[Q] Wifi always not working until rebooting - Captivate General

The wifi always shows connected but fail to use the internet. Every time I reboot the cell phone, the wifi will work again. What is causing this problem and how to fix it.

greybunny are you rooted? If so I might know of something you could try to resolve your wifi issues.

I have the same issue - it seems to happen once or twice a week. I'm rooted on JH7.

That happens to me, too. If wifi disconnects. The internet wont work. I had to go in flight mode then reconnect and internet works again. Smh.....

No, it's a brand new phone.
I got 2 phones from Amazon, both phones had the same problem, one of it keeps shutting down itself, so I called amazon and they sent me a replacement. But all of the 3 phones I got so fat had this issue. And rebooting always solved the problem. Is there a software update from Samsung?

greybunny, if the phone is new then I must ask. Is the issue only on your home wireless? I ask b/c I have had this issue on my phone, I finally logged into my router to find that the IP the phone had was the same as the IP of my pc. So either the router was not assigning a new ip to the phone or it was trying to and the phone didn't want to give it up. I reflashed the firmware on my Router and have not had the issues since.....(knock on wood)
I had a friend who was having issues with her phone not even attempting to scan for wireless, seems there is an issue on android phones that the networking cache file or whatever it is gets cluttered and needs to be renamed. (Android recreates it)
The process is rather simple, I walked my friend through the steps over the phone w/o issues.
I had her use oneclick root/unroot to root her phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=739304
Then Had her go through these steps to rename the file.
http://androidforums.com/samsung-moment/46179-unable-scan-networks.html
The steps are for a samsung moment but still work. Also noted that the steps w/o rooting do not work. After you finish renaming the file you can use the application in the first link to unroot the phone and go back to stock
Edit: I would recommend going the router firmware upgrade path first then if still an issue look into renaming the file on the phone.

Captivate WiFi issue?

My captivate has a problem. It'll connect to WiFi no problem. Unfortunatly, after a while (could be anywhere from long 30 seconds to a few minutes) the WiFi stops sending data. I have to disable/reenable wifi to get it to work again. It still says connected to network, it just won't receive data.
Anyone know of this happening, have a fix, or maybe what I should look for that might be causing this issue?
I disabled recently installed running apps, no help.
I did try a speedfix last night, and it was unsuccessful, and I uninstalled it. Didn't test enough after that to know for sure if it was the issue, but I don't think so.
It was like, I was going through google reader, started a youtube vid, paused it, restarted it, and it wasn't loading. Just wouldn't load. That's when I think the problem started, and I haven't installed anything since then, that i haven't disabled/uninstalled.
Have you tried flashing the stock OS. Maybe this will help. My wifi has been solid so far but i will see if i get a problem like yours. Try reflashing. If it doesn't work post back.

I have the exact same issue on enterprise class cisco wifi APs. The only difference is the symptom is immediate, and not after an interval of time.

I'm thinking of this, but I don't know...
I have my music on my computer, I have my .apk's in a folder and my market synced with appbrain. Anything else I need to do? Will appbrain reset, and make me go find and reinstall everything?
What about the apps that I paid for, what happens to them?
Would be my first flash, and I'm thinking about flashing one of those I9000 roms, but that would be a last ditch effort. I really hope to avoid this.

It's an AT&T U-verse router, and only started a few hours ago, as near as I can tell.
I experience the same phenomenon of dropped wifi, and it occurs at any AP, but I have an interesting twist.
One time out of twenty when I start wifi, the 3g icon doesn't go away, but stays up on the status line with my wifi icon. On those rare occasions, my wifi stays solid for days. Unfortunately, it's random and rare.
same issue
My Wifi stops sending data and the 3G still shows. Sometimes restarting the router helps and sometimes nothing helps.
For anyone that might find this later, turns out (after two rom flashes) it was the router. I found this out when connecting my laptop to it. Surprised the captivate didn't admit it lost connection though.
I wish that were the case for me. My Captivate stays connected, but stops receiving at many different APs--Home, Starbucks, airport. I need a solution or a Scotch.
Peter
I had this exact problem, I tried a factory reset and it was still broken. I exchanged my phone and now it works perfectly holding a signal (except for enterprise 802.1x ap's which are known to be broken). (Also if you run dd-wrt check your logs for "deauthenticated due to local deauth", there is a problem with the wpa/wpa2 modules in either android or dd-wrt that they are not compatible with each other).
I actually found this searching for a solution to my own issue with WiFi. I actually fixed it while I was reading this. Unfortunately I have AT&T DSL with 2wire Modem. I went into the setting and setup MAC filtering and assigned it it's own IP. It has worked flawlessly for the past hour. I know this probably will not help when at other locations but at least at home I have a good connection.

Same router type as mine that lost it originally. Interesting, wonder if there is a connection? Or random coincidence.
I'm having a wifi issue as well, but not to the extent others have.
I connect fine, but it appears as though my data download speed is capped at <2mbps for both wifi and 3g?
My wife's iPhone is getting download speeds of over 10mbps on the same wifi network and >3mbps over 3g.
Is it worth flashing back to stock? or is this a known issue?
I'm running stock JH3 with SRE 1.2.1a with lagfix
I have this same issue and it's really random. Running JH2, sometimes it works on wifi, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes disabling\re-enabling wifi fixes it, but rebooting the phone always fixes it. Really frustrating...

On my phone do I can't see if you have a signature. It would help to tell us which rom you have installed, like JH7. That would make it easier too troubleshoot.

official att JH7, nothing rooted or modded in any way
I get this exact same problem. The Wifi on my phone sometimes works, sometimes does not (although it says it is connected). I too have had to reboot my phone just to get it working again...even then after it stops working after 30-ish min.
I also am also having other issues after the official update as well.
1) cannot add a gmail account for syncing on my phone.
2) cannot connect to AT&T server when trying to find an update.
I went to AT&T for the three issues that I am having and they were unable to find a fix, we even tried changing SIM cards.
Sounds like you have a corrupt file somewhere. You could always get the Odin3 one click here, do a master clear (same as factory reset), flash back to stock, download Mini Kies EXE File here to get back to the JH7 build. [HOWTO] Update to JH7 using Kies Mini (USA) just in case.
Just make sure you read the Odin steps, if you haven't done before.
Hope that helps.

Wifi problem just reared its ugly head after 48 hours with official Froyo

I may have bragged too soon on good ol' official Froyo. I had a smooth install and the only problem I've noticed is the messed up Quick Office deal like most others. Today I just had another problem start.
I've been using my secured home wifi network fine, but for some reason the Captivate will no longer connect to it. I've tried doing a battery pull, turning the phone off and back on, and even completely removing the home network from the list and then putting it back in. I'm sure the password is correct. It just sits there, saying "Obtaining IP address". It retries several attempts, and eventually gives up and lists my home network in the list as "Disabled"
This is significant suckage!

I had similar problem try unplugging router and plugging back in
Bless your heart! That did it! I just read on the AT&T forums that someone else had the exact same problem and he did a factory reset of his phone which fixed it. I was hoping I wouldn't have to go there
I found an easy solution to the problem. Open Allshare, then you should be good to go.
After opening Allshare, hit connect.
Yes sometimes power cycling the router is all that is needed. I notice this with laptop sometimes too.

Yeah that was me...
I tried everything else before the factory reset, but the reset fixed it, now I've got wi-fi with no problems
If you do a factory reset, I realize you have to reinstall all your apps, but what about the ones I paid for? Will I have to purchase those again? I'm thinking of doing one just because I think it will smooth things out and get rid of a couple of weird quirks like the Quick Office icon problem.

It works, but you have to do it every time, so it's more of a workaround than a fix.
I had an issue with connecting to one of my work wifi routers (would just sit there saying 'obtaining IP address' but never would connect) and could not fix it until I tried using "FXR WiFi Fix and rescue" app from the market. Free app, will erase ALL of your saved WiFi data so make sure you have your passwords for encrypted networks, but this fixed it with one click and a reboot. Seems to connect faster to the networks now as well. I had a similar problem after the previous update that went out OTA and had to reset the phone for that one.
I thought about trying this app, as my wifi issue returned today. I thought I had gotten rid of it by doing the factory reset, but alas it's back. I'm really contemplating a custom ROM more and more every day. I just don't know which one to go with that will provide everything I need. This app sure asks for a lot of permissions, so I'm sort of leary about istalling it.
Welp, I bit the bullet and tried the FXR app. No dice for me. I'm waiting for the wife to get done surfing so I can try a router power cycle. If that doesn't work, I'm looking at my second factory reset in less than a week. Froyo, you suck! I never had wifi issues until I upgraded to 2.2. What I can't understand is, why some of my issues are better, yet some are worse. Is it that difficult for these idiots to figure it out?
Just going to throw something out there, that I noticed yesterday. I'm on a custom ROM, but I noticed some pretty flaky results to my wifi, but only when I was using the modified TouchWiz launcher. The wifi had trouble connecting, and wouldn't sleep. The notification dropdown widget wouldn't control it. Then I switched to Go Launcher EX, and the behavior stopped.
Check another launcher, and see if that makes a difference. Sure, it's a longshot, but I'll be interested to see if the stock TW has the same issue as the modded version.
I was having the same wifi problem after updating firmware to official 2.2 kb1. I used fxr and now wifi connection works great.

Maddening wifi problems with Captivate

Ever since I got my Captivate, it has had issues with wifi. It's not my routers, or any configuration in my routers, as it happens with 3 different routers (not to mention that I work in IT, so it's definitely not the routers).
Here's what it does. When you start with a fresh boot, it works perfectly fine. As the day goes on, it gets worse; it starts dropping the connection randomly, and eventually stops working altogether. This wouldn't be so bad of a problem, but the point that it "tries" to start accessing a wifi AP, it drags the phone down in speed, eventually freezing, causing me to ave to reboot the device.
I already tried all options with wifi sleep policy; I've tried 3 different ROMs; I've tried clearing all wifi settings and letting the ROM generate a new .conf file, I've tried different wifi firmwares. Nothing works as it should.
What should I do now? Does anyone have any tips for me? I know it's the OS and not the phone, because the last ROM that worked perfectly was Perception 4.
Thanks for the help.
Easy fix I found.
Open Allshare, it should have come pre-installed.
Connect.
Your Wi-Fi problem should be fixed.
You will have to repeat this step when switching between locations, or when you come back to the troublesome router. I don't know why this works, but it does. It seems to have helped alot of other users in other forums with this problem. Maybe someone should make a sticky of this...seems to be a big problem with 2.2 Foryo.
Similar experiece with both an EVO and Captivate with a Linksys router and DLink wireless AP. Whenever I walked into the house, the other PCs attached to the router would stop working, the phone would not get data although it showed as connected and I had to reboot the router - both wired and wireless clients. The Linksys was a very old firmware and I had bad experieces with flashing a few previous devices. I ditched my Linksys for a DLink 8 port and wireless and have not had the issue with either the EVO, Captivate nor any devices attached to my network.

I have 2 Linksys routers with the latest firmwares, and one D-Link. No matter, it does the same thing with them all.
I should also mentioned that I already tested with changing the router's wireless broadcast channels, signal strengths, firmware updates, the whole 9 yards. The problem is the phone, not the networking equipment.
I used this on 3 Captivates in our house and they are all working great now. Had F&*%%#ed wifi issues before that. They are all ok now. Hope it lasts!

Update:
The Allshare thing works. The problem is that it's not a feasible workaround, because you have to keep doing that every time you want to restart the wifi after the screen goes to sleep or what not.
I will next try that config file delete. I read up on that last night, but didn't think that was it, because I already did a few ROM installs which didn't seem to clear it up.

i had wifi issues and still do. my girlfried does too with her Aria. The phone really seems to only work on routers who have a DNS set to google. The bar near my house it flys and at home i was getting no wifi so I changed my router DNS to google from comcast and its fine. I agree there is a problem but not one that is going to get fixed by Google
My wifi workaround
I had two captivates which both had problems with my home router. Reseting the router never fixed the issue, but resetting the phone did, at least for a few minutes.
I found that phone has problems using DHCP with routers that assign addresses in the 192.168.1.xxx range. It seems to be a conflict with some other internal IP in the Captivate or something. To get around this problem, I had to change the local address of my router to 192.168.2.1, and change the DHCP range to 192.168.2.xxx The new subnet cleared up the problem immediately for me and it hasn't returned, at least, not on my home router. Unfortunately, this won't work on hotspots or other networks that are stuck in the 192.168.1.xxx range.

I ran into this problem on my Router. Netgear wndr3700. For some reason when I turned the wifi on my phone either the router was assigning it the same address as my Tivo or my phone wasnt accepting anything but that address. To resolve I forgot the connection my phone then reflashed the firmware on my router. Then reconfigured the wifi on my phone. After that no more issues.
Well i honestly dont know whats wrong with mine. I've done all the "fixes" in this and other threads but it doesnt work. What is weird is that it connects using All Share and only All Share. However it does connect at other places like my friend's, sister's, granparents and gf's houses. I think I'm gonna go to att and demand a new phone and an upgrade
Just wanted to post an update on this. For the most part, deleting the wifi configuration file in data\wifi seems to have cured the problem. The wifi signal did get stuck on one or two occasions, but I'm bound to believe that the issue was caused elsewhere.

WiFi does not reconnect (Android Issue #58230)

EDIT BELOW:
Hey y'all, I recently got a Nexus 5 and I've been having issues with WiFi reception. I've read the other threads concerning the inability to connect, but I can easily connect to a wireless router the first time.
It's when I disconnect from one specific router and try to access another one that I run into issues. It simply hangs in Connecting, and then just reverts to Saved. The only way for the phone to connect to a router is for me to reboot it, in which case it does so quickly.
I was wondering if anyone had any insight into tackling this problem, or if it's an inherent software issue. This occurs both at home and at school, where I move from building to building (switch routers), but the login credentials are the same.
Thanks!
EDIT #2: I spoke to a Google rep a second time and they decided that since my factory reset did not fix the issue, they were sending me a replacement unit. I'll update this when I get the new unit and see if it still has the WiFi issue or not.
EDIT:So this issue seems to have garnered some attention in the 4.3 release of Android, and a handful of Nexus 5 owners have already reported the same issue (myself included)
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=58230
(Sorry, I can't post outside links because I'm a new user)
So if you have a similar problem, feel free to star and add your own comments.
I happened to have the same problem......not sure if this is a hardware problem or not.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Ah, I see. Well, I've narrowed the process to simply toggling the WiFi on and off, rather than having to reboot the phone. It's still occurring though.
If I manually disconnect and then reconnect to a router however, this problem doesn't seem to happen. It's only when I exit a router's range that I have to do a WiFi on and off cycle.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Oh, and I notice that the perceived signal strength drops when I try to reconnect to my router. Again, toggling the WiFi on and off allows the Nexus 5 to immediately connect to the router.
I hope this is a software issue.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Hm..Toggling wifi on and off doesn't seem to work for me...It hangs in connecting for a few seconds and then goes back to saved... I still have to turn off/on the phone before it can connect to a different wifi hotspot..
I've got the same problem: switching wifi networks, from home to work and viceversa, my N5 doesn't connect. It needs a reboot.
Ciao.
I edited my original post with a link to the AOSP issue tracker concerning this problem. I also contacted Google concerning this and they just said to do a factory reset... To no avail.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
This evening, before entering home, I switch off WiFi, then I toogled airplane mode, I toogled WiFi on, and I got connection perfectly working.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Interestingly, when first resetting the phone, I had to toggle Airplane mode in order to reconnect. However, eventually I can just toggle WiFi and it works fine. I'm not sure where the change occurred, unfortunately.
Hopefully my replacement phone doesn't exhibit this issue. Will update this, as mentioned in the initial post, when I get it. I still think it's a software problem, however, since folks that had 4.2 and updated to 4.3 suddenly experienced this issue.
So I'm starting to have this EXACT problem myself. I have a very strong signal for my home wifi and it's basically dropping to poor when I try to connect. After displaying Connecting/Saved several times, it still fails to work. I have tried rebooting it several times, toggling wifi and airplane mode, to no avail. Funny thing is, my work and home wifi have been working perfectly prior to this.
It wasn't until tonight that I started to have any problems. I moved some files through USB, just some stuff from my nexus 4, rebooted about 15 minutes later, and I couldn't get wifi after the reboot. Weird.
EDIT: I've tried a plain factory reset, didn't work. I ended up flashing the factory image, still didn't work. I'm not sure how WiFi just STOPPED working for me. Contemplating an RMA... I really hope someone comes up with something, seeing as I have a perfect screen and none of the other defects listed before.
This may be a fix!
Hey guys, so I've been keeping up with two AOSP issue trackers
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=58230
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=61945
And in the second link (Issue #61945), scroll down to post #9 Ryan, and he details what he's tried in terms of doing a factory reset WITHOUT having Google automatically restore data and settings. I've documented my results trying this, and it seems (at this early stage of my testing) rather promising.
Like Ryan said, it seems like it's restoring some WiFi settings that may not play well with 4.4 (and maybe even 4.3 for those exhibiting this issue as detailed in the first link (issue #58230))
So here's what I did so that Google would not restore the WiFi settings. Unfortunately, this does mean you may have to manually reinstall your apps and re-input your data by hand.
What I did:
1. Go to Backup & reset
2. UNCHECK "Back up my data" and "Automatic restore"
3. Perform Factory reset
4. After resetting and prompted to do so, input WiFi router credentials to connect to WiFi
5. Skipped logging into existing Google account
6. Skipped making a new Google account
7. After reaching Android homescreen, I manually added my existing Google account
I have a feeling that steps 5-7 are unnecessary, but I did that just to make sure it wouldn't try to restore any of the data.
It's been working so far, but I haven't been able to test it out much since I'm a school currently and it has blanket WiFi coverage (difficult to go out of range). However, I will add that the signal seems stronger than before, AND it's more difficult to lose WiFi signal now than before. Like, nearly impossible here.
Let me know how it goes for y'all. Hope this works.
Oh, and perhaps try

before you do the factory reset. It may or may not work (one person said it did). I haven't tried it though, but if it works, it'll save you the trouble of having to do a factory reset.

Hope this works.

i have gone as far as complete factory reset
fresh install
not connection to google at all
so no previous settings
no sim card
nothing
just android 4.4 stock and a wifi connection
the issue still exists
5ghz seems to work fine but 2.4 connects/disconnects like a yoyo even though the connection strength is at full

Thanks!

I'm having the same problem, my connection is strong, but I can not reconnect to any network ... this is really annoying. I need you to help me with something: is there any way to eliminate all current wifi settings without making a factory reset?
I will wait for a fix until december, if not, I will send my phone to rma...
I ended up going with the bricked kernel and this issue has disappeared (at least for now). Been stable without any signal drops or wifi reconnect issues for solid 2 days. It is a record!

tried 2 different varieties of cm

I have also seen this on my device that I just received on the 15th. The wifi seems to drop out and re-connect after a while... But, my other, older android devices do not show this issue. After reviewing the previous post about NOT restoring from google.. and creating a fresh install.. I am beginning to suspect if that was the case. I was hoping that keeping it stock and not messing around with kernels and roms was one of the best features of a nexus device. I really hope google provides an update to fix this.
So just a quick update. I didn't restore from Google on my second device and the WiFi had been fine for close to a week now.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
