I've been trying to decide between the G-Tablet and the Archos 101. I definitely want a 10.1 inch screen and am fine with rooting and installing custom ROMs. For those that have the G-Tablet would you recommend it? I had been leaning more toward it but then I realized after tax it would be about 430-445 so not far off from Ipad pricing. I was hoping to keep the price down but I've read good and bad things about it. Most of the bad seems just in regards to it as it is stock.
I guess I'm lucky because I'm stock with LauncherPro and a couple of other addons and have not seen the wifi or boot looping problems. I want to root but will stay stock to see what the updates are from Viewsonic.
The only thing I'm really disapointed in is that there is no Android Market and it doesn't look like there will be. The market that is being installed tomorrow is Pocketgear and I'm not impressed with it at all. I have searched for many things and have yet to find anything I was looking for. Maybe it will be different once it is on the Gtablet but I'm not going to hold my breath.
All in all I'm very pleased with the Gtablet. And with the support of the people here I'm sure it will only get better.
I had pre-ordered the 101, then found this device. First off, you might want to check out this forum, as the Gtab has been mentioned a few times:
http://forum.archosfans.com/viewforum.php?f=74&sid=14fbe18a3bde1b86944379a04044ace9
Here's my take on the 101 / Gtab pros and cons.
- Archos has a better media player and codec support. That's their bread and butter, so it's expected.
- The 101 is 256MB of RAM with a less powerful CPU than the GTab. This puts the GTab on more of the bleeding edge, with the issues that arise because of that. But it might be a better candidate for 2.3 or 3.0. Maybe.
- The 101 is locked down tight, as far as the firmware is concerned. The GTab is not and has an APX mode that makes it virtually unbrickable. Mods galore may arise, because of that.
- The prices are similar, assuming you compare the 16GB and you get the GTab on sale.
- The bad screen angles on the GTab seem to also affect the 101, from what I've read.
- Neither have the actual Marketplace, although I'm sure the 101 will get a hack sooner or later.
- Archos has been pretty good with ROMS, so far. Viewsonic support remains to be seen.
- The GTablet is popping up all over the place, in B&M. That means some decent return policies - Staples has a 14 day return on it, for example. The Archos is not as easy to find in B&M stores, at the moment.
- The Gtablet has Froyo today, and it has an (unofficial) Flash apk today.
I guess it's "pick your poison".
So I picked one up yesterday at Staples and am going to revert back to stock and return it... Here are my reasons why...
- Screen viewing angles are awful. Sitting at a table with the GTab laying flat is an impossible angle to view with.
- The device is heavy to hold. I found my hands hurting trying to use it while holding it.
- The image is not very crisp. I found that it hurt my eyes to use the device for long periods of time.
Again these are my perceptions and don't take them for anything beyond a personal review. I have been using a HTC Hero with CM6.1 and have been very pleased.
I am either going to get an iPad, wait for a better WiFi only tablet next year, or just stick with my trusty Netbook.
PS...Is there a link to instructions for reverting back to stock? Thanks!
If you haven't done anything fancy like install a ROM. You can just hit the factory reset under settings. If you have been playing around, then there is a stock TnT vanilla ROM on forum tegratab website (I can't link it) which you can install just like any ROM.
I don't know how to get rid of Clockworkmod (NVflash?), but I can't imagine the average Staples employee will dig that deeply.
I'm probably going to take mine back this weekend. I want to give the new OS update a fair shake. But otherwise I agree with you on virtually all counts.

Try the vanilla ROM - it's in the development area. It should get you very close to stock. And also do a data wipe, of course.

Thanks for the ROM info. I am just going to return it at this point. The viewing angle and heft can't be resolved. And I appreciate the feedback on the Archos 101 with regards of viewing angle. A few friends tried the GTab yesterday when I brought it over, they were all unimpressed.
These tablets need to bake a little longer in the oven!

Out of box the device sux, but with TnT 1.03 and market hack, it is solid. Archos 101 apparently uses the same display, so no better, but the device is lighter. Weak device though compared to the power of Tegra 2 and 512mb ram.
If you showed this device with stock rom- now wonder people were not impressed- yikes

Besides wake up time... A necessary evil... This pad rocks with TnT lite .3 cannot wait for 2.0 at this rate.
TNT lite .03 + Flash + gapps install = Keeper
If you are OK with flashing ROMS then get it. With TNT lite and Flash, I'm willing to keep it in spite of the viewing angles.
As far as weight is concerned: It doesn't feel heavier than an IPAD. Most of that weight is battery. Great battery life by the way.
My first road test of the gtablet tonight. I am flying to Vegas with the gtablet and the Archos 43. I will let you know how they do. For TSA screening purposes, will they want me to remove the gtablet from its case and run it through the xray like a laptop?
I was showing it off with CM 6.1 Beta. That viewing angle is a deal breaker for me. With regards to the weight, are you saying it weighs as much as an iPad?
Not sure why people are so surprised by the viewing angles. If you want the display of an ipad or even a galaxy tab, you're gonna have to buy an ipad or galaxy tab. The display on the g is fine for me, for now. When the big name tablets start coming out like htc and moto, that's when I'll expect more out of tablets. I'll also expect to pay more than 399 too.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
The problem is that one can't be sure until they have it in their hands. I would think that a normal operating position (on a desk with user in front of it) would be something to expect out of any tablet. I would love a Galaxy Tab but I refuse to pay a carrier for mobile internet service. If they released a WiFI only Galaxy Tab, I would run to the store to get it.
The viewing angles aren't as good as the iPad, but not so bad that it really bothers me that much. Maybe it'll get more annoying after a while - I'd eventually like an Android tablet with an IPS or other higher end LCD screen, but this will do for now in terms of hardware.
For me, $420 (including tax) for the G Tablet and a carrying case sounded like a good deal, for the early adopter set on XDA-developers who like to customize and live on the bleeding edge.
There is no way I would recommend this device in its current form to friends or family, of course, until the software improves markedly.
I also don't think the drivers etc. are doing full justice to the Tegra 2 at this point. My Nexus One actually gets about 5-10% higher scores on Quadrant. That shouldn't be. And for a dual-core chip, it oddly lags when the system is waking up from sleep mode and runs choppily sometimes thereafter - some sort of memory management bug.
Such are the joys of the bleeding edge.
i would have liked for it to have better viewing angles too, it definitely can be a pain to have to look at a certain way. but i usually keep it on a little stand when on my desk, i'm trying to not let the screen thing bother me too much. the software and stock ui are both jokes and i knew that going in. the blue weather homescreen is horrid, i like a nice clean and clutter free homescreen. i'm just staying confident that the boys here at xda are gonna make this tablet a nice user experience. i think it scored around 1900 on quadrant when i ran it on the g, i usually get around 1400-1500 on my incredible. i think the g-tablet should be doing way better though.
I have been driving the g tab since last Saturday and I would recommend it as a keeper. I tried the Huawei S7 for a day and ran away from it screaming. By comparisons, I have had good success side loading most of my favorite apps here without compromise. The device is modder friendly as have been my last dozen or so phones. Rooting was quick and easy. I have some market apps available, but for those not open, I load them on my Liquid, then use Titanium, to "restore" them onto the g tab.
If you are willing to do as something as super simple as install TnT Lite 1.03, or the coming 2.0- YES! Here is copy from part of another post:
Gtablet with TnT Lite 1.03, Flash app & market fix:
1. Best performing Flash of any current Android device: CHECK!
2. Market: CHECK!
3. Great sound quality: CHECK!
4. Smooth browser: CHECK!
5. Comics & PDFs, regardless of size, smooth: CHECK!
6. PSX4Droid smooth for 3D games: Using PSX4Droid 1.5, CHECK! (1.7 sucks)
7. Capcom 1 & 2 and ALL Neo Geo games playing super fine: CHECK (TigerMAME)
8. Wifi tether works great
Archos 101 has a 3630 and half the ram of the Droid X. Droid X does not play Flash as smoothly, nor the games in items 6 & 7 anywhere near as well.
Gtablet rocks- warts and all- Looking forward to TnT Lite 2.0

According to Apple the Ipad weighs 1.5 to 1.6 depending upon model. The Viewsonic site lists gtablet at 1.55 pounds.
I just got my G tab!
I really had to try Viewsonic's ROM to see if it was as bad as everyone said. Unfortunately, it is!
I've tested it for 10 min but got bored.
For all G tab users afraid to root this device, let me tell you that I l'm no hacker but installed Vegan 5.1, market fix and adobe flash in 20 minutes, with zero problems.
If I had to compare it to the iPad I would say that the GTab looses in screen quality, style and accessories.
But in my opinion, at $380 the G is the better product.

Screen viewing angles leave some to be desired, but just til it a degree or two more and you're good to go.
Accessories I definitely agree with - we need clam shell cases, we need music docks with HDMI out and built in speakers, we need car adapters.. etc.
The accessories I have/will have are:
- Griffin Technology Stylus
- Samsonite case
- Zpad dock (apx and it2steve sell these)
- Zpad case (apx sells these)
- Spare home charger (it2steve sells these, I hear they're the same as the ts LG portable DVD players: DP371,DP450,DP371B)
You're right about installing a custom ROM, it's a no-brainer. When I first got the device yesterday, I thought it was great as it was, until after a few minutes I wanted more out of the home screens. Then I found the Toshiba Launcher (ToshibaHomeMenu.apk) which is so simple and awesome.. it really changed everything. It forces you to have 5 screens, but you can tap any "dot" and it will take you to that screen. Using Multi Picture Live Wallpaper, each screen gets its own wallpaper as well. Pairing those two together, alongside Smart Taskbar.. and it's a blazing fast tablet with tons of functionality.
Had mine a few days. My phone is a DX and I never understood why people were so up in arms about a locked bootloader. I mean you can bootstrap and be good to go...
Spending the last few days working with the Gtab, props to Viewsonic/TnT for letting us do what we want with our devices and really embracing Open Source. It just makes everything easier and ultimately better.
I have to say that i was a bit skeptical about the Gtab, the second i put VEGAn on it I was hooked.
The viewing angle issue is the only drawback but it's by far a show stopper.
this kicks an iPad's butt any day.

My other concern is that the capacitive buttons don’t light up. Sometimes it is difficult to play with it in the dark.
Despite that, I’m playing 1080p (Rockplayer) with absolutely no lag, all my favorite apps are installed and working.
I’ll probably try the latest TNT just for kicks! And this is what I love about this device: customization, freedom to change ROM’s at will, adobe flash, stunning live wallpapers and widgets

Dropbox for easy file transfers and sharing
There are a ton of other apps/games that also added value to this tablet for me but the above 5 are the ones I use most often.
I hope you get as much out of your gTab as I have gotten from mine.

There are some modders here that have added little LEDs next to the buttons to make them light up and others that have added a little bead next to them so you can feel them in the dark but with VEGAn you have those buttons on the status bar as soft buttons so you might be able to get by using those.
I am currently looking at buying an Android Tablet. I heave looked at a few but not sure which one to pick.
What I am looking for is the following:
Android 2.2 or better
10" screen
web cam
multi-touch screen
good battery life
1080p HD playback is a positive
access to the Android Market would be best but not a necessity
<$400
fastest processor possible
If anybody has any ideas or suggestions I would appreciate any feedback.
I have looked at the following but I am open to other suggestions
Archos 101
Viewsonic GTablet
Nook Color
Samsung Galaxy Tab - dont need the cellular connection and would really like a larger screen
I have a ViewSonic G Tablet running TnT Lite 4.2.1. Installed LauncherPro on it, and I'm loving it. Playing Dungeon Defenders, Raging Thunder, Pocket Legends, Angry Birds, Crazy Snowboard, all perfectly at full screen. WiFi connection works great, Dolphin HD Browser loads all sites with flash (Even works on Hulu for the most part, some videos on Hulu I have had to reload once or twice to get them to play).
USB keyboard plugs in and works flawlessly, has read all of my USB Hard drives without issue (Fat32). Dumped photos off of my Sony digital camera right onto the internal tablet storage.
All in all, for under 400 bucks this tablet is a steal. And being the only Tegra2 one on your list (not sure if it's the only one on the market now other than the Adam), I'd say go for it. The thing really flies once you get a custom rom on it like TnT Lite (or other).
You should decide if you are looking for something that "just works" or if you want to tinker.
On that list, I'd put the Galaxy Tab in the "just works" column, with all of the others in the "tinker" column.
I love my gTablet, but wouldn't recommend it to anyone that isn't a tinkerer. It is an awesome platform and the software gets better by the day. Given the specs you list and the price point, it is a solid option. You have several great choices of Android builds (CM, Vegan, TNT Lite) and the stock build is pretty usable these days.
If you get any of the "tinker" tablets, prepare to spend all of your free time for a few weeks flashing new roms, trying new apps, testing every little tweak - and finally settling into something usable for you. For me, the time was a bit frustrating - but the roms are much more mature now, and I suspect you'd be up and running in no time.
Given that Tegra2 looks to be THE big Android tablet platform for 2011, I expect my gTablet to keep up with the big boys.
I can't emphasize enough however that the screen sucks - thats the big difference IMHO between the $400 price point and the $600+ price point of the upcoming Android tablets. If you can live with it, its a great value.
Thanks for the info. I was leaning towrds the GTablet. Just wanted to get some.solid opinions of what I was looking at. I am very much a tinker at heart been flashing cell phone since 2004 constantly re-installing an OS on my laptops. I just recently found a ROM that works for me on my Samsung Captivate, which is why I want an Android tablet instead of an iPad or a windows version. The OS is so customizable you can make it your own.

looking for a cheap 7" tab for my son. zt 180? any thoughts. Just looking for something to put kindle on and allow him to play some games and music.
thanks
zt 180?
I would reccommend the NookColor($250), I'm thinking about getting one after I sell My GTab. Want to see about the Flyer as well.
Nook Color also has a good developer community backing. Pretty easy root from what I've heard.
The Vpad7 is pretty good. It received some crap reviews but only because its an older arm processor and not Tehran based. It is one of the most functional devices I have used out of the box and has very little bloatware installed on it. Over all its a sound device and very functional. I gave mine to my dad for use as a book reader and it is perfect for what he needed.
I've been meaning to ask the same question myself.
The Viewpad 7 seems ok, but it costs more than a Gtab doesn't it?
The Nook is a little tempting, but I think I'm a little spoiled by the Gtab ...
Would be interested to see what others suggest/recommend.
Jim
I can appreciate what you're saying. The NC, to me, just "feels better constructed" than some others I have handled. Solid. Add in that there is an excellent developer base and active community and it would be an excellent choice for now and into the future. ("Future" being a relative term for tech!) Much would depend on what the intended use would be of course. The dual boot Viewpad is great IF you absolutely need windows. (Note I said "need" and not "want"). I suspect the NC would serve your son well and provide him a nice "starter platform" as he grows and wants to move up.
HTH
+1 on any Nook Color recommendations. Well constructed, SDmicro slot, and we already know its capable of honeycomb. ***Deleted 3G incorrect info ***

No offense to China but don't do it! haha. At least get him something where you can return it easily if it's defective.
Get the Coby Kyros 7015 for your son. You can find it at retail stores like Frys.
Velocity Cruz any good? I can get one for $100
I do believe that with the Cruz you're starting hobbled in a way. The Reader and the Tab run 2.0 and not Froyo so flash would be just one thing missing. I know only one person who got one and returned it same week. And if you "choose" (read: fall for) ordering direct from China be ready to wait.....and wait.......and wait....for delivery. I ordered a replacement AC adapter over a month ago...guess? Waited over a month then cancelled. Seems it's ALWAYS Chinese New Year there slowing the mail.
Edit - Spring for the NC. You (and son) won't be disappointed I'm betting.
I was also in your shoes - wanted a 7" device for my father while he was doing his dialysis treatments. Basically I was looking for something a little better than just a reader. I was in Kmart and saw the Coby 7015 and got it for about $150 on black friday. I thought it was a cool little box it ran about everything, had HDMI out and good battery life. The downside - resistive touch screen. Resistive touch will have you begging for a capacitive touch screen. Resistive touch is okay for a mfg environment or a GPS device - but for a daily tablet NO. You keep wondering if you pressed hard enough. Also Angry birds runs but screen fonts are broken - meaning they do not display correctly. I rooted the thing with Z4root and loaded just about everything and used Zeam as desktop. Because of the liberal return policy during the holidays I un-rooted it and brought it back to stock state and then returned at Kmart with no restocking fee.
Velocity Cruz - This is a joke. The app store is not even an appstore but a website. It has 2.0 and no chance for 2.1 based on lack of Arm processor. I cruised forums for a hack or roms - none. Good thing about it - it has a capacitive touch screen. Returned to Best Buy and no restocking fee.
Barnes and Noble Color Nook. Bought rooted and kept for my dad. Great little cool design and battery life is great. Used nookie boot image to root it and loaded Zeam for the desktop and a bunch of apps for my dad besides ereader apps. Other positives for the NC is has support here at XDA and the NC wikis out there.
Bottom line NC is the best deal for $250. Sure I got a chance to play with others and learned what I liked and what I did not like - but the form factor, weight, and size are good for a android device that was just suppose to be a reader with some other light functions. You will not be disappointed with this device.
PS - also tried like hell to get Archos 70 but you could never get stock. They sold out or never had inventory. The Archos 7" tablets in store were with the "home tablets" versions with Android 1.5. The Archos 70 would have been easier to hack but the NC was available with inventory at launch. I personally own 2 gtablets in my family and with the support of XDA - they have become great devices. Also have an IPAD(jail broken) - love and hate it - especially hate having to use iTunes to get content on the thing.
I would check craigslist for the NC as well you may find someone who bought one thinking it was going to be better than the kindle and wants to get rid of it.
Another positive for the NOOK is accessories, that was one thing with the GTab, hard to find accessories. I mean the nook color is for sale at walmart and is from a big mftr so accessories should be easy to find. You might read up on what apps it comes with too, it seems like I remember some stock apps geared towards kids.
lol...can i run kindle on NC? I really want kindle because my wife has an account and i want my son to be able to use her account to buy books.

Yes - Market is there and therefore the kindle app is there as well.
Check HH Gregg, I saw a 7" tab there as closeout for $99.00 can't remember what the model was.
For the Money, I'd have to agree that the Nook Color is the best deal in 7" right now...
The IPS screen is lovely and it is fairly simple to hack and get the Market on it...It's even been overclocked...
Nook Color is hands down the best 7" tab option simply because of the ips screen. Name another sub 400$ device with an ips screen?
I want a Nook Color so bad, does anyone know if it runs Honeycomb well? the only reason i want Honeycomb is because Nookiefroyo doesnt have softkeys.... Or does it?

As the Nook Color has only one button on the face (beside the Vol Up/Down on the edge), I believe it is all soft buttons and not re-mapping...
fyi. If you have decided to buy the nook color, it is on sale in Ebay only $199.

Almost pulled the trigger on the Ipad2, but read about backlit LED bleeding around the edges. Do like the front and back camera and killer screen. Will hold off on Ipad2 purchase to see if any more hardware issues surface.
My Gtablet has stock 3318 stock with 3.14 enhancement and is quite stable and does everything I need to trade stocks and options, listen to music, watch videos, yahoo mail, Gmail, Facebook. Can't find any reason to change ROMs. If it ain't broken, why fix it.
Google says Froyo isn't optimized for tablets, but FROYO with DEV support on the Gtab is a clear winner and is better than the current Xoom with Honeycomb which still isn't optimized for tablets.
With my modified Solo case, my Gtab is very secure and it helps keep it at the right viewing angles 95% of the time.
Still looking for another tablet, mainly for the wife. Will wait to see what Samsung and other releases will be for the summer and their pricing. But the Gtab is still the dollar for dollar champ and a keeper. Bottom line it works as advertised FINALLY.
Totally agree with you abour value. See my lengthy post at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12064884&postcount=27 for thoughts on the Nook Color as a potential second tablet. Women tend to like the 7" form factor a lot, is all I would add to that.
I am also looking to buy another tablet (Gtab) maily because wife likes so much that I barely have my hands on it.
It is running 3589 i think... the latest stock rom and it running fine.
Personaly, i will change to other rom but she likes to have grocery list, contact list, calendar and etc.
Like you, can wait for honeycomb after devs working on it.
