[Q] Video Out over 3.5mm - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know that the galaxy s i9000 as well as the vibrant support this feature, and was wondering if anyone had tried it on a nexus s. I don't have the cables to test it.

I don't have the proper cables to test this either. But I don't see why they wouldn't advertise this if the Nexus S was capable of this feature.

They didn't advertise it on the Vibrant, it was only until CNET did a review that they found out about it, kind of like how they didn't advertise that the Vibrant supported the 1900 HSPDA band.

I did not know that. Seems like all hope isn't lost then. This would be a feature I would be very interested in. I have my old Zune cable somewhere in the house. I'll see if I can dig them up and test it out. Hopefully someone with the cables in hand can test it out for us though.

Galaxy has TV-out in settings, I am sure NS doesnt

I tried to connect to tv with my nokia n82 cable that has the 3 rca plugs but no joy.
Also, there is no tv-out option in the display menu

Is this something that could be enabled through some custom roms? If it is capable of this

[Q] TV-Out on the Nexus S?

The Galaxy S has TV-out capability via its headphone jack. Is this true of the Nexus S as well? This is a deciding factor for whether or not I buy one. No one has mentioned this

so far I have not read anything about this in the specs...however, I would be very surprised if it is not available (or at the very least be "unlocked)
Google loves puzzles and games. This is evident from their april fools jokes, to more recently the "nexus s challenge"
I can guarantee there will be a whole slew of things that get "opened up/discovered" in the NS. Remember when the N1 came out...now look at it, 720p video, touch focus, fm radio, etc.
After plugging the video out cable into the Nexus S headphone jack, nothing happened. This leads me to believe that it does not support video out in its current state. Perhaps it is there, waiting for some custom firmware magic to wake up
Edit: I also saw no tvout option in the display settings.
I also pluged in a video out cable but didn't get a connection.
anyone success outputing to TV??
maybe by micro USB to HDMI cable??
On the Galaxy S this is something that needs to be enabled.
Following the same pattern the same would be required in the Nexus S.
As someone referred before maybe this is something along like the FM radio on the Nexus one...
I have money 4 anyone who can get this working!

ran out of jacks that support this feature pretty much the same reason why BT 2.1 was used.....
Have got a source for this? I thought that the hardware was there, just a software issue..?
And isn't the mic connection of the 3.5 jack used to run the video?

Don't see that this proves that it can be done via the headphone jack, nor - as an extension - by solder-scared punters in general. Until we see how they did it (ideally headphone, unideally hardwired to motherboard) I don't think that we can tout this as anything more than a promising possibility...
Just found this thread coming from a Google Search...
Still no answer or any clue?
I would be so disapointed if there was no tv-out feature
Phone to TV, DLNA for the moment: iMediaShare, skifta or some similar application.
I've been digging around, the SOC definitely supports simultaneous video out like the vibrant does.
I'm trying to pin point whether or not the Nexus S uses the same headphone hardware as the rest of the Galaxy line. I can't seem to find anything about it. That's going to be the crucial point on whether it can be hacked in or not. My gut tells me samsung used the same parts as it would be most cost efficient way to do so.
The SOC actually supports 1080p over USB => hdmi connection, (the actual USB hardware is probably not in place though, as the only galaxy line that used HDMI is the EPIC and that has a seperate mini HDMI port).
We just need to find an interested dev to jump into the kernels and libraries. Can we say Bounty? I'm down for at least $15, if someone wants to organize the bounty.

This is complete BS is the Nexus S doesn't do TV out! I mean, I had to get over my little crying fit since It doesn't have an external SD slot (like my Vibrant), but NOW since it doesn't do TV out, why should I get the f*@! phone . Is it worth turning in my sweet 'rooted' Vibrant running an awesome NERO v5 rom for the 'Pure Google Experience' I was willing to throw it all away to get my Nexus S, so I can have untethered updates straight from Google, BUT NO TV OUT!!!???!!! I use VR Glasses on my Vibrant to watch movies, surf, and play games, but since Nexus S doesn't support TV out, then F#@* IT!!!
I guess i'll wait if there is a software solution for TV out.

[Q] Is there a way to test NFC feature?

It has been over 5 months since I purchased Nexus S but I've yet to found a person that owns Nexus S nor ran into a place that uses NFC technology.
I was wondering if there is a way to test NFC.. maybe like a purchase a chip or sticker (if there is, could anyone help link to a NFC that is compatible with Nexus S)?
Are these re-writeable too? And what are somethings I can do with it? Like turn on/off the light?
Thanks!
Well Portland, OR is a "test market" and I'll be there tomorrow, so I'll see what I find.
My guess is nothing more than NFC stickers on businesses similar to codes you can simply scan with your camera.
I mean you can hold your credit card (if it's a blink capable card on the back) and it will beep at you, but NFC is far in it's infancy to be useful.
This app can do stuff when comes in contact with certain NFC chips and can also rewrite them. At that thread you can find suggestions about which chips works fine with our phones and where to buy them from.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=980741
if your in the uk try smartcardfocus, i have used them for stickers and postage was very quick.
I'm in U.S.
I like these (http://www.tagstand.com/collections/mifare-classic-stickers/products/nfc_circle_25mm_l) but these are sold out at the moment.
Thanks for the app link. Now I have better understanding of what it can do!

S Band Vs. Other Brands

So I have been doing some research on the S Band and Comparing it to similar products like Jawbone Up and Nike+ Fuel band. I am not sure which one I will go with yet but there are things about each of them I like more than the other. Example, I like that the Nike+ Fuel Band has a basic LED Display and displays time, The Jawbone Up does tracking of sleeping and vibration alarm.
I didn't read anything about the Jawbone Up connecting Wirelessly, uses aux port to "Simple Sync". Same with the Nike+ Fuel Band, it tells of plugging it into the USB to Sync. I have NOT found anything that says the S Band will sync via bluetooth but based upon the HRM and S Scale using Bluetooth, thats what I believe it will be.
If anyone knows more specs on the S band please post them or the source of them. For those of you considering the S Band, what do you think of the other options?
What I really want is a band that has a built in HRM, with a display. Not sure if it will be compatible with the S4 or S Health but I am keeping an eye on these watchs.

Isn't the Nike+ band not compatible with android?

The Fuel band does not offer android support, i wonder why as the product has been out for awhile, it does sync wirelessly to any apple product but doesn't track sleeping habit and its battery life isn't stellar either, i get about 4 days, if not less.
Jawbone Up does not offer wireless syncing capability, it sync via your 3.5mm audio jack. I also read that it has some durability issues, like it scuff up easy, not that it affects the functions or anything. It is stated to last 7 days per charge however. It does offer sleep monitor, silent alarm...etc.
The Basis is pretty cool, but it quotes 4 day battery life, in practice i'm guessing is more like 2-3 days, which makes it a pain to deal with, the bluetooth 2.1 does not improve its image of a long lasting device. Its also $199, kinda pricey.
The Alpha is just a high end HRM, but is nice as there's a color indicator letting you know if you hit your targeted heart rate or not. They also didn't share the battery life on the device, which i assume is not long either.
Here is another product which i think is the best of all of them out there, the Fitbit Flex , 7 day battery life, Bluetooth 4.1, sleep monitor, calorie counter, activeness tracker, vibration alarm...etc. No led display(just some lights) or HRM however. The cheapest of them all too at 99 bucks, too bad is not out yet.
S-Band should do everything the Jawbone or the Fitbit band does, but that huge samsung logo is kinda ugly imo, don't know the battery life either at this point, i'll post the info as i see it.
Thanks for the info, I like the Basis because it has has the HRM built in but like you said its kind of pricey and with bluetooth 2.1 and a short battery life might not be worth the price. I will keep the FitBit Flex in mind but will probably hold out until something is made with the HRM built in. Can't have it all I guess, at least not yet LoL.
the reason these Bluetooth devices aren't compatible with android is because android doesn't support Bluetooth Low Energy, like apple does.. however bt4.0 devices can, so 3rd party accessories creators are starting to add support for galaxy phones and HTC one x

Android in general really needs to step up their audio and bluetooth support.
Shame of the price of this, seems ok, but I wouldn't pay more than $50 (paid $100 for my wife's fitbit, and that was too much)

Bluetooth 4.0 should be enabled in the next android build, Google hinted at bluetooth 4.0 for the galaxy nexus a little while ago and stated it was coming in a future update.

I'm using the Fitbit one and FitBit is coming out with a band as well. It syncs with my Note 10.1, the Note 2 and S3. It should sync with the S4 too. I hope S Health will be a partner since MyFitnessPal, Edmondo and bunch of others.Fitbit App Gallery. Even if it doesn't, the fit bit app is pretty good.
any news when tthe S band will be released?
Anyone? Bueller?

[Q] Docking Station, anyone...?

I still wonder how it is possible that business devices like the Note 8.0 do not get a range of "pro" accessories from the get go, if anyway...
Does anyone know of some device specific docking station by Samsung or some OEM? Perhaps something has been anounced?
Thank You very much in advance!
Regards, Yoko
I don't know of any device specific, true docking stations, but the following are several types of stands that I've been considering:
http://www.amazon.com/Arkon-Portable-Fold-Up-Playbook-IPM-TAB1/dp/B000CKVOOY/ and http://www.amazon.com/IPAD-ST-Universal-Tablet-Stand-Kindle/dp/B0045JNBNU/
http://www.amazon.com/KB-Covers-Stand-iPad-Black/dp/B003VFALEQ/

http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Tablets-Readers-including-Samsung/dp/B0064EL2DK/
Thank You for the links, but at least for me one, if not the only reason to get a docking station would be hassle free charging and maybe syncing via USB or MHL linking to a TV, but mainly charging.
Generic devices still force You to plug the tablet in at the right position / angle.
Perhaps it´s only bugging me, but I can not wrap my head around the fact, that any 20$ cordless phone for home use has a charging station and for high end smartphones and "hybrids" like the Note 8 we still have to fiddle around with micro usb cables & plugs until some chinese factory manufactures the first halfway fitting, cheap looking dock six moths after the device is widely available (/rant over)

I understand; that makes sense.
And I hear you regarding the lack of sophisticated docking stations. I wonder if part of the problem is that people are so mobile these days (and thus you're not going to take your docking station with you, most likely) and also quick to upgrade to new devices (in which case your old docking station may no longer have a use)? And if the combination of those two makes for less demand, or at least not enough perceived demand by manufactures to invest in developing the tech?
But I agree with you that it would be very cool to have a docking station that does what you describe.
Samsung's Smart Dock Multimedia Hub (#EDD-S20JWE) for the Note II & S4 "Should" work with the Note 8.0, but I don't know how stable it would be in this dock since it is made for the smaller devices.
I have this dock for my Note II and it works well. As soon as I receive my Int'l Note 8.0 3G (~May 8-11) I will test it and report back.
I'm thinking the following post relates to what @bbfoto is talking about, correct?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2244383
^Yes.
I just posted there as well. Thanks!
Thanks a lot for the input guys!
The Samsung Smart dock looks to be the closest to what I have in mind, though as pointed out in the linked thread it does not support the tablet in any considerable way.
I was looking for something more like the Nexus 7 docking station, unfortunately I can not link to images, beeing a newbie and all...
Well, who knows, perhaps sometime in the near future some company will think of (business) users, who simply want to throw their tablet on a perfectly fitting dock while at their desk.
Thanks again folks!

Is the HDMI output the same resolution as the tablet or can it out put at higher res? Id be interested in it if it was higher res as it would make andriod office suites a viable option for me. At the moment I find the resolution hinders its use, especially with spreadsheets (which is what I use the most). From what I can gather it just mirrors the tablets resolution.
I might get one anyway as i like the idea of being able to plug in my PS3 controller via USB and play on some emulators. I find emulator a pain to use with touch controls.

It would be same resolution, just scaled. For example my MHL kit gives 1080p, my miracast kit gives 720p. Same amount of content on screen. Ditto if I use an adapter that only does VGA output.
You can't change that metric.

You better read all the one review in there.
Well the case isn't a factor since I dont have one, if only he'd review the product before giving it 1 star for his case not fitting. That would have been more helpful.
Does anyone have a solution for hooking up a monitor mouse and keyboard to this phone that supports 1080p?
I hear the official Samsung dock does not support 1080p for any of the phones. I want to get a dock for a galaxy s4 with extended battery but no one wants a blurry upscaled image. I would be fine with just a simple chain of adapters or anything, I just want it to work.
I may even accept just an HDMI adapter and then try to get a blue tooth keyboard and mouse does that work well?
I looked at the afunta and they still do not have any reviews.
