my searches and found some posted here.
http://www.nubecoder.com/files/android/SPH-D700/bootani-qmg/
png's (bootanimation.zip) will not work in the GB? Am I correct, because there is not yet a kernel to support the GBE's? Can anyone clarify or am I really messed up in my thinking.

Imoseyon has a GBE Kernel which supports Bootanimation changes.
I tried custom boot animations on GB and the system never kills the process, so the boot animation keeps going unless you manually kill it via adb. That's the only reason I didn't include it in my repacked kernel.
Imoseyon Kernel v.22
Says it supports custom boot animation check it out!
Read OP on Imoseyon's OP for instructions

Ok so I have the pbj boot ani that imnuts posted over in the fascinate area and I got a different pbj boot up sound that is 17 secs long. The boot ani works fine but it cuts off the sound early. Is that because the Gummy 2.0 imoseyon kernel boots up the phone faster than normal?

I didn't say that custom boot animations didn't work, I said it never goes away. Maybe he did something different, I don't know, but I tried 3-4 different things to get the boot animation working properly in EP1Q, and it never worked right if it wasn't the stock boot animation.
bootanimation.zip
What I have found is that this does work if the file is renamed sanim.zip and the kernel supports it. These files contain .png's not .qmg
However I have not been able to get the orginal droid charge animation to work because it is in the .qmg format. I am on the EP1W voodoo kernel.

Turn off animations / sound?
I'm a bit of an "old school" linux guy - and like seeing my device boot messages as the device loads.
Is there a way you can turn off the animations and sound, and just get the boot messages?
I wonder how can i convert .png to .qmg
or just make it works because i want to change my charging animation
For starters I've been trying to change my boot animation, something I put together myself. Tool used to swap the repacked bootanimation.zip was Root Explorer and I do have Superuser/ root permissions and it all appeared to swap over without fuss but somehow doesn't show booting the phone. While I successfully killed off the old animation. mine is not appearing. The bootanimation file being used is .pngs with the original file structure, all I did was overwrite existing ones on my pc with my preferred images so no need to overwrite the existing desc.txt file. Any suggestions on where I boofed things?
The shutdown animation I can't find, browsed the system/media and data folders without joy. Could any of the learned members here be able to direct me to where the shutdown animation is hiding as I so hate telco provider logos left on phones not tied to contracts?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.
This little tool did the trick for the boot animation and should work for the shutdown animation when I find the little sod.

Shut down animation is in the power off apk I believe I made it black and white in my theme back in the day
Thanks for the tip there Samno, looks I'm off googling now to see how to recompile Apks.
You can just drag and drop in winrar just don't change the compression settings should work as long as there named the same and in the right format, won't hurt for you to learn though
Learning by my errors by the looks of things, unpacked and repacked with Winrar and a rename to apk utility found here after doing my file swap and now getting reboots instead of shutdowns.
I should have kept an eye on this thread before charging off like a nutter.
Thanks again Samnos.
Sorted the reboot issues as I hadn't dumped off the original APK and just edited the archive to replace my ingloriously modified version..
I have read the information on manually changing the boot animations, but has anyone used a tool to do it? Rom Tool Box and a slew of other apps have change boot animation functions. I was just wondering if anyone has successfully used any stand alone app to accomplish this? also boot logos?

I tried Rom Toolbox but it doesn't chance animation on mine. I don't know nor can find where the settings or the directory is on the tf700 is to change it in Rom toolbox. If you know... please share it or a link to the answer. Thanks
Ice, rooted and unlocked. NVflash backup
Boot Animations works fine.
Apparemtly tf700 users can't get this to work either. just need to know which dir tf700 actually uses.

I've copied an LCARS one to /data/local and works perfectly.
How To Change, Customize & Create Android Boot Animation [Guide]
So you have found a boot animation that you want to install on your phone? Created one of your own and can’t wait to see it in action on your device? All you have to do is copy it at a certain location on your device. There are two locations you can copy it: /data/local and /system/media, and both have their advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages of copying it to /data/local is that you will not require root access for it and it should work for all non-rooted devices without running the risk of changing anything in the /system partition. Furthermore, if a bootanimation.zip file is found in both locations, Android ignores the one found in /system/media and gives priority to the one in /data/local. A disadvantage of this method is that upon a hard reset (also called a full data wipe or a factory reset), the new boot animation will be lost.
Copying the boot animation to /system/media/ is possible only if your device is rooted and you have read+write access to the /system partition. An advantage of this method is that upon a hard reset, the new boot animation will still remain and there will be no need to apply it again. A disadvantage is that it requires ADB or a root level file browser such as Root Explorer or Super Manager.

Thanks for the info. I saw that and tried it but no luck. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Tried to change it with ROM Toolbox pro also an doesn't work. Am rooted and unlock but no JOY. I did find the /system/media/bootanimation.zip file but it just doesn't load.
Update: I copied the animation.zip files to both /system/media and also data/local. The only thing that loads is the White Asus sign for about 5 sec then a Black screen for about 20 sec then boots normally. Theres got to be a setting that directs the bootanimation file to load but can't find what file the boot looks for to load where to find bootanimation.zip.

This, to me, looks like the animation is corrupt or is not a boot animation. Check out this tool. Restore the original animation to /system/media and then use the one in the link of my previous post and put that in /data/local.
Thanks. I checked out the program and tried it but got errors pushing the file. to /media but it worked going to /local. tried previewing with romtools pro but not working. I'm stumped. Found a bunch of treads for this problem but nothing. files are not corrupted. I can get the boot animation files to run outside of android on a pc ect but not while trying to get them to animate inside there folders.... /local or /media. Somewhere in the boot process it's not loading. Need to find out why the White Asus animation works for a few seconds and where it is. It used to turn Brown/ Goldish and rotate but no longer. Anyone else with any guess's?
Also: Forgot to mention am using the JB bootloader.

That is not the boot animation of Asus, it's a still image embedded in either the bootloader or something close to it. It's not mean to be customized, the metallic ASUS logo with the light effect and then the circular progress indicator are part of the default bootanimation.zip

Sorry for the wait. I have no way of uploading the animation file in question here. Looking for somewhere to upload it so you can look at it but as I said the file is not the problem. I need to reinstall the bootloader which is 9.4.5.30r01 Not sure how to just do that as I haven't looked into it. The 9.4.5.30r01 came from the nvflash tread in this forum. I need to research if I install a jb bootloader if I still have nvflash "JUST IN CASE" Have a nice day.

No problem, I have ROM Toolbox myself and got the animation. While playing around (copying animations to my tablet from my NAS) I figured out what might be wrong on your side.
Make sure your bootanimation.zip is in /data/local and set the file permissions to rw-r--r--.

Thanks I already tried that. I found that in a post days ago but no luck. permissions where set right. Since my last post I updated to the 10.4.4.18 the odex version and I got bootanimation back. I backed it up using trwp 2.3.1.0 and tried changing it with Rom toolbox again. I set the paths to data/local in the settings. I installed the new bootanimation.zip file and rebooted. It would not boot up at all. Got past the white asus and went blank and I waited 10-15 min but noting. I rebooted by holding down power button for like 10-15sec and still would not boot up. Had to go back to trwp and reinstall my .18 backup and it started right up. Am going to give up for now till I can find out what is causing this for me and not others. Theres just something I'm missing and haven't pinned it down. Thanks for your time and effort. really appreciate it.
Update: 10-22 @11:34 pm. I got it working... Installed CleanRom 2.3 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1919851
Not even sure what I did other than flashed, wiped and reset. I checked the location of the bootanimation directory in this rom and it was only in /system/media. I read all the treads and info I could find. I used Rom Toolbox pro https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.liberty.toolboxpro&feature=search_result and changed settings to install it in /data/local as everywhere I read suggested that directory. If you've read what I've tried in the past I already did that over and over. Checked the permissions of the file and all. the one thing I didn't do was remount the zip file after copying to the directory. I didn't think I would have needed to since toolbox would have handled that... I though. Thats the only thing I can think of why it wouldn't load on boot is because it wasn't remounting. Anyways. I got it working but to be honest I still don't know why and I actually wanted to know why... A learning experiance if you want. One more time... Thanks a million for your time.

The reason why it don´t work is that Asus maybe has integrated a check of system files in some asus app or in the kernel (don´t now)
Changing Bootanimation does only work for me with a cleanrom and cm10.
as you sad when you change it in the stock rom it wont boot anymore.
So Asus dont want that someone removes their bootanimation i think

You don't have to remove/replace the Asus bootanimation. Just place your own in /data/local set the correct permissions and you're good to go.
So i've tried to use the bootbox app to change my boot animation, i've used itvon my old phones bu t this is 1st Samsung, what's the proper way to change it?
I'm also interested in this.
You might want to read this thread my friends ...

So yea, the reason I rooted my phone in the first place was to hopefully be shed of that obnoxious boot animation, but it seems our phones are "unique". I've done the bootanimation.zip replacement and permissions, I've done the individual files (my media directory has both, as well as one in the bin). And I STILL get the obnoxious virgin mobile animation. I followed the link above.. and uh..whaaaaa??
I'd like to hear from anyone that has successfully changed their boot up animation to something cool on their SM-J700P.
Would going to a custom ROM work? I have hesitated since I have marshmellow at present.
I have boot animation support. Depending on the response I get back I might write a "how to" thread. Plus I have a BUNCH of boot animations. I can post the directions and Samsungani files needed.. right now my phone boots up like PlayStation

Do you have the Android default boot animation system working, or just support for the qmg system?
Got it working. Look up bootanimation4U... Flash it. If you can't find it lemme know and I'll post it
Then, manually change out your boot animations or make a flashbable zip
Help here
I accidentally deleted bootanimation.qmg file in my Galaxy j7 and after that the samsung boot up screen is not showing... I tried flashing and manual methods to fix it but nothing seems to help.
Devs please provide different boot animation flashable zips..
Thanks in advance
