Quick few noob questions about WP7 - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have just been, with a HD7 and thinking about switching to it from my iphone as i fed up of having to jailbreak it to get it to have all the features I want to have. I just have a few quick questions:
1. If their an aggregated notifications tile/tray? I notice that notifications appear at the top of the screen but is their any way of accessing them from anywhere, i am thinking of a similar sort of thing as andriod, as i noticed that not all information is shown on the tiles such as more than one calendar appointment
2. Are their any good task apps in marketplace, I need one that syncs with toodledo this is the most important thing and the tile shows the upcoming apps and if possible to show up on the lock screen
3. Can you also get more than one calendar appointment to show up on the lock screen, e.g. if you have 2 appointments in the same day at different times will they show up?
Thanks very much for everyones help in advance
James

1. i don't believe there is one at present no.
2. there are a few good market place tasks, but i don't believe any of them have live tile support. live tiles work by pulling their data off the net, not locally (though it would be a good idea i reckon to have the ability to have a live tile pull information from within the app). calandar is probably the closest thing to this, but i don't think you want to put everything in there.
3. at present, no. the lock screen and live tile will only show 1 calendar event (the next to come).
pretty much all platforms have their limits, and whilst i like wp7 how it is, i think they should provide quite a higher level of customisability to some of the aspects of it.

Can somebody explain to me how can I use Marketplace in Poland?
I mean how should I register my Credit Card to have access to the content?

no idea.. but here in the US it defaults to billing to carrier unless you have an associated credit card on the billing.microsoft.com, however it appears ms recently changed being able to login to billing.microsoft.com directly so i can change my credit cards by going through xbox.com billing.. but not sure if that helps in Poland where xbox live may not be an option

Downloading free apps is just great....
There is a tip with the address corresponding to Credit Card....

I haven't been able to charge any apps to my carrier. Not sure if its because I had a cc already on file with the marketplace from my hd2 or what.

Cant type first and last name into messaging "to" field (once you hit the

etc.)
Cant search by company name in the address list (I need to look up account
in my phone all the time by company name)

GPS won't give you the option to drive to an address in your address book
GPS freezes up and stops navigating when you turn off the screen (to save
the battery). Won't start again until you close the app and restart.
Several times the phone has frozen up and the touch screen would not
respond...cant get into messages, can't get into contact list.
Auto backup fails every night (third party app but the best one on the
market)
every day the phone freezes up in my contact list...multiple times every
single day. I have over 1700 contacts....I have reset my phone at least 5
times already today.
using three fully charged new batteries a day...I am on my third battery

Wow, i hate lists, but here i'll try to help with some limited knowledge from a touch pro owner since october (my first real smart phone)
use arrow keys left/right to select next person in list when starting to type name
cant help you there, i look up by person's name. There may be alternative software out there for a different address book connected to the main one? SPB mobile shell might have something. Found it! you can do it by going to contacts - then in the menu view-by and select company
maybe those numbers are listed on your sim card and not on your phone book, in the options there should be an option to show both address books
shesh you're picky again, Name one example where you actually need to type both to find the person you want! (i can't think of one example)
Wow, you really think windows thought of everything didn't you? GPS can't do squat without GPS software
This is most likely due to a problem with your firmware - update your ROM and see what happens
Update your ROM - i suggest a nice EnergyROM 2.0 or 1.3 - it is pretty damn stable and bug free - most of your issues from here out sound like things that can be fixed by wiping your phone and installing a better rom than the junk tossed together by the service provider
Why does it fail? What is the backup software? PIMbackup is a pretty solid one, and why do you need to backup nightly? I sync my contacts and calendar with google sync. Thats the only vital data i don't want to loose that changes daily (except for tasks, still waiting for google sync to add tasks)
Again - update your rom! Imagine a car torn apart by a kid in his first year at auto school, and then trying to put it together in a month. That is what the hack jobs who work as rom chefs for service providers do to these phones when they add in their junk bloatware. (Also HTC provided an update with new features, most providers now have released revised versions with their bloatware added of course, but they still work better than the original firmware that comes on the phone)
Battery life depends on use. How often do you have it check for email? My battery lasted only half a day when i told it to check every 5 minutes. Then i realized i really don't care about checking email (and nobody important emails me that often) so i set it to 4 hours - battery life went up drastically. Also turning down brightness, and turning off wifi will save a LOT of battery life. I get a sold day and a half out of my phone now. (with pretty decent amount of use)
Can be another issue with the firmware you're running. There is an app called Advanced Config Editor, I think there is a setting to disable T9
Sigh, indeed, applications are still a work in progress, before the iPhone, there was very little competition for slick applications, but consumers will prevail in the end. For now - its all about keeping up to date with your favorite phone blogs to find out about the latest software available
In all honesty, the TP and other windows mobile phones are not for everyone. They work great if you know what you want to do with them but if you expect to just pick up a phone and go, buy a freeken iPhone and enjoy your watered down smart phone for braindead people. (Hey, i bought my mom one for christmas, she's all happy that she changed the ringtone for me.... despite the fact her past 5 phones could also do that in less than 5 buttons......)
HTC makes a wonderful selection of mobile devices, I have always been pleased with their products.

Know nothing about the Sprint GPS nav app (I assume that's what he's using?) but Garmin Mobile does this, and I suspect most other GPS nav apps do as well.
As far as crashes and battery usage go, the only fix is to flash a different ROM without all the provider bloatware. Sounds like most of his gripes are related to Sprint's implementation of the device, not about HTC or the device itself. In any case, he'll probably never be happy with it - tell him to get an iPhone where he can blithely ignore all the missing features and lack of flexibility.

[Q] Google Now Widget/Homescreen

Ok so I did a lot of searching and have not been able to find anything for this... I found a couple of threads started by people asking if it is possible or if there is one that exists but those did not receive any real responses so I'm hoping that one of the amazing devs here can help please.
So what I'd like is a homescreen widget, or possibly a Live wallpaper, which shows the live cards from Google Now.
There are countless Google Now themed UCCW skins that people have put out. I don't want that.
I also found a way to create homescreen icons that LOOK like Google Now cards. But all those do is launch apps, they do not update with live information from Google Now.
I'm not sure why Google Now wasn't created with a widget. It just seems to make sense. It's kind of annoying that you have to open the app to get all this information, instead of having it right in front of your face on your homescreen where you can access other apps quickly as well. I mean the point of google now is to present you with information before you need it right? How is that possible if I can't get the info without opening the app.
So I'm hoping there is, if anything, some sort of work around here.
Maybe someone knows of a way to create a widget with desktop visualizer that will show the live Google now cards and update them.
I'm hoping for a scrollable widget that will be almost exactly like Google Now (i.e new cards will pop up as they do in the app, you can scroll up and down to view all of the cards you currently have, you can swipe to remove cards - (come to think of it you probably won't be able to swipe to remove cards, but maybe a double tap or something?))
It would probably be best if this widget did not include the google search bar and simply showed the google now cards.
I remember hearing about an app in the past that could overlay live wallpapers on each other. Is there a way to overlay an app into a live wall paper? so that you could see Google Now as your live wall paper, even if maybe you can't actually interact with it this way?
For now I'm going to try setting up something with tasker, so that google now will automatically open every morning when I turn off my alarm, and possibly at other points (maybe when a new card pops up or something). Something similar to this could probably be done with the smart actions app if people are interested in trying that out. But honestly I feel like this is not the best solution because I'd rather not have tasker running constantly, eating my RAM and therefore my battery.
So I don't know if the reason there is no widget already is because it simply is not possible. And if it's not possible could someone please explain why?
Also, so that I can try to work on this myself - can someone please help me by telling me which files Google now uses for getting and updating cards? (i.e. the file names I would see in Titanium or under Settings>Apps or in a file explorer where they would be located - I'm guessing somewhere in the /system/ folder) If I can access these I can play around with them and try some things out
TIA to all who reply...

Google Now figured out where I work

I'm pretty sure this hasn't been noticed yet so I'm gonna make this post. Let me know if others had similar experiences.
Anyways, I just noticed today after getting the Google Now update that GN has set a location into work, despite me not explicitly putting one in. I'm guessing this has something to do with the location reporting functionality. It probably noticed that I was in a certain location over X (which I'm guessing is 4) hours and determined that it was my work address since it wasn't my home address (which I think GN auto determined based on where I usually sleep). I think it might've done this before since it once set an internship location as my work location even though I didn't put it in. That internship lasted 4 hours once a week and my current schedule has me working for 5 hours a day 2 days a week, hence how I got my 4 hour estimate above. Anyone else notice something like this happening and any way to turn this helpful feature off, other than to disable location reporting. My schedule changes quarter to quarter and I'm pretty sure it might put one of my classes as a "work" location if I'm in that spot long enough.

Profiling or citizen database in any way is/can be dangerous. Nobody can guarantee future.
Lets have a look at what all information does Google have about YOU through your Android phone :
YOUR NAME
01. Your picture
02. Your complete Contact list with pictures, e-mail ids, phone numbers, birthdays, etc.
03. Whom you met or gonna meet (Calendar) (Btw, there were digital and much powerful calendars way before Google Calendar e.g BlackBerry)
04. With whom you talked, when and how long (Call log) (Read Privacy Policy \ Log information )
05. Your family and other images (Picasa web albums) (Google+ auto-upload)
06. Your WiFi passwords (device backup)
07. Where you are located or went (location)
08. Which sites you visited (Android browser google login)
09. Which device/s you own.
10. Your files (Google drive) (no encryption) (Also Gmail attachments)
11. What you searched (Google search and Now)
12. Your pic (Chrome has Camera permissions) (everything can be used in two ways)
13. Your daily route (Google Now)
14. What you talked with someone through chat (GTalk) (its their servers, right)
15. Finally, your emails and its contents. Read this (I believe we will see many such things in near future as awareness increases)
Ever heard about NSA or PRISM
There is much more to it than meets the eye or this list.
Today, Google and Facebook (primarily Google) knows more about you than your own parents or spouse and that's frightening. If not today then tomorrow.

I understand that they have this data and I don't care for that too much. What I don't get us why it automatically set that location as work when it might not have been. Would be nice if they asked like "we notice you spend a lot of time at X. Would you like to set this as home/work" or something like that.

yes that would be nice  guess they like to determine it for themselves based on their records. No harm in asking them, how they conclude things like that. Nexus is one of their brain child, so it may be the key to that conclusion.

In fact, I strongly believe that all Google (or anyone) services should be Opt-In instead of current Opt-out (as I understand)
For example, when you attach primary Gmail account to your phone everything under Sync (Contact, Calendar, AppData, Pictures, etc) get selected. Instead Google should just present a list of the things that I want to select (Opt-In) like it does when you add another Gmail account to your device.

with Nexus 5 & new to Android Ecosystem, need suggestion

With a heavy heart i have to keep my SEx1 aside and have entered to Android Ecosystem.
I'm a customized freak & made my X1 ROM super stable with my super minimalistic custom rom's, im still going to use that as my primary portable music gear, but for rest of the things Google Nexus 5 is the new companion.
Kitkat is whole new world for me, used gingerbread a a little bit but both are poles apart. hence need some suggestion to keep myself educated with latest trends and tech. Please ignore my noobe-tagged question. So here i start:
No Lollipop ? ?
As broadcasted nexus devices should be the first one to get Android 5.0, Lollipop.
Im yet to get any update & currently running 4.4.4. Any words on when could i expect Lollipop upgrade in my device.
[I don't want to root/ flash until my device is out of warranty].
Contact Backup & Google sync:
a) When starting the device for first time, it prompted me to use google account credential, i did, and it dumped all thousands of my gmail contact in phonebook. Too bad. i have manually deleted all of them from phonebook. and switched-off auto sync.
b) it refused to sync my contact form X1, which was back uped in outlook under win7. Found an alternative, transfered all my contact via bluetooth to nexus 5 and imported them one-by-one. Again when importing in batches, it gives error, which is kind of helpful for me. I only imported selected contact and not the obsolete 8 yrs old contacts
Now the question: How my Sync my contacts without downloading email-contact from gmail. Another gmail account doesn't seems to be ideal as i use email, calendar, drive from this mail. Please suggest.
Customization:
a) I like to keep my phone at minimals. used mycolorscreen- Themer for few days, which let me customize to what i want till great extent. but its getting corrupt by it own at random times, spoiling my widgets location & functionalities and sometime replacing wallpaper with "black" and have uninstalled it now.
Do we have anything similar to HTC / touchflow full screen animated weather for android? roa any alternative to themer which let me customize N5?
b) Lockscreen customization like changing the background according to themer wallpaper and add few information like battery level, weather, etc. I goggled DashClock please let me know what you guys think about it or any other recommendation.
Few App recommendation
Fitness tracker : currently using Pedometer by j4velin, which is good, but it doesn't give me much control, no difference in distance covered if you running or walking, no actual track of distance covered as it derived from the stride length we enter in the setting. Any recommendation in this please ? should i try Google fit app ?
Pulse Light Controller N5 seriously missing "things" in this department, apart from default white glow of unleaded sms, i never noticed any other indication. they should have provided a notification for low-battery and missed call. Currently using Light Flow but i hate its presence always in my notification area. what's XDA's thoughts in this please? I dont need anything with bells and whistles, just a minimal app which show me red light when my battery is low & some other-then-white-color from unreaded SMS & missed calls.
Vibrate on call connect Got ExDailer but im clueless how to make it the default dialer. Also i liked the stock dialer is there any way to make it vibrate when a call connects, i have to install 3rd party app on my phone
Cache cleaner
as im playing installing, uninstalling lots of stuffs these in these experimenal days what would be a recommended app for this, if its mandatory. have used this bloatware Clean Master in my X10i earlier which killed the phone in multiple ways. any other recommendation please, i just want to clean junk files and do not want any antivirus and gold plating.
Thanks in advance.

OTAs are a rollout. They don't give it to everyone at the same time.
You can sideload the OTA instead of waiting, and you don't have to unlock the bootloader for that.
There is also no point in "keeping warranty" since the only way to tell is if you have bootloader unlocked/or tamper flag is left triggered. Bootloader is easily re-locked and the tamper flag isn't that big of a deal to reset unlike on many other devices (you can do it with apps lol..). There is no other way to tell unless you blatantly have modified software. Of course, if the device was defective to the point where it doesn't boot up, then the bootloader/tamper flag/any sort of software doesn't even matter anyways. Also, if you bought from the Play Store, Google will even let you send it in with a custom ROM and kernel if you wanted to.

Mass delete your obsolete contacts from gmail: https://www.google.com/contacts/ then sync them afterwards.

I don't use fitness trackers so I can't say anything about them. The Nexus 5 has a hardware pedometer rather than using sensors like accelerometer/gps/etc to determine steps, which saves a LOT of battery but obviously can't determine distance.
There are a multilude of LED apps.
Cache cleaners are useless since you can wipe cache in recovery anyways, including stock recovery. If you mean for cleaning in general, I don't use anything myself as I don't find it any necessary, but some others do.

Are far as this is concerned, there really isn't any big thing with the Nexus 5 that would not be applicable to other phones. Just read around the forums to see if anything piques your interest.
Thanks for the reply.
I will wait some more time for official OTA update, in the meantime exploring the device. once i done i will do a factory reset anyways
contact things is easier to manage in Gmail interface, thanks for pointing out. Took hours to clean all the contact, but feel good after housecleaning

Huawei community forums...how to file bugs on Huawei phones?

I've been trying to log into Huawei's community forums for a while, but no matter what I try, it results in an error page. It's the most extraordinarily frustrating experience. I wonder if anyone else has any tips to getting logged in.
My main reason for wanting to log in, apart from having a general look for tips, etc, is to find out how to inform them of a bug in their OS. Does anyone have any recommendations for how best to do that?
In fact, I often log in the community forum as my mobile phone is a Huawei device. I would like to help you report the bug.
You may post your bug description here. You can write in English or in Chinese.
If it is in English, I will translate it by myself before submit to the forum .

Well, that's very civilised of you. I'll write in English, since that's the only language I know
Actually, I have three bugs - well, I think they're bugs, except, perhaps, for the first one.
1. This one isn't really a bug, but I bet the people on the Huawei forums can help.
FYI, I use a sim card from CMLink - SIM #1 [1], which piggy back off EE in the UK, and CMCC in China, and provide useful roaming plans for use between the two countries. They only provide data plans limited by the month, and I have signed up for their 22GB plan. To track usage, I have a P10 and have been trying to set it up to automatically calibrate the data usage measure on a daily basis. I think it does this by sending an SMS containing simply 'Check' to CMCC's service number '10086', and extracts the data from the response (not 100% sure about that, but hey). There seems to be a 'calibrate' button in the settings to do this manually (under the usage graph), but when I try I get the message 'Incorrect network provider. Reselect and try again.' I'd really like to get this going.
2. Related to above, I've set the setting to show the usage under the notifications when you drag down from the top of the screen. I've configured my plan information - ie 22GB per month, and starts on the 17th of each month. However, while the 'Today' seems to increase appropriately, the 'Left' is stuck at the maximum. I imagine the 'Total' is supposed to stay at 22GB. I expect the 'Left' to go down as I use it throughout the month.
3. This one is unrelated to above. If I open a browser and go to my web mail site, there is an option on the menu to 'Add to Home screen'. As expected, when I select that option, it does add an icon to the homescreen. Since it is something I want on every page of the homescreen, I drag that icon onto the row on the bottom of the screen that is shown on every page. I do that for a couple of web pages - my email and my calendar. At this point, it all works swimmingly. However, if I reboot the phone, then those icons seem to be moved back onto the homescreen, and also are 'greyed out' and placed under the clocks (the clock widget) I have placed there. So, that's not 'expected'.
What do you think?
Max.

What's your question about logging into that forum?
But as I found, it seems a community forum in Chinese. Almost all posts there are in Chinese. So, will you get any effective response even if you can log in it?
Maybe it's better to contact a local Huawei customer service center in order to get some helps. Do you think so?

Max.

Your three question are really confused and difficult to understand for me as I never used a CMLink sim card.
But I will try my best to get to know your situations and help you as more as I can.
First, let's clarify your 3rd question.
On my Huawei phone, there are at most 5 icons on the row on the bottom of the screen that is shown on every page. Every icon here for apps on my device works fine even if I reboot my device. So, is it a defect of the couple of web pages - email and calendar?
Try to drag an icon of another app or widget there. Check if it will work well, please.
> I never used a CMLink sim card
I don't think there's anything special about the CMLink, except that it works in either country pretty much the same as the other. It is the same as any other SIM card with a monthly limited data plan. So, you could consider that it is the same as a Chinese SIM card, I suppose.
> So, is it a defect of the couple of web pages - email and calendar?
Well, I guess I don't know exactly what the problem is, of course. My impression is that they hadn't considered this use-case much at all - I notice the Huawei browser doesn't have this 'add to homescreen' functionality at all.
However, you prompted me to experiment a bit more, and it doesn't happen with all web pages. Previously, I had my email and calendar on there, and they both were moved back onto the homescreen underneath other icons/widgets and greyed out (and didn't actually work to launch the web pages). However, now, the calendar page does seem to stay on there, and works when I click it. I also have tried both Chrome and Brave, and they both seem to show the same problem. I can't really see how it could be a web page problem, since nothing is being launched. I suppose it could be a web *manifest* problem, since that is where the icons usually come from...though looking in chrome devtools, I see that it has no manifest, and so the icons must be taken from the <meta> in <head>. The calendar, which does seem to be staying on the quick launch bar, also doesn't have a manifest file - so not that then.
It's pretty easy to reproduce though:
1. open your browser (chrome, probably) on https://www.fastmail.fm/
2. click on the menu and select 'Add to homescreen'
3. 'Add' on the dialog
4. 'ADD on the next dialog
5. go to the homescreen and locate the shortcut
6. drag and drop it onto the quick launch bar.
7. restart
Well, that's frustrating - I was writing those down as I did them, and when I restarted, it looked fine :/ I wonder if it makes any difference which position the icons are in on...ah, yeah, it looks like it is more reproducible if the shortcut is the left-most. Arghh. This time I lost a *native* app I had on there too - WeChat of all things - you'd imagine they'd make sure that works fine. Actually, it wasn't the WeChat app I had on there, but a shortcut to one of the contacts - you can add a wechat contact from the menu on their item in the wechat contacts list - 'Add to Desktop' it is in English. Hrm I notice that, while the web page shortcuts get moved back onto the homescreen, the WeChat contact shortcut is just gone....and I can't even add it again from WeChat - it says it is, but nothing appears :/
Gosh, it's really a bit of a mess. Perhaps it's too broken and inconsistent to even bother filing any bug. I'm tempted to apply for a job there to try and help, but in any case, I can't see too many Westerners being happy with such issues I suppose Chinese people just don't do this sort of thing.

Well, the question is where I can get help with logging in - but, if it is all in Chinese, I would modify my question to be: where can I find forums that are in English, and corresponding community support? Since there is a huge market for English speakers, I imagine they have somewhere for us to learn how to use it, and ask questions and report problems, etc?

Yes, your requirement is very reasonable.
When I posted some questions about mobile phone usage here, there would be someone would replied to my thread and tried to get more detailed info to help me. They said they were the Huawei official staff.
I will post a thread about "where for you to ask questions and report problems in English" for you soon.
On the other hand, you can access the forum either via web application (mobile web as well as computer web) or via an official app. You can also try the app. If you need it and can not find the apk, I will show you the link.

Thanks. I look forward to finding out if there is a forum for English language users somewhere. I do kind of feel like they could spend more attention to this requirement, unless, of course, I'm just not looking hard enough. I remember when I was using a ZTE phone - they were very popular due to having front-facing speakers, and so had a pretty good US based forum and it was very useful. [Side note - I wish Huawei would produce a phone with front-facing speakers].
I don't think an app will get me very far...I probably have it on my phone already - I see one called 'HiCare', for example, and there's the top line on the settings. It's all very unfamiliar and things so often don't seem to quite work as expected. I kind of wish the Huawei stores had 'help' sessions like they do (or did anyway) in Apple stores.

1. About CMLink, okay, I just posted a thread for you to Huawei community about how to report issue about Huawei phone usage for those speak English. Wait for their response, please.
2. Now I have gotten to know the feature 'Add to Home Screen'. In my Firefox Focus browser, I found it. I will have a try soon.

I tried Firefox Focus just now.
When I opened a simple web page, then selected 'Add to Home screen' from the menu, entered some words for the icon title, tap 'Add' at last.
But it was so strange that then I couldn't find this icon on the home screen at all. It must be a bug of Huawei EMUI system. The QC engineers should ignore this use case.
Btw, it's time to home for me. I will try to help you tomorrow. Would you like to support my apps available on Google Play? Thanks in advance.

Ah, I hit this too. I suspect it is simply that you need to grant the app permissions to add to homescreen in the phone's settings in the Apps->permissions...or somewhere like that.
It's a bit odd that they don't get this automatically...I never had this issue with Google Android phones.

You are right. I granted the app permission 'add to homescreen' to Firefox Focus, and then tried the feature again.
The function works well. Even after rebooting, the icon is still there on the row on the bottom of the screen that is shown on every page. So, I misunderstood that feature.

Cool. It seems like it might be working better for you than for me. I've not tried firefox yet, but chrome and brave both seem to lose any shortcuts on the quick launch bar, but not always. It is also quite curious what has happened to the shortcut from wechat...since that's a native android app :/
Perhaps you're on a more recent Android/EMUI version? What kind of phone are you using?
TBH, I'm seriously considering the P30 Pro 5G when I get back to the UK, and this is sort of a test run with a hand-me-down phone which I presume is very similar in UI/UX, so it is all 'influencing' my decision.

In fact, my phone is an old model, Mate 8 with EMUI/Android 8.0. I also have a wechat installed on my device.
Btw, would you like to leave a 5-star for my app which is available on Google Play? Thanks.

LOL, well I would be happy to, except I don't have Google Play on my phone...or Google anything, I think....except Chrome, of course. I'm a web app developer, so I prefer to use web apps than native android apps.

I posted a thread in that forum for you yesterday. https://club.huawei.com/thread-21560821-1-1.html
But till now, I have not gotten any response. So, I sent a PM to the ADMIN just now.
You may try to log in the web app or the native app for the community forum. There you might post a thread in English as your device language is English. Have a try, please. Good luck to you.
Yesterday, I managed to contact the CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group, Richard Yu, through his social network account. But till now I have not gotten his reply to my PM.
I suggest you post your issues on the Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Huawei/ . Good luck to you.
