I just bought a droid 2 global for my girlfriend and I am trying to figure out what apps would be safe to disable/backup. After the update her phone has been quite sluggish and it's driving me nuts listening to her complain. I figure the VZW apps can go, skype as well, cityid for sure, then i dont know after that. Whatever is bloatware and safe to remove I would like to.
pretty much everything except backup assistant but make a backup of the .apks because for future OTA updates you will need them
From all the apps installed, only CityID, Skype Mobile and Amazon MP3 are constantly lurking in memory (beside backup assistant of course). There might be one news widget that stays resident too.
Be careful what you disable though as if you kill something crucial phone may not boot. CityID, skype mobile and amazon are safe to disable. Keep them around shall you want to apply future OTA updates from Verizon/Motorola.

Root. Buy titanium back up. Back up. Then freeze or full on remove the programs. You can also use rom manager or another app that "fixes permissions" (a mac does the same thing using disc manager) and then reboot... that seems to make everything jive better.
Or (without root) you can download task killer (ax Droid) and put the widget on the home screen for her. I always remind her to turn it off at least once a day too.

I should say, I haven't tried to remove anything just freezer a bunch but I will and get back to you. Cheers!

I backed up CityID, AmazonMP3, and Skype through ADB. I also fixed permissions and things seem a bit smoother.
I was also able to backup and uninstall skybe, amazon mp3, and city ID. I wasn't able to uninstall blockbuster or kindle... but the three mentioned above worked fine for me. Cheers.

I stupidly forgot to uncheck auto updates for the programs I said I cldnt remove. I was able to back them up and uninstall once I unchecked auto update in the market and removed all updates to the apps - no problem. Phone runs fine with the third party bloatware removed. Cheers.

But where is the system update located? I checked on the verizon website and there is nothing there. Also, do you have to be a verizon customer to get the update?

Hey guys, So I rooted last night and installed titanium backup and removed amazon mp3 and city id.. then i did a test to see if i could simply restore them by titanium backup. I quickly found out that it could not do that. My phone is working fine I am just concerned for when any new update comes out that my phone wont be able to update.
What do I need to do to reinstall these apps as system apps. I have the .apk and placed it in System/App and installed, but it just installs as a normal application. I am sure I am missing something here.
Will amazon mp3 and city id be required when I do the next android update?
You might find a system dump in the dinc forum. For future reference use titanium pro to "freeze" all the unwanted apps meaning all things verizon. They can easily be un-frozen when you need to ota update.
good day. From my Fascinate using the XDA app.
Deleting Tmobile myaccount will cause your phone to go into infinite force closes making your phone unusable. If this happens, remove your SD card and SIM card, than reboot. After rebooting you will see your bloatware has returned and your phone will be back to normal. Using titanium backup, however, and "freezing" the app causes no problems and at least stops the background services from running. Deleting Telenav GPS navigator will NOT effect your phone's gps as one thread in general states, and freezing the "backup" system app which runs the tmobile contacts syncing account in titanium backup is good to do a well. Both of these apps leave 2 constant background services running.

Kind of a live and learn thing?
MyAccount is actually a nice app to have. Provides quick access to your account information as opposed to accessing via the web. not sure why you would want to remove it anyhow it's not really bloatware as much as it is a functional app design for tmobile customers.
Tmobile TV is another story.
Your right to a degree
its all depending on the person....I mean I personally never worry about my minute usage so i dont need to constantly check, so for me its useless, and if i really wanted to access my account id just go on my comp.... anyways like i said its all opinion
I deleted my account and just held the power button to reboot. No issues with it coming back and no more my account.

Of course, same as if you deleted Wifi Calling. That's why I hold down power until the phone reboots and then it doesn't force close anymore.
Why delete those? Especially MyAccount, provides useful information for sure!
I deleted My Account 1.0 and now have FC Issues, HELP!
I was trying to get rid of "My Account", AKA T-Mobile My Acount, to keep it from constantantly running in the background, but actually deleted "My Account 1.0", nad not the "My Account 4.?" with Titanium Pro... I tried to freeze them both but the program kept appearing in my task list, so I deleted the My Account 1.0 entry.
Soon as I did, I got a buzz... buzz buzz buzz... the buzzes of death... I now get force closes when ending a phone call, when trying to read SMS, and when trying to view my call log.
This is killing me, and I have no idea how to fix it...
Any experts out there, please help!

T-Mobil TV

Frozen via TitaniumBackup

Audio PostCard

WiFi Calling -- dosn't really work tbh
Write and go

Apparently freezing the "Wifi Calling" app dosn't actually work for me, even after rebooting.
Orionsmart, if you remove DriveSmart, does it remove the link for it inside the settings menu?
EDIT: I just went ahead and removed it, was tired of it running constantly without even using it, and the menu item remains. Small price to pay I suppose.

Is this confirmed?
I think i read in more then one thread that it will affect your GPS.
I only kept it because of this, so if i could be sure, i would remove it right away.

If I backup TeleNAV GPS with Titanium Backup, and then delete it, how can I restore it? I want to have as many MB free in Storage since the reason why I bought the phone was to access the Market and install lots of useful apps
Titanium backup created two files: com.telenav.app.android.telenav-20110314-174328.properties
com.telenav.app.android.telenav-20110314-174328.tar.gz
The tar.gz file has this inside:
\data\com.telenav.app.android.telenav\
inside I see 4 folders:
.\databases
.\files
.\lib
.\shared_prefs
What should I do now if I want to restore the Bloatware?
The custom Odin tar file that krylon posted works great includes root, and already has bloat removed. After I got it flashed on my phone there is a huge difference much smoother and faster than original stock.

Why would you want to do that ?
on the other hand, i think there is a stock software file floating around the forums somewhere..
If you want to replace something and you are rooted. Buy root explorer from the market and get your hands on the. Apk (for this phone) and really install the apps you want. Otherwise if you root first then make a back up of apps with titanium backup from the market, you can then also select the ones you want and either delete or freeze the ones you don't want to keep.

Just wanted to say that i removed Telenav with no ill consequences.
Thanks for the info.
I have a new, unlocked and rooted D2G. I didn't use the stock phone for very long before I installed the Fission Rom. I didn't pay close attention to what was on the phone to begin with. I wasn't thinking clearly; I thought that it would just stay behind and I would have the option to uninstall it once rooted.
I realize most of it is considered bloatware. But I swear I saw a couple things that interested me. I can't remember what they were, though. Does anyone have a screenshot of the app drawer of a stock D2G? Or just a list? It would be much appreciated.

Thank you. Looks like it was Swype and Skype I was after.
Skype I already have downloaded. Swype, I looked for in the market and couldn't find. How can I get it on my phone?
also, this 'mobile 3g hotspot' thing looks interesting. Currently I tether using USB but maybe that is pointless. Is there a way to get this, or a comparable free app?
To use tethering besides VZW stock app, you need root access (which you probably have already). There are various tethering apps available on the Market.
Swype Beta for Android is available on Swype web site.
Wifi Tether is the app I use
Verizon removed these from the market I believe.
Google search "wireless tether for android"
First link, go to the "downloads" tab and download a stable release
Copy to your sd card and launch the file to install.
lost my widgets
I used Titanium Backup to back up my apps to my SD card, and then tried to uninstall the blockbuster app on my Droid 2 Global. It seems like at the same time that the user downloaded apps' widgets stopped functioning, and the phone will no longer create new widgets for the apps that i have downloaded either. Any help?
At about the same time, I used ROM Manager to try to back up my stock ROM, it rebooted my phone both times that I tried it, I don't know if that would have something to do with the widgets? Any help would be much appreciated
I hate to ask this but I need help getting rid of the bloatware. I went to fp5 stock and then installed the Tweaked 3 beta 2. everything seems fine but I still have a bunch of Verizon bloatware hanging around like verizon navigation, etc. Is there a debloated FP5 rom somewhere or can someone point me to a list of bloatware that can be removed and how to manually remove them. I assumed I could delete the .apk file from sys/apps but then I couldn't find some of the applications, not by the familiar name anyway. Can I install fp1 debloated rom without losing fp5?
Edit: Problem solved thanks to the great help of others
If you installed Tweaked 3.0 Beta 2 you shouldn't have those bloat apps. Reinstall, ensure you mount system.

Thats what I thought, but there they are. I will reinstall Tweak. Thanks for the help.
Perhaps I am asking the wrong question. Most of the unwanted programs are gone. What I still have that I don't want are some Verizon programs - Backup Assistant plus, Mobile Hotspot, VZ Navigator (and possibly verizon SSO engine but I don't really know what that is).
after re-installing tweaked 3 beta 2 they are still there. I don't recall having them before FP5 and since then my battery usage is crazy and I think its because android isn't sleeping.

Can others verify this? Mobile hotspot is there (too much work and not worth removing), but the vzw navigator and backup assistant shouldn't be.
Verizon SSO lets you use verizon stuff like my verizon and nfl mobile... basically it tells those apps that you have a verizon phone and account.

Mine doesn't have VZNavigator or Backup Ass't.
They are gone now. After re-installing Tweaked 3 beta and re-booting they were still there. I went into settings>applications>manage applications, pulled up the backup assistant, cleared data, pressed to delete updates (like I have done before), got the message that removing updates allows the original app to be used, pressed continue, it said uninstalling and then said uninstall failed (like it had when I tried this before) but when I went back to the list of applications neither backup assistant nor VZ navigator are there anymore. I have re-booted twice and they appear to be gone for good.
Thanks to all for the help. I don't think there is anything more I can say about what I did but if there are any questions I can try and explain it more clearly if it helps anybody understand what happened (or I could just be crazy).
Shouldn't have happened, that's an anomaly. But I think I've either experienced that or heard of it, been here too long to remember

I've got a Maxx on 12.15.15 that I successfully ran RockMyMoto as well as MotoWpNoMo but I can't figure out how to remove the bloat from the phone. Also, what other cool things can I do now?
Go to Play Store, purchase Titanium Backup Pro..the app. will freeze, uninstall, backup all your apps in a click or two, (after setup on your device) or it will backup one app at a time of your choice..without Root, SafeStrap, Root Explorer, Titanium Backup Pro, a device is so limited, the XT1080M has awesome power, once it's unleashed with the above mentioned apps..and SafeStrap, I cannot bear to think, not having SS..but Root (as you are) must be obtained first..Rooting your device opened up a whole new, way more powerful device..You will not regret gaining Root..
Advice..stay on 4.2.2_12.15.15..wait until KK is proven stable, and can be Rooted (if ever)..KK can be rooted now..but flaming hoops have to be jumped thru to gain Root..and the chance of bricking your device is very high..once on KK, there is no return to JB..

Thanks for the info on this Last night I did install and run TB in order to uninstall specific apps, however when I look in the app section of settings it seems they are still there, they have just been moved into the "SD" card. Does this mean they are gone or did I do something wrong? I hadn't heard of SafeStrap before so thanks for the heads up, I'll look into that now.

Make sure you have TB setup properly..to uninstall..Also..be sure to reboot your device..many apps that uninstall..need to recollect / refresh your system information, such as apps..
Another app. I use is "Easy Uninstaller Pro"
Another way, is with system settings..do this >> settings \Apps\scroll to right to > All ..then choose the app to uninstall..

I just got my Droid Maxx and have not rooted it yet. But I have used TB a lot on other devices. Just my preference but I never uninstall. I just freeze the stuff I don't want. The reason being I've had a couple of instances in the past where I thought I didn't need something but doing away with it killed something unexpected. For example on my old phone (Droid 3) I figured I did not need the built in voice mail app because I had my voice mail set to go to Google Voice. But I quickly discovered that freezing the built in voice mail also caused the dialer to not work...so I couldn't make any calls. But since it was just frozen, all I had to do was unfreeze it. . Another example is when I froze the camera app because I was using a third party app. With the built in camera app frozen, the video camera app didn't work either. I have no clue why but it must be reliant on the built in camera app somehow. Not being a developer myself, I don't always (make that usually don't) understand the inter-dependencies so freezing is a quick, simple, and completely safe method that gets the job done and is easy to undo any changes that cause a problem.
Sorry I can't help you with uninstall since I don't do that.

No need to apologize at all! Thanks for the input you've given, the thread has almost 150 views and only a few people have taken a moment to reply so I'm thankful for that in itself I'll look into freezing as well. As long as it removes it from my app list and it makes sure it won't run in the back ground, I'm happy with that!

I used to delete the system apps as well bit I don't bother anymore and here is why. Your system partition is separate from the SD partition meaning if you have say 20 gigs on SD and delete a gig of system apps your SD memeory won't increase. All it will do is make the OS smaller but it doesn't matter you can't use that memory anyway. Just freeze what you don't need and forget about it.
