Hi all,
Didn't notice anyone mentioning this so I thought I'd give a heads up. Some of the recent apps on the Market have a reported size of greater than 30mbs, and the Galaxy Tab (and probably the Galaxy S too) has problems downloading apps of that size.
I encountered the issue when attempting to download the latest update for Drift Mania from the Market (it was 31mbs), but download would always fail almost immediately. Contacted their support, and they mentioned how Market has to download to the Cache dir before installing and that could be the source of the issue.
So I checked the /cache dir on the Tab (running JK5 firmware atm), and sure enough it's only 30.00mb's in size according to Root Explorer. Then I noticed today the X-Plane app on the Market had a notice warning Galaxy series device people not to download because it wouldn't install/download properly and as expected, their app size is reported to be 31mbs.
Sideloading the apk onto the Tab and installing works fine of course (my HD2 fulfills it's purpose - no cache size restriction problems )
So yeah, word of warning: don't buy apps from the Market that are greater than 30.00mbs (or whatever max size is the /cache dir) in size - it won't download/install!. Unless someone comes out with a custom rom or Samsung issues a new partition map to make /cache > 30mbs?
I've only seen two apps that are of that apk size so far:
* Drift Mania Championship EDIT: Devs updated package, now below 30mbs, so no problems installing on Tab for now
* X-Plane 9 EDIT: Workaround for X-Plane available from http://wiki.x-plane.com/X-Plane_for...he_application_will_not_download.2Finstall.22
Be warned!
I didnt know about this. Thanks.

Did you buy and download from the Market directly or did you sideload it (ie. installed manually via apk)?
What I'm talking about is specifically downloading and installing via Market and not copying a apk onto the SGT and installing.
Purchased directly from Market & installed. Mine is Verizon if that counts.

Interesting... would you be able to check the total size of the /cache directory and firmware version of your Tab? Want to know if it's > 30.08mbs (that's what Root Explorer reports for my Euro Tab with Roto's JMC firmware).
Thanks
Are you using OCLF? i had a lot of problems till I undid the fix. Was wondering if it makes a new cache partition.
Please guide me how to check this out.

No, no OCLF. As explained in the 1st post, the problem concerns the size of the /cache partition that is determined by Samsung in their ROM.
OCLF doesn't touch the /cache dir.

Instructions based on using Astro file manager. Would be similar if you used any other File Manager (except for Samsung's stock "My Files"... that won't let you see the device's root directory)
1. Launch Astro and keep pressing the "Up" icon until the directory you're in is just "/"
2. Scroll to the directory called "cache" and long-press it to bring up the File Options menu. Click on Details
3. A Directory Details window will pop up. Just above the OK button, you should see a "Device total size:" description. For example, mine says "Device total size: 30.06 M"
EDIT: Updated 1st post, X-Plane dev's have posted up a workaround of their own.
Hi Aussiebum,
Thanks for the guides. I don't have the Tab at work, will find out when home. Checking the Droid1 (experimenting) with me, it shows as "Device total size: 92.62 M", "Device free size: 60.66 M".

Yeah, that directory is where Market downloads get stored temporarily (and the problem on the Tab). Oh, firmware version check would simply be starting up the Dialer app and typing in *#1234#*, or going into Settings => About Phone => Software Information.

It does, and that's the problem - Samsung phones can't handle Market apk package sizes of > 30mbs
EDIT: to be specific, the Google specified apk limit for the new Market is 40mb if I remember ccorrectly.
Hi,
the apps with apk size greater than 30mb are growing.
At the time i'm writing i can't install MegaJump and any from the Battle Bears games.
There is a way to download the apk from PC so i can transfer to the phone?
Anyone know if Samsung have plans to increase the size of the cache folder in future firmware?
Maybe there is, yes...

I am not sure if this uses the /cache(have not tested it, yet) but do you guys know of Market.Android.com ?
Here you can install apps DIRECTLY to your phone, from a PC. Just log on with your Google account and install the app directly onto your phone. If you have more than one phone, it will prompt you for the device to install it onto. Now I am not sure if this will also use the /cache dir, I think it will 'cause it still downloads it to your phone.
But to answer your question, Yes, you can download the apk from PC and transfer it to your phone.

Rooting Galaxy S 4G & Deleting Fota Files
Hi guys - I wanted to shared with all of you the methods that I used to Root my phone and getting rid of the FOTA files and "Bloatware" which free up ALOT of space.
****I want to thanks "Theshadowman" for the Fota files and to the developer of SuperOneClick, the awesome tool that makes rooting possible.****
Before this fix I was getting the "Internal low space" message.
Let's get started
Programs and Files you will need:
-Samsung Galaxy S 4G Drivers 32-bit: http://rapidshare.com/files/456420295/SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_x86.rar
-Samsung Galaxy S 4G Drivers 64-bit: http://rapidshare.com/files/456420354/usb_drivers_GalaxyS_x64.zip
-SuperOneClick 1.7 (To root your phone)
-File Expert (to Unzip files)
-Super Manager (Access to /data/fota)
-Fota.zip (Files that will free up all that space)
Additional Files
-Bloatware (Thanks to Chadster)
http://db.tt/RFzd364
***Note:*** You will find all the files you need attached at the end of this post with the exception of Root Checker and Titanium Backup. You can download those by simply doing a search in the Market.
How to Root your Galaxy S 4G
1- Download Samsung Galaxy S 4G driver and install it. Make sure you know what version of Windows you've got. (I posted links for 32bit and 64bit)
2- In your Phone, Go to Settings>Applications>Development>USB Debugging.
Note: You will have to check USB debugging or else it will not work.
3- Download SuperOneClick 1.7
4- Open SuperOneClick 1.7
5- Under exploit MAKE SURE you select "rageagainstthecage" and then click Root. Let it do what it needs to do Note: the whole process will take between 5-15 minutes
6- Download Root Checker from Market
7- Run the test and it will confirm you that your phone is Rooted
How to Delete Fota files
Step 1: Download all three files in your computer and send them to your email and open them from your phone.
Alternative method: Download them directly to your phone.
Step 2: Install File Expert
Step 3: Install Super Manager
Step 4: Open File Expert and navigate to the directory aka folder that you downloaded the files to.
Step 5: Press and Hold the fota.zip file and select Unzip files
Note: File Expert will unzip files by default in same folder.
It will create a Fota folder with two files fota_delta_dp1 and fota_delta_dp2
Step 6: Open Super Manager and then open setup and check the "Enable ROOT function" then press menu on your phone and switch to r/w (stands for read and write)
Step 7: Navigate to the folder where you have the 2 Unzipped fota files (fota_delta_dp1 and fota_delta_dp2)
Step 8: Select both and cut them
Step 9: Navigate to /data/fota and paste the 2 files in this folder
Step 10:Reboot phone and WAWAWIWA! between 150mb-300mb of free space
If you want to get rid of Bloatware - Download Titanium Backup from Market open it and uninstall every app that you don't need.
Warning: Becareful with what you uninstall.
Hope this helps and let me know if have any questions.
damn dude that worked! thank you, this helps the phone a lot right?? Hey man I was also wondering if you know a way to fix the lagging for this phone?? I've heard of oneclicklagfix thru superuser once u root the phone, but I can't access it because, like I was told not too long ago, there isn't a oneclicklagfix available for the sgs g4 right now. any pointers? thank you
Worked perfect. Have 400mb free. I'm also wondering about the a lagfix for this device.

now you've tried using that titanium backup app...now how would you know which bloatware you can removed and which you can't.
Just in time omg!!! Lol just got the galaxy s 4g today for $280 ahhhh yeahhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Its safe to say that if you didn't read about a lagfix in this forum, then there is none yet. I would only attempt tools for other phones if your an advanced user.
If you have the bloat zip file, use that as a template to delete apps. Im not that experienced.

If you use the paid version, you can freeze the app first to see if it causes any problems.(trust me, it's worth the money)
If not, just do as fknfocused said. Download chadstet's bloat zip (in the themes and apps forum) and use it to see which bloat can be removed.
But it is pretty basic. If it ooks like 3rd party software, just rip that sucker out of your phone.

I'm glad this helped. No lagfix yet for this phone, but once you get rid of all the bloatware you should experience less lag. I'm pretty sure it will come out but I am giving it time.

Dude I was fine until I got to part where I have to paste the files in the

In super manager go to setup and select "Enable ROOT function" and then press the back button of your phone in super manager and then you will see the /data/fota make sure you are not in /mnt/sdcard/data. Let me know if you still need help

The fota.zip rocks! It was driving me crazy that I was removing the bloatware, but not gaining any internal storage. It went from 24M to 356M after your fix. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Quite likely, without restoring them, if you've used the space freed for something else.
The files aren't really replaced, but the "placeholder" files that reserve space for FOTA have been truncated to zero length.
Removing the files completely will likely allow them to be regenerated, assuming you have cleared the space for them on the internal storage, should you want to get any FOTA (which, unless you're running stock firmware or are a dev and need the new firmware, is an open question).
=D my memory storange application space is at 318 mb now =D

Hey guys,
This is my first ever android app. It copies the fota files to your sd, then moves them to /data/fota/ for you.
Please DO NOT use this app if you don't know how to flash back to stock using ODIN. This utility is ONLY for the SGS4G. It will probably prevent you from updating your software until you either restore the fota files (function will be added soon) or re-flash to stock using ODIN.
This app will also be available on the Android Market shortly.
I am not responsible for anything that may happen to your device.
This app was made using the Root Tools library by Stericson.
Update to v1.1:
Made layout much cleaner and added info.
App now checks to make sure SD is available for temp files.
App now deletes temp files from SD card once finished.
App now asks for root when opening instead of on first button press.

Awesome job man! I will flash the new KD1 and try this out.
Have you tried that thing that we were trying on IRC the other night, on KD1 yet. I was fixing to give it a whirl.
Naw I haven't gotten played with CWM since then. Hopefully drhonk will get that restore figured out soon! He mentioned he needed a logcat in addition to the recovery.log I sent him so I'm assuming krylon or someone else got that to him.
Worked Like A Pro on KD1!!!
Just got a Galaxy S 4G today and was stunned that I ran out of internal memory after installing only a few apps.
Ran this and have 342MB of internal memory. Still not much, but that should hold me for a while.
So you think installing this might prevent a future OTA?
Is it pretty simple to restore the FOTA files back to the way they were so you can get OTA?
Problem is though, won't you have all that "extra" internal memory filled with apps, so the FOTA then won't fit?
Prior to you adding the reversal to your app, is there an easy way to manually reverse it?
EDIT: Deleted data/fota and rebooted and the phone recreated the fota files.
I'm concerned that if we use this extra space, someday the OS is going to need that to do the update and the only way around it is going to be to uninstall enough programs to free up the 250MB that the fota files need.

Or you can just flash the Rom that contains the new update; there's usually one up about 12 hours after an update is released

Excellent work! Worked like a charm for me!

Thanks for the feedback!! I've learned quite a bit about doing layouts since I first created this app. After my computer organization final tomorrow I'll probably make the app look nicer and add some stuff to it.
Was anyone able to download it from the market?? My co-worker was able to but when I downloaded it it said it wasn't properly signed.. Possibly because I have the app installed from debugging in eclipse..?
Downloaded just fine for me.

Rooting
You will need:
A source of Better Terminal Emulator.apk (3.38 works) (From now on called BTE)
A working android dual-boot
How to:
Somehow get BTE onto your netbook
Install it using the provided file manager. (DON'T WORRY THAT PACKAGE INSTALLER CRASHES. THAT IS NORMAL. JUST CLICK FORCE CLOSE AND PICK BTE FROM THE LAUCHER.)
There's no need to install the plugin, just click OK and open and close BTE until it opens a green text on white background.
Exit BTE for now and download busybox
Re-open bte and type cd /sdcard/downloads then cat busybox > /system/xbin/busybox
Get Root Explorer from somewhere and install it with file manager
Open it. Test whether busybox works by clicking the mount r/w button. If it changes, your netbook is rooted!
Installing Apps that give "application not installed" in the package installer
Get the app you want and find it in root explorer
Long click the APK and click copy
Right click > more > home
Click mount r/w at the top (MUST BE ROOTED AND HAVE BUSYBOX INSTALLED, SEE ABOVE)
Go to /data/app and click paste
Find your apk and long click and click rename. Name it com.publisher.appname
Long click on the apk and click permissions
Tick the 1st two boxes on the first row, the 1st one in the second row and the 1st. one on the third row.
Go to your launcher (I use GO Launcher EX) and see if it's installed. The app may still force close. If it has not installed, wait a while and see if it appears or try copying it to /system/app and back again

Hi thanks for the guide I've come across a problem though. I've installed BTE and got to the stage
Re-open bte and type cd /sdcard/downloads then cat busybox > /system/xbin/busybo

Any thoughts on why it is doing this?

However when trying to install another app I have run out of system disk space (135.17MB Used, 396k free)
Is there any way to make the system disk larger without having to prune it? Or install to sdcard?
Cheers

I'm working on an apps2sd method.
You can move to /x-root/app or /sdcard/app (make the folders and move the app apk into it first)
The main code is:
ln -s /data/app/com.whatever.app.apk /x-root/app/com.whatever.app.apk
-or-
ln -s /data/app/com.whatever.app.apk /sdcard/app/com.whatever.app.apk
I've been looking to port newer android versions (possibly honeycomb) to the various android netbook devices, but I need the imgs from the 2.3 devices. Can anyone help by posting the imgs in their downloads for android drive (from windows)

The Google Now Installer/Restorer v1.1
Purpose
There have been a lot of users with issues installing and uninstalling Google Now for ICS. This is my solution for those users.
This is only an installer for the many different variations of Google Now that were created in this news worthy thread: The Google Now for ICS Project
This installer allow user of different types of roms and devices to quickly install Google Now to see if it works for them and if it does not, it allows these users to restore their original Google Search.
This thread is not and will not be about issues with specific modded Google Now apks, go here: The Google Now for ICS Project for that. I have no problem incorporating new apks into the installer. But I will not attempt to deal with issues outside of the installer.
Testing(Green = working, Red = not working)
(Need more people to test as many different devices, roms, and recoveries)
Devices
HTC EVO 3D
HTC EVO 4g LTE
Roms
OTA_Shooter_ICS_35_S_Sprint_WWE_2.89.651.2-2.17.651.5
Tranquility rls1b
Recoveries
CWM 5.0.2.0
TWRP s-on
So if you experience any issues, I will attempt to help, but understand that I if you are not setup the exact same, I may not know what is wrong.
Touch recovery is not active in this aroma installer, so use up and down to make a selection and the power button to confirm the selection.
Requirements
Rooted
ICS
CWM (only recovery tested, others may work, you let me know)
Instructions(should already know this, but here you go)
1. Transfer .zip to the root of your sd card
2. Boot into recovery
3. Select "install zip from sdcard"
4. Select "choose zip from sdcard"
5. Select "GoogleNowforICSInstaller_v1.0.zip"
6. Select "Install GoogleNowforICSInstaller_v1.0.zip"
Once the installer is up, the rest should be self explanatory, if not just follow the prompts.
I hope this helps someone.

Google Now for ICS Installer v1.1
I havent been following google now lately, but it seems that you're using stock rooted ics on evo where this works. is this also true for touchwiz phones?
will it work on stock rooted samsung?
Just checked it out on my HTC EVO 4g LTE running tranquility rls1b and TWRP s-on, works great back and forth. Thanks!

It should work on any ICS phone, but it has only been tested on the phone listed in the 1st post.
jdcasino confirms that it works on his HTC EVO 4g LTE.

yes, but if I remember correctly, touchwiz differs from sense in framework files or something. I have epic 4g touch. can anyone else confirm that google now can work on stock rooted touchwiz phone if /system space wasn't an issue?

Sure, give it a try.
edit: there may be an issue with the Installer not finding the original Google Search apk, someone posted this and basically it states that you may have a some extra characters at the end of the apk.

I don't think it has anything to do with sense or touchwiz, the modified Google Now was modded for AOSP, which doesn't have either, but has worked on HTC and Samsung.

Since it won’t let me post to the forum I thought I would just do it this way. On my Verizon S3 I’m rooted, unlocked, OTA kernel, running a stockish rom (cleanrom) and CMW 6.0.1.2. The installer said it worked but it broke Google search. In the installer it said everything was fine but nope. I went to do the restore and it said it couldn’t find the backup so I went with the one provided and that worked fine. When setting up I chose the first one which I think was v7 for arm7. If I chose wrong I’ll try again but otherwise I’ll just wait for an updated version. Unlike others I’m in no hurry and was just testing it out on my phone. If you want more info I can try to install it again and try to provide whatever you might need or want.

What do you mean by it broke Google Search (what were the indications that it did not work)?
When you restored did Google Search work again?
Check if you hae the follow "GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk" in your "/system/app"
Are there other files with this same name?

How much space does it state that you have free in the /system directory?
It would seem that you don't have enough space in your /system directory of your internal memory.
One thing to try to see if this is the case, when you do it manually, don't modify or add any files to /system/usr/srec/ directory
larva_pro said:

i did installed manually with out changing nothing on the /system/usr/srec . and im able to opent he register of google now.. as soon i click im'in

To get the total /system directory size you need to run the following command in a program like "Terminal Emulator" or "aShell":

Yes I have that GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk in /system/app and yes it is without the _usa after it. On the line under it it has the odex version. Then the Google search widget apk and odex. It is this way with before and after I try to install.
Just tried it again choosing mikeyxda v7 it says created backup ok and return status 0. Google now installed return status 0 once the phone boots up it says “unfortunately, Google search has stopped”. I also get that message no matter how i try to search or tap on the google app it puts on it. Double checked the permissions from the main thread and all permissions are set right, if that helps. Went to restore and it says I never backed it up but I can use the generic one which I select and get again return status 0 for everything and once the phone comes back up Google search works just fine again. Hope this helps.

That's good to know. I see that the problem has to do with your system being odexed.
The reason it FCs is because when replacing the Google Search apk there is no matching modified odex.
This is modified for deodexed roms.
Check on this thread and ask about a modified odexed velvet.apk and velvet.odex

I'm using GN on an odexed ICS ROM, no problems. Just had to delete the *.odex files for the apk's that the installer replaces.

***UPDATE***
As of update MF5 and higher, this feature is now part of Samsung's software (YAY! )
To move apps to SD, simply Go to:
1] Settings
2] More
3] Application Manager
4] Select your app from the list
5] Select the "Move to SD card" option
For those of you on older firmwares or wanting a slightly more powerful tool, read on!
Hi Everyone,
I'm posting this here hoping to save others some trouble of finding how to move Apps to SD Card. Officially it's not supported, but there's already a few methods of doing so. First, some warnings:
Rooting: Currently there is no recoveries for the Galaxy S4, so if rooting somehow goes wrong, you've got an expensive paperweight.
Apps to SD Card: SD Card memory is more vulnerable than the internal memory, so there's always a risk of data loss on them. Keep anything you can't afford to lose in the internal memory!
Step 1: Prepare your phone for rooting:
First up you need to Root your Galaxy S4. To do this:
[On your Phone]
- Go to Settings --> More Tab --> About Device
- Tap "Build number" multiple times - I think after 9 it enables "Developer Options"
- Go back to the "More" menu, and open the new developer options tab
- Enable "USB Debugging"
- Plug your phone into your computer via USB
[On your Computer (Windows only instructions)]
- Download the Galaxy S Drivers from HERE and save them somewhere handy (IE: Desktop)
- Right click "Computer/My Computer", go to properties, and open your device manager
- You should see your galaxy in there somewhere (Possibly under "other"). Right click this, go to "update driver software", and browse for drivers. Select the S Driver folder mentioned above and hit next, and it should update/install itself.
View attachment 1935015
Step 2: Root your phone:
For versions before MDN/MDM - thunderserpent's guide should do the trick: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2266336
For versions ending in MDN/MDM - djembey's guide should work great: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2255190
For older versions (stock without an OTA Update), use the below method:
[On your Computer (Windows only instructions)]
- Once installed, download the Motochopper software HERE to root the phone
- Double click the motochopper "run.bat" in the folder, and follow the instructions onscreen.
Step 3: Install and use FolderMount:
[On your Phone]
- Once rooted, download foldermount HERE
- Once installed, open FolderMount and grant superuser access when asked.
- In FolderMount, you have the options to:
View attachment 1935014
:: Name your folder (IE: "Generic Game 1")
:: Select the "Source" Folder (the one on your local storage)
:: Select the "Destination" Folder (the one on your SD Card)
When you enter these details, it will then move them to your SD Card!
Personally I paid the £1.40 for the FolderMount Pro, because it also shows you filesizes when browsing - and it's finally made my S4 useful!
I know it's not the easiest process ever, but hopefully I've explained it enough to get people started. I have a 32GB external and the measly 8.8 internal I was left with was useless. Now I can move apps to the external card to save space internally!
Common Locations of Large Files:
Two common locations for games (IE: Gameloft games, EA Games, etc.)
Android/data
Android/obb
Potential Downfalls:
- Loading times may increase from the external memory
- Updates may cause problems, although testing so far shows it doesn't have any problems
- You may need to re-mount after reboot, the mount on boot option may not always work
If you get prompted to redownload a game/update that you already have - check in FolderMount that it has been mounted okay
Disclaimer: These instructions are purely to try and help people - I don't own, maintain, or affiliate with any of the downloads. Use at your own risk!

Samsung's response to the lack of built in memory is an SD Card, yet they don't officially support this - so after a bit of looking around I managed to get it working. Figured if it helps even one or two people out, yay
Please note you will probably have to reinstall the apps when updates for the app are available in the market.
Not too mention Samsung's response was misleading and stupid, since misleads customers thinking it fixes the app storage.

So far, I'm not entirely sure. They seem to have different locations:
Android/data
Android/obb
Are a huge chunk (6.6GB on mine - mainly games - Gameloft etc.)
The rest are in 100s of MB at most, so those seem to be the main places. If you get the 'paid' version of the FolderMount app, it shows you the folder sizes in the app which helps a lot
As for updates/reinstalling, this may indeed be true. I haven't had a chance to test/play with this unfortunately! If I get an update anywhere, I'll update this!
Edit: I deleted one of my folders from NFS MW and it redownloaded to the SD Card which was handy - however I don't know how google play will work with updates, whether it does a "smarter" check or not.
I can't find most of my apps. There's a few in Android/data. . But idk where the rest are at. Nothing in obb

opz what apps are you using?
As an update, I just updated an app through Play and it looks to have updated without a problem to the SD Card - I can't really poke around much to tell, but it launched and looks fine to me, and looks to still be mounted on the SD Card
Seems to be updating the apps on the SD card just fine. Cheers OP.

Thanks for confirming that - from the description of FolderMount it sounds like the phone should be unaware of it being external, so I was hoping there wouldn't be a problem

Seems to me that it's basically created a symbolic link pointing to the external SD card. Android shouldn't know the difference. That's just a guess tho, as I'm new to this Android malarkey
I had an update today for Iron Man 3, which is on my external card. It updated fine through Google Play, and when I launched it it just went "Verifying Files" then launched - no issues
The only problem I've found so far is with the gallery and hidden folders. I went into the gallery and hid a folder - a few times I couldn't get the option to show hidden folders. I rebooted, and can no longer either hide or show hidden folders - which is strange. The option is entirely missing now...may be unrelated, but not entirely sure.

So as im new to Android guys with this method you can download, install and run/play apps/games straight from a micro sd card thus freeing up the internal storage ?
Wow, I'm using it on S3, and it works much better than Directory Bind, than never did work on my S3 (I don't know why)!!!
Thkx a lot for this!!! Now I finally can have all my big games installed!!!

Sorry for the delayed response - yep, that's exactly what it does. Again it has some negatives as the external is a bit slower to load and has a higher chance of failure, but I know I certainly had no room internally - this allows me to use the 32GB External for games, apps, etc.
Link2SD
Hi all,
I installed Link2SD from market. Working nicely, also with updates and new apps.
Does this this foldermount option do the same, or is it more efficient?
Seems to do the same thing. No problems so far.

FolderMount allows you a choice in moving your large app data and obb folders and even media like the whatsapp photos folder to the external SD.
It's more flexible in what you can do.
