Can't write on internal memory!! - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hello. I'm just new in the android world, i have a desire hd with HTC sense.
Target: reading ebooks in italian (my language)
Application desired: the HTC built-in ebook reader, which stores .epub ebooks in local memory root\etc\file.epub
Through: i take a .epub file (an ebook i already own or i'm gonna buy, in italian) and put it in the same directory since the ebook reader doesn't allow to 'browse' and choose files.
Problem: whatever i try to copy and paste, doesn't paste!!! Even a normal .jpg taken from the SD card....when i go and 'paste' it in the root folder of the internal phone memory or in the root\etc, the file manager says 'cannot copy the file'.
It's like i am not allowed to manually write anything in the phone memory.
I have tried two different file managers (ASTRO and ES). Same thing. With ASTRO the 'option PASTE' is grayed out....with 'ES' i can click on 'paste' but then it says 'couldn't copy filexxx.jpg'.
Solution 1: I find another GOOD ebook reader (the HTC one already present in the desire HD is fantastic) which allows me to 'load' files from whatever location they are..... .lit and .epub compatible
Solution 2: if it works, i could just copy the ebooks i want to read in the root\etc so that the HTC ebook reader finds them....BUT for this, I have to be allowed to write the phone memory ------ HOW ?
thanks!!

I Take It Your Phones Not Rooted?
Basically To Do Anything At All, That Has To Do With The System You Need SU (Super-User) Access! In Other Words, You Need To Be Rooted..... Try Installing Z4Root!! Give That A Try, & You Should Hopefully Be Good, As Far As Being Allowed To Write To The System!!
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App

I actually found a nice application (Laputa) to read ebooks. Only thing missing is the zoom through multi touch actions. The rest is ok...i imported my few ebooks and everything works!
I didn't need to write the internal memory, but what you said will sure come in handy once i need again to write the phone memory!

hey. that application is not present in the marketplace.
My problem is now that i set a ringtone for incoming SMS (\storagecard\notifications\filexxx.wav), it is correctly read...but that like if i receive a sms one hour later, the default notification sound starts....instead of my custom wav file. Why ?
So i thought that maybe whenever i dis/mount the sd card (where the file is present), the settings go back to the default notification sound.
BUT that doesn't happen for the incoming call ringtone...which is also in the \storagecard\ringtone folder (.mp3)

ok now that was weird....the 'notification' ringtone is only for emails. In fact, whenever i receive an email the correct file plays. But not for the sms.
To change the real sms notification sound, i just had to go in 'messages' and then from there - settings - choose sound.
Weird that it's separated from the normal phone ringtone settings panel.
so i guess it's solved.

Bluetooth OBEX PUSH - Change default location

Hello,
I have a MDA Wizard and have been trying to change the default location of the files transferred to the storage card with no success. I changed the BaseDir value in the registry, but it does not work. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
yea me too, im looking for a solution. changed BaseDir and even change the My Documents path to Storage Card. Nothing so far. anyone know?
New location for files received by bluetooth
I came accross this program in this forum somewhere. Really good. Give it a try.
Just run the cab file and soft reset. After that, run the program whenever you want to switch bluetooth on and it puts a bluetooth icon on the system tray. double click icon and go to settings and set the dir where you want to receive the file and you're ready to go.
I've tried getting a really big file too just to see if this merely moves the file to the other location after receiving or actually changes the location of incoming files and found out it changes the location.
Let me know if this works for you.

and Version 1.5 Coming Soon
Partial Success...
This is an old thread but I think is directly related to what I'm trying to do. I've seen many other threads trying to solve the same problem, so I won't create a new one. Anyway, first, here is the info:
AT&T 8525
HERM: 100
ROM: 3.62.502.3 (Offical AT&T)
Results:
Successfully transfered 2 test files from my laptop (XP SP2 Tosiba Bluetooth 4.00.22D) directly to my storage card:
AdbeRdr80_en_US.exe - 21,822,168 bytes
Tears of a Dragon.mp4 - 8,572,344 bytes
How:
Added a STRING value BaseDir to the HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\OBEX\{000...} set to: "/Storage Card/"
Problem / Temporary Solution:
Using Resco I can see the file in the Storage Card as soon as the beam is over, however the OBEX prompts you if you want to save the file or not. If you click NO the file gets deleted. If you click YES, the file gets moved after two seconds to \My Documents or some files just go nowhere(?). So before I actually answer the prompt, I just copy the file elsewhere on my card and then click NO on the prompt.
Analysis / Conclusions (so far):
1. The official AT&T ROM does not have OBEX FTP service installed (obexfile.dll). It only has the OBEX Default Inbox service (obexinbx.dll).
2. The obexinbx.dll is not behaving as expected. Ex: Why "/Storage Card/" vs. "\Storage card\"; Adding the DWORD value DisableUI does not eliminate the prompts as it should; If I delete the TransportAuntheticate value in the same key, it just reappears, yet the dll is not supposed to use that value as per MSDN2.
Could somebody try to duplicate my results and/or see if there is a way to disable the prompts? Thanks in advance!
Has anyone tried this? Please?
Here are some screenshots to better explain what is happening:
1. Add BaseDir value to the OBEX key.
2. Send test file from my laptop.
3. PPC displays 1st UI prompt (recfileprompt.jpg)
4. Laptop displays progress indicator for file transfer. (progress.jpg)
5. When transfer is complete, PPC display 2nd UI prompt. (uiprompt.jpg)
6. I can confirm the test file did transfer to the SD card (fileinssdcard.jpg)
7. If I click on YES the file disappears (but some files get moved to \My Documents). If I Click NO the file disappears.
So... Is there a way to get rid of these prompts? Or to make them not move or delete the file once is in the SD Card?
Thanks,

Unfortunately, the contents of my HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\OBEX\ are the folders Services and Transport. There is no {0000-0000...} folder there. It exists though in the folder Services, so for my device, it is HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\OBEX\SERVICES\{0000...}. After adding the key, the temporary storage for the received file is ideed SD Card so I can grab it before responding to the prompt.
Nevertheless, either if I respond YES or NO for the file save prompt, the file is deleted from SD Card and does not reappear anywhere on the device, so it does not get moved, but deleted.
Notes:
For me it does not matter weather I write "/Storage Card/" or "\Storage Card\", it still receives to Storage Card, but regardless of what I choose, YES or NO, it deletes the file.

Exactly. This is the best I could get it to work, by just copying or moving the file to another SD Card location (or renaming it) before responding to the prompt. Anyway, this is kind of an old post. I had orginally done this since Dr. Yar crashed on my phone. Since then, I discovered HTC Bluetooth FTP Explorer 1.2, which adds an FTP tab to your Bluetooth Connections settings, where you can specify the default location for incoming bluetooth files.
Thanks for trying it out though!
PS,
I was trying to upload HTC Bluetooth cab, but there is a problem with the database. Anyway, I got it from VP3G's AddOn pack in the Hermes forum. A quick search should find it for you.

I don't know whether you are referring to this (which is inside my rom), but look at my settings. Even with these, Bluetooth still receives to Device and saves to Device\My Documents.

Yes. That's it. It works fine for me. Is your SD Card name "Storage Card"? I would also try using the browse button and selecting different folders inside the SD Card.

Just tried. Same thing!
Well. That is strange. I don't have a Trinity. I have a Hermes. What I would do at this point, is first, try installing the BT FTP cab over your existing one (backup first!). If that doesn't work, try removing/re-inserting the SD Card and also if possible another SD Card. Could there be a write access-protect restriction on your card that forces the OS to use the default My Documents location?
Anyway I have to go back now to my other life , but if I think of something else I'll let you know. Sorry you have problems
OBEX vs FTP
That bluetooth setting is only for FTP transfers. OBEX is the "native" transfer protocol that phones et al. use. Changing the setting for FTP received files doesn't alter the OBEX ones!
I'm going to try Dr Yar, but would love to find a registry setting for this!
I've just found this one as a cure, about to try it..

Direct copy of files via BT to Memory Card

Hi folks,
is there a possibility to have incoming files via BT to be copied to memory card instantly?
Currently files are first being copied to main disk on WM6 (after you agree to receive) and then you can specify where you want it saved in.
Due to lack of space, I would prefer if it is possible to override the current way and have files going to memory card instantly.
Would be happy if there is an solution?
regards
Horst
There is a BT utility called "Dr YAR" something. Sorry I can't recollect the entire name. One of it's features is it allows you to transfer files directly to the storage card. However I must inform you that in all the times I have tried it over various ROMS and devices, I have never had it successfully complete large files. It always goes through to about 50% and then hangs.
I really hope somebody can create a simple app that can cover for this one annoying aspect of WM.
Hi,
thx for the Info. i also do know of a program called "Sniper", which fulfills the job more or less as well.
But what I was wondering, if there aint a way to get files directly to the card.
regards
Horst

Without third party software? I don't think so.
There are 2 ways a file is transfered to your
1. Information Exchange
2. File Transfer
Usually when you transfer a file from a normal non-smart phone, it sends a file using the Information Exchage, OBEX push, i think... This is used by WM mobiles for transferring Outlook files like vCard, etc. So when you recieve files from another Phone to ur WM via OBEX push, you most probably, wont have have control over where u can save the file, atleast by default firmware.
Now in the second case, Say transfering a file from a Laptop, it uses "File Transfer" to send a file. This uses a shared folder on your WM phone, and the file is transfered to your shared folder. This Shared folder is defined in the "Advance..." button of your "File Transfer" service, under the "Services" tab in Bluetooth Settings. So basically select a folder on your card to define where you recieve the files. i have transfered a fairly large file (24Mb , thats more than the free memory i have on my ROM) directly tothe card. kindly note that the files in the folder that you have decided to share will be available/ accessible to the host bt device sending the file, so its a good idea to define a new folder that for the purpose.
Hope this info was helpful
official hermes AT&T WM6 does not have FILE TRANSFER!
Hello,
I'm linking to my other posts in the thread below, since nobody has replied to that one. Anyway, the HERMES offcial AT&T ROM does not have the OBEX file transfer service, only the default Inbox service. In that case I have managed to transfer direct to the SD Card using this service, but I would like to improve the process by removing the UI prompt. Please read the other thread and let me know if you can duplicate my results and/or if there is a way to remove the prompts. Thanks,

Any good File Manager Apps

I've been learning to be pretty carefull on apps I use since I picked up my GTablet. Weird things keep happening with my movie directories. They keep deleting the movies. For instance I tried out EFile File Manager. I've been using Rockplayer which reads local sdcard (internal memory) but doesn't ready sdcard2 (my additional mini sdmc card). So I've been using sniffer to navigate to that area then play video by clicking on the file. I grabbed EFile because I wanted and app that could copy files between internal (sdcard) and the mini sdmc (sdcard2) and the standard file apps (sniffer and file manager) don't seem to be able to do that.
However, after having a process error message on EFile and then finding my video's wiped on sdcard2 I've gotten a little more carefull about what I play around with in the market store.
For regular Viewsonic G Tablet folks is there any good file managers that would be better to use for file copies between sdcards?
Thanks!
Ghost Commander is great. It has a two pane view that works really well on a tablet.
I use root explorer for my everyday stuff when on just my tab, ESfile explorer to stream from my pc, and wifi file explorer for small file transfers to my tab. I couldn't decide on just one so I got all 3. Hope this helps!

Rockplayer will see /sdcard2. You can go into settings and set sdcard2 as default and when in sdcard2 you can hit the back button to get to the root directory from which you can see sdcard, sdcard2 and usbdisk (if you have a usb flash drive plugged in)
If you are using a file manager anyways to view media from your SDCard2, putting a .nomedia file in the root of your sd card2 should stop the files from being deleted. After that, you can use Rockplayer as normal to view your vid files.
Hands down root explorer. There is an endless amount of things it can do if you know what your doing. I've tried many. Root explorer has a plain look took it but you can do the most with it. If you are an advanced android user you can't go wrong with root explorer.

I'm a stickler on file sorting settings and view settings and root explorer does a great job here. If only it also had a file directory hiearchy window so u could just jump to another folder, instead of hitting back a bunch, ah well. It suits my needs.
Thanks for the suggestions
Thanks,
I will give those a try!
There is another one called Yaffs explorer that seems to work ok as well. It has some cosmetic bugs (menus sometimes appear in French) but I have used to do things like modify build.prop without any difficulty. And (at least at the moment) it is free.

[Q] How add epub books to HTC's Reader and my shelf

Hi....
I am not sure this is the right forum for this but I would like to know if anyone solved or can tell me how to put my epub books so they show in HTC's Reader.
I live in China and have a little bit of problem to get paperback books I want to read. I got lots of epub books but the reader only shows some of them and not even the same ones that been showing before.
Is there any directory in the phone I should put them? Tried to put some in the directory system/etc because I found the original books there but still not luck.
Would really like to know how to do it. I know epub works so can't be that most be some other thing that I need to do.
Anyway all suggestions and help would be appreciated.

Put your epub files on your SD card in a directory called "Digital Editions". They will then show up in the HTC Reader application

Mine are in a folder called "eBooks" and the reader app imported them no problem.
Unsure as to if it does a scan of the SD card or if the files need to be in a specifically named folder (either "digital editions" or "eBooks" or perhaps others also)
I have this problem. Let Someone please help
Windows Mobile also makes it possible.

[FIX] "Unable To Play This Type Of Audio File"

Hi there! This will be my first thread at XDA.
I've just upgraded my HTC Sensation from stock to InsertCoin 6.0.0, and also installed the Beats Audio media player.
While I removed my SD card, inserted it into my PC, and copied 274 mp3 tracks to it, the standard music player couldn't play any of the songs. Also, the Photo Gallery wasn't able to find new pictures anymore.
People told me that my SD card was bad, which I found a little bit strange. The app "File Manager" was flawlessly able to find all of the pictures, and also the music, which actually could be played by the HTC music player by the app itself. I think this is caused by a bug or something, so I found out the fix myself:
1. Download a file browser app like "File manager" or "ES File Explorer"
2. Delete the folder /sdcard/music (or format the SD card, but make sure to backup the content you wish to keep!)
3. Create a new folder called "Music" at the root of your SD card
4. Get the app "Wifi File Explorer" from Google Play
5. Activate the WiFi (All Apps > Settings > Wireless & Networks > WiFi for older phones)
6. Open the browser and insert the URL shown by the app
7. Upload a file, open the music app, and see if it plays. If it works: zip all the songs, send them to the phone, and unzip them by clicking "unzip" next to the folder in the browser.
If it doesn't, I'm afraid you'll have to format your SD card. (All apps > Settings > Storage > Unmount SD card, and then Delete (Format) SD card)
Hope it'll help someone out there! Cheers
Edit: To avoid that this will happen again, connect your phone to the PC using a USB cable by the next time.
Edit #2: USB file transfer results exactly the same. I strongly recommend using Wifi File Explorer (or similar) to transfer desired data files between the PC and smartphone.
Playing music issues
Helou.
My GF reached your post looking for a solution to the same problem you had. Then she contacted me. In case you are still having this problem, is rather simply caused by a lack of trigger of the media scan. Every time you copy a media file to your phone's memory, it should trigger this action, but sometimes it doesnt happens (dont ask me why, it should). In fact, the solution you give is that the Wifi Explorer app correctly triggers the media scan. You can save precious minutes by just installing this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.addz.mediascanner
And run it every time you copy/move files around from your pc to your phone.
If it helped, then update your thread with the solution, you never know when someone is looking for the same problem (then again, is one month old, maybe you're no longer here)
It worked for me.
I know this is an old thread and I didn't see where anyone noted that the solution worked. I have an HTC Incredible that was flaking out on me. The issue stated in this thread came up when I was reloading my music onto my SD card. I came across this forum and looked up the app recommended and it solved the problem. I am thankful for people out there who know what they are doing.
