[Q] Can I delete the TMP files in SDcard Folder? - G Tablet General

I noticed several DiskCacheIndex****.TMP files stored in my SDCard folder. Can these be deleted without causing any issues? What is generating these temporary files?
Thanks,
Gramps

I have only noticed these on TnT stock. TnT Lite (or any other mod) does not create these.
With that in mind, if you are on a mod then you can delete them. I have done this, myself. But on stock, I don't know what they are used for so you might have to leave them there, at least the newest files.
As for what is creating them, it has to be one of the TnT apks. The reason why is process of elimination. TnT Lite does not have the issue and removes several TnT apks, thus one of those apks is probably the culprit. My guess is that it's the homescreen itself.

TMP files in SDCARD folder
I've noticed those TMP files as well.
I have a stock gTab as well and just started deleting them. I haven't had any ill effects <knock on wood> so far. I don't know what creates them but I did have about eight of them last night when I checked my SDCARD folder. I had been using the Camera, Photo and News APKs going in and out of them several times. So I tend to agree with what Roebeet mentioned.
I've gotten kind of used to stock but have been leaning towards TNT Lite or Vegan. I just haven't decided yet.

how to delete tmp files
How do you delete the temporary files on the internal SD card?

Changing Market App Icons

Hello,
I did some searching before posting this and have come up with little results that are working for me. I have been able to change my stock icon apps using the method on androidcentral (sorry, can not post links yet). However, trying the same thing with Free Market Apps, I have been unsuccessful.
I am able to get the com.*.*.apk file off of my phone, and can extract the res folder, but after editing and pushing the file back onto the phone, the application is "uninstalled." I believe that I have to sign the apk file again, which I've tried doing with no success.
What I do not understand, is the app Bettercut has the ability to change these Market App Icons, so I thought we should be able to do so as well. If anyone has any knowledge of how to do this, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks
Hey you
Change your graphics. Uninstall the app from your phone, put the edited .apk on your sd card and install it with astro (or another app that installs apk files). If you update from market you'll lose customizations.
Hiya.
Yeah, I tried that, but I keep getting unable to install. I do have non-market apps checked, but still no luck. I'm basically just editing the graphic from the com.*.*.apk file, opeing the com.*.*.apk file with 7zip, placing the new graphic in the res/drawable folder, closing 7zip, then I put the com.*.*.apk file onto my SD card (after uninstalling original app) then use astro to install. Doing this is not working. I thought I might have to sign the apk file, rename it or something. Not really sure at this point.

I got it to work by pushing the .apks back through adb and not using a File Manager. I changed a bunch of my Market icons without any problem. No fc's or install failures.
So say for example you were to change the Market Icon for Spare Parts. I assume you did the following:
Pulled com.androidapps.spare_parts.apk from /data/app
Edited the app_icon.png file within the res/drawable folder
Uninstalled Spare Parts
Pushed com.androidapps.spare_parts.apk back to /data/app
Or did you do it differently?
Thanks again for all the help on this. Not sure exactly what is going wrong on my end.
I never uninstalled the apk. I just drug a copy of the .apk to my computer, edited the image, and then pushed it back over the original one. Im in no way any kind of expert, but it worked when I did it.
Hmm. So are you going into /data/app and pulling the com.androidapps.spare_parts.apk (for example), editing, then pushing back w/ out signing or anything? I assume you are pushing back the same file, name exactly the same and everything.
So for example you would have pulled com.androidapps.spare_parts.apk from /data/app, edited the png within the apk file, then pushed com.androidapps.spare_parts.apk back to /data/app and it worked?
No rebooting, signing or anything?
I'm using Fresh 1.1 with MCK and again, do not have SD card partitioned for apps2sd yet.
Thanks again.
Yep, that's what I did. No updating, signing, nothin. I did reboot after I was all done. And I dont mess around with that apps2sd business either. So it should be the same.

Wow that worked pretty nicely! I was trying to change the little slide bar that moves as you change screens. I kept upzipping the file and modifying it, then rezipping and trying to reinstall. 7zip lets you modify the .apk with out opening it up...glad this subject came up and you answered this!
Ok. Step by step here is what I did just now:
1. adb pull /data/app/com.androidapps.spare_parts.apk C:\Users\Chris\Desktop
2. Used 7zip to open the apk file.
3. Moved my app_icon.png file into the res/drawable folder and overwrote the current one
4. adb push C:\Users\Chris\Desktop\com.androidapps.spare_parts.apk /data/app/
5. adb shell
6. reboot
Doing this did not work. It only made the icon on my home screen for Spare Parts go away, and the app is no longer listed as being installed. I can still see the file in my /data/app/ directory, but it is not installed or showing up anywhere.
Any ideas?

Try pulling the original icon and editing it. Just make it a solid black square. Then put it back in and push to the phone. Sounds like your new icon changes the filesize enough that it needs resigned.

Phone keeps connect/disconnecting from USB after root and some bloatware removal

I'm not sure what I could have removed that would cause this, but I'm attempting a restore. would anyone be willing to upload the standard contents of the /system/app folder for me?

when are people going to learn to reNAME instead of reMOVE. it's a BAD idea to experiment like that without even having an SBF yet. I'd say from now on, stick to the list of apps that are "safe to remove" from droid x. I don't have the time to get the system apps right now but I may be able to when I get home later
Yes, you should just rename files so that you can restore them easily.
Check the system dump in the Themes and Apps forum.. see if you can reconstruct from that.
yeah, Im not even sure what messed up, I was going off the safe to remove list found droidxforums com/forum/droid-x-hacks/1347-removing-bloat-11.html#post13552
and its working again.
I just restored my backup, and it works fine.

Adventures in Flashing

Let me begin by stating that I am not an expert. What I am about to relate are my own experiences today. They may help answer some questions and raise others. Hopefully someone that knows more than me will jump in and add to this.
I loved my g-tab when I got it and reloaded it with tnt-lite. I was sad when I reflashed it to try vegan and all my apps were gone. This isn't necessary but I had no idea what I was doing in any orderly sense of the word. Since then there has been a great post with simple steps on how to flash a rom. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016695 I happened to see the Woot announcement and jumped on it to get a second tablet to experiment with so I wouldn't mess up my original once I had gotten it to just where I wanted it (that too was probably not necessary as you will soon read).
Out of the box I setup the gtab and then installed the ota update to bring it up to current specs. Next I installed ClockworkMod and re-partioned he tab as described in the post cited above. Next I made a backup using ClockworkMod so I had a full backup of the original system. These got stored in a folder ClockworkMod/Backup (and it seems they have to be here if you want to restore them). Being a cautious kind of guy, I made a copy of the folder on my SDcard2. Also, being perhaps a bit more cautious, I plugged in the usb and copied the same folder to my PC for good measure.
Now, I made a folder on the g-tab called INSTALLS (you can call it whatever you want) and copied the various rom zip files into it. I also copied clemsyns newest kernel there for use with Calkulins 1.1 rom. I also copied Calkulin's Format-All zip file here as well http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=985705&highlight=calkulin's+rom
Initially, I was using ClockworkMod to wipe the partitions but it appears to me that Calkulin's FormatAll can do it all at once (correct me if I'm wrong) so I switched to using that.
So - Reboot, hold down the power and volume+ keys to start ClockworkMod. Click over to install zip from sdcard. Click to choose zip from sdcard. Browse to your INSTALL directory and there are all the zip files. Right now mine has tnt_lite_v4.40/, Calkulin's FORMAT_ALL.zip, Calkulin's_G-Tab_ROM_v1.1.zip, ClemsynFROYOVersion9.zip,gtab.VEGAn.1.00.beta5.1.user.final.zip and gtab.VEGAn.1.00.beta5.11.supp.zip
Select Calkulin's FORMAT_ALL and it reformats "critical" partitions. Once it finishes, come back here and choose a ROM to install. For the sake of discussion, choose the first - tnt_lite_v4.40/ Once it finishes installing, reboot and there you are with tntlite4.40. You'll still have to do the market fix as described in the installation instructions cited in the beginning of this post.
Now get it all set up the way you like, play around, etc. and then do this. Boot up to ClockworkMod and make a backup. When it is done you can boot back up into tnt_lite or whatever ROM you've installed. Use a file explorer and you'll find the clockworkmod folder and inside you will find a folder named backup and inside is your backup. I copied it to my SDCard2 and also to my PC for safe keeping.
Now you can rinse and repeat as needed for all the other roms you want to try. So format, install rom, configure it then back it up with Clockwork Mod. When you've done all the roms you want you can just restore any one you feel like using. Remember - you are restoring from the clockworkmod/backup folder, not the INSTALL folder. Also, the names of the backups are like datestamps so write down which is which if you have several. I have a little text file in the directory that I update to keep track of which is which.
It seems pretty simple and perhaps there is something I've missed but so far I've installed, backed up and restored several roms and this has worked without a hitch. Oh - the backups seem to have checksums or something because a backup of one g-tab won't restore on another.
I hope this helps some of you that are playing around like I am without a full understanding of how everything works but still determined to try stuff. Again, anyone with more information and knowledge to add, please leave your comments.

[Q] Deleting Sample Music/Pictures

Hey guys,
Has anyone been able to successfully remove the sample music tracks and pictures from the internal storage on the transformer?
I have tried Total Commander & ASUS File Manager as well as Windows MTP deletion, but the files just won't go away.
I have tried using ADB (it works on PressReader, the redundant Zinio app), but I can't seem to reference 'spaces' on the CLI.
So I 'cd' to system/sdcard/Music/ and attempt
rm 01 Buzz Dees_Mitkomm.mp3
which gives me "Can't find 01, no such..etc" which indicates it can't understand the spaces. Any tips for spaces?
I am rooted and busyboxed on Revolver 2.0 ROM, Android 3.2 and type-B60 transformer.
Cheers.
I don't see any sample files, maybe because I'm on custom rom. What does the asus file manger says when you want to delete them ? Maybe the files have read only access, but I doubt it. Try to delete them via the music player and via gallery.
Hope it helps.
Hmm. I guess they're not really intruding into my UX, so it's a minor problem atm.
You probably don't see any because when you flashed your ROM, it wiped the sdcard folder too. I used a modified recovery to ensure sdcard isn't touched so I don't have to put files back on every time / make unnecessarily large nandroid backups.

Cannot delete files or folders within /data/data/

Setup: CROMI 3.4.7 with Data2SD
I am having issues deleting folders and files within the /data/data/ portion of my file structure. I have tried with both th File Manager HD and ES File Explorer but I keep getting messages saying that I am unable to delete those folders and files.
The reason I am trying to delete this is because I was unable to install certain apps, and continually got an error message during installation that said:
Unknown error code during application install: "-24"
From searching forums, I found that the issue is that previous installations (I guess I forgot to do a factory reset before reflashing a ROM) left certain system folders and files for certain applications, which prevented a fresh installation from taking place. Other users have resolved this issue by deleting the relevant files in the /data/data/ section of their tablet.
I have circumvented the issue by renaming those folders (which for some reason works), but still cannot delete those renamed folders. I've tried messing with the permissions, but still no luck.
Any ideas?
Possibly an ownership problem?
Boot into recovery, plug in the USB cable, go into adb shell. Make sure that /data is mounted. Then do something like:
cd /data/data
chown -R media_rw.media_rw *
Might wanna backup first...

Don't do that if you want any apps to work afterwards.
Eeeeek, good catch!
I was thinking data/media.
You could do this just for the specific folders you want to delete, but not all...
