Ok. So, Sprint is giving me the boot for excessive data usage (13 gig in November & over 20 gig in December) plus I'm roaming. The area I moved to isn't serviced by Sprint. So, I was double time slapped on the hand. I know Straight Talk uses Verizon..aka CDMA. So, I was wondering if anyone had a tutorial or knew if it was possible to flash my phone to work with StraightTalk. Thanks!
im working on this too
i will keep you updated as i research, do you have the cdma workshop software or something compatible, i know little of this, and is your evo unlocked at the moment, you need to find the compatible prl file for straight talk, these guys in here are adept at this stuff, i will dig around and repost what i find in here
cdma workshop software is the best so i know
Straight Talk CDMA
So anybody got any info of this or hows is it going, if it did work would I have 3g speeds and what would be the download limit before they cut me off every month I use around 3 to 6 gigs a month on Sprint. Thanks for any all info.

It's not a cap. They harass you if you go over 5gb.
I'm interested in flashing to straight talk a tutorial would be great

I also would like to see a tutorial showing how to flash a motorola droid to straight talk. is there a free cdma program a person can use?

I get on average 26kbps down. I also frequently drop down to 1X. Simply awful. I know it isn't a coverage thing. Sprint's map for 3G says the whole city and then some are covered. I call BS. This will be my third Sprint phone with the same issues. I've called Customer Service but they say they can't do anything unless more people complain.
Could someone help me with modifying a PRL to get better service in my area? There is no 4G where I live so using some Verizon towers wouldn't matter much. I already know how to flash a different PRL but I don't know how to read one or modify one.
If I hadn't just bought my Shift I'd be ditching Sprint for someone else. ANYONE else.
I feel your pain can't beat the price though.

Nope. Didn't make the least bit of difference. Download is still around 24(ish) kbps. I didn't mention it before but my upload is 10x my download at around 250kbps.
What Rom are you using? Well you can always call Sprint and complain. Explain to them how bad your Data services are. I've heard of them on more than one occasion, offering a free Airwave to customers with bad Data services. It may take more than one call. But if you get it for free it will be worth it.
I was having all types of connection issues. I formated my sd card. With ext4 at 1gb and swap at 256, then installed cyanogenmod nightly 243, boot install gapps new one, boot installed sparkies script and v10 kernal. And settled in. I am getting 6 times faster everything on a 8gig class 4. Did it to the wifes too but did 2gig ext4 cause she has a butt ton of apps. It made her give up miui. Well kinda lol she wanted that 3.1 miui launcher. But anyway. Do this it should boost your bandwidth. I sure as hell did mine. I am getting 2Mb on 3g now up to 7 or 8 on 4g and 15 on wifi.

There is a thread in the Evo 3d forum here on xda that has the phone # for Sprints retention dept. If you call that number and explain that your cell and data signal sucks and you drop 2 out of 3 calls they should send you a Air Rave for no charge and won't charge you for the service. If I get time to nite and can find it I will post the link.
Edit: Here is the number for retention (877)775-4886 Hope you get some satisfaction I know it worked for me.

Almost makes me wish I had Crappy 3G in my area. Almost , but not really . Already been there done that and it was not a good time .
EDIT :
Was just reminded of something reading a post by sparksco. What radios are you using? Have you updated them?

I think your right that the kernel does make a huge difference as well as the patch. If your phone is using all of your memory/ram then data connection has a hard time keeping up. Pershoot makes really good kernels...

I have fair 3g speeds but 4G coverage (which is why I went with sprint and the shift) in Atlanta is really spotty in the metro area. When you are any cell store the strength and speeds will be great to get you to buy in my opinion. You don't get to see how it will be in daily use until the contract and sale are complete
I can see downtown Atlanta from my condo but yet I get no 4G and fair 3G speeds. That's how it is all over Atlanta. I understand the frustration especially if you are paying the $10 4G fee. I went to ask about the coverage and speeds. I told the rep I was upset at paying a $10 extra fee for 4G when it is so spotty and slow. Apparently the $10 fee is not for 4G, insert bs excuse here ! While I can't be of any help to your speed issues I want to say that even where I live it's a problem. Most of the time I keep my phone connected to my wireless router and then in areas where free wireless is offered I connect to it running an SSH tunnel app to my router at home.
Ok, I'm still getting ****ty data service and I've tried almost everything I know how to do. Does anyone.know how to modify a PRL so I can force a connection to some Verizon towers? Obviously I still want to use Sprint for calls since I rarely have issues with that but the 3G is completely unbearable

Try THIS THREAD for what you need. Specifically THIS post.
when i updated the radio and wimax radio on my shift i did notice a little stronger signal in general. but in my experience especially in fringe areas, MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD then TRY TRY TRY TRY then AGAIN AGAIN AGAIN several PRL variations. i think in general the 00001.prl everyone agrees is a good one to start on. just make sure your phone is set with NO restrictions concerning data roaming. half the time at least half the time im not even on sprints network, lol. if i call customer service i usually get verizon, but i have got alltel and USCC before lol. heh, in the gulf of mexico it shows up as something like 'national calling system' or something lol.
i never noticed the thread recommended above, so i will trying that in approx. 47 secs lol! so thankd for pointing that out.
but always, when i doubt, keep adding towers.....
cheers,
disco

Well, after using the 00001 (or whatever) PRL that is 100% Verizon, my speeds have increased dramatically. Its like getting a new phone. I don't plan on using that long term as Sprint can get uppity about it but I'll try it for a while and then see if I can settle on some sort of hybrid approach or even that corporate PRL you linked to.
Thanks for the help. I'm a happy EVO Shift owner again.
No problem . Here to help .
Ok then. I switched to the Sprint corporate PRL. Went from full bars at home to two. I'll try it out for a bit and see if it sucks less than the normal Sprint PRL. Verizon is looking better and better even with the data caps.

Till you see your bill . Know a few Sprint people who switched to Verizon recently, about three months ago. They're crying big time . Both switched because they " get better reception " . But the Bill is crazy . One has had about $100 in overages . The other has great reception, but two weeks in he's already over his 2GB cap . No thanks to all that .
i have sprint but i put this prl on my phone and for last few days both data and voice have been better than 0001.prl, i'm in new orleans so i do not know bout other parts of country but i thought it worth posting.
cheers,
disco
Hey guys! Not to sure if its known or not as this moment, but i wanted to post this so users do no if they do not already know.
You can use straight talk on this phone with LTE running and not have it unlocked for 45 a month. The key here tho is you have to order the ATT sim card from straight talk themselves on there BYOP program. If you have any questions let me know!
What are you using for APN to get LTE to work? I have been using straight talk for about a year now with several different ATT phones.
It is a good deal, but you must realize that data isn't truly unlimited.
There is a daily limit and a monthly limit.
The limits aren't publicized by ST or tracfone so there is no way to know for sure, but the best that has been figured out is from personal experience. The daily limit is about 150mb per day, and the monthly limit is about 2gb per month. They will give you a warning, and then they cut you off totally and you lose your number. Some recently have claimed that they have started throttling instead, but I would assume the worst with Straight Talk.
You get HSPA+ speeds. I have the Skyrocket on ST and have gotten around 4mbps down and 2mbps up.

LTE wont work with straight talk. The mvno's dont allow it.
I'm currently a Straight Talk Android user (LG Optimus Q). Love the service but not the phone. I have a At&T phone that i love but need to know if anyone know how to program it (At&T Moto Atrix 4G) into a Straight Talk Pre-paid. I know they sell the sim card but is it gonna work with this phone?
I signed up for Straight Talk with my Atrix 4g last week and so far I'm loving it. Since my phone was previously on ATT, I notice absolutely no divergence in behavior or coverage. Except that now I'm not getting dinged for texts or MMS.
I'm going to move my wife's Atrix over immediately.
As long as you buy the sim for a at&t phone there is no issues. Works great. I set my girl up that way and she dont even notice its pre paid...lol...

How to make the switch
I've been reading up on this with much interest. I have an Atrix and have been on ATT for several years. I'd like to stay with ATT but want to try using straightalk. I'm confused on how to make the switch.
Would I just get the sim from straightalk.com and acitvate it? I've been grandfathered in to ATT's "unlimited" data plan. It doesn't bother me to lose that since I'd be getting basically the same thing from straightalk.
Do I have to notify ATT that I'm switching to straightalk, or is that made transparent somehow? Thanks for any input.

I was told that it would only get 3g (it only really ever got 3.5 g anyway lol) and I would just need to buy the correct sim card. You would just need to unlock it. If att will give you the unlock the phone its cool but you should just do it yourself and pick a rom you like.

Broadcasted from the Redneck-Riviera in LA using my Sammy s2 and a little duct tape.
is it possible to buy the att sim card from straight talk for my 4g t-mobile galaxy. get on the $45 UNLIMITED EVERYTHING from straight talk and get the 4g speeds. only reason i want to do this is att has 4g coverage where i live. can only get 4g with t-mobile 30 miles away where i work. att has a lot more 4g coverage. ive seen on google where this is being done with straight talk. and its cheaper too. thanks
Yes, use this to unlock your phone for other carriers http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1419468
If you don't want the trouble of installing busybox, use this instead: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1978974
But however the flash method is currently known to work on ICS only. FB is working on a fix for GB.

my phone is already unlocked. my main question is can 4g be achieved through straight talk
I would say yes because my friends S2 (T-mobile) worked for Simple Mobile. Simple Mobile goes under TracFone Wireless Inc. which owns both Simple Mobile and Straight Talk.
Or as long as they support HSDPA your good to go!
So when your getting a plan from Straight Talk make sure to ask them if they support HSDPA.

It depends on the sim card you get I have heard reports that the 4g on our phones does not work well on at&t but if you get a T-Mobile supported sim should be no problem.

This statement made me laugh. Asking them this will only create anger issues. The support people I have dealt with NEVER have a clue.
Its cool tho. People if you consider going to Straight Talk be prepared to have almost no tech support.
As posted above att will be iffy on this phone. If you are looking to get better data speeds I suggest steering away from Straight Talk there is a unknown daily data cap. And it sounds like you are looking to get faster data speeds to do something that will probably put you over the daily data cap. At that point Straight Talk will cancel your service and you have to call and ***** to get it turned back on. Hopefully they will publish something on what the daily limit is soon.

The only problem with trying to expand your 4g coverage by using a at&t sim thru straight talk is the T-Mobile 4g and At&t 4g work differently. Some of at&t 4g coverage is actually 4g lte which this phone does not support. Even their hspa+ network may be configured slightly different. Bhundven has an unlocked sgs4g and has tried his At&t sim and has reported that the 4g does not work well on it. Barely even gets 4g reception and dismal speeds at that.

So net10 has unlimited everything for $50 with CDMA devices on their new BYOD program- http://www.net10byop.com/ PagePlus and VZWPP both claim LTE devices don't work but it's merely that they require flashing. I assume it's the same for net10. Has anyone tried this?

LTE is really overkill on a phone IMO when 3g allows streaming video and there's free WiFi on every corner. Unless you're tethering who cares. I just want 3g.
If it can be done on other mvnos im sure it can be done.

i would like more info on this as well. thisi is what i heard
my friend got a call from net10 dealer. saying that net10 wants us to flash phones to net10 now. I know net10, tracfone,st ect our owned by the same person even page plus now!! page plus dealer portal will probably disappear soon or later.
well net10 cdma is now open for business to flasher offing unlimited everything for $50
the only reason i really want to make the switch because whether unlimited or not net10 advertises as unlimited data so that makes all the difference with customers. plus is $5 cheaper. anybody else heard of this? not trying to mess up vipers thread but just trying to see as we might have to had net10 to the topic. if so i want to make this transition asap plus you can top up on net10 anywhere!!! even at your local dollar store! another plus
