In case you missed it, this weekend Staples announced that it was no longer offering the 10.1-inch Viewsonic G Tablet because of a "manufacturing defect." Well, as it turns out, Viewsonic is claiming there's really no hardware defect at all -- instead, the manufacturer of the Android 2.2, Tegra 2-powered tablet is reporting that there's really a "user experience issue." Nope, that doesn't sound much better, but according to Viewsonic's VP of Marketing Adam Hanin, the G Tablet saw a fair number of returns because of its sluggish software experience, which was caused by the preloaded Tap and Tap Android layer. A number of issues were also caused by the lack of Flash, which Adobe hasn't yet certified for Tegra 2 (we hear that's finally coming at the end of January). "We believe it is the user experience that caused all the returns, and we are taking important steps forward with the G Tablet," Hanin told us.
So, what are those steps exactly? Viewsonic will be releasing an over-the-air software update before the end of the week and will also provide links for users to manually download and install a beta version of Flash on its support page. Naturally, we asked Hanin why the G Tablet was shipped in this half-finished state at all -- he told us that while Android and Tegra are great platforms, Google's lack of support for larger devices means that companies like Viewsonic have to "go out and put together their own software and app stores." We're not sure that's a great answer -- in fact, it sort of sounds like Viewsonic is trying to blame Google, Adobe, and NVIDIA for its own half-finished and laggy software, when it released the tablet on its accord own to retailers. Either way, we've now seen more than enough terrible "user experience" issues on the early crop of Android tablets
Wheres the apology?
Anyone else see engaget as fairly biased against the gtablet?
Engadget is biased to anything not sold by Apple. It's been like that for a while. Despite this, they're still the ones to beat as a tech blog so I just ignore the snarky condescending tone they use while reviewing any and all products that compete with Apple's and enjoy the funny commentary by writers and reader alike, as well as appreciate (for the most part) the information they share and news they break.
Endgadget(applefanboysrus.com) are A-Holes anyway, they are mad that Apple products can't pull away from Android, poor steve jobs can't catch a break, make a phone, android makes it better, make a tablet, android will own that market too.

Ars Technica is pretty much this way now as well, might as well change their name to Apple Centrica
Viewsonic gambled on the early release of the g tablet and lost. The software
wasn't ready. I got to blame the QA group that works for Viewsonic. They
should know people expect it to work out of box. Slow response to touches,
tap n tap ... looked nice but needed to be quicker. The lack of adobe flash
and market place also was a let down. QA should have just said, " NO ". An
made them fix the tap n tap interface and the other issues before releasing
the g tablet.
The biggest issue is the display screen for the device. They need to release
a better display with better viewing angles. If you have to call the people
that make the displays for Apples iPad .. Having the hardware of the
Viewsonic g tablet with the iPad display would ROCK ..
Time to make some donuts ...

Screen is bad, but biggest issue by far is the alpha quality UI OOB... just doesn't fly for most consumers.
I think that flash & market support are overrated for most consumers as well. Having flash as a later update is fine as it'll eventually be released by Adobe for Tegra 2, but market? Just too many alternatives, and so far I could've done with no market at all as everything that I've installed so far is available directly from the dev as well as the market...

Gotta agree here. First thing you notice when you pull this thing out of the box is the force close issues, the clock timezone wont stay, its unresponsive and slow. In a world where people demand instant gratification, no one wants to wait for the next update or "fix" becuase it shouldnt need to be fixed in the first place. If I didnt know any better and took my G tab out of the box, I'd be running back to Sears to return it.

You mean like having to hold your phone a particular way or you wouldn't have any signal?
No people are very patient as long as they are informed about what is happening.
My question is why should Staples apologize? I think everyone here has to admit that out of the box this device had a lot of issues. Your average consumer probably wouldn't even call Viewsonic tech support, but instead would just take it back to the store. I'd imagine the return rate was pretty horrific, so why in the world would Staples want to apologize for pulling an item that I'm sure to the non-technical appears to have hardware issues?

I'll be the first to admit the Gtab is far from perfect, but calling it a hardware defect is blatantly false.
To a non-technical person if you bought a tablet opened it up and it did say an update and then boot-looped and the only solution was to send it to Viewsonic for repair, that would make them think it was a hardware problem.
Hey all! No Transformer here yet, using my trusty G-tablet. Anyway, there seems to be alot of quality control issues. Not just screen bleed and dirt under the screen but some completely device breaking things that seem to be happening all to often. Screens not working, bricking after update, gaps in the screen, not waking up from sleep, digitizer crapping out every now and then, weird artifacts popping up, not being able to charge, and devices just dieing randomly are some of problems I see people posting about. It would be more understandable if this was a mass produced device that is openly available but being that it's under limited production and has only been out for a few weeks, I find these problems showing up at an alarming rate. Not only that but because it's currently limited production if your tablet dies your out of luck for a few weeks until (hopefully) they send you a new one. So what do you think? Asus having problems producing these devices or am I just magnifying it a bit to much?
People with issues are usually more vocal than those without...
My Transformer seems to be perfect, besides Honeycomb needing an update or two. No light bleed, no dust, no bad pixels, etc.
Works great! Great device for the price point.
Keep in mind that only a few folks reported some issues - which is expected for any device. Majority are not having any issues at all and it received rave reviews from many tech sites for a reason. I personally have absolutely 0 problems with mine and I had it since launch day. It is an excellent and well made piece of hardware. Just got a dock for it today as well but haven't tried it yet.

For such a small run, there do seem to be a good number issues. Granted, XDA is not the entire Transformer user base, but since the number of these tablets sold is relatively small, I think it's a good representation. So far I've only gotten the Sleep of Death problem, whose solution is almost as bad to me as the problem.
Your chances of receiving a good unit seem to be high though, so I say go for it. Every device has its share of lemons.
No dirt here slight light bleed if you look for it but you have to be in complete dark to notice, this is my first tablet and its already changed the way I browse'and network 150% happy, just want a leedroid rom for it.

Yeah, I'll definitely still end up getting one. I think I'll wait till they are more widely available though. G-tablet is doing fine and I don't need one, need one right now. Haha, the Transformer looks like an amazing device but the biggest reason for me to have one is just so I can say I "have one." I say that now but as I soon as I see one pop up "in-stock" I probably can't resist buying.

My son received his last Friday and hasn't had any problems.
I posted about a slight gap on the left side of my screen, but mainly just to see if it's a common thing. I've seen no ill effect from it, including no dust under the screen (which would be my only concern).
I also have a Xoom that I'll be returning soon, and while it's perhaps build a little more solidly (and then again, it's also a simpler design) it's nowhere near as nice as the TF. The TF screen is SO much better, and the keyboard dock is looking SO cool, and the price at $399 is SO nice, that I'll take some glitches here and there.
150% happy with mine only tablet i have had ! My laptop usage has more than haved since getting my eee pad
Mine is also perfect.
good idea not to buy one, one less consumer to fill up an order. good news for everyone else still waiting for their tablet.
I'm waiting for the Tegra 3 Transformer.
Another owner with 0 issues. Having never used a touch-screen phone or tablet beyond 10 minutes in the Apple store with the ipad (shhh, don't tell anyone, they would lose respect for me) I was pleasantly surprised with my Transformer. As a developer of 10+ years, I really, really like Honeycomb and find it to be very easy to use.
I have no dust, no dead pixels, no charging issues, no on/off issues, nothing. I'm actually ashamed to admit that my time on my normal, custom-built, water-cooled 4.6Ghz Core i5 2500K, Radeon 5870 rig has gone down sharply. I spend ALL my free time on my fast computer and I can't stand slow machines (like my work laptop). No device before this could break the relationship I have with my computer (PS3, Wii, Xbox, even my 1-year old Asus gaming laptop).
For reference, I'm still on the stock/original build of Honeycomb, 0 updates. The only cons I have are with HC itself and are small. The biggest con I can come up with is the 720p main/high profile playback issues of video files (mp4, mkv specifically). Sure, they play fine after a baseline re-encode that doubles their file size, but that's not acceptable IMO. I'm not convinced it's a hardware issue just yet and will only believe it once we hear it directly from Asus or nVidia.
I may need to track down another if my wife keeps hogging the Transformer.
I have no problem with my transformer =)
The transformer isn't perfect, there is going to be issue, some are isolated while others are widespread but I can say it's the best honeycomb tablet out so far for the price vs quality.

Just got mine today, had it for about an hour so far. The first time I turned it on after signing in to my google account it was SUPER LAGGY. But I then realized this was due to it installing 20 of my apps, and having the homescreens filled. It hastened up afterwards.
I don't like that it lags when you fill up the homescreens, but its no laggier than any other android.
The screen is gorgeous and i have no problems with it, while the hardware doesn't feel like an iPad but its also cheaper!
I got it for the keyboard and I'm still waiting. The way I see it is I'm gonna pay $50 more than an iPad but get a tablet with a better screen, better battery life and a fully functioning keyboard.
If you're expecting iPad build quality you will be let down, but the build quality is not BAD.
I also found some other software issues such as i'll click a button or a link and it will take me to something entirely different... then i'll hit back and click it again and it will work... quirky but not a huge deal...
I'm hoping that software updates will make it even better, but it currently fulfills my need for a cheap, light, laptop (once i get the keyboard) that runs android
No dirt here slight light bleed and crappy battery life other then that its fine.
I have been on the market for an Android 10 inch tablet for close to a year. I have watching several of the devices that have come on the market there. I like the iPad for some things but I hate the proprietary nature and many other numerous issues to list.
Back to my original question though
I have been following reviews online and this is probably the 3rd or 4th time that I have seen reviews on Amazon.com or other sites that the ASUS TF700 has some "build quality issues" they have pointed out problems with the tablet making a squeaky noise when pressing on the glass in some areas and it appearing that the "glue is coming loose". I wanted to say that if I'm spending $500+ on a device. I want it to work, and work well, and not have to replace it in a year or less.
Another comment I have seen is that its sluggish when doing "heavy multitasking". I plan to do quite a bit of multitasking on it and wondered what other user's experiences are. I have read that ASUS will release the Jelly Bean update to this device and I would expect that this may help with some of that.
One of the reasons that I'm certainly considering going with the ASUS over the other tablets is that I prefer ASUS devices on other platforms. I have an ASUS laptop that originally came with Windows Vista (that tells you how dated it is). It's probably 4-5 years old at this point and it's still working off the original AC adapter, original battery and it still works flawlessly. I have owned several ASUS motherboards that work perfectly and last.
I wanted your opinions, since you guys are the Android tablet guru's and I've read some of the other posts. Even the one about the squeakiness by the speaker. But I' m wondering if this is a common issue or one to be concerned about.
One last thing is that I noticed there is an Atmel stylus that might be compatible with it. Has anyone purchased and used one yet? If so, what do you think about it? I'm seriously considering the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 as well because of this stylus capability and the 2GB of ram in there. Money is not that much of a problem since I will be using gift cards (like up to $700 worth) to buy it.
Yes, Asus definitely has some quality-control issues, but if you do get a "bad" one, you can always just return it for another. Personally, my TF700 is fine - some minor light bleed on the bottom and right sides, but it's only noticeable at full brightness, which I'll never use anyway. I don't have the clicking/squeaking noise either. I truly believe that most of these issues are very minor and most folks wouldn't even notice them if they weren't looking for them.
Don't let this hold you back from an awesome tablet - that's why they make warranties! My original TF101 is still running great (hardware-wise, at least - ICS is another story!) - never had any hardware issues with it and my wife still uses it daily.

I'm surprised. From what I see here, I think I got one of the nicer tablets. My screen has no obvious light bleeds, no dust trapped under the glass, or scratches. The display is bonded firmly and doesn't squeak. I guess it may be potluck with the build quality, but mine is built well.
Like jtrosky said, if you get a bad one, you can exchange it.

First one had dust under screen.
Second had huge bright white crater-like defect in center of screen. Really bad defect - can't understand how that passed quality control.
Third one is perfect....so far....
Asus should stay with what they do best..build computers. They sucks with pad, problems after problems. The TF700 is not ready for prime time. They did the 201 and still making too many mistake with the 700. I can named many like, USB,SB card, I/O bottle neck, phone jack volume, noise when pressed on glass, not fitting well with dock..and on and on. I would wait for Samsung Note 10.1.

But then what would be the alternative: Acer? Apple? Samsung where you're stuck on the same firmware forever?
I think the problem is the separation of design and production these days. These tablets are made by faceless Chinese workers, and then shipped over here. Its not like it used to be where the factory workers and the manufacturer and quality control were all in one place. In fact, do we even know if ASUS ever even sees the tablets after they leave the factory and get shipped to the warehouse?
You should be honored. You're now an ASUS employee - we get to inspect the tablets and return the defective ones - we're quality control technicians!

Asus sold the product, they're 100% responsible for their product, doesn't matter how/where they were made. I payed Asus with my own hard working money and I do have the right to complaint when the product is not working as advertise. I will be glad to contribute my free time to test for them for free if they allowed me to have the product for FREE.

That sounds nice. But you have to vote with your wallet. And the public already has. People want cheap stuff. The Chinese make cheap stuff. So regardless of weather ASUS is responsible or not, if people continue to buy it, why would ASUS have any reason to change? The days of real premium quality merchandise are over.
Every product on the face of the planet is now made in one place. We chose to abandon our factories and manufacturing facilities. So cheap lower quality stuff is now the norm.

I was in the same boat as you, waiting for a 10" tablet that I thought fit my needs and was worth the premium we pay for tablet devices.
I was concerned about quality as well. I kept seeing all kinds of stories on the forums (loose glass, dust, light bleed, etc). I ordered from Amazon knowing that it would be easy to return if there was a problem, but mine is just fine and fortunately has none of the problems that some other people have had.
Re: multitasking - I do a lot of multitasking. I usually have it on "balanced" mode and it's super smooth. It slows down a very little bit when I'm updating 2+ apps simultaneously, and the odd occasion where I'm running multiple CPU-intensive apps, but I just switch to "performance" mode for that short period of time and it's back to being snappy.
If you get a bad one, just return it immediately and get a new one. I'm loving this tablet =)
Thanks, I appreciate your input. I think I may end up going with it. We'll see...The samsung note 10.1 doesn't even disclose how much it will cost yet. I'm worried that even $700 may not be enough. I have heard some rumors of around $750. Plus, I don't know how much I would honestly use the Stylus. It would be a fun toy, but not practical for day to day use for me most likely. I'm so used to using touch interfaces all my other android tablet devices and a prior iPhone now anyway.
Keep in mind as well that it'd usually not the happy people that write or speak out. Its often the dissatisfied. There are plenty of happy and satisfied users out there as well.

I hope it works out for you. I think this is a terrific tablet (and keyboard dock).
I bought a TF700 from Amazon.
it had little light bleeding and clicking screen sound on the speaking side
and the metal back cover is kinda weak (When I hold it, I can feel ipad back metal cover is a little bit harder and stiff)
I drop it from 5cm high and the bottom left hit the table
the bottom left (audio jack) just deform a little and the screen pop out.
Also, it is not stable and reboot and freeze. the I/O issue is still not completely fixed.
I returned it and hope they can give me a fine one
I just hope ASUS can improve its production line of TF700 and at least avoid screen loosen problem if they can
I really like TF700 because it is the only high-end Andriod FHD tablet with awesome keyboard dock available on the market
I don't want shamesung plastic low ppi **** or Acer heater tablet.
I don't wanna wait for the Surface Pro to come out
I am a PT student and I need a tablet to read textbook (we use camera to copy the entire textbook so we can read it on tablet and save lots of money)

Yeah I am quite pissed too. This was actually the first electronic device I have ever had to return. And I have got quite a lot of stuff. First time went for Asus and this happened.
Too bad that the company I bought it had only 7 days return policy. LOL. Now my tablet went to Asus service to other side of the earth. I really wish they give me new one and not try to fix dead pixels, loose glass, light bleeding and all other problems.
Still not so cool owning expensive tablet for 2 weeks and then loose it for service center for minimum 3 weeks. But this not only Asus to blame, also this one shop in Finland just got to my black list.
Thumbs Down on a Dumb idea

Extremely few quality issues and they appear to be resolved by replacement.
There are always gripers - don't expose your weaknesses with a mass mailing.

I have tried them all, Apple, Samsung, HTC, Nokia, Sony, you name it. First time I have seen this much complaint about quality and my unit also went back.
There is serious issue with Asus QC. Their product would be the best Android tablet available IF they just would make them as they should be.
I would guess getting quite expensive for Asus too to send new ones. I am guessing return % something like 30% with their products..just a wild guess!
I can't because I unlocked it before the problem actually arose, and to add to the problem, it was a US import

If your thinking of doing that email post then do it. You don't need the permission from the viewers here. You will feel a bit vindicated by standing up for what you feel. Just be aware your desired result probably won't happen and they may delete your post. You would be better off taking your time to put a short polite email about your specific issues and emailing Gary or Tien. Look at the stickies in the prime forum for their info.
I'm thinking
ASUS is just one of many companies passing expensive products of dubious quality to consumers.
Somebody write the "How Its Made" show and ask 'em to do one on tablets from ASUS.
Maybe we could catch them in the act.

I think that's a super-wild guess. Same thing occurred with the Nexus 7 forums. You would think that like 70% were bad! Now they are everyones' favorite tablet!
When SGS series phones were getting bricked by the dozens (hundreds, probably) due to very faultly emmc firmware that Samsung never fixed, you would also think it was the end of the world. But out of millions sold, whats a few hundred superbricks?
Anyway, everyone who has had severe-enough issues to have to return their TF700 gets my full sympathy. It sucks, plain and simple. But I'll bet they represent a very small percentage of the units sold to date.
I dont have any QC problems, after a month of usage, i dont have any clicks or other defects nor do i have light bleeding, but i do feel bad for all of you because i would have been as pissed as all of you if it would have happened to me. I will sign any petition or email.

Nexus 7 can't be compared to Infinity when we speak about sold units, it's a Google brand and costs only 200$ so i'm sure it sold much more than Infinity. The Infinity will never sell as much as Nexus so in this case if you compare the numbers Infinity's quality issues are quiet serious imo.
Also i guess that people complain more when they paid 600 $ for a device compared with those that paid only 200.Anyway nobody stop you guys from sending a petition to Asus but imo you shouldn't expect too much from that.

Re: the Nexus 7, most of the people complaining were folks coming over from Kindle Fires iirc. I don't think it mattered to them that they had only spent $200-250.

Too bad that the company I bought it had only 7 days return policy. [...] this one shop in Finland just got to my black list.

If you bought it online, you always have at least 2 weeks unconditional return in all countries in the European Union (which is one of the reasons I mainly buy my expensive electronic gadgets from online shops).
Just got my Infinity CG from BB after waiting a few months.
While its the sexiest Android Tablet or IMHO sexiest tablet of them all to date.. mine is plagued by light bleeding, dust and/or dead pixels under the screen, the glass gives around the edges and causes cracking/creaking noises.
Also, for a new un-opened box item, I was surprised to see my shiny gold back come from the factory with a few scratches and small indentations across the back and side of the unit.
I'll play with it a little more until it goes back as a return.
I can't imagine all the refurb deals that will be created from these Infinity Tabs...
Saddened.
I may try again in a couple months if it looks like QC is up and no worthy competitor is on the immediate horizon. But after waiting since last winter to get this thing, seeing the crappy production values is like a kick in the nads.
Crap. this is one of the reasons I was enjoying the TF700 section over TF201. Always 8itching on the internet and taking no action, return the ones with problems and get the one you want. Are any of the people complaining out of their return window? There are options for you as well that may be a little more work than complaining but still result in a warm fuzzy feeling about your new tablet eventually.
Maybe I'll go back to BB and get a TF300 and see if their immune to this.
Point is, buying a $500 computing device shouldn't be a crapshoot. Can you imagine people buying Dell laptops -- many of which are a LOT cheaper than this tab -- and returning them because of such basic manufacturing flaws?
Dunno about you, but I have a demanding job, kids, social life, etc. When I buy a product like this, I expect it to be 100% out of the box. I don't have time to play QC roulette because Asus isn't giving its best effort.
Hi! I'm looking into buying the Shield Tablet or the Nexus 9. Right now, I'm leaning more towards the Shield Tablet.
Here's a quick versus of the two for me:
Shield Tablet
- $100 cheaper
- Expandable storage
- Lower res meaning probably better in gameplay
- Stylus
- Shield Hub/ Supported Games (I'm not sure about this if there will be games available on the Shield that won't be on the Nexus 9 via the hub)
Nexus 9
- Pure Google device (Came from a Nexus 5 and 7 2013 and yeah love stock)
- Larger screen
- Better Battery; larger and has turbo charge
- 64 bit
So anyway, I've been reading around and a lot of people have been having issues and problems with their Shield Tablet (Wifi and cracks) but I checked the Nvidia forums and apparently that should only be for the first batch of units and they're replacing everyone who has issues. They said they were able to isolate the problem in production and the new batches should be fine. My question is, are people still experiencing issues with the new batches? Is it safe to get one now? Or should I just save up the extra $100 and go for the Nexus 9?
Btw I'm just a student so the extra $100 is a big deal for me just so you guys understand the situation. Also, I'm from the Philippines so when I get it shipped from my relatives in the states, I'm hoping I wouldn't have to send it back because of issues and stuff.
Thanks!
Even if you do, the RMA process means they ship one out to you first before you send your defective unit back. And they include courier labels so no cost to you.
Speaking from experience here. ?
You should be fine in regards to games on Play store; They should be Tegra K1 optimized, so I don't think Nvidia is locking them as 'Shield Tablet optimized'- most of those titles function on the Shield Portable too. Gamestream should also be accessible to you via limelight.
While Nvidia claims that hardware issues were isolated to the first batch, there have been reports and users claiming that it happens on later batches and the LTE model. If RMA is something you're comfortable with doing (sending it to your relatives to RMA), then best luck with the Shield. However, if you want to absolutely avoid having to RMA due to cracking or other issues, try the Nexus 9. One caveat though; The Nexus 9 has thermal throttling, from what I've read.
Not too sure about that Nexus 9 comment. There's definitely a build quality issue with these early batches.
See my post here for my experience. -- There's plenty more of it.
The reason I'm here is because I was considering a shield tablet, after RMAing my Nexus 9. Now it seems both devices have ridiculous build quality issues.

I have not had any build quality issues with my v shield. Wi-Fi is still a pain in the ass sometimes but that will be fixed with updates.
Otherwise I'm completely satisfied with my tablet. It's powerful runs fast. Kills it on game stream. It's great.

From what I've read, WiFi performance can be severely impacted based on how one holds the device. If that's true ( and from reading a bit here and on the NV official forums, there is no reason to believe it is 100% false) I would call that a build quality/manufacturing issue. Is that what you are referring to as a "pain in the ass" ?
For me the two biggest concerns are screen cracking (confirmed by NV here) and WiFi signal. The screen cracking issue, while promised to be fixed in a manufacturing refresh still has users with the same issue.
The rest of the tablet specs/reviews I'm pretty happy with, but those two issues are significant enough to stop my purchase.
To clarify, I don't think anyone's screen has cracked. Its corners of the plastic casing. By my estimation the cracking issue is being resolved quietly behind the scenes with silence about it in public.
I have a little trouble with my Shield with wifi dropping but no weak wifi. I do have to restart every day or so which I don't mind. Mine will drop out then if I restart it it works perfect for the rest of the day.

- Larger screen (with movies 16:9 playing only little size difference)
- Better Battery; larger and has turbo charge (charges very slow, read postings of users)
- 64 bit (doesn't mean faster!! Read more about it on the web! Antutu scores are about the same!)

Iron force problem
The only game I play is Iron Force, and when running, the majority of the screen is white with only a few objects that show up. This needs to be addressed and fixed.

Well considering that you had to sideload that game because it is incompatible in the app store I would say that it is the game not the tablet, you need to talk to Chillingo about that. On that note it is incompatible with a few of my various devices which is not a good sign for the game in general.

Actually you are wrong. I downloaded it directly from the play store.
Ohh here is proof from NVidia also.
http://shield.nvidia.com/android-game-list/
Notice it is a compatible game.
Nvidia customer support had the white screen on one tablet, then tried it on another and it worked.

That is weird, what link did you get the game from? When I googled it the play store said it was incompatible with all of my devices.. I currently have a G2, S5, Shield Tab, and N7 (2013) on my account.
