What is the best ROM for the Captivate? I am borrowing a friends, and he is running the Cognitive ROM, but it is a little too buggy for my liking.
I want to know from the Captivate users for AT&T what the best ROM is that you guys have found as far as speed, and overall performance.
Are there any ROMs that support OC?
Thanks in advance!!!
perception is great, been running beta 8 for about a week now and it flies. fastest rom iv used yet.
axura..... best rom EVAR!

Go crazy and flash his phone with all of them and you decide, good times...
this question is asked everyday! please try for yourself--i like perception because it has mobileAP and the ability to toggle WCDMA/GSM
I use Assonance, and it's really good. Gives me great battery life too
I also like it because it's a more vanilla ROM than Perception/Cognition and Axura.
I think that after trying perception, cognition, axura, and the leaked 2.2, that my favorite is perception so far.
I think that certain aspects of each rom are better than the others, but perception has given me the best battery life so far and a GPS I can actually use. I miss the lockscreen on cognition though, and I wish I had my vibrations for key presses again, but I digress.

MIUI is very nice and very different. I like it, but if you are sticking to a Samsung ROM - try Continuum. It has TW4 and is very smooth.

Continuum 5.4.1 has TW4. In the latest release (5.5) he went back to TW3 for performance. I thought 5.4.1 w/ TW4 was pretty speedy - definitely liked it better than TW3.
how is the battery life in Continuum?
Im loving Phoenix Mosaic right now, been running it since the first release .. but honestly the only way to find you own personal preferance is to try a bunch of ROMS yourself.
GR-12, enough said!
Caution swyping! Read at your own risk.
Contiuum 5.5.... Great battery life and buttery smooth. Havent had one problem with it yet, including the ever nasty charging bug.(least not as bad as some other ROMs that Ive tried).
On average I can get 20+ hours on medium..... 15-17 hrs on heavy use. bout 50 texts, 30 minutes of phone calls and lots of air time on xda forums(not using wifi) and playing games.
i tried all the GB roms best battery life i found was on the new darkys rom. I am an power user so battery life matters, I flashed it with nothing and deleted the rest of the useless apps i got like 10 apps i use and like. but i do like to surf the web.
for looks i liked simply galaxy 2 and purple Licious both were butter.
and for the best speed it is Continuum its battery life isnt as good as a few others.
any of the JVK or JVO are very stable and good daily drivers.
JVB based roms have a few bugs nothing to stop daily use.
All are very good hard to make a stand out best it all depends on you taste and needs.
good luck I like all the samsung roms far better then CM7 battery life seems much better on the samsung roms.
Ive flashed to cm7, di11,and many others. For me serendipity takes the cake.

Continuum 5.5 with Xcal's kernel. Very smooth and stable, great battery life. Cesar's thread has good instructions and observations about moving from CM7.

im pretty sure you have to flash to stock first then load GB bootloaders since MIUI and CM use different bootloaders.

So out of those 5 which do you guys recommend: battery wise, speed wise, simplicity, and usefulness
Also, of the sense roms which are protected from htc's security logging and if they aren't how would i go about fixing the problem without removing sense completely
And any aosp roms besides cm7 that you recommend: battery wise, speed wise, simplicity, and usefulness
And any other miui roms besides Trips that you recommend: battery wise, speed wise, simplicity, and usefulness
Also what is the best kernel: battery wise, performance wise
(THIS IS NOT A QUESTION BUT AN OPEN THREAD FOR FINDING INFORMATION BASED ON PEOPLE'S EXPERIENCES)
I have tried most of the roms but keep going back to cm7.

Yeah...I really thought I was going to love being back on MIUI with TripN but damn. CM7 is just too good. I tried using MIUI 3 times now and just had to go back to CM7 each time.
Tried all of them. I can honestly say cm7 is far superior in every category you mentioned.
Melvins Beast rom w/No Sense!!
CM7 of course
for what you listed, CM7 is what you're looking for
InserCoin, if u like Sense, otherwise CM7
Your decision.

Leedroid doesn't have the logging, neither does InsertCoin. I checked.

No

Why don't u try some and get back to us. Contribute a little bit? LEEDROiDs kernel is great. Faux kernel always having issues. CM7 kernel is good. Stock is good

Lol the more I read this the more it bothers me.
Of the four requirements you listed two of them are subjective (simplicity, usefulness). If you're gonna call this an open discussion, frame the questions so we can compare facts against facts, rather than opinions.
Like what do u mean by usefulness? CM7 is useless to me since I hate the keyboard and camera. But based on the criteria u set, it's very fast with decent battery. Simplicity? Di u mean which Rom has the least settings so u can't make any changes to optimize the phone to suit your needs?
Sent from my HTC Sensation
Cm7 + faux kernel. As simple or complex as you like to make it, great battery life, no sense logging, and every interaction responds notably fatter than sense. Camera lacks a little its true but its good enough for now until they finish fixing it.
Remember also its an alpha release so not quite finished yet but its still very stable for daily use.s

Tried ARHD, Insertcoin and CM7 v7.
First of all, I use Go Launcher EX (over Sense and ADW).
The fastest was ARHD 3.1.1 with built-in kernel. CF-bench scored higher than SGS2 and all 3d games worked perfectly, but battery life was weak. 100% to zero in 1,5 hour when using with screen on (stock battery).
Then I tried CM7 v7. Go Launcher worked perfect, like on other mentioned roms. But, CF-bench score was really low, much lower than Sensation should have according to CF-bench graphs. You probably say, that I shouldn't care about benchmarks. Yes, it's true, but... CM7 was also weak in games! I tested Let's Golf 2 on all these roms, and on CM7 it was almost unplayable. FPS was good, but there were many lags and I couldn't properly hit the ball. And there is no Sense camera and dialer and weak FB integration. So far - CM7 not for me.
Now I use InsertCoin 2.5.5-2 + bricked kernel and it's perfect. Battery life is very good, all games works perfect, no lags in Let's Golf 2, 3d issue games (f.e. Cordy, Roboto), also work great with no issues. Everything is very smooth and I'm not going to change it for a long time (maybe for ICS if it will be on Sensations).
Point blank coredroid or rcmix3.5 both are different than all these roms good battery and everything to me if you want cm7 just go buy a nexus s the new one all stock android and faster than cm7
all of them...
Tried ARHD and for a sense rom it was nearly flawless except for the battery life (i'd carry a second battery to get thru a day). Then I tried InsertCoin and it was everything i wanted it to be. Super speedy, rock solid and had all of the extras i would usually add in anyway like the advanced power menu and quick settings. But alas it was a sense rom and I wanted to unleash the horsepower my HTC Sensation is packing, so I tried the CM7 ALPHA and i knew i was home. There isn't even a nightly build out yet for my phone and i cannot see any reason i would ever switch to another! even in alpha it is fast, stable, powerful, theme-able, and my daily driver! I say try a few before you choose because if you dont likke it... just flash another. Happy Flashing.
Thanks to kmobs for the selfKANGs!!
CM7 + Tiamat + GO Launcher EX
Came from the Nexus One, which I lost . I was running CM7, with Tiamat kernel, and GO launcher EX. I tried several Sense ROMs and several nonsense ROMs. Ending up going back to my Nexus setup. Plenty fast, all the features I want, battery life so far has been excellent. I don't like Sense.
nrvnqsrxk,
I understand that simplicity and usefulness are conflicting and confusing for some people so let me clarify it a bit more,
by simplicity I meant: user friendly-ness
by usefulness I meant: handy, basically on the opposite spectrum of simplicity
Each ROM could be clarified as either simple or more useful
For example, CM7 is useful but Sense is simpler, respectively of course
Does that help?
Also, since you accused me of not contributing, although I spent the time writing the thread and splitting it into categories, I will say this about the kernels, the faux kernel in my opinion is not very good on battery life but the bricked kernel is, in my opinion, stupendously fast when scrolling through the Sense homescreens and also good on battery life. With these opinions Sensation owners can then make their decision based on people's experience, therefore I do not need to frame the question you can if you would like and that is why it is called an open discussion.
dr.m0x how about battery life compared to android revolution HD 3.6.7 ?, the CM7 doesn't have sense i believe!!
lagging ? i never experienced lagging from neither stock neither the ARH
usefulness ? are you serious ? its an android, you can change it looks add launchers, customize it looks and all your daily apps will work on what so ever rom
it is YOU who make it useful
Insert Coin no other choice. Been with it since the start
maff's SENSE STOCK OPTIMIZED ROM is BETTER than ARHD in Battery LIFE and SNAPPY AS HELL. ALMOST LIKE CM7 no DELAY. Makes my friends Razor look like made in china i swear (the software atleast)
CM7 is the best rom in terms of my preferences.
CM9 (ICS) is just around the corner too.

good morning,
i'm quite new on this phone even if It works fine for me with a stock rom 4.0.4 I would you like to understand if there is a good advantage to pass on a custom rom.
Please share with me your experience and answer with my few questions:
what kind of custom rom and kermel you have on?
which is the difference there is in term of battery life; performance; stability.
Thanks for your help
Welcome to the Nexus ... you're going to love this phone. With that said, you need to jump in and do some reading. There is no shortage of opinion on which rom, kernel, or even GB vs ICS ... is best. It very much depends on your likes, dislikes, etc. I assume that you have a gsm device, so make sure to flash the appropriate roms, kernels, etc. Lastly, there is lots of help available, but it's always best if you dig in and bring yourself up to speed with what's already been posted in these great forums. Good luck!

thanks mate,
after few weeks i tested it, i find this phone a very good one and I don't feel the need to jump in a custom rom. I rooted it, installed a busybox and the clockwork and I added some apps to eliminate some gaps like the missing notification when the screen is off (I installed the noled apk for it) or like a switch off or switch on of the screen using the power button (I used an apps called accendi scermo and I switch on and off the screen using the phone sensor). The only thing that miss on this phone is an fm radio offline. I'm still searching a solution.
Stock rom: more stable, less features
Custom rom: less stable, more features
Well if you want to be normal. Than good for you.
Now a custom rom and kernel can give you unlimited privilages to things you can never imagine possible. Undervolting your device to give you brain blowing battery life or over clocking to give you awesome graphics.
A custom rom like CM9 or AOKP (there are way more than two but im just listing the popular ones) is of course better than stock since... well if it wasnt why would they make it. A kernel links your hardware to your software, meaning you can do some tweaking in the middle. If you find the right kernel and rom mix you can have a wopping 15 days standby on your battery (eg CM9 and Matr1x Kernel).
Now thats just the basics. if you are interested and want more information. Just do a bit of research and reading in this forum and ask questions in those forums. Hope this helps.

There is no best, they are all great, it is what's best for the user. Just keep doing what you did...try the ROMs. But ensure you read the OP's and scan thru the threads of the ROM you are looking for issues, also keep in my what issues you have someone may not have, just because we have the same phone does mean you will have the same issues. Diff apps, diff usage so on...
so flash away...
Well for ICS, try slim ICS or the aokp builds. But for jellybean, slimbean and hellybean are the best ROMs, I ran them on my vibrant and there are captivate variants of them.

I've gone through the same with my Captivate that came unlocked but Rogers branded.
In the end what works best for me is the original ROM (updated to the lasted release from Rogers, 2.3.3 I believe), rooted and most Rogers and Samsung apps uninstalled.
Works perfect, battery lasts about 2-3 days (I'm not a heavy user though, talk only a few minutes a day), and since it's rooted I can install and run anything I need on it and further customize it any way I like.
The forum rules state that members are not allowed to ask which ROM is the best because it always causes hassle. Please read the rules and stick to them

IMO the stock phone is extremely fast and smooth. With 2GB ram I also haven't seen any apps being forced out of memory.
So with a custom rom, all the speed tweaks etc, what exactly is improved over the stock phone. Do apps launch faster, less lag etc? Are there any videos comparing stock vs custom (esp AOSP vs TW) ?

I personally just used AOSP for about a day, switched back due to a few bugs, but it was definitely speedy quick. Faster than stock? Yes for sure, but stock is super fast as it is. As for AOSP vs TW, i'd love to stay on AOSP but i love the TW camera and just can't get over not having it You should try custom roms for each one and just see what you prefer

I agree 100%.
I have tried every ROM available at this point & I always end up going back to the setup in my sig.
I always chuckle when I read post claiming a ROM is smoother/faster/less lag etc than a completely debloated stock ROM like CleanROM or Synergy. Talk about the ultimate placebo affect......
Most have issues but many offer huge advantages from deep functionality to deep customization. If those interest you, perhaps small issues in stability or data usage are a worthwhile tradeoff. Not to mention that the simple fact that you CAN do such a thing is a very fun and educational experience about what is special with android.
Also, debloated, over clocked TouchWiz Roms like CleanRom are faster and able to be set up for greater battery savings. Without question. It's a large field! Have fun by doing, you can always go back without cost!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
The title of the thread was "...how fast..." I've posted on this before. Can we humans detect the subtle differences? Are the new roms simply a placebo effect of speed? I don't know.
What I look to are facts. The only facts we can use in comparing roms are the benchmarking tools. I have tried many different roms...Incu's, Slim's, Synergy's, Phantom, etc.....I have recently been flashing the Incubus Jellywiz roms pretty regularly, but got frustrated with some of the bugs ( more on these later ). So I went and retried the latest Slim and Synergy.
I can say. There was a perceptable difference between Slim/Synergy vs. Jellywiz. So I did a benchmark test. I tested each rom under pretty much the same conditions.
1. Flash the latest.
2. Disable the same Allshare/Samsung crap.
3. Load all my apps using Titanium.
4. Let the Rom settle for a most of the day
5. Test in the evening
No Overclocking...No other special changes.
I tested Using Antutu and Quandrant Standard....Slim and Synergy were about the same...in the high 4k's...around 4800 Antutu. Incubus' Jellywiz is always around 7800. Slim/Synergy was around 4800 in Quadrant, Jellywiz is consistantly up near 6000.
There are trade-offs / bugs / features....but...if you're looking for speed, I don't think you can find anything faster that Jellywiz.
The latest Custom has a custom overclocking kernal....for fun I bumped it up to 1800mhz and ran a 9500 Antutu. right now I'm running 192min 1200max and still pull a 7200 antutu score.
You pick:
> Speed = Jellywiz
< Bugs = Custom stock
My $0.02
CleanRom 2.1 with the CleanKernel 1.2 runs excellent for me, no problems, definitely quicker than stock, very smooth.
