I picked up a Mytouch 4G today instead of waiting for the Nexus S, one thing is the price i saved over $200 by buying the mytouch compared to the $530 + plus tax of the NS.
One thing that made me go with mytouch was that i've handled one for a few days and i like the browser and the overall speed. The stock rom is good enough for me as it has all the features like flash, tethering and now.
I know i won't have phone jealousy because i've had the vibrant for 1 month and it was great but i like the MT better because of the reasons i've mentioned.
I don't use the FFC or the NFC so i can just wait for the 2.3. Overall the real reason is that no matter what the NS will be overshadowed by the next wave of Dualies so i guess i'd rather save some money for Christmas and have a phone that is almost as good while i guess i'll upgrade to whatever next developer phone will be.
The best thing is i'm already S-OFF and Perm Rooted ready for whatever it comes.
Welcome! Time for some fun...
Welcome to the real Nexus S plastic crap killer party. In the coming weeks you will see waves of Roms from Zinx, EvilD, and Enomther.

Well the NS has some appealing, the curved screen, nfc which is a novelty right now, but the main reason is that at this point in time no phone with 1ghz, 512 ram worth $530 plus tax or shipping. Come is about $150 over the market price, i don't care who sells it.

MyTouch 4G is $479 without contract, G2 is $500 without contract, N1 (if you can still get it) is $530 without contract. And you can get NS for $199 w/contract if you want.
$150 for unlocked phone without contract? You're asking for too much.... may be a Razr

I'm just saying the phone the phone could be $150 less, like $530-$150 so $420 is a more reasonable price. I buy my phones off contract because i have the even more plus plan and i can always leave if i'm not happy, although i've been with them for over 10 years.

Good choice. I am following that same strategy, mt4g until the tegras start rolling out in phones next year. Hands down I have to say though that the glacier has shocked me so many times since I got it. Just so fast, smooth, and solid. The nexus s is a huge disappointment specwise.

Same here. I bought my MyTouch for $350 on ebay. Considering that I was almost going to pay $580 dollars for the Nexus S (after taxes), I feel like I got a good deal and saved a bunch of cash on this phone that is not only comparable, but in some ways better than the Nexus S. I'm happy.
Same boat for me. Had the G2 > MT4G thought about the nexus S but I couldn't get my self to see why pay more for something that doesn't justify the extra $200+. I love the screen but I'll save my money and wait. Can't wait until the new MT4G arrives

The SAMOLED screen is not all that. Had the same screen on my Captivate. Videos looked outstanding but text was very pixelated and photos were over saturated (looked fake). The 4" size was really nice though.
If the Nexus S is similar to Galaxy S phones you'll see them for sale on eBay soon enough

I think with the Samsung Attain coming to AT&T pretty soon, as well as the iPhone 5 dropping in another 3-4 months (as per oft-repeated rumours) , ppl are holding out on buying this gem. I know a few captivate owners who're happy with their phones, and most ppl on iPhone 3g/3gs are waiting for the 5.
For me, the 4.5 inch screen, good battery life and sleekness of the device were an easy sell to ditch my iPhone 4 and get this. But I haven't seen many ppl with the Infuse at work, or when I'm wandering around in the city or on public transportation.
I think this may very well be the best time to get the Infuse. Mine is on its way from AMZ where it's priced the same as the local Costco ($129) which is incidently the lowest I've paid for a phone in years.
I contemplated waiting to see what Jobs have to offer this week at their conference as well as whether ATT will bring in the Infuse older bro. But at what cost and whether it would make a difference in my usage?
Now if only the stars line up in that (a) ATT won't prevent me from grandfathering in my unlimited data plan (esp since I did not upgrade in their store) and (b) the rooted or not Infuse allows me to do what I'm used to doing with my IP4 (tethering, Outlook sync, notes, CNBC streaming quotes, Stanza, A2DP e.g.) I'm good to go.

We have to think about the upgrade plans. I have both the Cappy and the Infuse just because my girlfriend changed her plan I was able to get it. Else, I think I would just wait for the Attain, but who cares, hopefully this time next year, quad core phones come out!.....
But loving every peace of the infuse than cappy. Wayyy better battery life, screen I think is about the same, camera, sleekness, and build quality I think is better than the cappy though...

The screen is certainly not the same as Captivate. The 4.5" screen is by far the best feature of the phone and the main reason I upgraded to it from the Captivate's 4".
I decided against the SGS II on this upgrade because of issues with headphone sound not being that great and a 4.3" screen ( I wanted a big screen upgrade from Captivate 4").
Apparently, Samsung decided to change the sound hardware in the SGS II and a reason why we will not see Voodoo Sound on it. Also, I see no reason for a dual core phone right now (at least for me) as there are no real apps that take advantage of it yet. In addition, Samsung will be releasing SGS III early next year.
Yeah I hear they're selling really well....but I haven't seen one around. The only one I've seen is the one my GF just got. I'm thinking about it myself.

I've just recently moved from AT&T back in August and jumped in on the free online offer for the G2X for both my wife and I. So far both phones have been running perfectly stock without issue. I know a lot of attention is being placed on the new Samsung offering but the pure Android experience is awesome. There is not much if any bloatware to complain about and the phone is very well constructed physically.
With anything in the technology industry this phone will be surpassed in speed but it's still a contender, even against the SGII and some of the newer HTC models. When I switched carriers this was the fastest phone available with the best features. I love T-Mobiles free WiFi calling and the Android unlimited data plan (20 Bucks) which goes along way for military users since I travel a lot.
Give the phone a shot, if not the SGSII is here and the HTC MG4G slide also offers specs near to that of the G2X.

No, it's not worth an upgrade from a mt4g to a g2x. I also came from a mt4g only reason i got the g2x was because i found one on craigslist for a steal and it didn't cost me my upgrade(waiting for the Hercules for that).
I would wait for either the Hercules or HTC Amaze 4g, but if none of those caught your attention... might as well wait for the s4 line of chips and or quad core early next year. The G2x is a beast of a phone, but so is that mt4g you got, it can still hang with most phones out today.

Not that I've heard. I'm waiting until until T-Mobile gets something with a S4 (4th gen Snapdragon) and over 1 GB of RAM. I got the MT4G right after launch and it was worth it then because it was the first phone in the U.S. with a S2 and 768MB of RAM. I'd milk the MT4G a few more months...it's still a fast phone with more than adequate performance.

I would wait a bit, especially with the tegra 3 chip in the horizon
Every time I want a new phone, I flash a new ROM. Best way to get your current phone to act like a new phone. Left MIUI for Febs ICS beta recently. It's so amazing It will save you a lot of money comparatively too.
I have an HTC HD2 (T-Mobile version unlocked, on AT&T) and I am looking at getting a T-Mobile plan. My HD2 had Android 2.3.7 (AmeriCan Android). It runs the SD card, so I can still use WM6.5.
So, when I go to T-Mobile, the free phones they have (at Costco) lists the MT4G, which looks like the best free one.
But, when I compare what Costco / T-Mobile and PhoneScoop.com say are the specs, they don't match.
I'm wondering if going from the HD2 with Android to the MT4G is worth it. I know I can keep the HD2 and if I don't like the TM4G as much I can switch back (or even back and forth), but I was wondering what MT4G users think of their phones.
Also, does anyone change to a newer version of Android before the warranty runs out?
I love my mt4g. no the specs should all be the same. I get over a day running cm7 overclocked to 1.5ghz with normal use. Was going to use the phone as a present to control a Logitech harmony base but. Have decided to wait till HTC makes there next big one not really liking sgs2 after using one.

I will watch out for the LG version to avoid it, but I was looking at T-Mobile from Costco. They have the T-Mobile® myTouch™ 4G Black, and in the pictured you can see "HTC" on the back.
The reason I was looking at this was it is $0.01 from Costco, and it seems to be pretty good compared to my HTC HD2, and I'm running Android, like the mt4g, so I thought that would be a good step.
Thanks!

The development of this ROM is amazing. I got lucky and didn't realize that before I bought the phone, but the MT4G is a fantastic phone for $0.01 on contract.
Either way though, I may suggest a dualcore if it ever goes on a sale. Quite sure there was a time when the SGS2 was like $0.01 during Christmas for T-mobile. Try and look for deals like that.

The SGS2 deal was something like $200 down, with $200 mail in rebate, and $20 per month for 20 months! Not quite the deal I was looking for.
Not sure if I should wait for a better deal toward the end of the month, or take the plunge now!
Anyone know if any T-Mobile deals are coming soon?
You are only going to get a great deal on T-mobile if you aren't a current customer (just my opinion). Otherwise, wait until you are eligible for phone upgrades.
Attention!
In light of all the posts that are deleted and/or closed due to many off-topic posts about what device a person should buy, I have created this official thread.
Although XDA is not a place to extensively talk about what device person should buy, some forums permit it. So to help keep the threads a little cleaner, you may post your questions here.
Granted there are other sites more into device reviews and comparisons, but in the interest of keeping some people happy, and to avoid getting posts deleted, this thread is created for people who have no idea what device to get.
In the end, you should still march your happy self to a shop, and play with the devices that are available. Only then will you be satisfied with your purchase.
Any posts elsewhere asking such questions, that should be in this thread, will still be deleted or closed.
Thanks, and Hope you use this.

I could sell you mine for $150 when I get the Xperia Ion. It's pretty much brand new, since I got a replacement from AT&T because of a defect that was covered by my warranty. I even have a CaseMate hard case, and screen protector.

I just upgraded to the one x about a week ago. Best choice I've made in awhile
HTC one X is an absolute killer. However, there are rumors circling,HTC gonna launch a new beast in Q3.
I want to get Galaxy Nexus
I am tempted to get the unlocked GSM Galaxy Nexus. I wish it had more than 16 GB or be able to have an sd card but I could live with that.
I am on the fence right now, I can upgrade next month and I am just torn as to what phone to get. I bought my inspire off craigslist a few months ago and I love it, so I am thinking of going with the One-X, but I also have heard that the new Nexus phone could be released for all carriers this year. Hearing that, I may have to hold onto the Inspire a while longer.
Since my economics are not that good, i usually get previous generation devices because the price is under the half of the initial cost.
I choose a device that can get the ICS after rooting and has pretty good performance. This is the INSPIRE 4G. Beautiful and capable.
Some guy on AT&T network go to WiMax technology with Evo, and gave the Inspire 4G on ebay because is working with Sim card. He said that he used it only for 5 days on a trip to Europe. Buy now price 269 USD including 8GB memory card, + 9,3 USD for a 16GB memory card, +1,8 for a silicon case.
So with under 300 USD i have a strong device in my pocket which has nothing to be jealous of the new devices with updated ICS.
go with the inspire.

Easy, get or stick with the Inspire 4G
Only drawback is lame battery life but in all honesty I still prefer mine over any newer phone....mine is rooted and allows me to tailor it to my liking.
And yes, I have played with a Galaxy s3 or Iphone 4,4s,5 or note 2....every single one doesn't have the snappiness of my inspire running MIUI
Inspire has the removable battery and memory card......not too common with newer phones.....

I'm sorry, I loved my inspire to death but it simply doesn't hold a candle to the note 2 and s3 in terms of smoothness. The inspire, unfortunately, has been surpassed and is nearly two years old at this point.

Just updated my inspire to 4.2.1 and loving it. Wish I had the cash for the Nexus 4, or even a Galaxy Nexus, though.
The One X has been out for a month already, and since I am buying from a friend, I have to drop $500 off contract for it. Is it worth getting it right now? I am going to get the iPhone 5 anyways, but I am not sure if it is worth getting the One X if a new android phone is around the corner. I have no real NEED for it, but I want to start learning how to develop apps since I know Java and C++. I would love the One X, but is now the right time to buy it? :cyclops:
It's a great phone, you'll love it. Talk your friend down to $450.

If you have the money and desire, I say go for it... What do you mean when you ask if it's the right time to buy it? I don't think that there is a right/wrong time to buy it... If you wait, there will be more development done and the price might be cheaper.... If you get it now, you will own a bleeding edge phone.... It's up to you

I had the international version for a while, and it was truly stellar. Sold that, switched to iPhone, now i want it back. But do you think that if I am spending the money, I should wait a bit and get the Galaxy S3? Or this?
Is it worth waiting around a month if I don't need it really badly? Or should I jump the gun for $450?
There's always a new phone around the corner and the SGS3 vs HOX debate has been discussed ad nauseum. Play with it, and if you like it more than the iphone do it. Or go play with a SGS3 somewhere.
Don't rely on these boards to define your personal opinion for you.
That being said 450 - 500 is pretty good for a very new model phone. You can check the unsubsidized price quite easily online which should inform your asking price once you settle on what you want.
Just wondering - are these phones all for personal use or business? Why are you getting an android phone and an iphone 5? Just an enthusiast?

Enthusiast and because I'm in my high school years so I've started some app development on the iPhone and I want to see what it's like on android too. iPhone 5 just cause I have an upgrade then
If you want to play around just get a galaxy s 2 variant. Save some dough. I'd only spend the money if I were going to keep it at least a year. But then again I wouldn't get the One X because it barely has any storage
I just went from a Samsung Galaxy S II to the HTC One X (AT&T) and I love it. Not only is it quite a bit snappier, the build quality far surpasses the Galaxy S II. The only negative I can note are the non-expandable memory and beats audio does not play nice with my car stereo. I have to set the stereo to "Flat", instead of my custom setting, or there is a really loud whining noise. On headphones though, the audio is great. Overall I feel it is just a better product build quality wise, and that makes a big difference to me.
I paid only $119.88 for mine at Best Buy since they price matched WalMart for me.
Instead of $500 i would get the galaxy nexus unlocked for $399 (plus shipping+tax)
Build quality is a lot better then any galaxy phone. The only down fall to the one x is the small storage but that's why I kept my note. This is def better then any iPhone

The GNex ends up being around $450 shipped. If he can get the HOX for that price it would be downright stupid to get the GNex. It's a decent device, and but it has nothing on the HOX. Its hardware was behind the curve before it even came out.

Its a great phone, I love it. I was having a hard time deciding between the HTC ONE X and the google nexus. I ended up going with the one x. The nexus has a smaller screen and it also has software buttons as opposed to hardware buttoms. Software buttons are nice except that it takes up screen space.
There are other phones now on the market, like the Samsung GSII which has more RAM and may or may not be better than the One X. But I like this phone and I'll stick with it.
Read Anandtech's reviews for the AT&T One X and the AT&T/T-Mobile GS3.
It is really down to what you prioritize.

this is good advice. Get a previous generation android device, running gingerbread like an SGS II or Inspire or something inexpensive on craig's list.
If you fall in love with Android, THEN spend the money on a flagship phone.

Yeah, this I agree with. The GSII is still a solid piece of equipment.

sometimes I wish I still had one to play with, maybe learn some devving myself.
I love my phone.
For me it was between the Galaxy Nexus GSM from the Play store or this, but as soon as I went to the store to try this out I knew I had to get it. I bought the phone for the same reasons as you (to start developing, I'm in high school as well) and I've had good success with it (check out my Evervolv ROM )
I'd say go for this but its really personal opinion.
I love the phone itself, since I had the international version (toooo priceyyy) but I really dont know about buying it second hand and whether if I wait just a month, the price will decrease to liek $350 or some mindblowing new device will come out. But there's always that possibility that I will screw myself over getting it now instead of waiting a month.
Also, do you think that the iPhone 4S is futureproofed to the iPhone 5? Is it going to be a "worth-it" upgrade to go from the 4S to the 5 when it comes out? I know there's not a lot we know for sure about the device, but from what we know so far.
Also, what will retain more value over the long run (7-8 months from now)... the One X or the Galaxy S III?
As a person who has had several androids over a short period of time (galaxy s, thrill, g note) the one x is my favorite. The batterylife and screen alone has madw it my daily driver. So I say go for it.
