EDIT: We have NAND WRITE ACCESS NOW, NO NEED TO USE THIS ANYMORE! Do the NAND ROOT then Install AdFree from the Market!!!
Sadly we don't have access to write to the NAND on the Evo outside of the recovery console(yet). Some apps such as "AdFree" By BigTinCan do not work for us, as it doesn't have permission for this...
So we must do this manually...
Choose a hosts file!
You need to do is decide where to get your hosts file that will block them. I am attaching the one I am using, but you can find more all over the net
My hosts file (Which is both other options combined)
Another Option
Another option
Once you have one, put it into the tools Android Tools Directory (C:\AndroidSDK\tools for most people).
Copy the Hosts file to the device!
1. ) The phone must be rooted. (Thanks Toast)
2. ) Boot the phone into recovery (Where it says: RECOVERY INSTRUCTIONS).
3. ) Start up ADB Shell
Code:
C:\AndroidSDK\tools>adb shell
4. ) Mount the System Partition
Code:
# mount /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
5. ) Exit Adb Shell (Press Control+C)
6. ) Push the hosts.txt file to the device.
Code:
C:\AndroidSDK\tools>adb push hosts.txt /system/etc/hosts
7. ) Reboot Device
Code:
C:\AndroidSDK\tools>adb reboot
That's it, not hard at all. Sadly as time goes on, more ads will slip through the cracks, and you have to do this again.
Quick Q&A:
Q: How do I root the phone?
A: Read this thread.
Q: How do I boot into the recovery console?
A: Read this thread.
Q: How do I set up/what is ADB?
A: Read this thread.
Q: Is removing ads wrong?
A: Probably.
Q: What benefits do I get from removing ads?
A: Less distractions, faster load times, more of the actual app/game will be shown.
Q: I still have a question! How do I...?
A: Answer

my point being that
a) i've already posted this up. if tenny had searched, he would have found my thread and would have seen that his was not needed
b) i didn't post it in development, which is designed for kernels, ROMs, radios, etc
honestly, the evo forum is, hands down, the least organized forum that i've seen here at xda. so many people ran out and bought the evo and now come here, just post up without searching, ask the same questions over and over, etc. we end up with 75 threads all saying the same thing. it's ridiculous.

Well depends on what you consider development, some consider any writing to the system partition to be some form of development...
Still though I apologize for posting this after you, I did search but when I originally made this, just I got distracted and didn't submit the thread until later. Don't worry I never saw your thread and did all the research on my own.
But complaining about this thread in the wrong section TWICE does no good... the mods are moving threads and haven't moved this yet... honestly who cares quit *****ing and let's move on.

I do not think so. You need to boot into recovery for anything to stick, so if you can't then no.
hmmm...strange that when I push this hosts.txt file over to /system/etc/hosts, my entire device just hung. I have to revert back to original hosts file.
Any ideas?
I noticed it removed the ads from Jewels but it didn't remove them from chompSMS. Since I use text more than play games, I'd appreciate it if someone figures out how to remove the ads from chompSMS to let me know. O btw, I used the original hosts.txt file the OP uses.
i don't know about chompsms, but if you grab the hosts file from my thread, in q and a, it eliminated the ads from handcent (and everything else i run). the hosts file i posted was updated from adfree 3 days ago.
@vboy, do the push while in recovery mode and with /system mounted for write permissions. there shouldn't be any 'hang' because it's not done while the phone is in android.
Sorry I wanted to edit my post and let you know it works with chomp but as a new user I couldn't. The frame is there, but no more ad! Thanks

I'm pushing it in recovery mode and pushed over to evo as /system/etc/hosts. I think it caused some issue with my phone in routing for hosts. Whenever I start using apps with data, then it's start hanging. I removed and revert back to hosts file and all is good.
hey
I recently created an application called Android Recovery Manager
The version on the other thread is V1.0.
My sensation has been stolen, so for the moment I can't test future updates for the application, and I don't wanna give up on developing it...
I had plans for the next releases, and it really took me lots of efforts to finish it, so I'd like to know if anybody is interested in testing?
The update is ready for testing anyway
Tell me what you think
Thanks!
I am assuming from the name of the app you must be rooted and more than likely have Clockwork Mod Recovery on your device as well correct?

Not at all, you only need S-Off
The application manages your recoveries, it can flash any recovery you want.
You can either install a recovery image from your computer locally, or let the program download a recovery for you from the always up-to-date list of recoveries.
You can check the other post for screenshots and more info
Anybody?

So here is the download link.
Please extract the "RecoveryManager.exe" before using it as there will be files generated next to it.
So, I'll need you to install any recovery (Stock or Custom) and send me the log file when it has finished (You'll find an XML file in the Log folder in the same place as the application)
I hope I'm not asking a lot
Thanks
The application has been downloaded 2 times, can anybody tell me the results please?
test version
Downloaded two recovery files for the XE and flashed the CWM 5020 again on my device.
Rebooted into OS, no problems sofar.
The programm is selfexplaining and you can stop before flashing and think things over.
When I restart the programm and want to search for an recovery file on my HDD its going to the last folder I was using before,
thats OK

There is now a super thread over here with this root information and some more recoveries. I plan on expanding as more things are developed for the Rugby Pro.
I have added other hacks to this thread below the root download links. Enjoy.
The below guide outlines how to gain root on the Samsung Galaxy Rugby Pro (SGH-I547 ATT / Bell (Yes, Canada works!) / commanche). Please read through the full guide before attempting to root your device.
You will need ODIN v3.04 in order to gain root on the Rugby Pro (comanche), I will not post a link due to the nature of the package. Google has plenty of links for it.
BIG thanks to utkanos for all the help and making this a reality
Install instructions -- goldenlederhosen has provided some further information and detail about the below procedure here
Please read his post as well as the instructions before attempting this procedure
Install drivers from link below
Download necessary packages (clockwork recovery, root update) from the links below
Copy root update to your devices sdcard(s) -- Copy to both if external SD card is present
Charge phone to at least 80%
Power off the phone
Unplug from USB / Charger
Boot into download mode (Home + Volume Down + Power)
When asked if you want to continue, press Volume Up to enter download mode
Plugin phone and
Launch ODIN
Check the checkbox next to "PDA"
Click the PDA button
Select the comanche_cwr_6015_utkanos.tar.md5 file
Make sure only "Auto Reboot" and "F. Reset Time" are selected
Click start
Your phone will reboot one the flash is complete
You now have Clockwork Recovery, continue with the steps to get root
Power off your phone
Unplug from USB / Charger
Boot into Clockwork Recovery (Home + Volume Up + Power -- Release when Samsung logo appears)
Select "Install zip from sd card"
Select "Choose zip from sd card"
Navigate to zip
Select zip

Would you be willing to pull an image of the stock boot partition (dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p7) and PM me a link?
Also: check the OP, I've added some info on how to get tethering (after rooting) without the need for a dedicated ATT tethering plan.

Also, I'm interested in learning the process of how you created/edited the files , in order to root the Rugby Pro. I'm sure your busy, so pointing me toward a tutorial would be great.

I plan on using a stock boot image so I can put together an ODIN image that will flash the phone back to a stock state. If you root your phone or have a custom recovery / system / boot OTA updates will generally fail to apply. The best way to get an OTA update applied is to rollback to stock and install the OTA.

The boot partition should be the same across devices unless you make modifications.
I had to blindly update the boot partition on my device to get root, so I do not have an un-changed copy of it. In order to get an OTA update applied and to work with some Cyanogen / Clockwork Recovery stuff I will need a clean boot partition image.

I worked with a few people to get help putting together an ODIN image that allowed me to get custom recovery and the clockwork recovery update.zip. There is no general guide on the steps necessary.
If you are interested in diving into the custom rom / recovery stuff I will be doing some work with improving clockwork recovery for the Ruby Pro (commanche) and hopefully working on a Cyanogenmod 10 (JellyBean) port in the future. I am working on some items for the Rugby Smart (apache) at present, as soon as that stuff is taken care of I'll be focusing more on the Rugby Pro (commanche). If you are interested in taking a shot at updating the clockwork recovery for the commanche let me know and I can maybe point you in a few directions to get you going.

You probably know this, but here's where I downloaded Samsung's ROM (disguised again, & I'm pretty sure the new "c" version is for Canada) Just search for sgh-i547:

I am interested. Realize I have miniscule programming skills (http, xml & Google {now MIT} App Inventor).
Also, I did freeze TetheringProvision, but I rarely tether. Usually I only need to when it's raining & my home DSL slows too much. I'll let you know if I have any problems when I do finally try it.

I pulled that package as well. Unfortunately it is only the GPL components they are required to release, not the full ROM sources. It does contain the kernel sources which will be very helpful down the line.

Keep me in the loop. I tend to only tether for the purpose of my tablet when I'm not near a WiFi AP. I wanted to point it out just in case, better to have it working before it's necessary.
Let me know if you want a modded stock kernel . I'l be willing to help, even though I don't have the device on-hand.

I think we should be covered at the moment. The first priority will likely be getting a recovery nailed down and 100% before working on a customized kernel. I'm hoping to get recovery nailed sooner than later so we can do things like nandroid and similar before starting in on CM10 or another ROM.
I am also working on the Rugby Smart (apache) CM9/3.0 Kernel/CM10 stuff as well so my time with the Pro is limited at the moment. Hopefully the Smart stuff moves quickly so I can loop back around to the Pro quickly.

ETA, help, donation etc
I'm very interested in buying the Samsung Galaxy Rugby Pro for AT&T. However, there is no Cyanogenmod port for it yet. I really only want to have a phone if it can run a free ROM.
@kemonine96 et.al.:
When do you think a beta CM port will be ready?
I have not done any Android development and very little administration, but I am a seasoned Linux software engineer. Is there any way I can help with porting CM to this phone?
Finally, would a donation (kemonine96 has a paypal donations link) speed up the process? I can't afford to pay hundreds of dollars, but I could do something like 50....

You are not alone in that sentiment. I won't run a device I know won't receive a CyanogenMod port. The good news is as long as there is root, CyanogenMod can be made to work.

Most definitely, there are a few things that would help out a CyanogenMod port significantly. If you contact me via IRC (see OP) or via PM we can discuss some of the options and take it from there. Please note I leave my IRC connection active 24x7 so I may not respond right away.

As much as I may appreciate a donation, please hold off as I cannot commit to working on CyanogenMod for the Pro in a paid capacity I am comfortable with. I am working 50-60 hour work weeks at my day job so my free time is severely limited. I have every intention on bringing CyanogenMod to the Pro but it is a free time problem more than anything else.

have a look through these and see if you can find a kernel :

one small tip for future reference.
you should figure out how to fix your phone and have the tools and files on hand before making any modifications.
personally, i never do anything to my phone before thoroughly learning how to fix it, and if i cant find a way, then i dont mod it.
i see all the time on here, people frantic because they broke their phone and dont have a clue how to fix it.
in some cases there is no way to fix it because the files are not available, its really important to know that before you break it.

i never implied that you or anyone else wasnt "smart or intelligent"
i have broken my phones many times. the difference between me and a lot of users i see posting here is, i think about what would happen if i do something and it breaks the phone, before i actually do it. then i go and find out how to restore stock, and gather the files and tools first. then i actually restore stock, just so im sure i know how to do it first.
i see and help countless users here on xda, and frequently see people run to flash things they think they have to have right away. frequently that is followed by post pleading for help, because they failed to understand the journey, and chose to jump right to the finish line.
so yes, i agree, not breaking your phone doesnt make you smart or intelligent. knowing how to fix it, and helping others to fix theirs for many years, at minimum should gain those of us who help others a little respect, because we dont get paid to, nor have any obligation to, help anyone.

How come? Posting a Google link is actually helping? Then next time someone asks who's that guy, you tell him Google it. I did come here for a reason, which is finding a developer who can make a prerooted rom for me since it doesn't exist anywhere in the Web.
Anyway I found a solution I will post it here in case someone needed it:
1- Flash the tablet with stock rom (the one of your SM-T116bu) skip to 2 if you already have the stock rom and you only want to root the tablet.
2- Get a file explorer (ES explorer or root explorer).
3- Browse to system/lib and copy the whole lib folder and put it somewhere you can access it later.
4- Flash your tablet using the prerooted SM-T116nu rom (link is above).
5- Using the root explorer replace all files in the system/lib which has a 'camera' word in their name with the same files name from the lib folder of the stock rom, do the same with the files in system/lib/hw6- Reboot your device and the camera should work again.

How come? Posting a Google link is actually helping? because believe it or not, some people dont know the best key words to get the results that would actually be helpful, and a lot of times, they dont try at all. so occasionally i try to point them in the right direction, in the hope that they will actually try to help themself, because i cant be of further assistance. Then next time someone asks who's that guy, you tell him Google it. I did come here for a reason, which is finding a developer who can make a prerooted rom for me i can tell you right away, thats not going to happen. this site isnt a place where devs sit waiting for people to make request, so they can make stuff for them. xda is a place where you come to learn how to make it yourself, if you dont already know how, and support the community with it. since it doesn't exist anywhere in the Web.

Thanks, but your method soft bricks (black screen, can't operate the phone at all after booting) the phone until I flash the rooted or the official ROM again. There's no hw6 folder either, just hw and even changing only the lib files with camera in their names will also soft brick the phone.
I found a solution!!!
Restored my phone to the latest official ROM, then flashed the tiny file from the topic below using ODIN.

Worked like a charm!

The solution was so nice that I even made a short video explaining what I did with my Samsung Galaxy Tab E SM-T116BU from Brazil!!
I think XDA should let visitors enter their phone make & model....
Then a QR code would appear that users scan with the XDA app....
Once scanned, a download occurs and the user has a new 'update.zip' located on the sdcard....
All the user would have to do is update their phone to get root

Hello, and welcome to XDA!
Interesting concept, though I am a bit lost on the last step. I don't think there has ever been a rooting method that leverages stock recovery. Alternatively, if you have a custom recovery, the hardest parts have already been done and all that is left to flash for root (if it didn't happen by now) is SuperSU (and that may have a small handful of variations tyo allow for different architectures).
With that said (and if the latter is the case), not sure how that would be handled. I am confident if the idea was brought up, it would be mulled around for possibilities:

Please note, you will need to be a member to post there.
Hope this helps!
So, a singed .zip disguised as a O.T.A update wont work?
Weird... I wonder where I dreamed that up....

To many safeguards in place in stock recovery. If that did work, rooting would be so much easier. Maybe someone needs to figure out that method.
Have a good one.
A QR code could let users skip the 'download to computer-upload to phone' process for other downloads.
Wallpapers, ROMs, Recoveries, Apps, flashables.... all sorts of downloads that are intended to be put on an Android device! Long live the QR!
