Did u try using a different keyboard?

Since i use vegan tab and have all the soft buttons on the screen at all time (home, menu, back) is there anyway to disable the capacative ones so that i dont actually hit them while holding the tab?
bump ^^^ anyone??? robeet?
I asked something like that earlier, but no one responded. There's a thread under Themes and Apps about Settings Catcher. Maybe a concept like that could be used, in the opposite way (assign invalid activities), to essentially make the keys do nothing?
Jim
This is definitely possible to do.
Use Root Explorer to go to /system/usr/keylayout. I am guessing it's the file gpio-keys.kl in that directory.
For a guide as to how this works, check out this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695936
I haven't tried it yet, but I'm guessing you can map those keys to something like ENDCALL that doesn't have a meaningful activity associated it with it on our tablets. Or maybe there's a null activity or something like that.
You'll have to experiment a bit. I haven't tried any of this yet myself.
hmmm, pull out the device back and unclip it?
Seriously though, I'm not certain. Possibly it's linked to the file /usr/keylayout/tegra-kbc.kl. So you might be able to REM out some of these and it could actually disable the tactile buttons.
How would you get out of a full screen app that hides the status bar?

Yeah i didnt think of that. damn... its just annoying when im in the browser or something and i hit it by accident
I was hoping to find an app/hack that would let me set the duration of a soft key press required to register as a stroke. It would then be easy to make a widget to turn the delay on and off for times when you know you will be more prone to bump the buttons.

I'm bumping this to see if anyone has any ideas on the above or disabling them completely. I (or one of my kids) *always* bump one of the capacitive buttons while using the gtab. It is frustrating, infuriating even, when you're in the middle of something and BAM, you have to start over.
TIA!
If you could get rid of the buttons you can just use button savior. I'm using the zeam launcher in fullscreen and barely ever touch the buttons on the side now

I use 'Button Remapper' to map the hard buttons to 'focus' which effectively disables them. I then use 'Buttton Savior' to provide on-screen buttons.
Works well and ends the frustration of the buttons not being back-lit or accidently hitting them when holding the tablet.
Thank you! I think that will do the trick. Do you use the galaxy tab version?
ETA: just searched the market from my Droid and saw a third vanilla version of button remapper. I will go with the assumption that its this one.

First of all, is it even possible to assign soft keys to unlock the phone?
I've tried adding "WAKE_DROPPED" to "key 102 HOME" in "pyramid-keypad.kl" but the home button doesn't unlock the phone even after a restart. I've also tried pulling/pushing the file via adb in recovery mode.
Bumping...
My first post here (and unfortunately, not such a useful one), but here goes a soft bump from me too
Please... can someone shed some light on this? I just don't want to use the Home or Power button(s) to unlock my SGS2. Shake or Voice (LOL) or Soft Keys would be cool... B-)
Thanks in advance
EDIT: Oops, just realised it's a thread for HTC Sensation :dumb me:
There is a kernal mod out there I think for hd2 where you swipe the soft keys and will unlock and lock
Lol, hd2 doesn't have soft keys.
But you are.correct, its kernel mod. Show considered doing it but changed his.mind IIRC.

I had completely forgotten about this thread.. I found an app which allows you to unlock with the proximity sensor. But I haven't used it since starting this thread so I can't remember the name. I quit using it because it would unlock when I put it in my pocket.

^^ Haha yea, I can understand. It might have gotten more painful than a solution really. But, please interrogate your neurons... and try to recollect the name of the app. Please please please. Thanks
i can see that this mod would be kinda cool, however u realise that it would mean keeping the capacitive soft buttons powered on all the time ready for input, basiclly it would stop deep sleep and keep the soft keys draining the battery non stop...
When I used the landscape keyboard to send an SMS message from my Skyrocket, the default layout of the message composition screen has the "attach" button above the "send" button, meaning I can't directly click send. I either have to go "back" to dispose the keyboard to reveal the "send" button, or carefully scroll the narrow view-port above the keyboard to reveal it.
When I used SwiftKey, I believe it had a button on the keyboard that managed to send the message. But I'm trying to use either stock or the ICS port keyboard since SwiftKey's space-bar was too narrow for my fat thumbs.
Is anyone else plagued by this? Any clever solutions?

OP: if in landscape mode, after you type your message, hit the BACK soft button.... that will hide keyboard and show the attach option abovd the send option
I will agree that's annoying as hell. Never noticed it bc I don't type in landscape. Thank god I don't.
In landscape hit done and it will send if i remember right

When I used Swype, it had a "Done" button I believe. But I couldn't handle Swype's narrow spacebar. Why doesn't the stock Android 2.3.5 keyboard have a "Done" button, or the back-ported ICS keyboard (shown above)?
This is so frustrating! Seems like just generally poor designing by samsung. The SGS1 didnt have this issue and a part of me wants to pull the API of the messaging off of my Captivate on to my skyrocket. Does anyone know if this is possible

How did the problem occur in the first place? did you drop the phone? is the screen cracked/clean, did you press on the buttons too hard, did you have any water damage etc, there might be some fix for this.
^^ maybe a recalibration might work, but I have no idea how to do it on 9003. VolUp+Power button takes me to calibration menu on my spice mi-280.
I've been reading about these capacitive buttons being a huge battery drain for ICS roms for some time. Lot of people have been posting (in other forums) on ways to disable these keys to improve battery life. I might do it myself later on to see if it helps my battery life.

screen was clean, i use my phone gently...
no any water damage.
dont know how it happens..
but when it occurs first time the capacitive keys are disabled automatically..
after that i used button savior app and der is no any problm..
but after couple of weeks those capacitive buttons started working again nd problem of self activation also started...
hence i m now trying to cmpletly disable those capacitive buttuns..
i tried zip of nexus s galaxy s3 & galaxy s2 but didnt workd for my phone..
m tired now...
thanx for giving attention.
After reading a bit into this, I suggest something that might work.
Again emphasizing that try it at your own risk.
Go to /system/usr/keylayout/ and find file sec_touchscreen.kl.
Make a copy of this file as a backup.
Open this file as a text file in any text editor.
You'd see something like
key 139 MENU VIRTUAL
key 158 BACK VIRTUAL
Edit it by adding a "#" symbol in front of both lines
#key 139 MENU VIRTUAL
#key 158 BACK VIRTUAL
This is similar to what is suggested for sgsII.
See if you wanna try it out.
Also, note, this will only disable those keys, not the key lights. We can work on that once this one is done.
Hope this works *fingers crossed*

i did as u say and the capacitive buttons r not working now but i m still unable to touch on the screen..
it sounds funny but when i m connecting my phone to my laptot with data cable touch on screen works fair..
but when screen gets off problm occurs..
by d way thanx for ur help i can use my phone atlst
Not able to touch on the screen? I didn't understand this problem?
I had the same problem, disansamble the phone, take apaprt the touchscreen with the display from the chassis(verry gentle, you will risk to separe the glass of the lcd from it's back wich can remain stick to the chassis, a good sollution is to heat a little the touch before doing the separation) and with a cutter cut about 1mm from the signal traces for those buttons, the signal traces are imprimed on to a palstic foil wich is sticked to the touch.
That's the way i solved the problem. Good Luck.

How about you flash a clean CM9? I'm guessing that you have an app that's interfering since you tried to fix your problem and plugging in the USB cable turns off that app.

Hey,
My multitasking button got fuxked up and it making the multitasking screen and split screen to go up by it self.
Is there a mod to cancel the function of all the physical buttons?
I have a on screen buttons mod so it wont be a problem not using them.
edit: I was able to fix it by putting # before the menu key in the generic.kl file in system/usr/ keys(something)
now the only problem that remains is that the screen change by itself from negative colors mode to the normal colors mod.
is there a way to cancel it? in generic.kl or in other way?
Thanks
