is it possible to install a rom through flashboot - General Questions and Answers

hi and sorry if this has been posted before
i was trying to use psfreedom on my htc hero (well t mobile g2 touch) i did a nandroid backup but after formatted my sd card and forgot to do another
after reading lots of different posts on different websites and forums i was following a guide for htc hero gsm which got me to flash a recovery image to my rooted hero and then apply an update.zip
after applying the update.zip my phone wont load its just stuck on the t mobile g2 touch screen
i can get into recovery mode and the bootloader
when trying to install a rom on the recovery mode from a zip on the sd card it fails
so im wondering if its possible to wipe and then flash with fastboot at all
edit: just realised i typed flashboot not fastboot in the title
the error i get when trying to use a zip from sdcard in recovery is
E:board does not support mtd utils.E:failure at line 72:
write_raw_image Package:boot.img
BOOT:
installation aborted.
edit i tried to flash a different recovery image in fastboot and it just said waiting for device and didnt do anything

is your SD card divided into several partitions?

no will i need to partition it in order for it to work?

nope, just wondering because some roms may require that you not have your sd card formatted a certain way

try this place, they will be more experienced than I (im an eris/droid incredible user)

HELP!!!!

hello all,
i have had my HTC Magic/Sapphire for about 6 months now, i think i have bricked it but it i can still enter fastboot menu and all so not sure. since this and im not great with androids, i went and got a HTC Hero, so was wondering if anybody can help, have a couple of options.
1- send this to someone on her to fix it for me and willing to pay.
2- someone willing to buy it of me as i dont want to really get rid of it and just chuck it away.
so if there is any offers, please contact me
=]
follow this instructions...
Download a recovery rom for your device
There are several different recovery roms available for the HTC Magic devices.
Amon_RA has created several nice recovery roms available from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530492 and get the Recovery Rom appropriate for your device - these recovery roms have Nandroid Backup and Nandroid Restore and are perfect for the average user.
You can also use Cyanogen's 1.3.1 Recovery ROM available for: PVT32A devices and PVT32B devices - this rom has some additional options for partitioning your SD card for ?Apps2SD/Swapper/etc.
Fastboot the recovery rom
Fastbooting a rom doesn't write anything to your device - it just loads it directly from your PC - so it's a completely safe way of fixing/recovering/backing up your existing rom. To fastboot a rom you need to first drop your phone into Fastboot mode and check that it's working. Now drop into a command shell and make sure the recovery image you're wanting to load is in the same directory that you're running this in. If it's called something other than recovery-rom.img then substitute that instead.
C:\AndroidSDK> fastboot boot recovery-rom.img
Use the Recovery Rom to Backup your current ROM with Nandroid
Once you've booted to a recovery rom - you can use the Nandroid Backup option. If you get a 'cannot mount /dev/mkblkxxx error' when you do this then check your microSD card is inserted correctly and if so, wait a few seconds for it to register to the recovery rom correctly. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again (sdcard can take a few seconds to mount!)
Than boot your recovery and wipe the handheld...
Than pick your sd card and plug directly to your pc and save a compatible room to your card and name it update.zip
Put the sd card on the phone and enter on recovery method on the phone and install the new ROM
I think you can do it

[q] please please please help** i can only go as far as the bootloader

PLEASE PLEASE HELP i tried unlocking and rooting my nexus s, but i epic failed... now i can only access the bootloader... so i accessed it... unlocked it.. then tried to flash the clockworkmod recovery.. it said OKAY but then just gets stuck at the google screen with an unlocked lock.. i can't even access my phone.. i can only access the bootloader and im freaking out please help !
I don't like 3.0.2.4 so download http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988686 corresponding to your Nexus S model
rename it to recovery.img [assure that you have extensions shown otherwise it'll be recovery.img.img]
put it in /sdk/tools/
set your phone in bootloader mode
cd <wherever your SDK is>
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
go into recovery
OH MY GOSH, KAY NOW I HAVE CLOCKWORK MOD but i can't access my internal SD card.. and it still won't fully boot.. again it just gets stuck at the google bootscreen.. but atleast i have clockwork mod.. so whats next ? :O
so i got clockwork recovery, and as soon as i get into it.. it gives me a bunch of errors about not being able to mount cache and find it and find the recovery.log (about 8 or 9 lines of code).. but the recovery still works.. and i found a stock zip from google search.. now i tried to flash it (by first mounting my storage.. then putting the zip on my storage).. then tryed to a restore from the recovery.. it checks MD5 sums.. then it gives me a lot more error codes... could you please help ?
Well, to begin with, you should specify your phone model and provider because each build needs different ROM. And you shouldn't flash any random ROM from google. Instead try to lookup for the correct stock ROM in the Nexus S Development forum.
well im with Rogers Wireless (From Canada) and my phone model is the GT-I9020 and the problem im pretty much getting now is that it can't find boot and cache partitions...
EDIT** i can access adb aswell now
Have you tried downloading and flashing a custom rom from the nexus s android development section? (CM7 for instance) You mentioned previously that you put a stock zip to your internal storage but ended up restoring instead? Try downloading a custom rom, mount USB drive, copy the rom to the sdcard, unmount USB drive, wipe factory, wipe cache, advanced>wipe dalvik, choose zip to install, install the custom rom. Ideally that should get you past the Google logo and into a working build.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
the thing is.. it can't even restore the original zip.. like the partitions can't be found.. and it seems like its a brick now plus the phone isnt rooted... i was trying to root it.. then this whole thing came up...
When you say restoring from original zip, are you talking about a nandroid backup? Or a stock rom you downloaded? In any case, I would still recommend doing what I mentioned earlier. And no, your phone is not bricked at all.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
it's a nandroid backup ( i took the img. bundle in the folder thats labeled with the date *ie. 2010-12-22.21.06.07*).. i tried installing this as a backup.. and it wouldn;t work.. i got *checking md5 sum.. then 6 or 7 lines of code all seeming to relate to not being able to mount the cache partition and not being able to find recovery.log in the /cache... so i think my cache-ext is screwed up.. I tried using the sdpart script in adb.. and it didnt help matters... so im not sure what to do now

[SOLVED] Help HTC Desire S - have I bricked it

I have a desire S, Which is S-Off through revoltionary and rooted! But i don't have a nandroid backup and my phone will no longer boot up. what can i do? I've tried to do a factory reset in recovery mode but that doesnt work.
How can i flash a stock rom on it to get it back to normal, i think its bricked... can someone help me?
1st of all i suggest you download a custom rom from the development section here.
then flash that via recovery. then hopefully your phone will load up into the new rom.
after you confirm this to me i will help you further to get back to stock rom
Thanks for the reply.
I did what you said, i tried to install a custom rom in recovery but it ends up aborting after a while, i dont think i can get any rom to work now, its not looking good
Fingers crossed
See this thread
Attempt the commands that are shown within the first #1 of it and you should be able to determine whether or not you have a fried eMMC chip.
See links in my signature for adb & fastboot drivers and the thread you need to see.
What recovery are you using? and what rom are you trying to flash?
I suggest downloading this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1048203
Once you have done this follow these steps below to the letter
1. Boot into recovery
2. Format System (not wipe option but format option !!!)
3. Format Data
4. Format Cache
5. Wipe Data/Factory reset (1st option in wipe/format menu)
6. Wipe Dalvik Cache
7. Now install zip from sd card and flash the rom
8. Reboot
It was the Saga LBC mod that i was trying to install but it didn't work, nothing works that i try. i've formatted my sd card nom. basicly ive screwed everything up i've got no back ups of any rom and i cant get anything working

can you give me a step by step explanation of what you are doing and what messages/error messages you are getting at each stage?
I will try to help you the best i can. But i need to try to understand what the main issue is 1st. Don't worry just yet!

You need to give specifics and preferably screen pictures....(if possible) did you try the commands from the thread that I posted above, or what happens when you attempted the commands layed out by Eclipse_Driod above?
The more you tell us, the more we have to work with!?
I'm sorry but I dont know how to do the command thing, i'm a newbie when it comed to that I've basicly got a desire s that wont boot up and a SD card with nothing on, i think i need to somehow put a recovery image on my phone before i can install a rom
Is there any way i can install a recovery image to the sd card from the pc, that will then allow me to install a rom?

I believe that you already have a fully working recovery on your device, otherwise you wouldn't have been able to flash LBC ROM in the first place....so I suspect that the problem is else where....(possibly damaged eMMC chip) but unless you help us, by running the commands and testing this we are un-able to confirm this for you.
You can find the adb and fastboot commands as a link in my signature simply download and then put these on you PC and run the commands that were in the thread I posted earlier (thats also in my sig Fried eMMC?)
Although I also believe that if you're able to get to S-OFF then you're able to enter the commands from your PC that will enable you to flash a recovery onto your device.
See this post where I've previously instructed some one else how to do just this.
Any questions then just and try to take screen captures or cut 'n' pastes of all errors encountered.
Good luck

does it not even boot into recovery?
you need to hold down the volume down button and keep it held down while you power on the device. This will make it boot into recovery mode.
But before you can do that i would advise you take the sd card out of the phone, connect it to your computer with a card reader and copy over the lbc mod rom.zip file straight onto the card, then put it back into the phone.
then turn the phone off and boot into recover as mentioned above and select install rom from sd card and select the zip file you transferred over.
after it has installed reboot phone by selecting the "reboot" option in the recovery mode.
all should now be well.
report back how this goes
and don't forget to hit that thanks button
Thanks for your patience.. I'm going to try and explain in full what i've done
I got S-off on my Desire S using "Revoluntionary" (after watching how to do it on YouTube) and after domwloading ClockWorkMod from market place I sucessfully installed Saga LBC ver 5.3. Everything was fine i was very pleased. I had a back up of the old stock ROM saved on my SD card which i did through Clockworkmod too.
Then this morning I got a update message from clockworkmod saying ver6.0 was available to download so i did. My phone never turned back on again I could get into recovery mode but nothing would work (wipe data, factory reset, Even tryin to install the old backed up rom didn;t work) it just kept freezing.
So i took my sd card out and plugged it into the pc to try to look for anothr rom to try out, thats when i ended up formattig the SD card (god knows why) So now ive got no backup, no clockworkmod, no nothing on my SD card...Am I screwed??

from what you have told me u still have clockwordmod recovery as it is on the phone itself. not the sd card. So you are ok there. What i need you to do next it to see if you are able to boot into recovery?
if you can then try again to format data, system and cache.
then try installing a rom from your sd card.
if it is still freezing while trying to perform a format then look back at bens previous posts about using adb through your pc to find out if your emmc chip is damaged
I can boot into recovery no probs there, but when i format data, system and cache it goes so far and then aborts
Ive just tried to install the LBC rom again i renames it PG88IMG ind it asked me to install so i did. It says 'update in progress' and the bar on the right starts to fill up but it stops near the top and eventually aborts
right, the only thing i can think of to try next is following the same method you said you followed to s-off through revolutionary.
it will say you are already s-off or something but click proceed anyway. and make sure from there that you type "y" when it asks if you want it to install clockworkmod recovery. as this will reinstall a fresh recovery image for you.
this is the only thing i can think of.
let me know how it goes
did you look at my post#11 above...
The second half of it contains instructions on how you can flash a new recovery image......from your PC.
Ive just tried to do the s-off again the way i did before but i can only go as far as the part when i connect my phone and open the revolutionary programme and it doesn't detect my phone
Ok, it looks like the last option to try is flashing a new recovery image manually.
For this you will need to download and install adb. which can be found here
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/what-is-adb-and-how-to-install-it-android/
along with instructions of how to set it up and use it.
after you have done this you will need to download this
http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-saga.img
which is the latest clockworkmod recovery for your phone. and rename it to recovery.img
then copy the recovery image to a convenient location on your computer, preferably with a short path. We will be placing it on the C Drive directly (not in any folder) and using that in the next steps.
Power your device off and reboot it in fastboot mode. (holding volume down whilst pressing power on button) then select "fastboot" from the list of options you get.
Connect your device to your computer via USB and wait till you see ‘fastboot USB’ on the screen.
Launch Command Prompt and type the following command:
fastboot flash recovery c:\recovery.img
Wait for the process to finish and reboot your device once it’s done.

evo 4g stuck in recovery HELP

i tried to do the gps fix on my evo 4g running the rc cm7. i downloaded a sense rom and attempted to fix the switched back to cm7 rc1. now my phone is stuck in recovery and i cannot restore any of my backups. it says error while flashing boot image. PLEASE HELP
Have you tried flashing a rom instead of restoring?
It could be your SD card. Copy the contents onto your computer and format the card. Put whatever you need to flash back on the formatted card and try flashing again.
What recovery are you using? You can try a different recovery (or reflashing).

it wont even let me connect my phone to my comp. it just sticks me in an endless cycle of clockworkmod recovery v5.0.2.2 it wont let me load up to my phone so i can install another rom. it just keeps saying error while flashing boot image. it will let me go to advanced under restore and manual let me restore everything but restore boot is the only thing that fails
Try Amon Ra. It won't let you restore the backups made with ClockworkMod, but you should be able to connect to your computer through usb-ms toggle and put a rom on your SD card to flash. You can also try flashing an older version of ClockworkMod, I've heard of issues with one of the newer versions.
It you can get a card reader or somehow transfer files to your card, flash one of these through hboot. Hboot will scan and find the PC36IMG and ask you to "update" - select yes, then no when it asks you to reboot. Select recovery and go from there.
Amon Ra is here: http://db.tt/WP0beNa
Clockwork 3.something is here: http://db.tt/9sksyTK
Both are already named correctly, so don't rename it.
If you could access your SD card then you'd have a lot more options. Not just flashing a different recovery, but flashing a rom or formatting your card.
Your boot partition could somehow be corrupted. Hopefully not, but it is a possibility.

ok i put both links on my sd card and when i connect to fastboot it detects the file but it says no image detected. it never asks me to update. and i tried instaling the pc36img.zip manually in recovery but it is aborted.

I'm also having a similar issue with the new ClockworkMod Recovery. Until its fixed I've been using 3.x to do all my work...
Is there a place where we can contact the devs behind it to submit bugs or something?

I still cant connect to the computer. i have been taking out my sd card and putting it in the card reader. i am happy aman ra worked. since then i have tried flashing cm7, cm6, and cm7rc1. everytime i try it lets me get to the point where it says installing update but then it says " assert failed: write_raw_image("/tmp/boot.img","boot" Then the name and location of the zip then status 7. i am close i think. i just cant get into my phone at all to make phone calls or text. also i have not been able to connect to the computer with amon ra. Is there a setting i have to enable? thanks for the help guys. I was so lost and now it seems like i am making a little progress
In order to access your SD card from Amon Ra, you need to plug it in and select usb-ms toggle. That's all that you need to do, so if it isn't working then something is wrong.
Have you tried running an RUU? Considering that it won't flash the boot partition, I feel like something more permanent might be wrong. If you can get the RUU to flash, then you may be able to flash from there.
I still recommend formatting your SD card if you haven't already. It can't hurt, just remember to backup everything on the card.

i got it fixed. yea. it turns out i just needed a pc36img.zip that had the rom on it i used the sprint lovers from a link i got out of another forum. if it helps anyone else this is where i found it.

Thank you everyone for your help. this is the first time i have ever posed anything in a forum and all of you help was invaluable. thanks a thousand time

[Q] AT&T HTC One X Softbricked-CMmod

I believe I have bricked my phone. I was running a rooted HTC One X AT&T with an odex Jellybean/HTC Sense 4+ ROM. I wanted to test out a Cyanogenmod. Big mistake. I tried to flash it from TWRP recovery, after backing up my previous ROM, however, it was stuck in an endless boot loop. I took advice from some people online and reflashed it/ wiped caches/dalvik cache etc... When I realized it would not work unless I fastbooted it myself using USB debugging I tried to reinstall the old ROM, of course, after wiping the Cyanogenmod. Long story short there was no backup even though I backed up the phone! I now have no ROM and everything on my system is gone! My SD card folder only has a TWRP recovery and I can't install any .zip files. TWRP isn't even allowing me to mount my SD card so putting any files are out of the question. I believe, however, that usb debugging was on the whole time (is it on if on the boot loader it says fastboot usb when I plug in a USB?). Is there anyway to fix this?? I'm really screwed if I can't and please don't direct me to another thread because I need personalized help. I'm doing this on a mac by the way so anyone who knows how to use the terminal would help a lot. I can get access to windows though if needed. Just please help.
Have you tried to flash the boot.img from the zip file in fastboot?
Do you know what a brick is? When your phone does NOTHING... Similar to a brick.
What happened to you is you didn't flash the boot.img through fastboot, which caused your first problem, the bootloop..
Second thing you did incorrect was perform a factory reset in boot loader... Which completely wipes your SD card and corrupts it, and which just so happened to contain your backup no worries, easily fixable...
Download a rom on your computer. While its downloading, enter recovery and choose mount. Navigate to my computer and right click the removable storage option. Choose format. Once its done, drag rom onto phone.. Flash rom in twrp.
Extract rom on your computer, grab the boot.img and flash with fastboot.
Fastboot flash boot boot.img
Reboot phone and profit
EDIT: sorry but I hastily skimmed through your post... Those are half-assed instructions for windows, I have no clue what to do on a mac
