How do warrenty's work with these phones? - Captivate General

Alright I know that when you flash your phone it voids the warranty, but if you were to lets say flash back to your service providers ROM before returning it would they be able to tell?
I've just bought the Captivate a few days ago but I plan on returning it to Rogers due to the horrible battery life. I'm never at home and need my phone a lot so having a bad battery life isn't an option for me.
The thing is I flashed a custom 2.2 ROM last night. I plan on returning it tomorrow, but I've realized that I voided the warranty. I've downloaded the stock Rogers ROM and can flash it before I go but will they still know some how?
So basically I'm wondering if I'm screwed or not.
Thanks in advanced

I seriously doubt it, however since you're on rogers you'll need to get rid of that at&t logo upon startup when you flash back to stock so good luck.
Also the 2.2 roms encrypt some of the files in the /efs directory, if rogers digs deep enough and find that out they might figure out that you flashed a rom. Unless you backed it up and restored it... however i doubt you did.

Returned one with no trouble after flashing back to stock at&t. As long as you can get it to look like stock on boot I doubt you will have any trouble, regardless of efs files being altered

[Q] Please Help! Important! Unrooting Question

hey guys,
bought my samsung captivate two days ago and i love it. from reading all the posts about how rooting is awesome i finally took the plunge and rooted my phone with the one click root program. followed the directions to the teeth, everything went fine. even went as far as downloading clockwork and backing up my rom.
few hours later, im totally blown that i rooted my phone. i realized i threw away my warranty.
is there ANY way to unroot the phone and make it totally stock and make it seem like the phone was never altered? i read some answers of "yeah" and some answers of "once your rooted, you can't get back" (i remember reading about an article about how some android phones like the nexus one, once you root theres no going back period). the program i used had a unroot button but im not sure if that would wipe everything away to factory settings and erase all traces of the root.
i know im effing stupid for not thinking it threw. but hey, its good that i came to my senses before i loaded up an os.
to be clear, my phone is just rooted. nothing else. im not running cognitive rom or anything. its running the stock samsung 2.1.
so can anyone PLEASE PLEASE help me solve this problem?
im a total noob when it comes to android.
it took me 20 minutes doing that one click from reading the directions over and over again lol.
i need some step by step directions for stupid people
okay, so i followed the directions to unroot. the programs that were installed when i rooted seemed to have disappear. to be extra sure, i reformatted my sd card and than factory restored the phone (from settings/privacy). quick question though, after i pressed "factory reset" my phone rebooted and than for a quick second i saw the same screen i saw when i rooted (the black screen with the yellow font? looked like a system command prompt i guess). it came on for a sec and than disappeared and it booted regularly. did that happen because i did a factory reset or did that happen because im still rooted?
wtf is wrong with me. i just want my unrooted captivate back (and my warranty lol)
odin to stock with master clear.
There's a thread under android development something with "stock rom" that should restore your phone back to factory.
If you did all of that then you are definitely back to stock now & theres no way of detecting your phone was rooted. You could of gotten away with just using one click to unroot. Thats all I did when I returned mine after a week because my gps never worked at all. I dont think they even did anything to check if it was rooted or anything. Hows your gps on the new one by the way? Mines still bad but at least it sees some satellites now. My old one had a hardware problem where gps wouldn't do anything at all.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
When you use odin to flash back to stock does that restore the AT&T bloatware as well? Or should I use TiB when I first get the phone to get the bloatware back on?
Thanks,
JOe K.
After trying to exchange my phone for another phone (thinking the GPS is a hardware issue) I had rooted and flashed a custom rom. I reverted back using ODIN master clear and ODIN 2.1 rom (Which puts bloatware and everything on it) and there's no way to detect it. The only time it will truly void your warranty (I believe) if you go into the store with a custom rom or if you go into the store with a bricked phone and they figure out you were modifying your phone.
thanks for the answers guys! why is it that you cant "unroot" a nexus one? i heard they'll always be able to tell if your rooted once you do it.

Temproot Question

Hey, I have a question about TempRooting my phone. I dont want to root my phone because i dont want to void my warranty. But, I want to do a few things with my software that require root access. For example, I want to install a CRT animation on my phone which, of course, required root access. Basically what my question is, is if I temproot my phone and modify a few things like installing CRT animation, will it void my warranty? I know TempRooting will not void the warranty, but Im curious as to if installing a CRT animation will void the warranty. Also, if I do it, will i still be able to receive the OTA updates via wifi? Thanks guys
Temptooting Voids your warranty, Dunno where you heard that it doesn't.
Mod it. Thats all I have to say
Using this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1591601 will put you back to stock COMPLETELY. Tmobile can't tell. I got a HD2 with windows mobile on it and flashed android on it. Yea, a completely different OS. Found some hardware issues (was a refurbished phone) restored back to stock using a similar technique and sent it back to Tmo. They have never contacted me or ever asked me about it. My friend also had text messaging problems on his Exhibit. We rooted and flashed CWM and a new rom to see if it fixed and ended up restoring back to stock and getting a different phone. There is also a way to edit the flash counter though I do not know where to find one for our phone atm.
so basically if I temproot my phone, mod the hell out of it, im good to go? and if i ever need to take it in to Tmobile or if i want to upgrade to 4.0 when the OTA comes out, i just follow that guide and everythings all good? and your sure that its legit and it works? i dont really trust one-click programs
You are always taking a risk if you root. Period. But I have sent rooted phones in to be returned without issue and if you return to stock as described in the post you will be able to get the update.
Hey, I just read a post on XDA describing why its okay to root your device, according to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty act. It says that a company has to prove that you broke your phone by rooting it if there is a problem with it, and its under warranty. Is it really true?

[Q] Reverting Everything to Stock?

XDA,
I successfully rooted my brand new 2.20 AT&T HTC One X, flashed CM10 rom and TWRP 2.2.3 custom recovery. Everything was going great; much love to the community and djrbliss. Here's my issue: Yesterday my phone went flying, hit the ground BLAM! and shattered the screen. I've therefore voided my warranty and it looks like theres no way out of this $600 accident. Panic mode....
But, I have a plan: I have premium accidental damage coverage. But in order for me to be elegible for a complete phone replacement I need to revert to the stock ROM, lock my bootloader, eliminate the custom recovery, and finally reset the flash counter with a USB jig. I need it to appear as though I havent changed a thing. Heres my question for you all: Is it possible to revert my phone completely? If I am successful, will AT&T notice? What steps should I take?
Any tips would be great. I'll keep you all updated on what develops.

if the phone powers on and such you should be able to relock bootloader and run the ruu. thats all you really need to do for insurance claim. you cant remove the relocked bootloader message without s-off, but it shouldn't matter since your claiming physical damage.
Having a custom rom/bootloader shouldn't affect a physical warranty claim, but from the things I hear about AT&T I wouldn't be surprised

Looked into it, turns out at&t will charge $200 for a physical damage claim IF they decide its under warranty... Sucks. Looks like ill be buying and replacing the digitizer/lcd myself...

No way to completely take it back to stock. It will always say "RELOCKED". But to get to that point, you need to relock your phone and run the RUU. AT&T shouldn't care or check honestly.

What software should I put on GS3 for sale?

Hey all,
I recently sold my phone running CM 10 on eBay and the buyer said the phone is for her son, so she didn't know what software he wants on it....I figure I would be best off just sending it to them stock (stock firmware, unrooted, locked bootloader).
Is there anyway I can do this besides using Odin? I'm currently using a Mac, so anything method that I can use on OS X would be great, but if not, I can just get hold of a PC and do it via Odin if necessary
Heimdall would be your solution. It's a cross platform Odin alternative and there are native versions for PC, Mac, and Linux. The XDA thread is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755265
It uses the same tar files that Odin would. As far as the software, I would run a stock unrooted TW for the kid personally. That way his mom can't come back and harass you about something he did because you left him with dangerous software. If he roots it and then breaks it, it's his own fault. Just tell her you left it on a stock version with no inherent risk involved, but just incase he needs to know (have her not tell the kid) the bootloader is already unlocked.
I would do stock rooted. Rooted is always a plus and may get you a few more dollars for it. Then people could choose their own ROM if they so desire. I know I desire just being stock rooted

Make it Stock, locked! incase they dont like the way the phone run, they can always blame you for modding and make you take it back! and it acts as a negative point in Dispute even though you mention it!
I ended up just Odin'ing it back to stock! Thanks guys

Definitely a good call... I do that with every phone I sell.
The way I see it is that if they're not intelligent / motivated / tech savvy enough to root and load something custom on their own then they'll probably have a hell of a time navigating the random problems you'd encounter running anything other than stock.

SM-G310R5=SM-G310HN=Galaxy Ace3?

I'm new to phones
I got a greatcall jitterbug3 that is an overlaid bloated mess but otherwise a cool little phone. Its drawback is that Samsung and greatcall must have made some kind of deal and only put JellyBean in it.
From what I can figure out the SM-G310HN is the international version of the same phone: it runs kitkat.
I have emailed Samsung and GreatCall and basically they don't give a hoot.
I just got this phone new last Oct.
I would like to put a custom rom in it but I can't unlock the bootloader I've tried a bunch of command line but the best I've gotten is "unauthorized"
So
What if I got the stock rom (I did) for the 310hn which is kitkat
Can I flash a stock rom using odin without the bootloader being unlocked?
I know I might brick it I'm asking if this is a possibility before doing something stupid.
What I'd really like would be to go with custom but that seems impossible.
This is so much more difficult than working on windows where I could always wipe the disk and start over, LOL
I've been puttering with this for two months and thankfully it still works and I do believe I was able to capture a nandroid backup when I had it provisionally unlocked with ez-unlock and rooted with online nandroid. At least the nandroid included files that looked good and a boot img.
I might have found something:
http://vsphone.info/index.php?phone1=7468&phone2=6042
The hn is gsm and the r5 is cdma, I wonder if that would nix the changeover
Sorry for the long winded post.
Hey Thanks,
Dave
