[Q] Email notification sounds wouldn't stick... - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone figured out the problem with changing notifications? My email notification (gmail) switches to a random mp3 file at least once a day, and I don't connect the phone to the computer in storage mode, so unavailability of the assigned sound cannot be blamed here. It's not a big deal, but rather an annoyance.
Thanks!

As noted in the stickied FAQ at the top, this is a known issue.
Connecting the phone to the computer at all causes the phone to go into a "pre-mount prepping stage" in which the OS will start separating itself from the SD card partition. I don't know if that's technically what happens, but that's what's been my observation.
Btw, this issue and some workarounds(only surefire one requires root in my experience) have been discussed in greater detail here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=882803 . Insert generic please use the search funuction comment here. /endmodimpersonation.

This is certainly the same issue as we're discussing in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=882803
Please go to this http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=13413 link and STAR the issue. We're trying to get Google's attention to fix this ASAP.
Meanwhile, a work around, if you're rooted, appears to be to put the desired sound into the /system/media/audio/(ringtones, notifications, proper sub-folder) folder.

Please help me with my Fuze!!!

I am on my third one and now my 30 days are over so I'm stuck with it and if I return it based on warranty help I get a remanufactured one but I am having some really annoying problems. I have searched these forums but frankly they are very complicated and you all seem very advanced and technical and it's very confusing. I'm hoping someone can lay out in baby steps how to help me with these issues.
1. My folders, and TF3D indicate I have a text message when there are no conversations in there it's completely empty in every folder but it still indicates I have one new text message and it won't clear with a soft reset or anything.
2. Often times my calls go straight to voicemail and do not ring on my phone.
3. I drop a lot of calls
4. Often times my phone will flash and show who is calling but not actually ring even though the sound is completely on.
5. I get a ton of errors that want to report to Microsoft especially the shell32.exe error
6. Often times when I try to connect to the internet it won't work on the Opera browser or IE browser just says can't connect.
7. Often times my email won't download and I get a message saying check in my network connections and the only way it'll fix is if I power the device off.
8. The feature where I can flip it upside down to mute it doesn't work
9. Often times I will click on one spot and it activates something I didn't click.
These are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Can someone please help me? I am begging. You can find me on Yahoo at julesthequeen06 if it'd be just easier to tell me I'm a lost cause on chat. Thank you in advance for reading this far.

Have you flashed a new rom, loaded any progams, or done anything beyond out of the box configuring? The easiest answer would be to hard reset the phone and see if that helps.
We need to know some more in-depth info
Carrier:
Rom:
If you haven't tried flashing a rom I highly suggest doing so. This can help with a lot of the problems you are having. For the Stock Rom has a lot of problems.
i wouldnt flash a new rom if its screwing up like this out of the box. what have you installed on your phone? if its doing all these these without any installed programs or mods why have you waited 30 days to do something about it? it seems to me its more of a software issue. try hard resetting and go from there. if its fine, install one program at a time and find out which is causing it. if you have att then i dont think your mute is supposed to work like that, thats a feature you have to install another program to do. i could be wrong but mine doesnt work like that.
I would do a hard reset and clear everything... i would change my time to redirect the call to voice mail to the Max: 30 seconds, I would turn off error reporting because its just a pain in the arse.. the flipping it upside down to mute is the program thats having and issue but like everyone else said what do you have installed on your phone

[Q] SD-card issues, Cyanogen Hero

Hi!
First thread, but have been on this forum a lot lately, since I finally got around to rooting and getting my Hero to run Cyanogen! If there's a similar post, I am sorry to double it, but I have not found anything that relates to my issue so far.
The problem I have is minor, yet still annoying. Whenever I get around to charging my phone, which is at least once per day, I have to use the USB port since I lost the wall-plug months ago. This in itself has never been an issue since I put Cyanogen on it. See, after I remove the cable, my SD-card won't remount automatically, causing all my photos etc. to be invisible until I manually unmount and mount it through settings.
This is especially annoying since the ringtone app I use puts the ringtone in a folder on the card whenever it's downloaded. Charging the phone thus hides the file away in a foul place, and causes me to have to redo the entire process of downloading and all that.
As a follow-up to this, I have two questions:
1) Is there any way of solving this easily, or did I do something wrong while putting Cyanogen on my phone?
2) The data that becomes inaccessible, is it still on the card taking up space, or is it deleted?
I might add that I tried turning USB debugging on and off. Also, I noticed that this issue seems to be quite spontaneous with everything except my ringtones. Photos, for example, sometimes show up no matter what, and Spotify-files are always accessible. Could it be an issue with the app?
Thanks guys!

ringtones changing to default after reboot

Just been having this issue lately where my custom ringtone and notifications change to the default after a reboot or after I connect micro usb to add files to the memory card. I cant seem to find a way to fix this. Just wondering if anyone has had this issue and how to fix it. Thanks in advance.

Hi,
When you change a ringtone,do you click apply?
Exactly the same problem i also have no council. until now. with CoreDroid 2.6 i had it not, only with v2.7 and v3.0.
I have the exact same problem, I had some custom ringtones and suddenly for no reason started switching back to default. So I finally just did a factory reset now everything's back to normal.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
I may have found the issue with mine. I recently started using an app called headset droid. Once I uninstalled the app most of my issue is gone now. My ringtones and notifications no longer reset when I reboot. They do still reset if if I connect my phone via micro USB and add transfer things to my memory card. I will try resetting my phone and reflashing my rom next to see if that solves the problem completely.
Solution for rooted user but please help for non-rooted
To start off I do not have my phone rooted, although I am thinking about it lol.
My ringtones and notifications changed every time I restart my phone. What I have tried is to change the ringtones and notifications folder location. It basically started right after I received the T-Mobile update software number 1.50.531.1
sdcard(root)/notifications
sdcard(root)/ringtones
and
sdcard(root)/media/audio/notifications
sdcard(root)/media/audio/ringtones
all the above methods work in the sense that the phone recognized the ringtones but every time I restart the phone it changes the ringtone and notification back to defaults.
I have searched for a solution the closest thing I have found was located here: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=13413
The conclusion is to gain root access and move the ringtones and notification to the phone's internal system folder. Since I do not want to root my phone, is there a method to gain permission to move files to the system folder?
I really want to solve this problem so please let me know if there is a solution
Thanks from a noob
I fixed my issue by clearing the cache. I downloaded app called "app cache cleaner" than I cleared the rosie cache and boom it works woot
Anyone got an answer?

Try adding your phone ringtone / notification sound this way
Settings-sound-phone ringtone-menu soft key-more ringtones-add ringtone
Then select the ringtone.
Also the similar way for notification sound..
This way you might not lose your custom ringtones when rebooted

That's how I assign them. I don't have the issue of losing them when rebooting, but I do have problems when I've connected my phone as a mass storage device as with the SD card unmounted (so it can be accessed by the PC) the phone can no longer see my ringtone/notification sounds.
Annoyingly downloading ringtones from HTC doesn't save them to the phone memory.

Hi, I had this issue after I installed Beats.
I found that the problem was linked to /system/app/com.htc.sdm.apk
This is a soundset profile which was defaulting tones.
I deleted this file, rebooted and all was fine!
Hope this helps

Is that a solution which can be used without rooting?
I have tried to report this to HTC as a bug, but cannot find the details. There are many links on this and similar sites which all go to "Whoops we cannot find that site, please one of the below" [sic] and there is nothing below. When I tried to access support direction the only countries I could choose from were USA or Canada. Can anyone direct me to how to report this as a bug for a UK user? They shouldn't be requiring us to root just so that we don't have all our ringtones defaulted every time we connect the phone to a PC, that's about 20 times a day! Particularly important for me rather than just nigglingly annoying as I'm profoundly deaf in some frequencies, I literally cannot hear some of the ring tones, I need to input ones I can tell the phone is ringing!
It's not a HTC issue, it's a gingerbread/ics issue.
Although HTC could fix it I suppose by releasing an app that allows you to copy ringtones to the phone memory.

No, it isn't!
Tell you what.... Just S-OFF & root your phone and install a custom ROM.
Otherwise, learn to live with the crappy software that HTC release and stop moaning about it.
Thanks

I feel that I need to disagree.
If it was an OS issue then every ROM on every phone would suffer from the same problem.
This problem happens for various reasons on various ROMs.
HTC replace a lot of the AOSP programs with thier own and it's less than perfect and can cause this issue - they could release a patch but they are not always speedy on the releases!
I remember someone creating a Sound profile and then deleting it - which solved their problem?!

The Galaxy Nexus also suffers from resetting ringtones etc when the SD card has been unmounted, there's a bug report a mile long with Google about it.
There should be an easy fix, ie two sound config files, one for when the SD card is present and the other for when it's not, or the set as ringtone/notification function could copy the file to the internal memory.
Why load a flakey unfinished ROM when O2 provide one that fast and trouble free?
I was hoping there'd be a way of accessing the internal memory from a PC via developer tools.

As I stated - "Various ROMs" - BUT NOT ALL - So it can't be the fault of the base AOSP but rather modifications done by Manufacurers or Providers (3 is the worst for customising)!
Not all ROMs are flakey or unfurnished and you have the options to customise them a lot more to your own personal style - Most providers add bloatware which slows the device down which a lot of people don't want (The only settings I need are for my APN)!
You can access internal memory via adb - but modifying it requires you to be rooted.
There is a fallback ringtone found within framework-res.apk which the device will use if it can't find any tones at all but no different configs for SD in/out (Nice idea though!) but copying to the internal memory would still require root!
This is where I benefit from a custom rom - If I don't like one then I choose another, or I patch the problem! (Or, more often then not, I just make my own)
Try setting up a custom sound set, what rom and mods do you have

Thing is, with O2 they don't add bloat and I'm happy with their ROM, it's fast (ICS seems much faster than GB) and stable, which I guess we're lucky in that
I've set up a new sound set and tomorrow I'll be adding vids to watch on the train into London so will see how it goes.
Interesting though how it affects a Nexus device which I always thought was bare bones Android.

[Q] Screen On with "USB Device Disconnected"

My Galaxy Tab 7.7 turns on every few minutes and displays a message for a moment in the lower right corner. The message is "USB Device Disconnected".
The device is not connected to any USB device.
This has been happening for many weeks now.
I've tried to turn the USB Debug option on but that didn't change anything.
I have not rooted the device.
I have not flashed the device.
I am running only stock applications from the market.
Does anyone else have this issue?
It's maddening because the device constantly turns itself on. At night I either remove it from my bedroom (the display lights up the room when it comes on) or turn the device upside down on the table so I can't see it when it comes on.
yes, i have the same issue
no idea what the reason is
Same issue.
One Added Note
One item to add...
It appears that if the unit is charging it does not have this problem. This makes logical sense as the USB is connected, albeit to the wall outlet.
I'm going to wait until ICS - which is due here in Thailand at the end of this month. If that doesn't fix it I will contact Samsung.
Living here in Asia makes taking things back for repair very difficult as the many small but authorized vendors aren't set up for this, the language barrier adds heavily to the issue, and finding an English speaking official Samsung office is quite difficult.
I will monitor the forum to see if a fix arrives before my software update.
Thanks everyone!
Same problem here. When this happen for me the mobile network disconnects, I am thinking that it may be some problem with the mobile network card...
When connected to wifi this is not visible although i might get the usb message.
But on 3g i loose all connection sometimes only for a second but sometimes for up to a couple of minutes...

Update
I wanted to add some more information...
I happened to remove my carrier's SIM a week ago and the "USB device disconnect" error continues at the same rate.
I guess my next question is how do you contact Samsung support?
Do they have a Tablet support phone number?
I don't care which country the support line is located within, as long as it's English-speaker focused.
bump
very annoying to lose mobile network all the time
I changed Galaxy Tab 7.7 (3G Version) three times, all three tablets had same problem.... any idea to fix it?
I think the problem gets worse if the tablets not been rebooted for a while.
But after reboot I think mine is a bit more stable.
How is it for the rest of you?
---------- Post added at 10:50 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:49 PM ----------
I also find it weird that you have the same problem with three tablets, but at the same time it seems that very few of us are affected???
I called Samsung and they said they never have complaints on this issue.... anyway, i got three devices from different stores have the same problem.. I think the issue is the rom. That problem hopefully can be solved after ICS upgrade...
Same problem; not so often but it happens once in a while.
I don't know if it is causing the instability that I have noticed with this device but it is kinda weird.
Do you have micro SD card plugged into the device? I read some other forums and some people removed the micro SD card, the issue resolved afterward.
I just removed the micro SD card, I will let you guys know if the issue can be fixed or not soon...

Solved
I think all this happens because of Kies software. It's a monster, I will never use it any more. Even uninstlling may not help. Better use MobilEdit instead.
Anyway, I found solution in registry. So, try this:
Before starting, disconnect all usb devices from PC
1. Open Windows registry editor
2. Open key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Enum\USB
3. Press CTRL+F and search in data value your device name (egz. Samsung)
4. Delete all key branches with name started: Vid_*** where your device will be found (You may have to enable permissions first).
Reconnect device. That's all
i have the same 'problem' but..., never used Kies software
Anyway, solution is in the registry. Evidently some usb drivers are conflicting.
Deleting those Vid_*** keys simply resets usb drivers on particular port.
You can check your phone on another computer without driver

I don't see how this has anything to do with the problem.
The USB device issue is happening on the tablet, not on the PC. How does removing USB drivers from my PC fix the tablet issue?

Same problem with GSM version. Could someone try log at the logs when/after it have happend? Dmesg and logcat. Will also try to do it myself.
same issue here. Never used kies before. I'm not sure if it has something to do with interfering gadgets near the tab.
Strange thing some (or most) people dont notice that bug(?). I tried several 7.7's now and can confirm that this looks like rom issue as every 7.7 has that problem. It really annoys me, escpecially combined with the battery status screen-on bug. When battery is lower than 10% screen turns on like every 2 minutes or so... Good thing to save remaining battery
Oh and I never used Kies too. Didn't even install it yet.

[Q] Internet Explorer problem

Hi everyone,
I have a problem with Internet Explorer on my HD7
Since yesterday, Internet Explorer refuses to open from the start screen or Apps list. Clicking on web links in emails does not work, clicking on pinned web pages does not work. Live tiles, Emails, RSS feeds, texts, Phone calls etc. work as expected. I have downloaded several third party browsers which work as expected.
I have checked using 3G and Wifi connections, and soft reset multiple times to no avail
I have searched and have not seen anyone else reporting this problem which leads me to suspect it's a device specific software problem. I was following my normal morning routine yesterday, reading the emails with new and updated posts from XDA when it suddenly stopped opening the links in the emails. I tried opening up Internet Explorer and this too failed. The animation transition starts to take place when pushing the I.E. tile, and then it comes back to the start screen.
I am running 7720 and have not played around with the phone or changed anything to cause this problem.
Does anyone have any suggestions or thoughts before I go ahead and press the "Reset your phone" button ??
Thanks in advance,
Garrickus
Work around
Hi,
Got the same problem with no available solution till now.
I just have a workaround for you, disable in settings the "open links in new tab" and you should be able to use IE9 again afterwards.
Tabs will not work though.
I even read somewhere that hard reseting device will not solve the problem !!??
Do it or not and tell me if you find something.
Regards,
Thomas
Thanks

I can confirm your solution does indeed work as you describe, and yes, tabs are now broken
I'm curious as to your firmware version and operator, as there may be a link ?
You say you read "somewhere" that hard resetting the phone doesn't fix the problem , (I haven't as yet done so myself, as I'm currently compiling word docs of Internet Explorer favourites etc. and uploading them to Skydrive so I can restore them later ) which implies someone else has also encountered this problem ?
If a hard reset doesn't work for me (I'm waiting on the weekend to do this as it'll probably take hours ) then I'm seriously thinking of upgrading the sdhc card to a 32gb one and flashing a custom rom
I'll keep you updated.
And once again, thank you for taking the time to reply , with well over a hundred views, I was beginning to think I was invisible
Garrickus
i would flash a custom rom (you have the requirements), its easy to do (just search for it) and the advantages of it are great. you would never want to go back to an official rom again.
I haven't heard of this problem before, and don't have a direct fix - I'd need to examine your phones in some detail to do so.
However, if you have a full-unlocked phone, or you have WP7 Root Tools, I'm releasing an app that can configure your phone to use a third-party app as the default beowser (on my phone, I'm currently using IE+, for example). There are some caveats - not all browsers will be supported, and not all of IE's features work on third-party browsers - but it should work to let you open links sent in emails or SMS or apps. They have tabs too (in fact, IE+ has better tab management than IE9; one reason I use it).
Glad to see it partially solved your problem ;-)
My device is a Samsung Omnia 7 with latest firmware and mango installed (do not have the disapearing keyboard fix).
I suspect either windowbreak interop unlock method or windows phone manager to be the culprit with our tabs problem. Are you interop unlocked ? Have you installed Windows Phone Manager ? Have you sideloaded any app ?

Funnily enough, I hadn't heard of this problem either, before it manifested itself on my phone so it can't be widespread.
I'd love to allow you (you Windows Phone Guru ) access to my phone, if it would help me and the community, but, it's my main device and your too far away to visit
I have a stock phone so I doubt there is any kind of dump or something I can do to provide more clarification on the problem, but it's very real and very annoying
I had a quick search for "IE+" in the marketplace, but didn't see it. Could you provide a link please ? Or did you sideload it ?
If the hard reset doesn't work, my carrier has said they will swop it out for a refurbished unit, so I have a couple of options.
If I get my act together by the weekend, I might upload a video of the problem to YouTube for information purposes.
Also, my phone has been exhibiting some strangeness for a while now. Occasionally freezing up, then unfreezing itself. Internet Explorer freezing when the loading bar reaches 4/5's distance, and taking ages to finish loading. Some tiles (third party only) losing their images but not the text, or backing out of an app to the Start screen resulting in all the tiles being empty for a few seconds before filling in. Start screen flashing green and crackly looking. None of them particularly bothered me too much till now.
I'll keep you all posted.

Yes, thank you. I was beginning to go mad with it lol.
I too am running Mango without the disappearing keyboard fix, but I am not windows broken, iterop or any other kind of unlock, or used any kind of programs other than Zune, so we don't have that in common I'm afraid.
Thanks anyway

IE+ is being published to the Marketplace this week, I think. There's a pre-release build of it available on this forum, but I'm not sure if that version supports the required behavior for be-the-default-browser support. I'm looking at other apps too (requires decompiling them, unless I can get a chance to talk to the developer, but that's usually easy).
However, if your phone isn't interop-unlocked, you wouldn't be able to use the switcher anyhow, though. It requires TCB (or "root") permissions, because it needs to write to the registry. It's possible to interop-unlock your phone (I have an HD7 myself), but you'd need to downgrade the firmware first.
The list of bugs you're experienced sounds like it *might* actually be some kind of defective hardware. The usual problem is the internal microSD card that is used for storage on the phone being defective or coming loose. There are a few other possibilities too, though. Unfortunately, trying to fix them yourself is likely to void your warranty, with no guarantee of success.
Video uploaded to Youtube
Hi all,
So my problem persists, and I am due to hard reset the phone to see if that solves the issue in the next couple of days. Before I do so however, I have uploaded a video showing the problem to Youtube for information purposes.
Lets see if anyone else is having the same problem, and if a solution exists.
Here's the link to the video

If the hard reset doesn't work, my carrier have said they will swop the unit for a refurbished one. Does anyone have any experiences of this ? Are they like new ? Or beaten up a bit ?

More people reporting the problem on Microsoft answers forum
Hi everyone,
I checked the Microsoft answers forum and it seems Others are reporting the issue as well
I counted at least half a dozen posts with the same problem as myself here
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...one&CurrentScope.Filter=&askingquestion=false
So far, the only advice offered is to hard reset the phone, with some users reporting this solved their issue. One user reported that although it solved their issue, now their phone tile doesn't work

After hard reset
Hey everyone,
So I hard reset my phone on Thursday
and as a result, Internet Explorer now works again as it should
I decided not to restore a backup, and set up the phone manually (which took about 3 hours ).
A couple of things I've noticed since -
Battery life seems massively improved , now reporting over a days use on a full battery. I'll keep an eye on this as before I was only getting about 14 hours.
Another thing I've noticed is the keyboard. Now when I type, it highlights the word it thinks I want to use in bold, and it definitely didn't do that before
I'll keep you all posted on how things go over the next couple of weeks, if any of the problems I reported show up again, but, fingers crossed, it's all good for now, and loving my phone again.
Thanks for all your input.

Have a question... Does Hard resetting the device keep the os updates ?? (Mango, etc..) Or do you have to apply them again afterwards ?
Thanks for your answer

Yes it does.
Thanks !! Another and last question, does hard resetting keep the phone windowbreak interop unlocked ?

Too bad. I have this problem too. Last night after connect to public wi-fi and enter username & password in automatic IE pop-up.
You can't open IE if your setting of "Open links from other apps in" is "A new tab". If change this settings to "The current tab" you can open multi-IE for multi-tab but can't use normal tab.
I think I will HR my device too.

No, interop unlocked will go away.
I am facing similar issue. I guess I know when it started (but not sure about it)
I had opened Google Search app. I was searching some images. In results displayed, I clicked 1 imgage. It opened Internet Explorer. When I tried to open "Tab" from Menu to close tab and exit IE, IE was simply not getting close and it was opening continously. I finally pressed Power button to switch off phone. After phone was restarted, I observed that while internet explorer is open and I open the tabs, it shows absolutely nothing, it doesn't show the tab for the page that is currently open or none of the other tabs that are open. Rather it shows Blank page with symbol to add new tab. But even new tab is not getting added. I tried several reboot on phone but somehow "Tab" thing is broken. I am also having feeling that Internet Explorer running in the backround that will not close even after a restart.
I dont want to Hard Rest Phone, but I think its only Solution for now. Hope MS fix this issue in WP7.8.
