[UPDATE 3] Why isnt my Twitter Working, what does it mean & what can I do? [See Here]
Ok guys,
Many of you have or are finding out (depending on how much of a twit-a-holic you are) that you are having problems accessing twitter on various clients, inc HTC Peep, Motweets etc.
Sites around the web were getting splashed with a mysterious dialog Tuesday, thanks to a change in the way Twitter handles user authentication.
It states that a username and password are being requested by Twitter, with the unhelpful message, “Twitter API.” The same dialog has been spotted on ReadWriteWeb and even on Twitter’s own website.
In addition, users of some Twitter apps, including Twitter’s own Tweetie and BlackBerry apps, Tweetdeck and Twitterrific and HTC Peep have complained of Twitter login problems.
In the case of the website dialog, entering your username and password doesn’t do anything useful, and won’t make the dialog box go away. Indeed, it will often reappear several times during a session.
The cause of the troubl is a change in the way Twitter handles user authentication for remote sites and programs. Instead of giving a Facebook app your Twitter username and password, for instance, Twitter now requires the app use a protocol known as OAuth to hand you off to Twitter’s website. Once you’ve authorized Twitter to share your information with the other site or app, it hands a token back to that app, and the two can share information with each other.
The new, OAuth-based method is more secure and ultimately more reliable (for instance, you don’t have to update every Twitter app you use whenever you change your Twitter password).
However, now that Twitter has switched, programs and sites using the old authentication method are not working properly.
That includes websites using Twitter widgets with older code. These widgets, which embed the latest tweets from specific Twitter users, appear to rely on the old authentication method.
The solution should be simply to upgrade if possible. If you have old widget code on your website, go to Twitter.com and get a new widget embed code. Similarly, if you’re using a Twitter app that’s having login problems, the solution is almost certainly to upgrade to the latest version. Twitterrific’s developers, for instance, have spent the day urging the app’s many users to upgrade. Developers have known about the authentication switch for months now, and most have been able to release updated versions of their software that works properly with the new OAuth system.
People using HTC Peep have been getting the error message "incorrect username or password" whilst trying to post or update, which is even more frustrating when some other apps on the iphone for example work perfectly well.
This is what Twitter blog has to say : http://blog.twitter.com/2010/08/twitter-applications-and-oauth.html
Cool smart phone tweeted this today as word finally gets around : http://www.coolsmartphone.com/news6158.html
So, when will HTC be releasing a hotfix for Peep? Answer is I dont honestly know. Lots of people inc myself have been asking HTC exactly this but they arent giving anything away at the moment, but updates will be posted here.
If you guys hear anything, please feel free to post your info here.
Remember, try and be patient, HTC have only had 8 months to sort this out.........
Cheers.
Thanks timmy,
Great idea

UPDATE 2
Got this email from twitter today as im sure many of you did too..........
Hi @timmymarsh,
Over the coming weeks, we will be making two important updates that will impact how you interact with Twitter applications. We are sending this notice to all Twitter users to make sure you are aware of these changes.
What are applications?
There are over 250,000 applications built using the Twitter API. To use most applications, you first authorize the application to access your Twitter account, after which you can use it to read and post Tweets, discover new users and more. Applications come in many varieties, including desktop applications like TweetDeck, Seesmic, or EchoFon, websites such as TweetMeme, fflick, or Topsy, or mobile applications such as Twitter for iPhone, Twitter for Blackberry, or Foursquare.
Update 1: New authorization rules for applications
Starting August 31, all applications will be required to use “OAuth” to access your Twitter account.
What's OAuth?
OAuth is a technology that enables applications to access Twitter on your behalf with your approval without asking you directly for your password.
Desktop and mobile applications may still ask for your password once, but after that request, they are required to use OAuth in order to access your timeline or allow you to tweet.
What does this mean for me?
Applications are no longer allowed to store your password.
If you change your password, the applications will continue to work.
Some applications you have been using may require you to reauthorize them or may stop functioning at the time of this change.
All applications you have authorized will be listed at http://twitter.com/settings/connections.
You can revoke access to any application at any time from the list.
Update 2: t.co URL wrapping
In the coming weeks, we will be expanding the roll-out of our link wrapping service t.co, which wraps links in Tweets with a new, simplified link. Wrapped links are displayed in a way that is easier to read, with the actual domain and part of the URL showing, so that you know what you are clicking on. When you click on a wrapped link, your request will pass through the Twitter service to check if the destination site is known to contain malware, and we then will forward you on to the destination URL. All of that should happen in an instant.
You will start seeing these links on certain accounts that have opted-in to the service; we expect to roll this out to all users by the end of the year. When this happens, all links shared on Twitter.com or third-party apps will be wrapped with a t.co URL.
What does this mean for me?
A really long link such as http://www.amazon.com/Delivering-Happiness-Profits-Passion-Purpose/dp/0446563048 might be wrapped as http://t.co/DRo0trj for display on SMS, but it could be displayed to web or application users as amazon.com/Delivering- or as the whole URL or page title.
You will start seeing links in a way that removes the obscurity of shortened links and lets you know where each link will take you.
When you click on these links from Twitter.com or a Twitter application, Twitter will log that click. We hope to use this data to provide better and more relevant content to you over time.
Thanks for reading this important update. Come and check what's new at http://twitter.com.
Thanks,
The Twitter Team

Since July, I've been eagerly awaiting the ability to video chat with friends using google's Talk and today I read that the Google+ android app has added the ability to to start a "hangout" (Google+ videochat with more than one friend at once).
Are we non-rooted MyTouch 4G users forever in the "out" crowd on this because google won't give us a basic video chat feature for their Talk app? I mean c'mon already, we are at Android 2.3.4 on this wonderful lil powerhouse of a phone with front facing cam, and I don't see any video support for google apps yet....
... have I missed something?
... or is this T-Mobile locking us out of this functionality?

You've missed the ability to read.
From http://www.androidcentral.com/google-app-set-receive-big-update-will-now-allow-you-initiate-hangouts
The Google+ Android app has continued to evolve at a rapid pace. Back in September, Google added the functionality to be able to join a Hangout from any Android phone running Android 2.3 and up. One of the biggest frustrations, however, was not being able to initiative a Hangout from your mobile device. Google has finally brought that ability to the app by allowing you to start a Hangout from Messenger. If you've started a a Messenger group, you'll now see a camera icon that will initiate a Hangout with a simple tap.
Great features just keep coming. Google announced on their blog post that the app will update in the next few days, so keep your eyes out. They also announced that similar functionality will be brought to iOS so you'll be able to Hangout with your family and friends even if they have iPhones and iPads.
If you don't yet have the Google+ app, please find links to the free app after the break.

Neither rude nor childish. What was irresponsible was posting a question that has been clearly answered by the Developers themselves.
I never claim to be nice, i just claim to be honest.
edit :
You have no clue how i posted that. If you took it as insulting the problem lies with you. You can ask anyone of the other members here. I am never insulting or demeaning to any of the members. It's pointless to be rude to people that you've/i've/we've never met.
What I read yesterday is that the Google+ app already had the ability to join a hangout in progress, but that the new app being released adds the ability to start a hangout.
Now, I don't think the Glacier ever had the ability to do video chat with google apps. But, after reading yesterday that the Google+ app has already had the ability to join a hangout, I've tried joining an existing hangout with my google+ app but could not find a way to do so. My app is up to date via the Market, but that can be difficult to verify since the market lists the version as being device dependent (and so we could be left out of the latest versions), and since we never could do video with the Talk app., I kinda wonder if I'm chasing my tail here or if video DOES work for us now.
So, has anybody with a non-rooted MyTouch 4G had any success in video chatting with Google+, or have we been left out of having this ability?

And yes, please understand before you insult me again, that I HAVE been searching this forum for these answers (by my ability to read). I'm asking for someone to explain how this is done; not just confirm that they know someone else that did it... Cease the fight people. We must unite.
If I remember correctly I have successfully joined a hangout using the stock ROM, but it was definitely rooted. I know I've used CM7 to hangout. Decent feed as long as you're on wifi, the mic is a little sensitive though and gives some feedback, esp if you're in a room with someone else in the same hangout.

The information that was highlighted in GIANT RED LETTERS is about the release of a feature to INITIATE a video chat, BUT, the google+ app has allowed JOINING a video chat for a while now. Here, let me repost what information I already read before starting this post:
"Back in September, Google added the functionality to be able to join a Hangout from any Android phone running Android 2.3 and up. One of the biggest frustrations, however, was not being able to initiative a Hangout from your mobile device."
SEPTEMBER! this ability has been around since September. And yet I haven't seen or heard of it working with our phones this is why I posted a thread.
Regardless of the latest release, it seems that a non-rooted MyTouch 4G cant do video chat with the google+ app., nor could it do it with the Talk app. I would like to know if anyone has had success with making video chat work with google apps on a non-rooted MyTouch 4G.
But, it looks like you guys didn't read my questions -- those are the sentences with the question marks at the end. I quoted them above, but I'll try to make them simpler to understand. (Some of you senior users need to just move on if you see something that annoys you, instead of attack dogging people because you don't like or understand the way a question was posed.)
Has anybody with a non-rooted MyTouch 4G had any success with video chat for the Talk app or the Google+ app?
If no...
Is this because Google left out this capability with the Talk app?
Is this because T-Mobile has locked out these features?
And this is implied:
If yes...
How do we make video chat for the Talk app work on a non-rooted MyTouch 4G?
How do we make video chat for the Google+ app work on a non-rooted MyTouch 4G?
I guess I could ask one more question:
Does anybody have a non-rooted MyTouch 4G that can answer these questions based on experience?
I'm sure many XDA members who own HTC phones also have access to elevate. While this thread is not intended to expose any confidential information related to the HTC program, it IS intented for us (HTC users on Elevate) to group and support each others' ideas if you think they're useful.
//////////////////////
What this thread IS:
* A place where fellow XDA users with Elevate access can post their ideas, discuss them and help each other out with "likes" in order to raise the idea's visibility on HTC's radar.
* Anyone can contribute to an existing discussion (in this thread) and if it's supported by a lot of voices, one of us will promote it as a new "idea" on Elevate.
////////////////////////////
What this thread is NOT:
* A way to request information about Elevate itself, such as "how to get in?" or "who do i contact inside HTC for this and that?"
* A place to bash / flame / troll about anything HTC / Android or Elevate related
* A place to beg for or release content which is considered inside HTC confidential information.
Any deviations from common sense (language and content-wise) will not be tolerated.
Thanks and looking forward to your contribution!

which one would that be? give at least the idea name...
I'll start with mine:
"Contact image size on future htcsense.com"
When the replacement portal will be released, it would be good to have an online cloud-based way to sync contacts, along with support for hi-def (720p+) contact images.
This is one of the oldest Android bugs on record (actually a Contacts/Mail team issue) and we're forced to sync Gmail Contacts once you set up a google contact on any Android phone. If we can use htcsense.com (or whatever's gonna be called whenever released) as an alternative to Gmail Contacts it would be awesome!
30FPS and higher bitrate video support (OneX/S specific)
This one is pretty easy to figure out....24FPS and 10mbps don't do the OneX justice. The TF300 which is a Tegra3 tablet can do 29FPS and 18mbps with no issues, so it's not a HW limitation.
Below is a format that should be used as an example of how a rom thread should look. It doesnt have to be exact. I suggest that you stay creative and use all the features in the advanced panel when creating a thread.
1. Name of rom, team, etc
2. Introduction
3. Changelog in code or php tags
4. What's included in the rom in the (apps, tweaks, scripts, addons, mods) in code of php tags
5. What works/what doesn't work in code or php tags
6. Credits (Users name-with link to (profile/github/or thread u got tweak from embedded), and what they did to help you)
7. Screenshots (2-10 different screenshots of different aspects of rom)
8. Kernel with either link to thread you got it from or github (if stock sense or cm please state that and that is enough)
9. Instructions on how to install the rom (also if special instruction for a2sd or beats audio...etc)
10. Do's and Don'ts of the rom
11. Questions & Answers section (I find this helpful to write out asked questions with solutions at the bottom of the op. I find that it cuts down on the question being asked a million times)
12. Finally the dl link
13. Additional add-ons (this can go into first post or reserved posts after)
I find the embedded link looks and feels better throughout the op if possible.
All sections should have a header with enlarged text and spaced out so people can read it easily.
I am hoping that this helps to make this section a little cleaner and easier. enjoy
The way I look at this is that it takes US weeks/days/hours to make these roms....we can take the time out to make sure that the op looks professional and clean
Also Make sure the op is fully ready before posting. I know we all get excited to release a rom but stating that half the stuff will be updated as time permits just shows that you are lazy and in a hurry which doesnt look good cause if thats the case then how does your rom run....
No posting a a rom thread without a DL link either
Thanks Papa Smurf151 i think everyone who is getting ready to post a rom should be redirected here!
sorry if im not allowed to post here, so please delete my comment if needed
i left this open for feedback

I think what Papa Smurf outlined in the OP is more then enough and it covers the basics while keeping the majority of the threads uniformed or at least try to
I also don't think we should start being over critical here and require individuals that start threads in the development section to add labels like Alpha, Beta, MC, RC or whatever.
I understand that having labels would make things a whole lot easier for the user BUT it also doesn't encourage the user to read about what he or she flashes onto their phone.
I don't know how many times I've seen a user complain and harass developers over something that was clearly their (the user) fault because they didn't read the OP. They saw fancy screenshots and saw the download link and either ended up bricking their phone or causing their phone to turn into a hot pocket...lol
Not trying to tell people how to do their job BUT I think we should encourage users to read/search more not shortcut things for users.

See I assumed this was common sense and ROMs that are missing a lot of these details, I don't give the time of day too so those ROMs don't matter to me. Because in my mind all the good ROM's out there already follow this in some way shape or form.
I appreciate what you did but I don't see why we need it is all.
As long as these are only guidelines and not enforceable rules, I agree with them. But I wouldn't agree with deleting/locking threads that fail to follow these guidelines; that would send the wrong message to developers.

Rom threads will never be locked or deleted for not following these guidelines. I would hope devs would embrace them and if a fellow dev isn't then I would hope someone would point them here and try to help them. Most rom devs want to have a nice looking op. But some of them are new and don't know better or are very young and don't know better. This just helps to give structure that they can refer to and say oh yeah maybe I should have that or this.

See I assumed this was common sense and ROMs that are missing a lot of these details, I don't give the time of day too so those ROMs don't matter to me. Because in my mind all the good ROM's out there already follow this in some way shape or form.
I appreciate what you did but I don't see why we need it is all.

What?
As a frequent Skype user on my phone, I want to know what my contacts are up to but it seems tha Microsoft has taken away our ability to see whether a contact's status is set to 'do not disturb' or 'away'. Instead of seeing the above mentioned statuses, we just see the contact as 'offline'.
I thought I would make this little petition and gather some signatures where we can then later on send it to the Skype development team and hopefully they will do the changes in their next version.
If you feel the same as I do, then you can sign the petition here:

P.S. I was not sure where exactly to post this so the mods can move it to the appropriate board.

Interesting. I also use skype each day (not living with my family ATM, work obligations), but missed this statuses issue. Thx for highlighting this.
