So I just rooted my phone today and I was wondering what are the next steps that I should take. Should I make a recovery file just in case my system crashes? If so, how would I do that? Secondly, do I have to flash a ROM to my rooted phone or may I just keep the stock version? If I decide to keep my stock version, would updates still happen automatically or would I have to unroot and then update? As you can see, I'm a noob at this.
well it seems that you've nearly got the hang of the rom manager so that's your backup problem solved, but it's not a good idea to backup your unrooted stock rom as when there is an over the air update it will reflash your rom to a rooted version
I would boot into recovery, probably Clockworkmod and do a backup. Then download Rom Manager or search the web for Roms and play around and see what one works best for you. I would leave kernels and radios alone for now until you play with flashing roms.
So I did a backup through rom manager lite version. I was thinking of flashing bb.01 but can I do that through rom manager, despite the fact that I have the free version? Also, when I wipe cache and data, I would lose my contact info right? So how would I recover my contacts after I install BuglessBeast? lastly, is it safe to flash a rom through the free version of rom manager because I had several attempts using backup ability on rom manager before it finally made a backup.

Got the new i727 from Rogers. First time Android user, come from the BB world.
Want to back up my stock ROM. Installed paid version of Rom Toolbox. Went to the Manage ROM section, and it told me I had to have ROM Manager.
Downloaded the free version of ROM manager, and it told me I had to have ClockworkMod installed, and asked if I wanted to install it.
Said YES, and it took me to a group of phones, not the SGS2 LTE. So I cancelled.
So three questions:
1. When I buy Rom Toolbox, why do I have to then get ROM Manager?
2. What is ClockworkMod?
3. Which phone do I select that will work on my Rogers Samsung Galaxy S2, and will that finally allow me to back up my stock ROM.

I'm not familiar with ROM Toolbox, nor do I know why you would use it. I'm not much of a fan of ROM Manager, either, but it does work. Install it, and select the T-Mobile SGS2 to get CWM installed. You can then take a Nandroid backup.
That said, backups of untouched stock ROMs are much less needed when there's already an Odin TAR out.
What does it mean to "take a nandroid" backup?
Got it. Installed CWM and did the ROM backup, now have a Nandroid backup, also copied to PC. I'm assuming if I've done this correctly, I can now re-install the stock ROM if I had to.
Once I have a nandroid backup that is known to be good, is there any situation (other than hardware) that would prevent me from un-bricking my phone by simply installing a known good ROM?

And where is CWM? Is it on the ROM itself, or on the boot sector? If the ROM is bad, or boot sector becomes corrupted, how do you access CWM?
And even if you can't access CWM - in other words, if you can't get past the Samsung logo - you can always return to stock with Odin.
basically as long as you can boot to either download mode or recovery you're safe.

I have looked really hard to find the answer to this, but I couldn't find it.
I have a HTC EVO Shift, which was already flashed to Boost Mobile before I bought it.
After looking at the Boot Animations and apps, I realized the phone was also running the MikShifted-G ROM.
I have been using the phone for some time now, but after I found that my phone was not getting the upgrade to ICS, I decided that I wanted to switch ROMs, especially ones that were ICS and stuff.
I followed many tutorials and I have done the following:
-I have rooted my phone.
-I have installed ROM Manager, and I have gotten ClockWorkMod to work.
-I backed up my data with the backup option.
Here are the questions I have:
-It says on most ROMS to "wipe everything." If I choose to Factory Reset/Wipe All in ClockWorkMod, will that un-flash my phone back to Sprint? I do not want to factory reset if my phone will not run on Boost Mobile, hence it is a lot cheaper.
-If I install another ROM and decide to go back to the ROM my phone used to have, does installing ROM Manager again on the new ROM allow me to use the backup I made to go back to how my phone used to be?

I can't say for sure but doing a full wipe and flashing a ROM shouldn't have any affect on your phone working with boost. Search the EVO threads, I'm sure you'll find a lot of people on boost flashing various ROMs and kernels.
As far as actually flashing the ROM, you should get familiar with using recovery manually, not just relying on ROM manager to do everything for you. Here's a nice guide on how to flash ROMs http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1266885. Be sure to make a nandroid backup before flashing any ROM (If you already made a backup using ROM manager it can be restored either via recovery or the ROM manager app.)
Also consider using Dread 7 Us's modified recovery. Based off Clockwork Mod but with some great differences: super wipe where you can choose which partitions to wipe and do it multiple times automatically(much less tedious than Clockword Mod's wipe each once method) and it also removes the ton of 'NO's' you have to scroll through to confirm an action in Clockwork Mod and others upgrades I don't recall.

Flash it just like Clockwork Mod but do a nandroid before just in case. Make sure to also flash the updated one as the first version had MD5 check issues.

As long as you have s-off nandroid restore will work fine. As far as the roms it depends on if the roms have the boost mobile apn's in them or not. A.F.A.I.K. CM7 roms and variants have the most apn support. Might want to do a search on google if cm7 supports boost or not.

How did you try to flash the RUU? You can not flash it like a normal ROM
Also if you are looking for the RUU try HERE
I see what you're trying to do, that won't work...you can't flash a recovery to get to stock because stock phone won't flash from recovery, which is why once you get root the first thing you do is flash a custom recovery. Use the RUU to flash it back to shipped state stock, or if you are trying to keep root and just want to use a different ROM. More clarification on what you are trying to accomplish would be nice.
If you did a Nandroid prior to flashing CM10 I would wipe all partitions except SD and restore the Nandroid, if all you want to do is get CM10 off your phone. Remember Nandroid Backups are your friend do them before flashing anything and save them to your PC if you don't want the SD space taken. Doing this has made flashing pain free and hassle free. If I don't like how my phone is running after a flash I can always get it right back to how it was when I was happy with it. Lastly there was a time when I had a Nandroid backup of a Sense ROM and was on AOSP and wanted to flash back to Sense, well my Backup wouldn't flash. After spending hours raising hell I did a clean install of the ROM booted once, then rebooted into recovery and flashed the Nandroid backup that had the settings I was using (when I was on Sense, it won't restore data and apps used on AOSP)...sorry if its not much help but more details are needed. But you have a starting point.

i have installed CM10 without backing up any image, therefore i cannot restore the orifginal vendor's rom. Nandroid back would have prevented this situation. the second problem is that I couldnt find any RUU for this phone. indeed the link you attached seems to have it bu unfortunately it is in chineese and after pushing all the buttons i couldn't download the file. so my options are
1- to pray that someone will be kind enough to publish it in a manner that it is accessible
2- I have a friend with a simillar phone , can i somehow back up hus rom and restore it in mine ????

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 (US Wifi+IR) P3113 [ROM Build Number: IMM76D.P3113UEBLH2] which is still 100% stock. I plan on installing a custom rom, but first I want to make a complete backup of everything.
I know I need to use a custom recovery (I plan on using ClockworkMod) and flash the custom rom. I don't have any problems with that part.
I also have all of my data already backed up. I plan on doing a full factory reset before installing anything anyway.
My main issue is that I want to backup the original stock ROM and all other partitions/images before making any permanent changes.
Since the device doesn't support fastboot I can't just "fastboot boot cwm-recovery.img" to do a temporary boot to backup the stock rom and recovery. All the instructions I've seen indicate I must first flash a new recovery image then boot the device from that. This would cause me to not have a backup of the stock recovery image.
I didn't see any backup options in Heimdall or ODIN either. No luck with Check Fus either.
Is there a way to backup the stock recovery image without flashing anything to the device first?
I have looked at sammobile at the P3113 firmwares, but I can't be sure those apply to my version (US WiFi + *IR blaster*) or would have the stock recovery image. This is exactly what I have been trying to do too. I have searched the forums and google and haven't been able to figure out how to do this either. I was actually fixing to post the same questions myself and thought I should do one last search before I did, which lead me to this thread
I have the same tab and build (P3113 - ROM Build Number: IMM76D.P3113UEBLH2). As an android newbie I have been reading/researching for hours a day since Christmas and there is still a lot I don't understand. This is the first step I would like to take though and I intend on doing a full factory reset before installing anything too.

You should find and download the stock rom for your device on the net. I myself do not recommend you to install custom rom as it can brick ur device.
For the backup:-
1. For the backup of your apps download this app (App Backup and Restore) from the play store. It can backup ur apps and then can also restore them back but also dont forget to take the backup of this app itself.
2. Connect your tablet/phone to your pc/laptop and then copy all the files in your SD card and Device and store them to seperate folders on your pc/laptop.
3. Now the backup of all your files is created.
According to my information you cannot backup your current rom you will have to download the stock rom from the net which you need and then fla**** in case of a mishappening or incase you wish to revert back.

@kunalthakur - There isn't an official Samsung download source that one can use. Most of the other downloads I've seen have had the recovery.img modified to enable the backup in the first place. We want a trustworthy (verified no malicious software added) stock OEM rom/recovery with no modifications.
I have had some initial success getting the Samsung Kies software to attempt to download the current official ROM from official Samsung servers. I guess Samsung wants people to only download via Kies instead of offering it on their website to reduce the load on their servers and prevent end-users from flashing the wrong ROM because they didn't know what they were doing.
I will update if I have success getting a clean download.
If u are successful in flashing the original rom then notify me too as i dnt know of any such method. Oh by the way here is a site where you can download original roms.

I'm using Galaxy Note 10.1 (N8013, UEALI3).
As our hardware and software are almost identical, I'll assume things will be the same for you and me.
How to create a full backup of your device, without touching anything?
There must be a way, but I also couldn't find it.
So, I found a way that just works as we expect.
To create a full stock device backup, with all images and partitions, without rooting, you'll have to....
Flash CWM! No, please, wait, let me finish...
When you flash a custom Recovery, it is actually not something permanent.
Once you boot your stock rom with stock kernel, your custom recovery is overwritten with the default one.
So, you can flash your CWM, and reboot your device immediately to it.
If you let your stock ROM boots, you are going back to stock recovery.
EXCEPTION:
- When you boot to CWM, choose "Reboot", you'll be given the following option: "ROM may flash stock recovery on boot. Fix? This can not be undone.". If you choose "Yes", you'll never get to stock again, even while booting stock rom.
So, flashing a custom recovery is actually very similar to "fastboot boot recovery recovery.img", as no permanent damages are made.
Finally, that's what you'll have to do:
1) Use Oding to Flash CWM. DO NOT Restart your device from ODIN.
2) Force turn off your device (press power button for > 8 seconds)
3) Boot to recovery (power button + volume up)
4) Make a full backup! In this backup, you'll have the CWM recovery.
5) Reboot your device.
6) Boot normally, and copy your backup from SDCard to your computer.
How to restore the stock I just saved?
1) Flash CWM again if needed.
1.1) If you want to get rid of the binary count, you'll have to make CWM permanent.. for a while.
1.2) Boot into CWM, go to Reboot Device, and choose "Yes - Make it permanent".
1.3) Boot your rooted ROM, download and execute TriangleAway.
1.4) Ok, your download count is zero.2) Now, go back to CWM and restore your backup.
3) This time, you have your stock rom + stock kernel, but still have the CWM recovery.
4) Boot your stock rom
5) Now, you have your stock rom + stock kernel + stock recovery.
I know this is not what you REALLY wanted (extract stock images, including stock recovery image), I wanted that to..
But this just works.

But then i read this

It features a long list of ROMs which is frequently updated and you can install ROMs to the SD card or OTA (over the air). If you want to unlock features like premium ROMs, update notifications, and automatic backups, then you’ll need to spring for the premium version."
So now i am trying to figure out what custome themes are and what custom kernels are compared to the Avatar ROM i installed.

Now let me put this simple. The ROM is the operating system of your device (OS). You know what a theme is. Its just changing the way things look can be your icons, interface shade/colour,etc. Its just visuals. And the next is kernel. Kernels are the thing which links your OS and hardware. Literally they are responsible for the way your phone behaves. Custom kernels has tweaks whicj can improve your device's performance, the battery drain, way your processor's I/O works.. It helps you to do things like over clock and under clock,etc. But it is risky as your manufacturer has made a stable kernel for your device and these custom kernels may be unstable. Sure thing you dont want to mess with em unless you know what you are doing. Now as you have choice to do things like changing ROMs and Kernels using Rom manager, i would recommend you to use CWM and flash zip files which has ROMs and Kernels made specifically for your device as this is more safe. But be sure to have a backup as installing something not meant for your device will brick it. Dont worry. Have a backup and also Odin with stock rom incase its really hard bricked. But i never made any backups... Is it to late for that?
Is my best choice to download Titanium Backup and backup everything with that application?

CWM is clockword mod recovery. An advanced recovery which has more options than stock recovery. I guess you already has cwm. Probably it must be what you used to flash the Rom and clear cache. Now to Titanium backup, it backs up the whole phone, so do cwm. As we use CWM for our flashing and other things, cwm backups should be enough unless you got space on your sd to have many backup files. And if your phone is working perfectly right now then its never late to take a cwm backup as if you ever encounter a bootloop while tweaking, you can restore your phone. Sometimes even cwm fails to fix your phone. This is where Odin comes in handy. Odin is a pc software which can be used to flash the stock Rom of your device. You can search and find the Stock Rom for your device and region if you google. You can find how to flash using odin guides out there. Flashing stock rom via odin will remove every traces of ever tweaking your phone which includes rooting, flashing of custom roms and kernels,etc. Your device will be just like when you bought it. This is helpful when you want to take your phone to service centres as rooting and doing other stuffs will void your warranty. Hopes this helps...

CWM is a shell and not an app and it cannot be installed on android os so you cant access it through your Rom but you can run it whenever you need it but through stock recovery. CWM comes as a .zip file which should be selected from stock recovery or in other words flash it. It will open cwm recovery. And you can access advanced recovery options which stock recovery doesn support. Well search and download cwm for your device, place it sd card root(not inside any folder), run it using install update option on your stock recovery, it will open cwm which will be in yellow colour themed. Select backup and restore opt in it and select backup. That will take care of taking full backup of your device.

Well.. Thats good to hear. And there was none other than me. And anyway a small precaution, never interrupt while you are flashing through Odin coz it will hard brick your device which is literally R.I.P to your device.
