Sim unlock on 2.2 - Captivate General

Is there an easy/noob way to unlock a 2.2 Captivate? I might sell it in a couple of days to get a Nexus S but need to unlock it because my friend is with other company. There's a guide to unlock it using ADB but I'm not good on it.
Thanks

Short answer is no - or most likely no. 2.2 phones usually have an encrypted nv_data.bin and there is a lot more work to be done. There is a thread in the dev section on how to do it, but it requires ADB at a minimum -
Also, if you unlock a Captivate for T-Mo - no 3G.

Unlock code from AT&T

I called AT&T today to ask for the unlock code as I'm gonna go back home next week. I've been using the Cappy with AT&T since August 31, so it is more than 90 days. As experienced with T-mobile before, I was able to get the unlock code after using T-mobile service for more than 90 days. But that is not the case with AT&T and Captivate. The guy over there told me that there is an exclusive agreement or something like that which make the Captivate not eligible to be unlocked. That really upsets me. Well, I know that without AT&T technical we still can unlock the phone to use with another carrier (Using the unlock tool) but AT&T pisses me off!!!
Btw, I have a little concern (that is the reason why I called AT&T). Is there any difference between using the unlock tool and getting the code from AT&T for unlock? Also, do we need to root before using the unlock tool?
Thanks
Uhhh, just call back and get a different rep. I am almost certain you can get an unlock code. Tell them you are going over-seas for business, or visiting family etc. I think by law they have to give you the code (if you meets certain restrictions)
Just use this app to get the unlock code, and forget AT&T.
http://www.appbrain.com/app/samsung-galaxy-s-unlock-tool/com.clarkehackworth.SamsungGalaxySUnlock
There is no difference in the methods, the code the app gets is the same as the one in AT&T's database.
Thanks guy. I did call 2 reps today and got the same answer. Stupid. Regarding the Galaxy S unlock took, I believe that I need to choose No-Root Gen Codes button if my phone hasn't been rooted yet. But why do we need Root Gen Codes while we can unlock w/o root?

Unlocking the HTC Inspire 4G? Methods

Hi XDA - Just joined the "Android Team" from being a long-time iPhone user. These forums seem much more intuitive. The one thing I can't seem to locate is SIM-Unlock services\assistance.
I just bought a HTC Inspire 4G, and normally I just call AT&T and they give me the code to punch in and it unlocks it when I use overseas with foreign SIM. This time they said since it's an ATT "exclusive" phone, the unlock codes won't be available for customer care to provide until the 6 month window has been reached, which will be August.
What alternate methods are available to use for unlocking? I really don't want to modify the software, so how does unlocking on android work? Are there websites that can provide unlock codes? If I take it to a cell kiosk at the mall can they do it? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
Right now, the only way to unlock the Inspire is to flash to an older radio ROM (it had an exploit), unlock it, and restore back to the stock firmware

Yeah I don't want to mod the software. I'll pay the $13 for an unlock code :-(
Did the unlock work
Just wondering if the company you used unlocked the phone. About to get mine and use it overseas

Well if it makes you feel any better, after you flash back to the stock ROM, the only difference will be that your phone is unlocked
flashing back the stock rom will keep the phone within guarantee right?

Yeah I get it I'm just a week old in the Android world and not super comfortable to mod yet. I know just about everything related to jail breaking iPhone I just wish there was an easy step by step guide to mod and unlock my inspire 4G :-(
Don't worry, there will be soon enough, it's just a brand new phone.
FYI All - Just got an email from http://www.HTCimeiUnlock.com/ stating that unlock codes are now available. Please note I'm not afiliated with this site in any way, just sharing the info. I just bought 2 codes for $25 each for my 2 Inspire 4Gs and they worked, yay sooooooo excited now!
EDIT: YEAH I know this is pricey for an unlock code, but they're the first I found with them, so like any business, the first to the market can charge what they want until everyone else catches up... good way to add $100 in resale value to my phones for $25 tho, hehe.
Thanks for the replies
Bought the unlock code $25 from them yesterday, and voila! I am using my Tmobile on this phone now. Thanks for the info.

I was very impressed with their service.. I bought 2 for the 2 phones I have, and they were the only legit unlocker I could find. I was at the end of my rope too, I'd paid for 4 others to get the unlock code and they'd all email me after 24 hours saying code not available.
Glad you got it unlocked too, enjoy!
Yes, they were great.very quick to response with answers to all the questions I had. I was at the point of flashing my new phone with limited knowledge of doing that. A previous unlocker failed to find the code for 2 days.
Just a quick question about the unlocking. When you unlock it and use it on T-Mobile you are not getting their 3G service right? I haven't looked at the bands available in this phone but I would be surprised if this supports both the T-Mobile and AT&T bands.

Yeah, you're correct, 2G on T-Mobile, 3.5G ("4G") on AT&T. I unlocked because I go global alot and need to be able to pop in foreign sims.

Will these instructions work without an ATT SIM card to begin with?
EDIT: I got an answer from attn1. It will work without a sim card. Just don't insert one from another provider until the very last step.
Does this get you the s off or just unlock it for different sim.
Nevermind, wasnt thinking. Root and unlocked are totally different

Want to share my own experience and give heads up to an independent unlocker.
I have the knowledge to go for the unlock method presented here by the OP, but I lack the time to do it and I can probably make the money to unlock 10 phones in the same amount of time I will use to go through this process, so I have decided to unlock the phone through a simple purchase code method and will root the phone later when an easier process comes out. I would be also happy to pay for that since I don't really have time to go through the flash-root process.
So when I first got my HTC Inspire, I went right away to ebay in search of the unlocker I used last time to unlock an HTC Aria. Was surprised to not found the unlocker I was looking for and worst, despite he had over +63k positive reviews, he was somehow been removed from ebay and other unlockers claim he was out of ebay due to fraud. hu?
Anyway, I had his email so I contacted him over email and asked regarding the subject, he said somebody (other unlockers it seems) were accusing him on fraud thus he was removed from ebay.
I got a little reluctant to buy again from him after "hearing the news" but after exchanging few emails with the guy, I told my self "is just 20 bucks for the code, worst can happen if he's not right is I'll loose the money and he'll of course will get the worst advertising"... so, I added him to my gmail chat to have a close talk and after paying him with my google checkout account, 10 minutes later he sent the code over chat and email, which -needless to say- unlocked the phone right away!!!
You can search through my posts on xda-forum and you'll see I recommended this unlocker before, [email protected], he is the **** and offered the least expensive unlock code for the Inspire, only 20 dollars, you can pay with PayPal or Google checkout. There is the word outside that he is not right and committed fraud, even this other jealous unlocker post his email address on a scammer's site and I can assure all this is not true at all.
I send others relatives with this guy and all of them got their unlock codes in shape and time. This is presently the least expensive unlocker out there for the Inspire codes.
He also has a web site http://blowfishunlocks.com, you'll need to register to order the code, but I would recommend do the email thing.
This guy is real, he has a real address and I recommend him 100% for unlocking the Inspire or any other phone.
On a side note, AT&T willnot realease the unlock code after 6 months (new policy) and this is why I had to buy the code. I use this phone in mexican's Telcel GSM and works as charm and I had to manually configure the APN for the 3g.
hey tongas i just bought the phone on ebay and i will be adding that blowfish guy over my gmail chat because i will also need an unlock code. anyways i live in mexicali baja california mexico .. were did u get the info for the APN for 3G on telcel. im going to activate it here too lol .. so some info would be really helpfull thanks .. the buyer said hes sending my phone during this week so hopefully ill get it by tuesday next week.
also a general question and its for educational purposes does anyone know if this phone will be capable of runing programs for testing my wifi securety to see if it till cough up my wep key? please let me know if i am breaking any forum rules for making this questions its not my intention to do so. Thanks .
Hey dude, no problem
Use the info on this thread to set the APN manually:

Blowfish dude rocks, I'm at pacific/central Mexico over Telcel and this my second time buying from him, the guy is super cool over chat, tell him you found him through this forum, he was so thankful I posted this for him, the man is straight business and he will have you setup in a bit.
Enjoy your HTC Inspire I'm doing so with mine, this thing is fast and super nice... wish a little bit of more battery life but wth! phone is super cool!
It's cool to know that unlock codes are available for this phone
@bella have you watched r34p3rex's video tut? I followed him to the T and successfully rooted, unlocked, and flashed this puppy It's not too bad I think... Jailbreaking was just wayyyy too easy (at least it was when I had a non-mc 3gs) It was a lot of one click jailbreaking for me. The only time I really had trouble was updating
Back to the point! I'd suggest peeps give ol' r34p3rex's video tut a shot (or a good several viewings) it might seem daunting at first... but follow the instructions and you won't have any issues
When I unlock my phone I feel very accomplished. I added all that resale value just by disabling network locks!

Motorola XT720 Unlock

Hi,
I am really new to android , switch from iphone to Motorola XT720 .
I just bought one today but its unlocked to Videotron in canada to work on Rogers service provider.
My question is :
Is theres a way similar to jailbreak and sim unlock for iphone to unlock my moto phone . or I need unlock code?
I did found online things about superoneclick which gives root access and some other software , some other people said something about loading the phone with a rom , not 100% how this works .
Thanks
no, you are getting those things mixed up
you are trying to SIM unlock, which we have not yet found in this forum
that means you will need an unlock code from Videotron, which i know they will not give you one
all of the above aside
this phone works in 1700+2100, that means it is not really compatible with Rogers, unless you plan to only use Voice calls
Rogers / Fido runs on 850+1900 for 3G
that's assuming you manage to get the unlock code from Videotron

And i did!!
Bt the unlock codes are handset specific... so mine would do you no good....

is cincinnati bell lying?

i sent cbw an email with the intent to obtain the sim unlock code for my milestone, based off a post on their facebook page. here is the email i sent to them:
while perusing your facebook page i find a gentleman named ___ that posted this:
"Does Cincinnati Bell have the unlock code for the Blaze? I may be traveling internationally soon and would like to use other carriers' SIM cards when overseas."
your response was:
"Hi ___- Email us your wireless # and IMEI to [email protected] Thanks!"
i called a few months ago for the EXACT same reason and was denied unlocking my milestone xt720. how can this be rectified? i also travel abroad and would like to have the phone THAT I PAID FOR unlocked as to be able to use other sim cards.
thanks

Thanks for the note. Motorola maintains the unlock profiles for the XT720 Milestone. The Cincinnati Bell Blaze is one of our OEM designs, therefore managed by Cincinnati Bell. I would contact Motorola US with your IMEI to pursue unlocking the device.

ive called motorola and they told me that the CARRIERS are the ones that have the unlock codes. who is lying (my guess - cbw) and how am i supposed to unlock this thing?
I think carriers should have it but I could be wrong. When I wanted to unlock my old phone from Wind (my carrier) I called them up and they gave the code to me.
I would try calling up CBW and speaking to a different person. The one who replied to you could just be confused.
The unlock is not part of the firmware, it is held much deeper in the phone. I would tend to believe the carrier and assume that the manufacturer would be able to unlock this phone. I really hope I am wrong though, for your sake.
Hi usually you have to be like 6 months+ and some time up 9 months into contract.
Call 611 and tell them you will be the country don't deal service tech they don't no much of anything.

One of the things that Dexter does to his ROMs that I haven't figured out yet is that he moves /system/etc/motorola/bp_nvm_default/sim_lock_init to /system/etc/motorola/sim_lock_init. I do know that /system/etc/motorola/bp_nvm_default is part of the baseband system and I also know that not all of Motorola's XT720 ROMs have sim_lock_init (in fact of the 9 XT720 sbf's I've collected only CBW's sbf has it, both Korean ROMs both have it). I don't have a non-CBW SIM, so I don't know if that does anything and Google hasn't really been much help to me on that. If you have a non-CBW SIM, maybe you can try using one of Dexter's ROMs and see if it is actually SIM locked or not. I honestly have no idea, though. I do know that I flashed the UK sbf once and it refused to let me use the phone unless there was a SIM present (but it accepted my CBW SIM--I have two XT720 now but only one sim). The CBW and Korean sbfs on the other hand let you use the phone without a SIM. Maybe that's what that file is about. I'm mostly clueless about the baseband and SIMs. But hey, it has "sim" and "lock" in the filename .
Do you still need an unlock code? I can get you one for this one for $14.99. They do come from Motorola and not Cincinnati Bell and the codes are not cheap like other phones.
Way to dig up a thread from 5 months ago. Not sure I want to send someone $14.99 for an unlock code in Thailand when I can go to corner store and they can unlock it face-to-face. Plus signature favors LG phones.
Seems like a Google search for "Help me unlock my phone" came up with this thread and probably many others to blanket post in them all. Dare I say.......Pimping your services?

No, not at all. Just trying to help a fellow XDA member. I offered the code at my cost with PayPal fee included. At this price I make nothing.
Also, getting your phone unlocked at a local shop is dangerous. Often these shops use special software and hardware clips that unlock your phone by patching the baseband code, which can result in a damaged or bricked device. Also when the phone is unlocked by a firmware patch such as this the phone can no longer get OTA updates as the baseband code will no longer pass a validation check (MD5) during the update process.
Unlocking remotely by IMEI is much safer. Remote unlocking servers, such as the ones we subscribe to, retrieve the unlock codes directly from the manufacturers databases that the carriers use. By entering the unlock code assigned to the phone at the factory at the time of manufacturer is the only safe way to unlock a phone. Once you enter the code the phone is unlocked permanently with no potential for damage. Plus the phone can still get OTA updates as the baseband code remains untouched.
Go ahead. Let some hack at a local shop damage your phone by patching the baseband code. Great idea, not!

How can I sim unlock my HTC One X AT&T

Hello,
I have rooted my device and I have even unlocked the Bootloader, but I still think there is something that I should do and I was looking in this forum but I couldn't find anything.
So my questions are:
1) is there anything I can do to have my sim unlock?
2) if the answer to the first question is "no for now", then if I instal one of the custom roms in the forum, will the sim be unlocked then?
thanks

If you need to get SIM UNLOCK to use the phone with a different carrier you need to get an unlock code.
Unfortunately this isn't free. You can have this done by cellunlocker.net they require to get your IMEI to generate the unlock code for you device.
In about 2 hours from that point on you'll get an EMAIL with the unlock code. This will set you back by 7,99$ USD.
There you go you can now use your phone with any carrier afterward.
Cheers bud.
Sorry about the misplacement of the thread.
I know that I need an unlock code, it's just that I away from USA for couple months and going back so that's why I don't want to spend money on something for only couple months.
I thought that there exist some method in this forum which will allow me and others to have our devices sim unlocked.
It's a shame that I am a programmer but I can't do it myself because I don't know from where to start so I can sim unlock my own device.
If someone is willing to guide me through some hacking tutorials, I will be very happy to learn how to hack myself and I would love to share my hacking work with others but the question is from where should I start.
still looking for a potential help if possible
No problem. The likely hood that you'll find what your looking for are quite slim to none at this present time. Cheers mate.

I unlocked my ATT HTC One X through them.. They are legitimate and the code they provide works .... cost abt 11$... but definitely worth it... they sent me the carrier unlock code in abt an hour...

There is no free method at this time. Some folks are working on it, look for the thread in Development. But at this time, you will need to use a paid service if you want it SIM unlocked.
It only costs $11. What's your alternative, not use your One X for a couple months? Even if you have a backup phone that is SIM unlocked, my guess is that you will end up wishing you had spent the $11 so that you can use your awesome One X!
$7 on Ebay, i got my code in a matter of minutes.

Is this unlock code a permanent same-as-factory-unlock carrier unlock? In other words, flashing some type of radio, rom, boot loader, etc will not re-lock this phone to a carrier?
How do these services and ebay vendors get an unlock code? I'm not looking to do this myself, but I just thought that these phones have unlock codes that are controlled by htc and held in some database. So I'm not sure what these companies are doing.
unlock code bought online = unlock forever even if you factory reset or w/e you kids do with your smartphones these days.
^ What he said, permanent.
Long live the One X
Thanks to everyone.
I will just wait because I am carrying 2 devices with me all the time anyway so it does not effect me at all, I thought there is a free way, plus I am going back to the US in few weeks and I will be using AT&T again.
For me $7 is less than 2 packs of cigarettes, so to me it's like free
Long live the One X
Ya not doing it because you don't want to spend seven dollars is pretty crazy IMO
Even if it wasn't permanent, its not like the unlock code changes if you flash a radio/rom, you'd just have to re enter.
I just want to know how to do for the sake of knowing how to do it... I figure there's several services out there that do it and all the ask for is the carrier and IMEI so there must be fairly easy way to do it...
?
If I've ever had a legit need to sim unlock, such as overseas travel, I simply call my provider and they just tell me the code.
