Searched "LED notification" and found 5 posts with exactly the same question.... and answers.
There has even been a post on the portal about hardware modding a dedicated LED into the front of the phone.

The short answer... "lg o2x touch led notification" from the android market. Works great for me.

Xperia arc led

Hi there people, does any one know if u could make an app to get the leds beteende the buttons to flash on new sms and so on?
+ 1 to this question... i know that "LightFlow" appwill allow the keypad leds ( the two between the three keys ) to lit up Constantly.. but "Led Me Know" app does not even find the leds to control.. Its something with 2.3 android, and LED codes..
Hopefully Led Me Know will support this at some point.. or some other app ofcourse
Either way, im looking forward to it.. as the Arc's Notification led is almost useless if you lay your phone down..
But i quess this post should be in http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1182

Yep, but in some cases like watching a movie, entering video players, I should wish for that lights to be off.

Try using the Tasker app to play the sound of your choice when your device detects light. You might have to use a light sensor app and a music player of your choice.
Try for a setup that works by detecting light, then playing your sound, use Tasker to set up the series of actions the way you need them between the light sensor app and music player.
