[Guide] Complete Guide to Mod FlyTouch/Eken ROMs - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hello, I've recently started a forum for modifying Eken/FlyTouch ROMs. The guides may also apply on other WM8505 based roms, some roms however have different bootloaders so some modifications cannot be made.
TechKnow.FreeForums.org
Some topics:
All about animation.data, decompressing, saving, reloading
All about wallpaper modding in the rom
Altering ROM Memsize/Swapsize
Boosting boot time of a ROM
Browser's password storage location
Change bootlogo animation
Change default and active input method
Changing default opening location of the filebrowser
Changing default snap (photo) directory
Changing the ROM's home (desktop) layout / shortcuts
Edit screen / vibration / screen time-outs / animation settings
Edit sound settings / ringtone / volumes / behavior
Enable installing non-market apps
Enable/Disable usb mass storage
HowTo preset the default browser settings
Modding some default settings like gps, sounds, lock...
Modify airplane mode behavior
Modify external connections like wifi bluetooth
Modifying the default browser bookmarks
Pre-modding general settings
Slipstreaming (pre-deploying) apps in rom
Turn on / off accelerometer's screen orientation
Viewing / Converting movies
I hope this information will be useful to many people. At the moment I'm working on how to mod the rescriptcmd, if anyone has a way please PM me or contact me on TechKnow. Read the threat about the rescriptcmd in Tablets \ Open Board \ Gome FlyTouch / iRobot / ePad @ TechKnow for more information about what is tried to mod the rescriptcmd.

Forgot to mention that there are also other topics about the devices on the site

why is it that almost every flytouch epad rom is hosted on Filefront, and continually loops pages when trying to download?
wtb working mirror plz!

done, mediafire upload

This is so helpful. i will try a few of your roms and see if I can get my useless craplet to do something... well, less useless!

Glad you've found it useful pfckirk!

source and joystick support
Hi,
does anybody know where I can get the source for an flytouch3 image (currently I`m using Tim6a).
I want to have joydev.ko compiled for it, which would allow to play e.g.NES games with a joypad.
Or can anyone compile joydev.ko for arm 11 processors?
thanks for any help!

Can you put a Casimir card in this thing? I am in the US T-Mobile, and if so where do you put it?!??

Flytouch 7 running android 4.0.4
I am in dire need of help with this one. I have never rooted something foreign. I am having probems bc I initially used Z4Root and it went thru and then now I am stuck on "android" boot loop. I tried holding HOME and POWER and it takes me to "android laying down with triangle" but no recovery options. Did I brick? Can this be repaired? I have look at Blazing dragons but not famliar with the process. Can u please lead me to where I can find process I can follow?

BenQ E72: collection of findings

Hi all,
...my recently bought BenQ E72 (candidate to replace my Tornado) has kept me busy and below is my findings-log (which most of them I could not find elsewhere, so they may be useful for you as well).
My device is intended for BT Fusion Service (which is no more offered) and this may explain the cheap price at Expansys.UK (I have not bought it from them, but from a different source in the UK offering refurbished ones).
Unfortunately my device was sent without a wired headset (which I am still struggeling to get). My investigations on the dual-use of the mini-USB are so far failing to decode the use of the wires. I suspect that (just like for the Motorola Razor V3) some active electronic parts are required in the headset to communicate with the mobile.
Cleanup \Windows folder:
- Remove locales not needed for MunduIM (fr, it, br, ...directories)
- \Data folder is for beetzRSS -> move to SD card in options menu
- \Java folder for JBED -> move to SD card, change keys in registry at (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JBlend)
- \Profiles folder for PIE -> move to SD card by changing paths at: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders (may not be persistent if card is not ready at boot time or is removed)
- \Rings folder for ringtones -> also in \windows but are not referenced from there, so they stay here
- \skins folder is for HipCam (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Emuzed Inc\HipCam)
- \sounds folder is for Camera sounds (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Pictures\Camera\OEM)
- \themes folder is for HipCam (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Emuzed Inc\HipCam)
- \traveller folder for FIZZ Traveler
(move to SDCard, change items in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\FizzSoftware\MicroClient\TRS)
Ring tones selected from:
\windows\rings\*.*
\windows\ring*.* (no midi)
Install more than one T9 language:
- get packages from http://melgurth.ovh.org/index.php?page=downloads
- download also the package that you already have + the ones you want (so all have the same version)
- install them all, ignore device reboot requests in the meantime
- edit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\T9 Input Method\MUI\Languages string "Available" to contain concatenated (separated by comma) all language numbers
- reboot device
Retrieve hidden settings/options in the setup menus by removing the commenting in the relevant XML files:
- callforwarding.cpl.xml get CFU settings for Data and Fax (Phone->Call Forwarding)
- clckalrm.cpl.xml get Automatic Timezone setting from Network (Clock&Alarm->TimeZone->AutoTimeZone)
- telephonygsm.cpl.xml get Frequencyband selection (Phone->Band Selection = usually "automatic")
- connectgsm.cpl.xml get SMS delivery options (Connections->SMS Service = usually "circuit only")
Info:
This device obviously is configured differently for several operators (see \windows\initflashfiles.dat).
Mentioned interesting strings are Orange, movistar, Flashlite, etc..
Intersting that the BT Fusion does not have an entry here.
Power Drain:
- batteryfunctions do not deliver drain and temperature, but the backup battery voltage is reported
Drain is (rough values):
- 60 mA Display visible
- 90 mA Lowest Light
- 110 mA more
- 120 mA normal
- 130 mA high
- 150 mA highest
BT creates peaks ~ 10 mA on top roughly once per second
WiFi creates peaks ~60 mA similar rate as above
- power off still drains the battery to charge the backup battery but only a few µA (micro Ampere)
Interesting Programs (not linked via .lnk files) in \windows:
- DevHealth.exe will also be called by LogMaster and creates a very elaborate memory and process report. It is named "mem_1.txt" and is either located in the Storage Card root or the main memory root, sized ~ 292kB. Subsequent calls will generate files named mem_<n>.txt where <n> relates to the called number. This file includes the DLL relationship of all active loaded modules, so it is easy for ROM cleaners to sort out the debug ROM remains.
-> This is the key application to investigate further any modifications of Startup options or ROM modifications.
- LogMaster.exe sets various trace and log points, can call netlogctl.exe, swmodemtrace.exe, celogflush.exe, DevHealth.exe, WinsockLogApp.exe, links to LogUtil.dll which relates to logfiles: OSImageVersion.txt, sqpco.log, sqmodem.log, sqdriver.log, sqatcmd.log)
- QDW.exe (internall referenced: "QDW.exe is launched by AppExceptionMonitor.exe", but this .exe is missing, only a dll is remaining) This would read (or write) to files in \Windows\System\ExceptionExtraLogs\. It calls copylog.exe to do the job.
If directly called it asks for a memory card and generates a directory \yyyymmdd_hhmmss\ExceptionExtraLogs\ generating (copying) files ELog.txt KITL.txt qatcmd.log qdriver.log qmodem.log qpco.log verinfo.txt call is hinished with "copy failed".
- PreForWSA.exe is called via HLKM\init\Launch.. and may prepare WinSockLogging (may call \Windows\WinsockLogApp.exe)
- prtscrn.exe generates a screendump of the current state, it is also called via long press of the Vol-Up key and generates a file called scncap<n>.jpg in the "\My Documents" folder (<n> is a sequence number starting at 1).
ToDo:
- remove UMAClient.exe from \HKLM\init\Launch.. but still keep WiFi switched off after reboot. UMAClient cares for the settings in Settings->Connections->WiFi transmission. If not loaded also the WiFi mode to disable WiFi if not connected after <time> does not work.
Candidates for ROM Cleanup:
- CeRegExport.exe (not a valid Windows CE application), executes on PC and links to rapi.dll to communicate with the device.
- D3DMDemo.exe (just displays a boiuncing ball and a rotating colored cube)
- D3DMPerf.exe (displays a colored cylinder, then quits)
- related dlls: D3DM_TI3D.dll, d3dm.dll (not referenced in mem_1.txt)
- AppExceptionMonitor.dll
...more to add here once ROM cooking will be possible
What do these programs do?
- ERS.exe (stays resident, links to coredll.dll only)
...
enjoy + enhance,
bye

hi
thanks for your effort.
i'll study this report and compare with my e72 (by expansys, sim free and app locked, unlocked by utility found on the net)
can't edit the windows files
Thanks for the information. I have been trying to get access to the 'band' setting for some time. However I have been unable to edit the actual xml files. I have tried using SDA unlocker and RAPI and keep getting 'phone is unlockable'. How are you editing these files?
You cannot edit them onboard as they are in ROM. Copy them to your PC, remove the Read-Only attribute, edit and copy it back to the device. It will put in device memory and virtually overwrite the ROM copy. If you delete it on the device the old ROM copy will be used again.
Thanks. That is what I have been trying to do, but every time I get '...could not be placed on device. You do not have permission to create item'. It is like the file system is locked, but I cannot find a way to get past it. Any ideas?
Oh, yes you need to unlock it first. No clue how I did it, it is also not directly mentioned in my old blog. But from there are some links to other sites - you need to look it up there. It is basically the same thing that needs to be done on any WinMo device. Have you tried to search here already (use "E72 Unlock" as a start)?
Thanks. I was able to unlock the phone, copy the xml files off make the changes (removed the commenting), and copy them back to the device. However when I try to use a control panel function that relies on one of these xml files I get 'the control panel document telphonygsm.cpl.xml cannot be loaded. Verify the XML and try loading the control panel again.'
The XML is well formed (as best as I can tell), yet I get this every time I swap in the modified file I get this. If I put the original back in place everything is fine. It looks like the XML is bad, but I can't find anything wrong with it.
Ok, I think I figured it out. In the section that was commented out there were languages that were not relevant to what I had setup on the phone. Once I removed those it accepted the XML files and I was able to view the control panel. Thanks for your help.
Good stuff here. Bump up.
Has anyone found a way to change default hardkey mappings ?
Impressive! Thank you for your hard work. I have the same phone and I am glad we can all share our findings here.
I believe a good source of information will be in the engineering menu which I can't access (yet).
I don't plan on hitting random codes but I can tell you how to enter a code if you want to:
##*[Numbers]#
Be warned, there are codes that will trash your ROM, so be careful!
Also, I am planning on running this on my phone when I have some free time:
http://www.fewbits.com/startmgr/
I will log my findings asap
Cheers from Argentina!
Dear All,
I have a benq e72 since one year. The problem; once I wake up in the morning (three days before); I saw my PDA was not functioning and all applications inside were referred as "not found" icons.
I simply tried to power it off ... not suceeded ... it was completely hanged.
I removed the battery and restarted. dead .. it shows me only BenQ (the very initial screen) .. no more going to windows.
I tried to master reset the device by clicking right key + power button .. but again not succeded ...it shows me "proceeding master reset" .. and nothing proceed up actually.
I tried to update the loader .. by clicking left key + power button .. same situation .. nothing happened.
I tried the KITL too... by clicking home + power button ...
I tried to upgrade the rom to wm 6.1 or 6.5 ... i followed your posts ... but shows me "download ebood error" ... again not succeeded ..
the warranty is finished also ...
Can any one help .. please ....
What if you buy a new battery and shove it in? Would that work?

There is the orginal xml files for who forget backup these..
The original files stay in the ROM - even if you "overwrite" them with the changed files. What you see in the \windows directory is an overlay of the ROM filesystem with a directory of the same name where you can write to. So in fact you just "overlay" the ROM file with one on the device. You cannot loose the original file - hence no need for a backup
You detect those files in ROM usually by their Read-only attribute, but to be sure use Totalcommander CE - it shows in the file properties if it is a ROM file.

FLASHING Cortex A8 Freescale imx515 - Herotab m802 / Step by Step + screenshoots

Hello,
Sorry for my english, try to be kind with a french geek
I thought it would be great to give to the community a tutorial step by step with pistures and screenshoots
Here is the method i used to open the tablet and flash the ROM when i "bricked" it while trying to activate Google accounts
This ROM is not really an update, i prefer asking it rescue ROM for bricked tablets.
"HOW TO FASH THE TABLET" - TUTORIAL in english :
docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=explorer&chrome=false&embedded=true &srcid=0B96pdh3MCBWgNDVjMjdiNTMtY2E2YS00ZWYzLThmYj ItN2U0ZmY3N2E0NDFh&authkey=COyCmKsH&hl=en
(copy link in your browser adress bar)
CUSTOM ROM :
docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B96pdh3MCBWgNDJhMTIxNTktNmE3Yi00MjI4LThjN zQtODkzNDc0MzAyZTc3&sort=name&layout=list&num=50
(copy link in your browser adress bar)
Unfortunately, the Android Market has been disabled due to too many issues. But alternativ markets have been installed to make your life easier ;-)
IMAGE FLASHING TOOL - it is still the same, but if you need it :
apad-france.fr/components/com_agora/img/members/268/usbit.zip
(copy link in your browser adress bar)
CHANGES
:
• Remove unneeded or Chinese apps (AppStore + HANDONAPP + Agpsstatus) which unnecessarily polluted the tablet memory.
• Enabling Google accounts
• GMAIL
• GOOGLE TALK
• MAPS: LATITUDE option functional (visibility of your Google contacts on the card)
• Alternative MARKETS: SlideME + APKTOR (very interesting market because of the possibility to add sites apps url to enhance the catalog of applications - for that Google search is my friend)
• Video Player: MPlayer (nicer than the original video app)
:
This is a "beta" version so are not fully functional:
• HARD RESET or restore to the factory datas. I did not yet managed to change the restore file, so if you HARD RESET tablet, you will restore all the craps from original firmware ... sorry ☹ So the only way to restore this custom ROM is to flash the tablet.
• Android Market: i can not keep system stability (I unfortunately am not computer) and the tablet "Brick" systematically. I decided not to install Google Market in this version. This will be the subject of the next version i hope☺
• Reccuring error message "closing framework ..." just click on" force quit ". No impact on the operating system running.
ON THE FIRST BOOT (Google account activation) :
• You see the the welcome message with ANDROID logo and the clicking hand (take the opportunity to change the language if necessary)
• Click the screen 4 corners in the direction of clockwise starting at the top left corner and going to the right
• Select "SetupWizard ..." in the selection list that appears
• You will be able to set up Google accounts - If you do not automatiicly enter Google accounts set up, go back to the desktop and select GMAIL.
• You can now enter your Google Account login (gmail address without extension "gmail.com") + password gmail
(If the wifi is off - back to the office with the small house at the top right of the screen. Go to Settings / WiFi / and select your WiFi network and enter the WEP key if your network it is protected. Once connected, return to the office and launch GMAIL)
Your Google account is activated
• SORFT RESET (paperclip in the small hole beside the plug in iPod) - the tablet reboots by itself
You often closing the message framework, but it's not important, go further by clicking on "force quit"
You can change synchronization settings (menu button) and also in the google accounts settings (phone settings: Account and synchonisation)
Have fun with this ROM !!!
If somebody wants to find the way of xternal miniSD or USB flashing it would be great !!
Thanks for the guide, very useful.
What type of problems are you having getting Market working? Does logcat show anything?
I have also had some issues to get it to run properly, as well as getting the Contact/Calendar sync running. Will try flashing your ROM.
http://www.shenit.com/utopia-apad-imx515-8-inch-android-2-2-tablet-freescale-arm-cortex-a8.html
Is that this device that you are operate with ?
I find that, the internal storage of /data really small, event Froyo 2.2 has Apps2SD, still not enough to me to install more apps, but given large 4G SD internal are there, just not making use if it.
Any easy script to relink them so can expand /data ?
thanks
James
Hello
Yes this is the tablet i'm working on
You can change memory allocation puting your system SD card in a miniSD card reader and changing partitions allocations with windows XP system tool (the one you use to change your HDD partitions allocations)
But now you can find a flashing external tool on a sd card sold by "androidtouchpc" website - You don't need my ROM anymore
Best regards
I notice that, during the boot of apad 2.2;
I push middle button + right side of button + power on.
I am getting a text mode selection menu, it has 5~6 selection.
-. reboot system now
-. update update.zip
-. update /system
-. update nandroid
-. update boot.img
-. wipe data
-. wipe cache partition
something like that.... since I am in the office, I need check it again from home to confirm.
In this case, will it be easlier doing update in this way ?
thanks
James

I am curious...
What's the point of opening the Ipad? you did'nt include in your instructions how to flash the ROM
The flashing tool from Androidtouchpc is already available on Slatedroid in the Cortex A8 forum.
It will not work with your download ROM as yours is a disc image and the flashing tool works via an update image.
If you would like PM me and I will try and help you.

Everything is explained in the PDF tutorial, You need to open the tablet to extract the SD system card (not the external SD card, but another SD card, on the motherboard)
Flashing tutorial is explained on page 4 to page 6 with screenshoots
HAVE FUN with this totally FREE OF CHARGES flashing process (it's just a little more difficult than other PAY methods)

To : Jefflyonfr,
you USB tool not able to resize from image to a larger SD card, 8 or 16GB. Do you know any tool can resize Android partition ?
Shaking problem solution is available here , on slatedroid forum in english :
slatedroid.com/index.php?topic=12192.msg99436;topicseen#msg99436
The post explaines something like that :
"The problem (for me anyway) is a that touchscreen plate is being squashed or deformed by cheap ass top cover. It is causing lots of junk touches be generated when you press it because of the warps in the plastic. That is why it works so much better when the cover is off. Its a noisy touchscreen but you can get it back down to "acceptable" levels for the touch driver's sample averaging algorithm to handle.
This is nothing to do with EMI or any fancy electrical stuff.. just crap design and workmanship quality.
This is a (and I mean relatively.. ) easy fix by adding a shim under the edges of touchscreen so there is little or no pressure on the screen itself and/or shaving off some plastic off the stand where the LCD screen sits. You need to make sure that the touch screen is not warped or twisted in any way. If you have ever tried to mod an EEEPC netbook with a third party touch screen, then you would know what I mean. mmm.. I'm guess not many of you guys here have. "
or here, on Apad-France forum in french :

Good luck !
Androidtouchpc.com released SL-A8, HEROTAB dual speaker firmwares last night
Androidtouchpc.com has came through once again for all those with the Touch8 Max or the SL-A8 (Utopia model) or the dual speaker Herotab. We are finishing up another clone model and that will be released shortly as well, but if you have either of the 2 models mentioned, visit us on the web and support our efforts. We have put in a lot of time with this release and appreciate all the support. We now have a full Android Market, we have tested the other methods out there, but this is the only true 100% market. We also addressed the G-sensor for the models mentioned. If your model was not mentioned, be patient as we will have those releases shortly. Once again thanks for the support as we will have more to come.....
Hi there jefflyonfr,I have one of that Cortex A8 Tablet with badly shaking screen
the method given is very interesting and I will try to do it,but first
How do I open the back cover of the unit?? (no screws)
Can you give a step by step instructions
What type of material you use for the "shim"
Have been to slatedroid web site but could not understand the instructions
This is my first Android Tablet also first time O/S user so please bear with me
tks

Please choose one of the following 2 methods!
USB Control Script (1st method):
DEBIAN_CONTROL - see bottom of post for script
MicroSD Control Script (2nd method):
DEBIAN_CONTROL_SD - see bottom of post for script
You will need this image unless you plan to put your own together.
Debian Squeeze Image:
http://www.multiupload.com/C9RDP4ODZX
The image can be flashed to your usb drive or sd/microsd card with dd on your fullsize computer. Please be aware that I have not tested running from a fullsize SD card.
dd if=~/nameofimage.img of=/dev/nameofdevice
Operation
1.Run the control script to start the chroot. You can run console commands here. The screen command is useful here also.
2.Run ./vnc to start the vnc server which itself starts xorg and the window manager. The script is not totally failure proof.
3.Login with your vnc client. I use Android vnc viewer. Password is testing.
http://code.google.com/p/android-vnc-viewer/
Window Managers
lxde
icewm
xfce
check /.vnc/ for the xstartup scripts. just rename the one for the window manager you want to xstartup and reboot your chroot.
BUG:
chroot will not cleanly unmount
SOLUTION:
keep chroot running in the background - it should only take up memory not cpu

FAQ POST:
Does Flash work?
I am not holding out much hope for flash on ARMv6. It seems like a long complicating debugging process for what is in the end slow and buggy results.
The browser is slow?
Right now, it seems that javascript performance on the stock browser is much worse than I expected. For now, try turning off javascript and images if you use the stock browser.
Stock ROM?
The link for the device on Craig's website is:
http://www.craigelectronics.com/site/pdetails.php?id=314
You can download the completely stock ROM from here.
ADB?
I tried ADB with a male to male USB that I had laying around with no success with a GNU/Linux PC and a different Windows PC. All 3 USB ports were tested. But you can connect with adb connect ipofdevice over your LAN if you see what address your router is giving the device. Or of course you could set a static IP.
Minimize application?
You can return to the home screen at any time by pushing fn+home.
Sources for the binaries you have added?
Try the sources link on the first post. The zirco apk is unchanged and their website is here: http://code.google.com/p/zirco-browser/ . The Gapps are straight from my VM LG Optimus V.
Mount an ext2/3 formatted USB drive?
mount -t ext3 /dev/block/sda1 /mountpointofyourchoice
Enter key not working in some terminal applications?
Use Ctrl-m instead.

Just wanted to thank you for taking this project on. This device could be much more and for the price you just can't go wrong. Good luck and I'm off to root.
Is it possible to boot or load a stripped version of windows xp from a thumb drive? and did you try all the usb ports with that cable?
wgallt:
The root situation on the ROM and my current devices in general is a little complicated. For this device in general, it comes ADB rooted out of the box. I have added another su to the rom that will allow console root. Unfortunately, because it is an older version of su, it does not seem to work with Superuser.apk. I am waiting on a response in the Q/A forum on errors I am getting compiling the current version of su. I have been able to compile Superuser.apk successfully but it is not much use without the current version of su. I am of course preferring to include source and source-compiled binaries wherever possible in the ROM.
celltimemb:
Market added.
See above for ADB info.
Regular Windows XP does not run natively on ARM CPUs. From Craig's website it appears that they have an identical model running Windows CE. You should look into any running a lightweight GNU/Linux chroot with QEMU or VMWare and then booting something like Windows 98. I would be amazed to see it, especially with the limited RAM we have available.
I am releasing a new ROM with integrated Google Apps and a open source browser named Zirco which seems to run very well. Compare the stock browser with stock settings to Zirco on forum.xda-developers.com to know what I mean. Be sure to read the README.
This ROM may end up becoming a different series entirely. One with the market and one without.
I have updated the first post with the links and README.
can u add live wallpaper support in a future rom?
If I get around to compiling AOSP that should come with live wallpaper.
I tried copying the live wallpaper apk and what I thought to be their dependencies from my Optimus V. Unfortunately, the switcher crashed and the logcat just said the wallpaper switcher would not start.
lot of apps run real slow and lag i tried some games like that bird game where you flick it to the target, i get like 1 frame every 2-3 seconds for the animation, soo slow, they claim 800 MHZ processor but damn this thing is soooo slow. even the fake chinese android phones the star A5000 runs and performs better than this.
2d games lag real bad so I dont see any 3d gaming at all on this machine. unless some elite hacker and coder can make a fully optimized rom for this thing.
Thanks for reporting your results. I have had mixed successes with games. The drag racing game works decent and another rice-can type racing game worked ok too. But many games instantly crash also. The live wallpaper would probably run slow anyway.
Web browsing
Remote administration
Network administration
Note taking
Light media playback
VOIP
Chat
These are all the uses I can think of it for the moment. It gives me an idea to include a note taking application at some point.
the new browser force closes on me, and does this thing have flash support, I have a gut feeling this is an x86 formfactor which is why it runs so slow.
Please read the README and in general read the previous posts carefully.
This is definitely not an x86. It if were, it would actually be faster.
One of these pages is the page for the CPU:
http://www.wondermedia.com.tw/en/products/platform/soc/wm8650/index.jsp
http://www.wondermedia.com.tw/en/products/platform/soc/wm8750/index.jsp
Lol on the craig website product page they show windows on it instead of android.
http://www.craigelectronics.com/site/pdetails.php?id=314
This thing can supposedly handle 3d gaming so i cant undertsand why most games including 2d games run so slow.
---------- Post added at 09:29 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:57 PM ----------
Is it possible to put Windows CE 6 on this from the craig CLP280 model?
Merry Christmas!
After a productive night the R3 ROM is out.
The changelog and sofware list highlights:
removed zirco integration
init.rc changes to support zirco
holiday wallpaper
added OPTIONAL on localdisk with:
yaxim jabber client - open source
zirco browser - open source
jota text editor - open source
su - compiled from source
superuser - compiled from source
For security reasons, you should probably choose allow once instead of always for su.
As usual be sure to read the README.
Just got a Craig Netbook. I hate the Android stock install. I found this thread and it seems like the answer I'm looking for. If I understand you correctly, the description you give for the Rom"
"OVERVIEW
This is a modified version of the official firmware. The focus is on removal of bloatware and unneeded proprietary software."
is the first hack? (clp281_firmware2.2_HACK9_R1)
Also, if I do this and screw it up, can I reinstall the original Android from the Craig website?
Thanks.
Yes that is the first release. I would recommend trying the third as it is the latest version as of this post.
Yes you can reinstall the original firmware.
Thanks Jason.
Hey Jason. I just installed it. Had to download a new adobe flash player to watch a youtube video.
When it comes to this operating system I am a total newbie. So, in order to do a "do it yourself" install (since I still can't install some pre installed apps like "Dialer" and other things) are there simple instructions to do a "do it yourself" or do you have to be a techy to do it? I know Windows OS well but Android is so foreign to me. Just had this thing for a few days and I am ready to throw the netbook against the wall and then stomp on it. Your root was my last hope.
Well first off, were you able to actually play flash in the browser? That would be a nice new development. Alternatively, you could try the included Youtube player.
I would be glad to help in any way I can. For a do it yourself ROM, you would just take the factory firmware RAR file and edit it yourself. You would start by unRARing the file with something like WinRAR on Windows. But I would recommend trying GNU/Linux instead if you are at all interested in development. You can use the README file and this thread as a reference along the way.
Why are you interested in installing the dialer anyway? I noticed some phone components are installed but there seems to be no way to access them.
You're a doll Jason. Thanks for your willingness to help.
I didn't know about the Youtube player. Thanks for the tip. On the original install I was able to play flash in "Browser" (at Youtube at least) but not with "Browser" in this install. Although, maybe "Browser" opened "My Browser" in the original install and that's the one that had flash support. (I'm still learning). So since I didn't get around to installing your included browser maybe that's why it wouldn't play. Anyhow, I couldn't install the flash update via the link Youtube provided. The little download arrow on the top left hand of the screen just never went away. I had the unit on for about 3 hours and the arrow remained with no confirmation that the download was complete. I searched the system and the SD card for the download but couldn't find it. This is not the first time I had this problem with downloads so maybe it's something with my particular device. This is actually my third. Last two were defects.
About the Dialer... it was a typo. I meant to say I want to UNINSTALL it from the unit, but Android won't let me. It just seems useless to have this app since I have a netbook and not a phone. Plus, I think it may be eating up my battery usage as it could be the app responsible for the cell standby thing I have in Battery Usage which is using up 80% of my battery. Like I said, I am a newbie to this OS so, I'm looking at things like Dialer, Telophony etc. I may be wrong about this though. It may be some other application seeking Cell Radio signal as reported in Battery Usage.
I just did a side by side comparison of the unzipped install I got from Craigs website (by the way, thanks for that link) and your version to see if I could learn and do my own hack. I did notice a few differences.
Ok first I saw the Optional folder with some apps and Browser fix as you mentioned in the Read me
Then there was the app folder where you removed some apps from the original install and added others. Is it as simple as that? To just delete the apps you don't want from this folder of the original install? Unfortunately I don't see Dialer in that folder. I'd like to get rid of that too. I guess you can't get rid of every app.
Another difference was that I saw "su" in "bin". and I noticed SuperUser.apk in your app folder. Does that app make you the administrator of the device giving you access to system files to delete them if you want to? (I looked it up on WIKI) Cause maybe I can include that in my hack.
Also I see another difference in this folder:
\FirmwareInstall\packages\fs_patch\root_patch\system\lib
In your readme you said these are shared libraries but I don't have a clue what that means. Do I need these files?
Thanks again for taking the time with this. I would love to do my own hack. It would give me great satisfaction after the countless hours of stress trying to do stuff they won't let me do.
All the best,
Angie

Q&A coming soon from cooleagle
Basic noobie questions:
Q1: What is Android? I heard that my phone has this as said by the guy who sold me this phone......
A1: Hello new user, Android is an Operating System (a.k.a OS) for phones, like how Windows is for computers. It is meant to be simple, efficient and customisable.
More can be seen here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_(operating_system)
Q2: What is root? What does it do?
A2: Rooting is the process of attaining superuser (su) access to your phone. It is similiar to the jailbreaking process on Apple phones
Q3: What are the different Android versions available for our phone?
A3: Currently only 2.3.3 to 2.3.6. Don't worry, Cyanogenmod 7 will have 2.3.7
Q4: I've heard all this commotion about "stock" firmwares. What are they?
A4: Okay, stock firmwares are update files from Samsung which are available for download. This stock firmware may also stand for factory firmware (if you didn't update)
Q5: What's build.prop? What are some of the build.prop tweaks and meanings?
A5: Build.prop is a file that defines the build properties of the build and phone. It is a necessary part of the phone and if it's missing, the phone may not be able to boot.
Here are some build.prop tweaks:
pm.sleep_mode=(0 or 1)
Enables the phone's sleep mode.
0 to disable, 1 to enable.
ro.ril.disable.power.collapse=(0 or 1)
Disables the network power collapse, allowing the phone to sleep better.
0 to disable, 1 to enable tweak.
dalvik.vm.heapsize=(amount in mb, e.g 48m)
Defines the Dalvik Virtual Machine Heapsize for games to run better.
ro.sf.lcd_density=(0-999, Galaxy R default is 240)
Defines the LCD density (in dpi) for your device. It's recommended not to change your density for Samsung phones as they will cause problems with your phone's Dialer service.
wifi.suppliant_scan_interval=(time in seconds, e.g. 60)
Defines the time taken to scan for new WiFi networks if no open networks are found. Setting the option higher may save more battery as it scans lesser.
persist.sys.camera-mute=(0 or 1)
Turns off the camera shutter sound (Be careful with this, it may be illegal in yoir region!)
You can also try this suggestion by pudup:
pudup said:
To disable the camera sound, there's a few things you can do.
1. This one is kinda annoying but if the sound annoys you more, you could just put your phone on silent or hold the volume down button until the volume is off. The camera shutter sound shouldn't be heard.
2. Download an alternate camera application. Eg. LGCamera.
3. Wait for the CyanogenMod 7 rom. That has the option to disable the sound in it's settings.
Click to collapse
0 to turn sounds, 1 to turn off sounds.
video.accelerate.hw=(0 or 1)
Enables hardware decoding of videos. Only for video formats natively supported by phone.
0 to disable, 1 to enable.
ro.ril.hsxpa=(0, 1, 2 or 3, default is 1)
Determines the speed of your HSUPA.
0 = HSUPA disabled (very slow upload)
1 = Stock HSUPA enabled and capped (slow upload)
2 = HSUPA enabled but capped (good upload)
3 = HSUPA enabled and uncapped (best upload)
Q6: Does this phone support overclocking? I feel that I'm not getting the most out of this phone :/
A6: Yes this phone does support overclocking. The kernel by ardatdat should be in the Development section. It even supports undervolting to save battery!
Q7: Why is there a yellow triangle below "Samsung Galaxy R GT-i9103" on boot?
A7: That's because you probably flashed a non-stock kernel through Odin3. Try reflashing a stock ROM and use CWM to flash the phone next time.....
cooleagle and I will add more info to come
Guides:
Guide 1: How to make use of ADB (Android Debug Bridge) for debugging and testing
By now, you all should've known that Android makes mistakes. Actually, not just Android. EVERYONE makes mistakes. Well, for this case it's something going wrong with a game, or just something wrong with a ROM.
The developers @ Google were smart enough to make this logging binary called
Code:
logcat
and it logs everything going on inside Android, from bootup, to dexopt, basic processes and even to shutting down!
There are 2 ways of accessing Android's logcat:
WAY #1: Using Terminal Emulator
Requirements:
A working phone that boots
Rooted with Superuser
Advantages:
It allows debugging without a computer, unlike the 2nd way.
Terminal Emulator is easily downloadable from Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...251bGwsMSwyLDEsImphY2twYWwuYW5kcm9pZHRlcm0iXQ..
Disadvantages:
It's harder to debug using the phone, especially if it is stuck at the bootanimation or splash screen.
Root is needed otherwise you will get
Code:
logcat: permission denied
in the terminal
Steps:
Download Terminal Emulator from Google Play or the link above
Once you've entered it, type in
Code:
su
using the virtual keyboard
Allow it in the Superuser prompt
Then go ahead and type
Code:
logcat
, you will see a bunch of crazy things.
If you want to save a log, do:
Code:
logcat > /mnt/sdcard/logcat.txt
WAY #2: Using Windows/Ubuntu for logcat using the Android SDK (Software Development Kit)
Requirements:
A computer running Windows/Linux or other distros
The Android SDK must be installed: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
Android USB cable (for connecting the phone to the computer)
An Internet connection
Advantages:
Allows debugging using the computer for more accurate findings
Allows logging much better than the method in Terminal Emulator
Ubuntu allows live copy/paste in its Terminal so there is no need to save a log.txt file
Disadvantages:
It uses the Internet to download the required packages
You need a USB cable to connect the phone
If the USB cable/port is malfunctioning logcat will not work
This is more complex than the phone method as it requires you to set a path in Windows's environment and in Ubuntu's .bashrc if you want to be able to use it in the Terminal/Command Prompt at any time.
Steps for Windows:
Launch the Android SDK Manager in
Code:
32-bit Windows:
C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\SDK Manager.exe
64-bit Windows:
C:\Program Files(x86\Android\android-sdk\SDK Manager.exe
Wait for it to finishing loading all the repositories
Install the Android SDK platform-tools and let it finish its install
You have now installed the Android SDK's Platform Tools, which is in
Code:
C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools
and it contains the Android Debug Bridge (adb.exe), which fits this description:
The adb tool has moved to platform-tools.
If you don't see this directory in your SDK, launch the SDK (execute the android tool) and install "Android SDK Platform-tools"
Please also update your PATH environment variable to include the platform-tools/ directory, so you can execute adb from any location.
Click to collapse
To test whether adb will work, run Command Prompt and go to the folder described above , respective for 32 and 64-bit.
Run:
Code:
adb logcat
and if it works, the same crazy code will be there

Q. My device is DEAD & shows APX mode driver required on connecting to my PC! What to do?
You are lucky! Here’s a solution to it. Head to => LINK
Q. My device is not being detected on being connected to my PC but I can charge it via the wall / normal charger ! What to do?
First of all check if you have the latest Samsung Kies software installed as it also installs the latest Samsung USB drivers along with it which are required to connect your device to the PC. If they are installed & still your PC doesn't detect the device then you probably have corrupted drivers. To resolve this follow these steps: Uninstall Samsung Kies / Samsung USB drivers currently installed => Restart your PC => Reinstall Samsung Kies / Samsung USB drivers.
Q. I can't charge my device & my device is not being detected after connecting to my PC & Odin is not detecting my device ! What to do?
(The solution is valid only if you are experiencing all of the above conditions simultaneously)
Checkout this thread which could help you: => [Partial Fix] Galaxy R not getting detected on PC nor charging via a charger.
Q. I didn't backup my /efs folder and my IMEI is messed up ! Is there any way I could recover my IMEI number ?
There is a GUIDE to recover your IMEI for Samsung Galaxy S2, as being from the same manufacturer there is a chance that it may work but there is not guarantee that it'll work, you are going to use it completely at your own risk (it may hard brick your handset). I am not aware if any member was able to recover Galaxy R's IMEI using this method.
So if you willing to take the risk then Head To => Thread & do tell us if were successful in recovering your IMEI by following a particular procedure.
Q. Which Custom ROMs are available for Galaxy R?
Infected ROM v2[2.3.6][ZSLE5]
TitaniumS ROM v2.1[2.3.6]
TheFrankenstein MOD^1.1[2.3.6][ZCLA]

GALAXY R KNOWN BUGS & SOLUTIONS:
3G / 2G Mobile Data count applications don't function correctly.
Can be solved by using a custom kernel which has this bug fixed.
Date & Time of the handset changes randomly even when it's set to update automatically according to the network.
Go to Settings => Date & Time => Uncheck & then Recheck 'Automatic' to re-sync with your carrier's / service provider's time & date. No known solution which permanently resolves the issue.
The person at the other end can't hear you at all / Headset Jack bug
Sometimes after unplugging your headset you experience problems while making a call, usually a reboot solves the problem but sometimes it doesn't. It can be identified by the following symptoms: When you're making a call, the person at the other end can't hear your voice but you can hear them clearly / you pick up the call then you can't hear any voice & the person can't hear you either.
It's most probably a software bug as the handset thinks the headset is still attached to the handset & routes the call as if it were being made when a headset would have been connected. But in some cases it could also be due to a hardware problem i.e a faulty 3.5mm headset jack.
To confirm if this is the problem you are facing:
- Plug in Samsung's headset & make a call to check if you can communicate / talk with the person at the other end normally & without any problem.
- If you can talk normally then it's confirmed that it's due to a software bug if not then it could be due faulty 3.5 mm jack.
To resolve it:
- Update your firmware to the latest version available even though it may not be for your region as it could have possible fixes. i.e (ZSLE5 / ZSLE6 / Latest firmware of any region)
- Plug in & out the headset a couple of times while playing music till it gets resolved i.e when the firmware understands that the headset has been removed & then it'll work normally.
- You can also take it to a service center where they could replace the headphone jack & may also reflash the stock firmware which should resolve the problem if it's due to a faulty 3.5mm headset jack.

Thanks I'll update it in the FAQ but it'll be only Titanium specific.
But if there's a universal method for all the ROMs and even on rooted stock it would be more helpful.
Capturing screen shot.
Hi,
We can capture the screen by pressing power and home button at a time, can you please add this.

Possible reasons
1) Your camera shutter sound is silent
2) There's a setting which allows silencing of camera shutter
3) Build.prop tweak

Hey man can we tweak build.prop to make the camera shutter sound permanently silent even on stock rooted handsets?
If yes then can you include how to do the same in your first post ?

[WIP] 100% Native Android 6.0 TMO ROM

Greetings,
I am currently working on a 100% Android Marshmallow v6.0.1 variant for the Samsung On5 SM-G550T/1 (T-Mobile).
THIS IS NOT A THREAD ON HOW TO ROOT YOUR PHONE
This thread assumes you have already rooted and installed TWRP on your phone and have basic understanding on to backup and recover your phone.
If you need that sort of help, please see my other thread:
https://goo.gl/jWNVNX
Reasons for Project:
I started this project for two reasons:
- Frustration for the lack of support for an otherwise great phone.
- Stumbling across the Samsung Factory Test Rom doing research for other projects.
This ROM has a a 100% Native Driver Set for Android v6.0.1 on the SM-G550T/1. The driver set is identical for the TMO or MetroPCS variants, but the EFS folder will remain different for each.
I'm going to outright confess that I am not a programmer and this is truthfully the first ROM I am trying to develop on my own. I'm a Project Manager and Software Designer by trade, but I rarely get this deep into ROM developments. I figured it was a good project to take on to learn the nitty griddy of what a truly pure Android Experience looks like. That being said, I'd greatly appreciate any help anyone can contribute and will make all my work freely available to anyone wanting to help provided that everyone participating goes into it with good faith that they have no intent on making substantial gains from this project.
Usage of these ROMs/Files/Programs are subject to the following licenses:
- Google's Android Open Source Project Licnese (AOSP):
https://source.android.com/setup/start/licenses
- Google's Individual Contributor License Agreement:
https://cla.developers.google.com/about/google-individual
- Apache Software License, Version 2.0
http://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0
- Samsung Open Source Release Center (OSRC) License:
http://opensource.samsung.com/reception/
That being said, I believe this remains a good enough device, IMHO, to transition people into Android or to provide to people not requiring a fully featured phone.
KNOX Status:
The Factory Test ROM is mostly clean having all the drivers intact and lacks most Samsung Bloatware "tampering". It *DOES* have some preliminary containers for KNOX installed, but none of it is active and takes up less then 1 MB of total space after cleaning passes to remove as many traces as could be removed without breaking things. It is currently being "managed" by an init.d script that generates the folders. I haven't been able to track down yet.
Known Issues:
- 100% Pure Android Menus.
- Rooted/Super User.
- Sound, Camera, GPS, TMO Modem, Wifi, Bluetooth 100% working.
- 100% Native Tethering.
- Adblocker pre-installed (for both Apps and Websites).
- The smallest amount of KNOX installations outside of Lineage. >1mb of KNOX is present with the only items being present are installer containers.
- I'm trying to track down Init.d files that loads with Android and automatically disables/flushes WIFI.
- By default, the power button is set a 100ms push time to turn off (not show power menu). I'm trying to figure out a work around for this.
- I'm trying to find a compatible Contacts Storage file.
- There is no shutdown menu.
Please note that any released versions of this ROM will have makeshift ways to get around these issues.
Downloads:
Please see the second post in this thread.
How to Install:
#01.) Backup your device.
#02.) Download the zip file for the TWRP backup.
#03.) Unzip the TWRP backup.
#04.) Load the downloaded restore into your TWRP Backup Directory.
#05.) Boot into TWRP Recovery.
#06.) Restore the ROM copied into your TWRP Backup Directory.
#07.) Reboot.
Note: No personal data has been configured.

Things I Could Use Help On:
- A very good way to figure out what Init.d files are doing what without reading through them.
- A good way to change the PIT so we can move 2 gig from the System Rom into the User Rom space.
- Easy methods for changing key button presses.
- A shutdown menu setup.
- A way to make this into an installer.
Note that all those things I'm working on ALREADY, but suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone offers.
Donations Welcomed:
Dev elopement of this ROM is timely, I appreciate any contributions you wish to provide.

i would love to test this rom
Its been taking a little longer then I expected to get it working correctly --- I've been having trouble tracking down some bugs, but with a little luck, I'll post the Google variant tomorrow.
Here is a "working" version to look at:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=1395089523397901430
It's a restore for TWRP (not an install).
It has all the aforementioned bugs, but is pretty clean only with a few basic utilities installed on it.
I'm trying to track down a number of things:
How to change the Power Button function:
In my most current build, I have made the power button simply put the device to sleep with a long hold of the home button bringing up the power menu. I can't for the life of me figure out where the power button menu lives at or how to define it.
Normally, you'd go edit /system/usr/keylayout/Generic.kl, however, editing it button 116 (the power button) for "Power" only makes it turn off. I can remap it easily as sleep. I compared several other ROMs who use the exact same parameter.
My current version, I just use an app to remap several of those functions; but I don't feel like that's a "release worthy" fix.
Factory Mode:
I can't figure out how to get this version of the ROM to get out of factory mode. The only real problem this causes is, on bootup, it will display a message saying as such and then disable WIFI and turn off the sound. Both, of which, can be immediately be turned back on. It also disables power saver modes.
At first, I thought this was an Init.d file, but after doing some digging I determined this has to the /efs/factoryapp/factorymode file. I may need to swap elements from another EFS to get this fixed.
Contacts Storage:
This is another one I can't seem to track down, but I have a working idea how to fix it. At current, anything that uses Contact Storage won't work. I wonder if the contact storage I have on the system is simply incompatible for some reason. I'm going to try to pull over those system apps from another working rom.
Storage
I've mapped out all the partitions but am having trouble figuring out how to actually change the partitions. There is a whole 2 GB being wasted on the system partition. I'm actually very surprised that no one has ever released a rom with this fixed.
I've tried using parted, but my ADB Install is messed up something major and I cant track down that problem. Reinstalled ADB hasn't fixed it. Its largely a PC problem on my end; a problem I'm dragging my feat going and trying to fix. This is an issue I REALLY wish I could use PC tools for :-\. I've done these changes a thousand times on Windows based machines, but never on a Linux based OS.
Now that I think about it, maybe I should try doing this from the terminal prompt in TWRP. I just wish the keyboard in TWRP didn't suck :-\.
Other Thoughts:
Beyond those very vexing bugs, I have to honestly say that I feel like this experience on this rom is vastly superior to that of the stock Samsung Experience. Sure, these issues are vexing, but I'm also seeing much less system overhead (CPU usage, RAM usage) with this Rom then anything else outside of Lineage.
Update
Here's an update for everyone who might be interested:
The last couple of week's I spent an ENORMOUS amount of time trying to track down as much as I can to get this ROM to work as intended.
For those interested, I've developed a completely new spreadsheet describing everything that's bloatware versus needed items:
https://goo.gl/emTvgX
This spreadsheet will probably be handy for EVERYONE working on Samsung related devices. When its a little more clean, I'll throw it some place better; but since this is specific towards this device, I'll keep it here for now.
It describes everything in /system/app/ and /system/priv-app/ in Samsung's default install and which of those items are actually needed for a 100% clean Android Experience.
I've also rolled through the architecture and have cleaned a lot of "junk" out of the system. Overall, I've pulled it the system from around 1.3 gb installed all the way down to about 800 mb and still feel confident I can trim more out of it.
I've also made it a point to install as much updated system apps as possible. Its been a game of juggling Google, Samsung and other ROM apps to find what works. In general, there are only one major programs left that are Samsung based in any way and that's the Samsung Phone Service app; which seems like its required to interface with the specific hardware on the phone. I've tracked down a number of native Google teleservice.apk-s and none have worked to date.
I am, sadly, still having the aforementioned problems:
- Contacts won't sync despite being able to connect to the contact services and seeing what backups are available. Manual restores work and updating contacts TO the server works now.
- The Power Button turns off the device immediately. The problem resides in a configuration somewhere that's telling the "Power" function to not bring up the power menu. The power menu is in the system, but appears to be renamed or something. I'm having trouble tracking this down. For documentation sake, in theory you should be able to just go to /system/usr/keylayout/General.kl and edit button 116, but that doesn't work.
- The phone is still locked into "Factory Mode". Various documentation says that if you go to /efs/FactoryData/factorymode and edit the contents to "ON", it should resolve this issue, but it doesn't. I feel that the problem resides in the CSC folder and EFS folder, but I haven't gotten around to testing yet. I suspect if you swap the CSC and EFS folders out and set all the correct permissions it might fix that. As it stands now, however, its only a minor inconvenience.
Overall, there's a lot more junk to sift through on the last two problems. The first problem I am kind of stumped on.
If you want to download the ROM and look at it or run it, you can follow the below link. It's currently setup with my "trouble shooting environment" making key places to tinker with easily accessible.

Im very grateful for this site where we can come and learn from one another. I just wanted to say thanks for taking time to work on this device and then sharing your findings. I've been using my on5 for 2 months now after other device died. I'm in the process of moving now but once I'm done with that I'm going to scope out this bad boy and see if I can figure out a few things. Appreciate you sharing your information with us all. Cheers.

Thanks. I'm glad to see there's some interest here. IMHO, with the right setup, this little phone is actually a very nice device today.
I actually took a lot of what I learned from hack this ROM apart and applied it to Super Starz to get it running a lot cleaning as my daily runner until/if I get these few bugs figured out.
Personally, I think the most valuable thing I've been learning is just how bloated Samsung Devices truly are out of the box.
I'm going to go ahead and dump my progress log here too so you guys can see what I've been toiling with in hopes someone has some specific feedback on issues and if I am in the right place or not:
https://goo.gl/CEGCx9
As of the writing of this post, I'm virtually confident any problems I am experiencing has nothing to do with /efs/ or /system/csc/.
I've found some inconsistencies in /etc/ and in a few other directories in /system/.
I still wonder if there isn't a init.d file I haven't tracked down yet, but personally I find folder compares faster and easier to try to normalize then I do init.d files.
When it comes to folder compares, I can do a fast reboot and see if things break. When it comes to lines of code, I have to do a bulk of edits, reboot and hope for the best.
Just as an FYI, I plan on completely rewriting the OP when things are at a place where things work.
For anyone following the thread, the Downloads Section has been updated.
This seems really interesting ? I've been trying to find a good ROM for a while with little success, so hopefully this might be the one. I just have one question: what are the differences between the Google and Diagnostics versions of this ROM?
