[Q] Green 3G/Signal icons - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So sometimes the 3G/Signal icons switch back and fourth between being green and grey. Whats the difference?

The same as they did on non-Gingerbread phones when the arrows would flash from grey to white: the arrows light when the connection is active for both uploading and downloading.

Green indicates signal and grey is no signal. Same thing with wifi.

heh ya i had a brain fart

Green means that there is an active connection to Google's sync servers. (for syncing contacts, email, etc.)

[Q] Why do the signal icons change color in Android 2.3?

Sometimes my cell signal strength and data connection or wifi icons turn white.
Why does this happen? It doesn't seem to have any predictable effect. Sometimes when white, everything works normal. Sometimes, my data connection doesn't work at all when they are white.
What gives?
Green means that you have a connection to Google servers. Simple as that really.

What's going on when the radio's indicator is green or white?

I've noticed this but couldn't figure it out. 1x, 3g, 4g, and wifi will show up white in the beginning and then go green. Now, I have 1 bar 4g signal and 2 bars whatever signal right next to it but they have been staying white for a while now. I have throughput all this time so it's not an indicator if the net connection is there or not. Someone have an explanation?
disable background data and youll notice the indicators remain white. green will indicate bg data is enabled and connection to google services(not necessarily meaning data is being transmitted)

Green is when it's connected to Google.
Yeah, but this is happening on it's own. I just saw a different combination, green 4g and white signal bar to the right of that.

[Q] Clarification on status going from grey to green?

Kind of a dumb question, but I'm just looking for clarification here:
The wifi and signal bars' color hop from grey to green. It's totally random. Any idea why that is? I'm assuming that the grey color means that was the last known signal the phone had and the green color means that those radios are now active.
However, I've made calls and streamed data while the colors were grey. It's kind of driving me crazy. What's going on?
Green = connected to Google servers

[Q] 3G/WiFi icons color indicating connection to google servers/push?

Hey guys... are there any differences in 3G(H)/Wifi icons when there is no connection to google servers?
I mean in 4.3 it was grey when you didnt have a connection and blue when everything was ok. Are there any indicators in 4.4?
All I see is white icons, even here at work where I used to get grey icons in 4.3.
They turn a muted shade of orange.

Bring down the notification bar, tap Settings and the phone/data connection icon will have a muted orange color to indicate you're logged into Google Services. Using a custom ROM or framework might restore the original idea from older versions of Android (made more sense to me I suppose to know if it was logged in with just a glance, now it takes a tap or two to find out for sure at the same glance), but the icons on the notification bar will remain grey or white or whatever that color is now regardless.

Orange when everything is working properly, or orange when disconnected? Could you post a screenshot.
Mine seem to always be white, but I haven't gotten disconnected from Google services yet as far as I can tell.

The icons on the notification bar will always be grey or white or whatever that new KitKat color happens to be; if you bring that bar down and tap the Settings icon and get the Quick Links (I think that's what they call them) you'll see the other icons (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, carrier icon, etc) and if you're logged into Google Services that's where the icon(s) will be the muted orange color.
I don't have a Nexus 5 (or any smartphone at this time) so I can't provide a screenshot, sorry. Think of the muted orange as "the new blue" in that respect: if it's white, you're not logged in/connected to Google Services. If it's the muted orange, you are, but again the notification bar icons at the top of the screen will not change color, iirc. This is how KitKat works now.

Incorrect. Mine are always orange when NOT connected.
From Android-Quick-Start-Guide.pdf
In Quick Settings only, white bars in the Wi-Fi or
mobile signal indicators indicate the signal strength
of a normal Internet connection, while orange bars
indicate that some web services may not be functioning
normally. For example, sometimes the mobile signal bars
turn orange briefly when you turn on your device, until a
full connection is established.

Yep, orange means no internet connection or no connection to Google. You want the signal indicators to be white, not orange.
Well there ya go...
What may be the reason that my Nexus 5 is not connecting to Google Play Services (orange colour bars) on mobile data after switching off WiFi, when it connects to Google Play Services without a problem on WiFi (mobile and WiFi bars white color in quick settings menu)?
It started to happen to me some time ago on 4.4.1 and 4.4.2 ROMs. First I thought it was because I was still on original 4.4 bootloader and radio. So I fastboot flashes Google factory 4.4.2 image and did a factory reset. Still the same problem even on full stock (just superSU 1.80 rooted but no mods). I fleshed Cataclysm 12 Dec. And still the same, after switching off WiFi, mobile signal toggle changes colour from white to orange and stays orange even after it gets 3G or H signal. I have internet, I can open web pages on browser, but I had problems with Google maps searching for the address or setting navigation route.
All advices highly appreciated.
Edit:
Problem solved. I fastboot flashed 4.4 factory image and let it OTA to 4.4.2. Even after routing no problem with orange colour mobile signal bars in quick settings menu.
I don't know why fastboot flashing 4.4.2 factory image straight away did not help and I had to get back to 4.4 and through OTA to 4.4.2...
Anyway, I'm back on SlimKAT last weekly and happy it's gone.

[Q] Wifi & Cellular Icons are white - problem?

I have a new Nexus 5 and my wifi and cell icons in the status bar are always white. On my other Android devices they were blue. The Interwebs tell me that the icons are white when they cannot connect to Google servers, but I'm having no trouble with Gmail, Hangouts, etc. Is this a change in KitKat? Are they always white? Do I need to worry about them?

My Nexus 5 has white bars as well and I'm connected to all of Googles Services without an issue. If you're having troubles, the white bars are not related.

They aren't as useful as in previous versions of Android. To see the connection status, pull down with two fingers, they will be orange to indicate a bad google connection.
I see no reason why this couldn't be in the main notification bar like always.
Thanks!
Reason given yesterday by some Google guy was that keeping the animation up in the status bar cost a lot more CPU than one would think. Also ordinary users had no idea what the coloring or animation meant anyway. The two finger pulldown placement was meant as a compromise. The switch from blue to white was to allow less intrusion on app displays through the transparent bar.
