--Exchange and Security-- - EVO 4G Themes and Apps

I am in need for some despirate help! Let me start first with the problem. I am running CM6.1.1 and am unable to connect to my exchange email. When I fill the appropriate boxes with the correct information, I get an error saying:
"Setup could not finish
This server requires security features your phone does not support"
So my question is what security features is the evo missing? I was able to set up my exchange email without any problems on sense roms.
So now here is what I have done to trouble shoot and alleviate this problem. I have checked both boxes on the setup page "use secure connection" and "accept all SSL certificates" still no go. I have installed numerous different versions including a 2.1 version, 2.2 version, and then 3-4 versions with the security bypass. Still nothin. I have also tried improved email from the market, and you guessed it. Still nothin. lol I just want the stock email app to work for me. I don't mind the security features that come along with exchange either as long as it works.
I was using the trial version of touchdown for a while.. It worked. But I didn't really like the app and I don't want to pay 20 bucks for an email app.
So now Im going for the hail mary... One last try to find someone that may have the answer I'm looking for! Do any of you fellow friends out there know of a possible fix?
By the way I am on exchange 2007.
Thanks for reading!!

this is a known error with googles AOSP mail app which CM, MIUI and any other AOSP based ROM uses. currently only sense ROM's (I recommend MYN's,Calks,Fresh) mail app works with additional security features. My suggestion is to either download an app like touchdown (paid) or NAND your CM setup and flash any of those SENSE roms and wait for 2.3 to come out which i believe will work better with secure exchange environments

That's what I was afraid of... I don't think I could bear going back to a sense based rom lol... I've been running cm since before 6.1. Im just getting tired of logging online to check my mail! well it looks like ill have to live with it for a little while longer. Thanks for the reply!

no problem, you can't go wrong with Myn, calk or any of the well supported sense roms and you might actually like it the horrors

Need native Exchange support help please

So I am brand new to Android and like it so far. I have a Vodafone HTC magic 32b. But really miss Exchange native support.
So my question is can anyone point me to ROMS that have Native Exchange support. I hear Android 2 can do this and like the sound of that. But also I hear that some 1.6 one will do it.
Please remember that I am new to android and I have found the HTC_Sapphire_Hacking site. I have flashed plenty of windows mobile in my time (those days are gladly gone now) but not done android.
Thanks
Just download dwang's rom (check my signature) or Cyanogenmod (any version) and extract the Mail.apk from it, and install on your phone.
You can extract it just by going into the zip file and having a look around, can't remember the exact location but it was easy to find.
To install the apk either use "adb" from the android SDK (adb install mail.apk) or copy it to your sd card and install it using Astro.
Hope this helps.
PS. you are better off posting in sappire general for this as your questions are not related to rom development.
Thanks for that
Great answer and will open up a new thread in the the apropriate thread as I get an error saying
--------------------------------
Application not installed
Work email could not be installed on this phone

I guess i may need to flash yet
Thanks again
Need FULL Exchange support (Mail, Contacts, and Calendar) ?
If you need REAL Exchange support (not just email), you really need an HTC (not GOOGLE) branded ROM. Nearly every HERO ROM fits this criteria, but the following link provides a non-Hero ROM (EVERYTHING works, and it's FAST because it's meant for the sapphire). I've used it on two 32B Sapphires now for a couple months is it's the best ROM I can find that provides full exchanges support. Aside from not having SenseUI, I can't see any reason to run another ROM yet either. If Eclair/2.0 get perfected, that would be a reason to move because it appears to have native Exchange support built in (whereas the HTC ROMs have the support because HTC added it, not Google). I did a LOT of research to come to this conclusion.

Now that sounds like my answer, will do this tonight.
Thanks rainabba
One more question guys?
I am all ready to go but need advice on the "wipe device" option on the recovery rom.
There are half a dozen options. Which should i choose?
Thanks

This was exactly the information I was looking for. Not what I was hoping to hear, but what I was looking for.
I rooted and installed Cyanogen on my previously virgin Rogers Magic 32A, and was a little disappointed to see Exchange Calendar sync gone along with the other HTC trims.
Don't get me wrong - Cyanogen is awesome, but I'm really looking forward to a fully working Eclair ROM now... I think the ROM you link to is 1 step forward, 2 steps back.

Yep, I couldn't give up all the Cyanogen goodness just because of lameExchange.
Best scenario I have come to love:
-Keep Cyanogen w/ Work Email
-Run Google Calendar Synch 2-way on the Corpo Laptop
-Export Outlook Contacts to Gmail (include frequent Co. Directory contacts)
I just keep working right along; emailing, scheduling, contacting without a hiccup (meetings pop-up, no duplicate contact bs, etc).
Exchange support
The options (I've used all three of them)...
1). Buy an app from the market that offers Exchange support (Roadsync is only US$10, works fine... safest option, as it doesn't involve flashing a ROM).
2). Get a custom rom that supports it. The 2 general types that I've used include Hero ROMs and ROMs based upon the Rogers phones. Hero is too slow for me, however, and the Rogers ROMs don't even have Donut yet.
3). Get an Eclair ROM. I'm currently using Eugene's AOSP, and while there are some issues (no camera, sync loop), the Exchange support is pretty nice. It's not completely clear to me, but I think the Exchange calendar suppport comes from a Moto app that was sucked off the Droid. Eclair offers calendar and mail sync with Exchange natively.
You can choose which one works best for you. For the longest time, I was running cyanogen with Roadsync, and had no problems whatsoever.
@hackitall and @jstegeman
Good posts both. Thanks for that.
I think for me I like hackitall's kluge... at least until a more stable Eclair ROM is out. It doesn't have to be cyanogen, but at least stable with all of the "normal" features like camera, etc.
At the breakneck development pace, I'd expect this sooner than later. Happy times.

Not to take anything from the great Cyanogen, but what "goodness" is lost with the Rogers ROM (or do you even know)?
BTW, your solution is beyond a PITA. I know because I tried it and a number of other "solutions" before realizing that it was all a waste of time for someone like myself that needs REAL syncing (not exporting contacts for example). Also, if you're willing to pay for a Google corp account, might as well save the hassle and buy a license for cemaphore. It does all the syncing w/o any of the BS.

Two words: Google Navigation
It's totally awesome and requires 1.6... at least I haven't seen anyone supporting it on 1.5 yet.
Ahh
Ok, i guess if I wasn't already running 2.0 on a droid, didn't have such a need for Exchange support, and/or didn't already have nDrive or my Alpine Navi unit, that would make sense
Well seing as I asked the question I thought I would say thanks for all the great help and advice.
I have ended up with roadsync on the origional rom.
I did try every rom out there 2 buggy, HERO Sssllllllooooowwwwww built in exchange support on 1.6 did not work with exchange at work (not enough security)
Great fun

A couple questions

I hope these don't come off too n00b-ish, I'm not new to Android nor to rooting phones. I had an Evo and was on Sprint when I realized that...hey, Sprint's service sucks, so I came back to Ma Bell since they finally got an Android device worth buying (no offense to others, but the Aria is way too small)
Anyway, my first question is do any of these ROMs up right now have sideloading capabilities yet?
Second, coming off of the Evo I had Sense 1.0 and it automatically linked my contact card to my Facebook through Facebook for Sense, but Sense 2.0 doesn't do that, is there a way to link my picture/contact card to Facebook?
Third, speaking of which, anyone else have problems with the Facebook App? It doesn't show my picture on my profile and half of the time doesn't load a lot of user pictures.
And last, HTC released Swype for the Evo, is there any plans of the I4G/DHD getting the keyboard too? I mainly use Better Keyboard but liked having Swype at times.
No one can answer these?
To my knowledge, every Rom here has sideloading enabled.
I only ran Sense for a few hours so I can't answer that. Sorry lol.
Facebook works fine for me.
Once you have sideloading enabled, search Google for the swype beta and install it. Bam.

You people and your damn AOSP. lol. Thanks for response, not sure what is wrong with my Facebook, it did come pre-installed, once I get rooted I may just need to reinstall it from the marketplace and it should work.
The facebook app that came preinstalled on my I4G wouldn't show my or some other pics either so I gotta say that it has to do with something that the stock rom had. I'm on CM7 right now but I remember that I was able to automatically see my pic anywhere that the stock sense apps had an entry for the owner's pic, like the messages app, contacts, etc.

[Q] has anyone had an experience with account stealing after installing a new rom?

Out of the blue my bro calls me asking my why I am peddling viagra. He tells me that I have a virus which i vehemently deny. I logged into my email which I havent had the chance to for over a week and discovered a sent items entry for the email in question.
Befuddled by the event and the fact that I hardly ever send email from this account I retraced every remembrance of providing the username/password for the account. It occured to me that the only time in the last month that I have used that username/password was when messing with my phone.
In particular, i spent the day trying out a few roms to see how the latest updates compared aesthetically. I started with CoreDroid then moved to CM7, MIUI, Android Revolution, RCMixHD then back to CoreDroid. In every instance I setup the market, downloaded Antivirus and Advanced Task Killer but left the rest of the installation as-is.
Any of the ROMs may be suspect (or some hacker/system waited until today to use stolen credentials to send SPAM? Unlikely).
Back to the reason I started this post... has anyone else experience this type of account breach while using any of the above ROMs or any ROM in general? This might have been part of some apk that was packaged into a ROM. Or could it be that while providing credentials to the Android OS during initial setup someone was able to intercept them on the way to google? I would hope the latter is not possible but I have not setup a sniffer to see what is sent over the network during initial setup.
This whole situation is enough to put me off custom ROMs.

Text-To-Speech

Apparently this feature is acting up on other devices but was wondering if anyone had this working on their G2x and if so how did you manage to get it working?

What sort of issues are you having, and what ROM are you using? I had some issues with bluetooth and tts with CM7. I've switched over to EB 2.3.3, and all is working well.
Make sure you have everything you need installed.
Go to settings/voice input & output/text-to-speech settings/
If "Install voice data" isn't grayed out, click on that...it will take you to the market to download the voice engine.
I haven't noticed any problems with my tts, running my current ROM, but I also don't use Pico. I use Svox. It cost around $2-3 for the voice download, but it's much nicer than Pico.
Good Luck.
I'm running stock GB 2.3.3
I was hoping it would read text as they came in similar to the new WP7 Mango update but apparently the framework doesn't support that yet.
It takes me to the market, i download the application but then it uninstalls itself and shows that i have never downloaded the application before. I might install Faux123 rom and see if i can get it to work.

What app are you trying to d/l? I've never really tested out text message readers. I know Handcent will read the text, but IDK if you can set it to read as they come in.
I did test out Vlingo way back, and I must say...it was pretty good. I just don't like that it requires data usage (I'm on a limited data plan). But, for reading texts, Vlingo was pretty awesome. It even understood things like LOL (rather than say L-O-L, it would read it as "laughing out loud"). It even translated WTF, which of course made me laugh like a 12yr old kid.
I'm not downloading any. I was hoping the stock messaging application would do this as i kind of like the layout but sucks as far as security is concerned but that is an android thing.
I'll give the Vlingo a try and see if it works.
Thanks for the help.

[Q] CM10.1 AOSP Jellybean and EAS

Hi all, Updated to CM10.1 AOSP 4.2.1 Jellybean on my HTC Sensation. All works excellently other than I can no longer connect to Exchange, getting the "this server requires security features that your android..." error. I've Google it and looked on this forum but can't seem to find any definitive answer. My Sensation is running the above ROM, rooted, and, Android 4.2.2 and the Exchange server is 2003. Firmware is 3.3 which I had to update prior to this ROM. Nothing has been changed on the Exchange server and indeed until I flashed this new rom it sync'd no problem. My previous rom was on ICS and I though I had heard that there were problems with ICS and active sync but can't find any details on it.
I tried this hack too http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117452 but it doesn't seem to make any difference. Interestingly enough, when I look at exchange via OWA and remove all mobile devices and then try to connect the phone again it shows up.
Is this problem because CM10.1 AOSP doesn't support EAS?
Thanks for any help.

I am not any help, but I see the exact same issue with my EVO LTE on CM10.1. Shows up in the OWA devices log and everything. I have googled the heck out of it to no avail. I am able to gain access using the Touchdown app, but that is not a very good solution (and it costs $20 when the stock app is perfectly fine). I have not tried the custom apps that remove security like the one you link to. I do not mind the security features as much as I just want to connect to my work email. My company has an "iPhone only" policy, but If I revert back to a 4.1 ROM, I am able to connect. As far as I know, there is no way to restrict the type of device from the server side; it just checks to see if the correct sercurity is in place.
