New Skype beta released! Now supports Smartphone :)

Skype just gave us an early Christmas present and released 2.2 beta for Windows Mobile Pocket PC & Smartphones!
It's been a long time coming, but looks really nice... I've noticed quite a few changes already.

So, in addition to supporting a lot more devices, it has a nice new today screen plugin too. Now, you can change your presence and view notifications (missed calls, chats and contact requests) all without leaving the today screen!

Does that version of Skype work well on this phone?
Could i use that phone as a Skype phone that will be turned on and connected to WLAN all the day long for days/weeks/months?

I have a question: does Skype really work smoothly for anyone with Tornado?
I have overclocked it to 240MHz, but even on a good wifi connection it works more like walkie talkie - one side can talk, then wait at least a second, then other side can talk, and it still is of very low quality, IMHO because of lack of CPU power on Tornado.
I really needed to use Skype when I was abroad, to save on telephone fees, but I wasn't able to tell a moderately complicated sentence in two minutes, even if i almost shouted loudly, the other party couldn't understand.
So - am I only one with this experience, or Tornado just doesn't have power to use Skype, but everyone likes to boast about how OK is it (because they never really needed to make important call over it)??

Honestly Skype for Windows Mobile is toutes proportions gardees even more bloated than Skype for Windows. Please,try Fring - it is far less bloated plus you can use alternative networks too.

Well dude there is nothing as such tht tornado's CPU is under powered to support Skype.. well i used it while connecting it to ma PC n using my DSL bandwidth to make calls from it.. well it works perfect as if we are usin skype on Pc overall wht matters is the kind of bandwidth you are gettin on ur WiFi network or ur service provider... Plus i hav not even Overclocked ma Cingular 2125 (HTC Tornado) for usin skype of any other service..

Thank you for the Fring, I tried it in the past, but it had quite rough edges especially considering UI, so I decided to wait till it stops looking like beta. I will try it.

Good to hear that it works for you, i'll try to find out why it doesn't for me - i should be ok at least at home on 512kbps wifi, but i'm not, even 2m from the AP...

Fring is such a half-assed app

Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't work. I'm talking about the skype video chat feature with a PC. So frustrated.

I tried it for the first time today and I have to agree. It wasn't showing friends on Google Talk that were online in the real app. And it wouldn't show anyone online in Skype. And on top of that, it wouldn't do calls between Gtalk clients or Skype either, it just kept dialing and disconnecting.
I uninstalled it, it's obviously junk.

I haven't have any problems with it yet (I've only used it a handful of times), I would not complain anyway.
It's a free app and it's being run on a phone released less than a month ago.
Time will help.

While it does have It's quirks when it does work it nor bad

No offense to op. impo, i think its disrepectful to the devs working hard to make apps or this app in particular, to post a thread just to rag on their work, which is obviously intended to improve OUR user experience. Android is indeed open source and if i want better, i am more than welcome to write up something myself.....to improve the app a pm containing your problems in detail wouldve probably been a bit more considerate, and a proper way to handle this issue. Good luck with future app flamings

i think this thread is useless. fring works for me perfectly. video chat does go down but that is probably because of the fact that qik is so garbage and EVERYONE is trying to use fring all of a sudden. their servers were probably not ready for the massive onslaught of the EVO. I feel like i do have the right to bag on Qik because they are supported by Sprint and all their $$$ and their video quality is nowhere near as good as fring.

right on. unlike other free or lite programs, this one doesn't include ads and it works fine for me. i've no complaints, and even if i did, no loss, it's free. maybe you should get an iphone...oh scratch that. steve-o looked like he was frustrated when he called his boyfriend, ives. plus it only does iphone to iphone on wifi.

Agreed.. Qik has been a 100% letdown.. Sprint should remove their affiliation and offer better alternatives. The verification system for Qik is lame, the constant updates in the last week has been lame.. Overall a garbage experience.

fring is ok, aside from that i keep seeing MagnusRagnarok posting with those letters and size that suck, and i think his the only one who does it, and everytime i see those letters i skip his post i have seriously never read what he has to say, its disturbing.

Works quite well for me (Fring) and I use it all the time. Qik? Total POS. I've never been able to use is successfully, and even if it I did, I can only call other Evo's? GMAFB Sounds like Apple's FaceTime crap.
+100 Fring - combines all of my "chat" and video conference apps into one, and does it on my cell phone! I video conference with people on PC's all the time with Fring. Sure, the quality isn't HD or anything, but... do I have to say it again? I CAN DO IT - ON MY CELL PHONE! LOL
While I'm repeating myself... Qik can KMA. Sprint should put their development money into Fring... its a lot farther along, and those guys deserve a big break.

WTF is up with Fring ???? been having problems with it for like the last 30 minutes... cant log in.. tried changing password... even tried it from a pc and no dice

It works for me, pretty flawless too. Fring > Qik

I don't like how fring looks. I tried video calls on the EVO and there is so much white space, it makes it look cheap and ugly. I wish you could drag video windows around or make them full screen.

I just did an EvO to iPhone video with my friend and i had to keep the volume about half way, otherwise he sounds distorted on my end. Kind of sounds like my speaker is blown(its not) if i raise the volume passed the half way point. I could hear him clearly though. There were times where he said he couldn't hear me at all and he said he had his volume all the way up. I hope these are lil bugs that get fixed. Otherwise, it's pretty good

Amen to that. Qik is garbage. I can't see anyone putting that app over fring. More options and IMHO better interface.

i think fring removed skype due to verizon's contract with skype...i.e. no more video skype from fring!

Skype 3.0 for Android?

Apparently, this is the update for video calling. Any idea of when this will come out for android? Was released for Iphone yesterday...

Try it! Im Lovin it so far...if it wouldnt be that laggy

Seeing how Skype is hiring more mobile developers, we'll probably see cross platform skype next year. If they can get their act together though.

I think google might beat em to the finish line with this feature supposedly coming in honeycomb.

[Q] Best Video chat software?

Currently running TnT lite 5.0.1 on my ViewSonic G tablet and have tried Qik (the version designed for the galaxy tab), but the sound didn't work. Tried fring, but the whole app just made funny noises and didn't work. Also tried Tango, but the app didn't recognize a phone number, so it wouldn't let me use the software with my tablet. All tests were done with the gf who has an HTC EVO, stock.
Has anyone had any luck with any specific combination of ROM's and apps? Or do you know of another app that would be best?
Notice to SKYPE... you're expected to be the industry leader here, so wtf are you doing so far behind the curve on mobile video chat???

Been wondering about this myself. I don't understand why nobody is making a big deal out of this. What's the point of having a front facing camera if there ain't no video chatting program that works? I am particularly ugly... don't know why my boy friend is my boy friend in the first place. I wouldn't want to take pictures of myself in a million years.
Anyway, this is one of the reasons why I'm still hesitant to order this device.

Try Yahoo messenger+ video plugin. It wors perfectly for me. Sound and video. Tested yesterday.

No, only yahoo contacts, but at least is a solution. Skype is playing the cell companies game here, so it will take a long time before they offer a video solution.

My understanding is the video chat in Honeycomb is through the GTalk server, which is awesome. Also quick note as I haven't seen it mentioned yet, Qik is actually owned by Skype.

Do u have enough bandwidth? Other then that its still in neatly beta for mobile hopefully it will improve.

May I ask where you got it from?
The oovoo site says my tablet doesn't qualify (running tnt 4.25)
And loading the oovoo apk I found on xda only force closes. (Even after moving it to system/app)

I used my Samsung Fascinate to download it from the market then put it in my dropbox. I'll upload the apk I used to Megaupload in a moment.

Yeah I was on my work's wireless connection so I should have had plenty of bandwidth. Hopefully some updates will come soon!

Isn't Skype eventually supposed to add video/camera support for tablets in the near future? Thought I recalled a couple of articles during CES about this.

Qik is only program I found that worked properly with infuse. It worked good doing a video call with an iPhone 4.

There is an app called Clearsea in the market that is free for now that works very well. We use it on IPads for video conferencing to our video conference system in the office. But I think it can also do device to device video calls as well. Just has to be a SIP or H323 compliant device for it to function properly.

when we get gingerbread we can use google talk to make video calls. skype was working on a video chat release for android and was waiting verizon to give the ok until microsoft bought it. i think we will now have to wait until skype is fully working on windows phone 7 for a few months before they even consider releasing it.

Try Tango. They just updated to work with the infuse 4g. Me personally I like tango better they use Push Notification unlike other that have a process running synchronizing every X time killing battery. With tango I could completely shut it down and still get notified.

yes. thats part of the point. seeing as everyone i know now has a phone with a front facing camera and a skype account, and iphones's facetime and android's google talk dont run on each others platforms, itd be really nice to have skype up and running now.
