I plan on modding both of them heavily. Which is the better option. The thing is I hate the tap tap on the view sonic.
If you are going to flash the Roman on the viewsonic then you don't have to worry about the tapntap. Get the viewsonic, more memory....bigger screen.
What is roman? Do you mean rom? And also what rom do you guys recommend that looks the most like stock android?
Oops I meant rom (I blame autocorrect). Lots of people are using vegan or tntlite. I'm rocking tntlite.
Oh alright cool! And does it actually look like android? Nofication bar and all? Also is there a lock screen?
Oh alright cool! And do these roms actually look like android? Is there an unlock screen, cause I've heard there isn't.
I just read an article about the A7, and besides the memory, they claimed that it wasn't true multitouch...

VegaN has the default lock screen and yes... has notification bar.... some goodies that add buttons to it... but basically last beta was so fast and smooth I never went back to TnTLite...
Alright cool! I bought a elocity A7 lastnite! I think i am going to return it an instead pick one of these up from my local sears!
Viewsonic for now has more support here but has been out 6 weeks or more. The Elocity just came out so I think in time modding will be a wash. Depends u want bigger screen with worse viewi g angles or smaller screen that has less ram but is less expensive so can get bigger sd card. Out of the box ui and flash is better on Elocity.
As far as moding goes, the gtab would probably be the easiest with its lack of bootloader security.
An far an use goes, the 10 inch is better for browsing and every day use. The 7 inch is more portable for carrying around.
I have a gtab and an archos 70, and that is my thoughts on the two form factors. Basically the 10 inch is better for general use and the 7 inch is better if portability is the main priority.

Elocity apparently comes rooted so it will be modders dream if we can get someone like Roebeet or Rothnic on it
WoW Elocity seems great
Where are you getting the Elocity from and what is the price.. I may look into it. sounds like a killer device.. .
Google is your friend
Its on amazon.
It's certainly an interesting looking device. I'd love to see one in person so I could play with it a bit. I've had and returned a couple of 7" tablets and the form factor was pretty nice and portable, it was always the processor that was lacking so this would seem to fix that issue for me. For the price it certainly has a nice feature set though, and it's pretty tempting.
I have both the Elocity A7 and Viewsonic G Tablet. I will have to say, my preference leans towards a smaller screen. I currently have the EVO and for light reading, etc the A7 did it for me. It already came rooted however, as it's mentioned earlier, the hack community for this tablet is VERY small - if it even exist at all. For that reason alone, I decided to focus on my Viewsonic.
I finally flashed it with TnT Lite on my Viewsonic and it has been a godsend. I hate saying this and I've defended argument about how the Android market access doesn't "make or break" a tablet but in this case, I am returning my Elocity A7 due to the lack of "hacks" and ability to gain access to the Android market. I am sure that in a few weeks/months, the Elocity A7 will have access to the market through a flash, etc but I personally cannot wait that long considering that I only have a limited time before I'm "outside" of their return policy.
Additionally, the Elocity A7 is somewhat "buggy". Not sure why but coming out of standby, the tablet is VERY slow - almost to the point where you can't use it and just wait for a little bit. Also, the power/standby button and the tablet's reaction time to come out of standby or go into standby is heavily delayed. I'm talking a good 4-6 seconds here. That's not acceptable.
It's also not true multi-touch and this is what broke the camel's back on my end. There's pinch to zoom on the browser but even that is buggy. You zoom in and it "over zooms" so it's basically useless for that purpose. I've tested the multitouch function through the multitouch app and it only recognizes one finger. With the awesome hardware it has, I'm not sure why the company decided on a one-finger capacitative screen. That just boggles my mind.
Viewsonic is by no means exempt from bugs as well. Why does the tablet come out of standby when I press the home key? Isn't that what the standby/power button is for? The sound: apparently you need it to be at the max to hear anything. Not but not least (and this is probably what the "defect" is), the screen. Viewsonic is known for making awesome monitors, right? Um. Yea.
But all in all, the Elocity is going back and I'm keeping the ViewSonic. I'm not 100% happy with what I have but with the support it has from the XDA community, I feel more "secure" keeping this product for the long-term (I'm sure I meant short term, but I you know what I mean).
Edit: Oh yea...BTW, the battery life difference between the A7 and G Tablet is NIGHT and DAY. While the A7 battery is slightly better than that of say, an Android smartphone, the Viewsonic battery life is absolutely phenomenal. I actually sat down one day for a good (ashamed to admit) 3 hours straight using this thing. One hour, I streamed Pandora while loading RSS feeds and playing Angry Birds for a good 1.5 to 2 hours and I was at 80% battery life! You cannot beat that.
I had the Viewsonic G Tablet and it took it back due to the defect scare. maybe i will go back and pick it up. I don't know.. however i need a tablet before christmas and the adam from notion ink is nowhere to be found. Can anyone assist me... I am not going to bother with the elocity... so I guess I need to choose between the Nook color, the archos 101 and the Viewsonic G tablet. I will use it ot read books, magazines, ocassional games.. web browsing, and whatever else I can think up. I usually get my devices and mod all of em. Please help.. the local sears has 5 in stock... however they have about 9 of them at the clearance outlet for a cheaper price...

I have both as well. This post is spot on, 100% in line with how I feel. Honestly, the answer is neither. I'm going to return both devices. The dealbreaker for the gtablet is the horrible screen viewing angles. The dealbreaker for the A7 is the lack of multitouch (and the low screen resolution). I'm keeping my fingers crossed that something worthy of my dollars will be released during CES.

Bj's was running a sale last week for 299$ plus shipping
Amazon has it for 349$
Followed the directions on this forum:
1. Installed clockworkmod
2. Flashed with TnT 3.00
3. Got full market to work
Started downloading apps.
This Tablet is awesome! I bought 12/2 and returned 12/4. Then followed this forum and the threads while I deciding on a new Tablet. Decided to try the Gtablet again and purchased again 12/18/10.
This thing blows away my friends' Ipads. Now, finally an Ipad killer.
Thank you to the great people on this forum. You guys are the best.
I miss my gtab
but I just couldn't get over how crappy the screen and view angle on it.
I think its hardware is amazing and the price is great on it too. Loved the long....LONG battery life too, but how can viewsonic have such a crappy screen and such low viewing angle?
I agree with ByBy. Picked my Gtab up on Sears Outlet and I've got TnT Lite running with Launcher Pro, Flash, and Market access and its awesome! Yah yah the screen isn't the best but if you hold it right it's fine, overall it's a great piece of hardware especially at a sub $300 price.
It's not quite an iPad killer but the open nature of Android really allows you to customize your experience and this is something iPad lacks. Couple that with the dual core Tegra2, Adobe Flash support, incredibly long battery life, and a webcam and this Tablet has the potential to be a serious competitor. We just need more support from Viewsonic(Kernel source and drivers), nVidia(GPU driver improvements), and Google(Honeycomb!).
Hopefully Viewsonic will release the kernel source as promised and we'll see even better speed optimizations and possibly even an OC capable kernel. I'm sure we'll continue to see more improvements with software and drivers as competitors begin to launch other Tegra2 tablets.
Cmon Viewsonic, release the source already!
Big thanks to the our local devs, the Fantastic Four, for making this tablet run the way it should have right out of the box!

The display is fine as long as you view from left, right or down. Viewing up to the the display is the problem. Though the viewing angle of the 101 is a little better (not a lot), the color depth of the Gtablet is far better than the 101.
For the $350 I paid, the display and total system ability is a solid purchase. Even at $400 it would be, considering the Tegra 2, USB host and 16gb internal storage.
added: Still, if the display had better angles- wow.
Thing is just so fast, it's making me really consider the elocity a7 over the Nook Color as my 7" complementary tablet even though I'm almost 100% certain that support from elocity won't be nearly as good as B&N support for the NC.
And as a secondary aside the display of the NC isn't swaying me enough against another Tegra 2 and "crappy" 800x480 screen...
Viewsonic re-released a piece of junk? The G Tablet got pulled from Staples, Sears had a high rate of returns, and things were looking bad for this tablet although it has great specs and a slightly better screen than archos 101 but continues to be a dog. Viewsonic and TapnTouch is a crazy implementation, cyanogen, tnt, vegn are saving the viewsonic tablet but overall it is still a disappointment. The screen resolution is not all that hot and all the tweaks are buggy with no real relief in sight. We need sholes or a well established developer to take the reigns and get this working - especially with CES right around the corner. Without a dedicated developer the viewsonic will die, if we dont get one soon they all might work on bigger and better tablets. Look at the archos - no hack or mod and it is dying. I dont want this to happen to the gtab.
Anybody know if sholes, or bugless, or chevy are going to take this on?
Ahm, I have no idea if we have any big developers coming along, but the ones that are here are great, and I don't know what you mean about mods being unstable. At this point my g-tablet is more stable then my eris which has had months more development.

I think that to say that Roebeet, GoJimi, rothnic, bekit, clemsyn, pershoot, rcgabreal, vsc and anyone else (sorry anyone I didn't mention) devoting their time to this are not dedicated developers is selling them short. I love Pete and am currently running his Rom on my droid with a chevy kernel but that doesn't mean they have to be involved or its gonna die. The Viewsonic G Tablet is just another rebrand of several other tablets out there.
Lets not forget that the source code was just released a little over a week ago and it wasn't even the current source. The G Tab is open. Getting root is easy. Modding is easy. Viewsonic is aware of XDA and what is going here and is half ass supporting it. Don't think for an instant that Motorola is gonna release a tab that is not locked down like the x or 2. Yes there will better tablets. There will always be something better coming.
Gingerbread was released before the source for the G Tab was and there are roms that are "buggy with no real relief in site". Give these guys a chance before you just write them off. They've come a hellava long way in the last week alone.
This thread is really a bunch of nonsense.. You come here, say that everything is junk, make it clear that people should just build stuff for you... And if they don't, oh my! The sky will fall! Do you know how to do any of what you ask? If you don't like the tablet then why not sell it, return it, run it over with a car?
Your post came across to me as everything sucks, the developers suck, and you think you are really smart....
Like they say on the football show.... Cmon man!!!!!
I don't know what you are talking about. The GTablet is an overall fine piece of electronics especially when you consider the price. It can frequently be had for less than $350 when on sale at Sears.
It's a diamond in the rough and we are lucky to have great devs that are willing to make it shine for us without asking for much of anything in return.
It's true that the screen needs improvement but everything else is phenomenal and if not for the great devs on this site the tablet would have been written off as subpar but due to their efforts it is freakin' awesome!
I am running Vegan beta 5 and it literally blows me away. It is:
A. Fast
B. Stable
C. Gorgeous to look at
D. Did I mention that it is effin' fast!!
If you want something better either pay more for something to debut at CES or roll your own!
Dog? mine is not a dog. I have a very useful time saving device, for under $400.00 bucks.
I also have an ipad and a Galaxy Tab and have tried several other tablets over the last 6 months.
Running VegaN 5.1 my ViewSonic is by far the best tablet I have used or owned. The developers here on XDA have made this an excellent tool in a short time. I have used other ROMs on my Droid phones and the VegaN is stable as any other ROM I have used.. Mine runs extremely well with none of the issues you state in your post and is a far better overall unit than the other tablets I own. Even the narrow angle of view is not really a problem for my use. I don't need any "big" developers ROM on my tablet. The ones working on it now are doing just fine. I can't think of any other tablet that is currently available that I would rather have as my gtab with vegaN. When the new tabs start to roll out in the coming months I don't think I will have any regrets about my purchase of the gtab. If I should purchase another tablet this year, it will be because I'm a gadget junkie, not because of a lack of function or usability of my gtab.
WTF? What's wrong with you?
Enjoy it for what it is, and not so much on what it could be. It's already leaps and bounds better than it was even a month ago.
Technology is constantly changing - who know what will happen in six months. Ultimately I want a device I can use today, or else what's the point?

Nervy for a first post.
I find your tone to be disrespectful to the people who turned an unusable off-the-shelf product and made it fast, friendly and stable in mere days. Now that the source is (finally) available the quality of the core OS, in several flavors, easily equals or exceeds the better commercial releases I've seen. New core functions are appearing near-daily and I marvel at the skill and time being dedicated, for free, on our behalf.
Go lie down by your dish.
WTF?!?! Did you come here just to troll our forum?? Our "not well established developers", as you so eloquently put it, were indirectly recognized by Viewsonic itself and mentioned our XDA forum on the Gtablet page. Without the tireless work of our AMAZING development team the Gtablet would have surely died by now making them the "saviors" of the Gtab as we know it. I have run VEGAn and am currently running the latest TnT lite with nothing but rock solid stability. In fact, OUR DEVELOPMENT TEAM is the only reason that I have 2 Gtabs in my household and I'm sure there are others like me that purchased them only because of the work that the team has done. If you are not happy with your purchase, return it.
Incidentally, to our OUTSTANDING development team. THANK YOU for all your hard work!!!!!!

+1 ... also, this hardware is the bleeding edge for 2011 - kinda cool and not too shabby for a device made in 2010! The amateur devs have done leaps and bounds over thr professionals hired by viewsonic... so for the umpteenth time it will be said in this thread, the gtab will not "die" and its savior(s) are already here working hard on making it all it should be.

The software is actually pretty great and I've only had the device for about two weeks! Thanks to the xda development of course...
The only complaint I might have is with the viewing angles... and that really only bothers me when I try to show the thing to iPad fanboys. The viewing angles really don't bother me much during normal use - just when I try to safe the screen with someone.
I love this tablet have it working great on Vegan the screen could be a helluva alot better but it works and for me the speed and over all performance compensates that.Guys this is bleeding edge technology with more to come but like this evo that I have had since the release everyday it gets better thanks to the developers here!

I just spent the past two days at CES and in fact spent time in the Viewsonic booth.
There are so many tablets on display that one person in my party suggested that if you threw a Coke can 100 feet in any direction you would hit a tablet...
Overall in my opinion on a relative scale the Viewsonic G-tablet is not that bad given everything I have played with. Some other tablets might be a little leaner, maybe a little tighter build quality, but the main difference I see is the display in the Viewsonic.
And yes I did play with the Motorola tablet. While it is leaner and a better built I was shocked on how hot the tablet was when the Motorola person handed it over for me to play with. The G-tablet no matter what I have asked it to do, never gets "hot".
With respect to the Viewsonic tablets introduced at CES, their smaller tablet seems cheep in its constructions. Perhaps that is due to the use of silver colored plastic. And their dual-boot tablet... It was shown running Android 1.6. We asked Viewsonic and were told reboot it to get into Windows. After a power off and power on, I was presented with a boot manager window with Android and Windows as options. But it appeared to be looking for an arrow key press to move the selection bar. Basically I don't think Windows really is useful on the tablet without a keyboard. Perhaps this is why they were showing the tablet with Android. Thus I was never able to get into Windows and try that out.
The RIM tablet is very well built but running QNX. QNX is a realtime operating system and they were in the booth with RIM. QNT is something that is embedded in a product and normally never sees the light of day with respect to the end user. To be honest I worry about the ultimate availability of applications as QNX has nothing to do with Linux, Android, Windows anything, etc. Basically RIM is starting out from scratch. Their user interface is different. Not bad, just different. My opinion, shared with others that I talked with, is that this tablet will appeal to corporations who already have a RIM infrastructure in place and have users complaining they need a tablet. Note that the device on display was WiFi only, where RIM claimed that a unnamed carrier 4G device is near release.
Did you by chance check out the Notion Ink Adam tablet?

Wow! You found better build quality that the gTab? Even my Nook Color seems to have poorer QA as far as actual build goes, and I TRULU expected MUCH better of B&N... defective USB port on my first one OOB, and the casing feels "loose" on returned & exchanged units... however both are better than the Pandigital Novel(white v1) or Augen Gentouch78... although neither of these had defective ports, etc. OOB...
VPAD 10(dual boot one, I presume): Only runs Android 1.6 as it's the latest version that "officially"(?) supports Android for the x86 arch...
To be honest I could find a booth for them and they clearly are not in the show directory. The bloggers are finding them but they have armies of people all over the show floor.

Overall there is a lot of junk Android tablets at the show.
It is notable that when the basic software is the same you have two ways to differentiate product. Industrial design, build quality, etc or a software framework such as TnT. Many products simply do neither.
Another notable fact is most tablets are running v2.2 of Android, even when their writeups for their product cite Android 3.0. I was put off by this.
I returned a NookColor because it developed 16+ hot pixels in the middle of the display. At night on a plane ride they just lit up to the point I decided this is too much it goes back. B&N gave me a lot of trouble returning the device, but after three hours of standing my ground they accepted the return. I decided to take a pass on the NookColor for now. And I agree the USB connector choice could have been much better. Also why go with a unique connector in the first place?
I want to say the coolest phone at the show is the LG Optimus 2X. I want one. NOW. We couldn't get it to lag, even when doing our best to crush it. The display quality is also very good. LG won a best of show award for a display and I think it is the same one used in the 2X.

I may be mis-reading this article:

but it sounds like they (MOTO) were showing a "fake" Honeycomb UI on the Xoom? Maybe that's why it was "unstable" ??

That article was kind of confusing.. Said they were running a fake UI on top of the REAL Honeycomb? How is that any different from running say, Launcherpro on top of Froyo? So we aren't running Froyo if we use a different launcher? Maybe they mean the Motorola specific launcher is unstable, I don't know..
At least they haven't put it up for sale as a totally unstable device like Viewsonic did, yet...
I imagine that by the time people can buy one of those surely overpriced, probably locked down tablets they will have all the kinks worked out. Just seeing the Verizon name makes me not want one.
So would you say the viewing angles of all these new tablets are light years ahead of the Viewsonic, tad better or the same?
Reason why I am asking... Should I wait or not on a G-Tablet with the expectation of upgrading in about 9 - 12 months.

I was a little confused by the article too, which is what I started with "I may be mis-reading...".

I saw that Just a general observation... Guess if it doesn't make sense it must be right! Right?
Well I was at CES also and the only thing I saw for Viewsonic was a little office and I was everywhere. Do you remember where they were? I played with the rim playbook for a bit the interface was nice then I watched for 20 minutes and I didn't see a single crash but I like that when you open different tabs in browser or media you could see all the pages that are open in small windows similar to when you have multiple pages open in Firefox on windows 7 rim playbook is a small platform.

It was basically a demo video of Honeycomb playing in the Android video player in Honeycomb. The actual 3.0 on the Xoom was pretty much unpopulated. Empty screens and almost no apps. The only way to experience it was through the video.
All is very strong. Most of the tablets at the show have a similar display and are no better with respect to the viewing angles.
After talking to the display suppliers it would appear that in general the 10" displays have limited viewing angles (e.g. 90/50 degrees). Smaller panels (e.g. 5" and 7") have much better viewing angles (e.g. 160/140 degrees).
stanglx said:
So would you say the viewing angles of all these new tablets are light years ahead of the Viewsonic, tad better or the same?
Reason why I am asking... Should I wait or not on a G-Tablet with the expectation of upgrading in about 9 - 12 months.

I just saw a post on Anandtech comparing ipad2 and xoom starting a fire-storm of comments. http://www.anandtech.com/show/4216/apple-ipad-2-gpu-performance-explored-powervr-sgx543mp2-benchmarked/1
I looked up the benchmark details for the g-tablet, ipad1 and xoom on GLBanchmark, on cursory examination looks like g-tab compares very well with ipad2 and in some cases out performs ipad2. http://www.glbenchmark.com/compare.jsp?benchmark=glpro20&showhide=true&certified_only=1&D1=ViewSonic%20G%20Tablet&D2=Apple%20iPad&D3=Motorola%20Xoom.
Can somebody cross verify this.
a) I'm not an expert in this field
b) I'm a proud owner of a G-tab so might well be biased .
Note: I have posted a similar comment in anandtech's comment section, but asking it here as this might be a more appropriate forum.
Thanks
What I personally have been seeing, as well as another member on Reddit, the gTab is benching better than the xoom, which would place it still worse than the iPad 2.
Edit: Source link: http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/g3yqw/after_seeing_the_xoom_benchmarks_i_decided_to/
Further edit: Are you looking for a comparison to iPad 2 or the original iPad? You mention both in your post, and the link goes to a comparison against iPad 1.
Sorry for the confusion.
My intended comparison is to ipad2. GLBenchmark still does not have iPad2 in their pull-down selection choices. Anandtech had a table comparing iPad1 & iPad2, so I had to eyeball between the 2 pages and used ipad1 just as a frame of reference.
thanks
No probs. The gTab is fairing well against the Xoom in those benchmarks, but there are some things the iPad can be better at. The gTab doesn't touch the iPad 2 in terms of benchmarks.
To be honest, I wouldn't get bogged down on specifics of benchmarks. While benchmarks can show how well a device can perform, they miss the most important thing. "Does the device work for you?"
Sorry saw the wrong column. yup g-tab no where near ipad2
There are a few things to consider:
The ipad2 is an ipad with a dual core cpu/gpu and 2 cameras, that's really it.
So far, from what I've been reading the ipad 2 graphics whips the tegra 2, however I have no clue how our dual core 1GHz CPU compares to the dual core A5 900Mhz running on the ipad2.
Furthermore, the ipad runs optimized code on optimized hardware...so ios has that bonus over honeycomb in every way. The ipad and ipad2 will always technically SEEM quicker in some respects vs. Android and Honeycomb/Froyo etc. because of that reason alone. Of course, the Gtab is actually faster than the iPad and that's quite visible when running multiple apps or viewing video.
That being said, it really boils down to how their a5 cpu compares to our t2. We know their graphics are faster at the very least. But our CPU may be a bit faster. I'm not speaking in terms of 900Mhz vs. 1Ghz. I'm speaking in terms of the optimized code I'm talking about. The iPad doesn't really need all that much raw power because all the software is optimized to run on it. It's also meant to sip power at that speed. Our t2 sips power by clocking all the way down. Thats the biggest difference.
It could be a situation where apps and cpu intensive processes may start/close and execute etc. quicker/faster for us - but games may look a bit better for the ipad2, as well as swishing around icons and 2D intensive stuff.
If you can put up with itunes, for $100 more you get a tablet that "just works" with a set it and forget it attitude and has 2 cameras. For $399 the G Tablet is a great value and a must have for tinkerers and those who prefer 'freedom' and choice.
Any comparison between both I think will really have to be on a person to person basis at this point; whereas if it were ipad vs. gtab I'd def. recommend Gtab based on power and the ipad based only on a "required" prerequisite of having a "better" screen.
I am not ipad fan as I have ipad for kids and have evo and viewaonic tablet as my android devices.
Love my evo which is the best phone in my opinion, but gtablet does everything well, but the quality of the screen, hardware and thiness of the device and battery life goes to ipad hands down.
Gtablet is really good, but it is heavy and ugly. Apple hardware have always been better looking then their counter part.
I have nice dell xps 1645, but it is still failed in compare to perfectly rectangular MacBook pro which I lust.
It will be always like comparing apple and windows.
Hope honeycomb can close the gap in usability compare to froyo and gingerbread for the tablet.

I don't understand how Apple products gets all the raves. Before I buy anything I always look at Apple and end up buying something else because I find them too low tech. The grayed out OS on the laptops plus the lower than most laptops on the market specs and closed architecture a real turn off on their laptops. I will take a PC any day with any operating system I choose to put on it and I do get that option. For me electronic equipment is all about having options.
The ipad is a real let down. All icandy, after you get past the screen and giant played out icons--what is this the third or fourth year we are seeing them on everything Apple, how much longer will they rock those tired icons? The swipe to the left and right and up and down could hardly compare to a processor running 3D operations. Spinning 3D carousals, live wallpapers and four to five homescreens. No comparison; if that was all the G Tab did, the benchmark scores would be off the charts or any other OS for that matter.
To each his own, just adding to the conversation. I tried to like Apple products but I just don't find them good enough. Who heard of a hard drive you couldn't yank out after purchase and replace with whatever you wanted along with the other components. I guess the Apple prison system is not for me. Don't want to stop anyone else from enjoying though. For me the cons out-weigh the pros.
Stop comparing Apples and Androids!
Version_3 said it correctly. Find out what works for you and use that.
I have both an iPad1 and G-Tab. Both have pluses and minuses.
For "getting things done" I use the iPad. For entertainment and satisfying my inner geek I use the G-Tab.
There is no use in comparing hardware specs since the operating systems on both are so dissimilar. What needs to be looked at is doing what you like in the manner in which you like it. Comparing the "software" against each other is also fruitless since each person interprets how the software works for them.
My personal observations are as follows:
iPad + iTunes = ease of use
G-Tab + ?? = not as easy
G-Tab + Google Apps = Totally awesome
iPad + Google Apps = unimpressive
iPad + App Store = easy to use and solid software
G-Tab + Market = not intuitive and flaky software
Battery Life = iPad
Camera = G-Tab (not too impressive though)
To each his own.
Note - my wife will not even touch the G-Tab since the days of force closing apps... It made a negative impression on her that wont go away soon... She loves the iPad because it "just works". Android needs to figure out a way to overcome those perceptions.

I also have a gTab running VEGAn beta 5.1.1 as well as an iPad 1. I have to say that you and I have opposite uses for our tablets it seems. While you use the gTab for play and your iPad for "getting things done" I find it difficult to use the iPad for work but rather find the gPad (with the ROM and apps I've purchased) much easier to accomplish work on.
As for iTunes... I find with DoubleTwist I can get by just fine on my gTab. The only time I honestly find myself using my iPad (got it for free from work and they pay for the data plan too) is when I want to keep my 20 month old and 4 year old busy with a Netflix video at the table while my wife and I enjoy a nice dinner out. They LOVE Shaun the Sheep and it keeps them mesmerized. Although I can rip those discs and play them on the gTab it's just simpler to stream Netflix on the iPad for them.
Now for the wife... I bought her a Nook Color since most of what she does is read on it. I've also ripped some "chick flick" dvds for her and put it on her Nook Color and it plays them fine too. And of course, with root she got her damn Angry Birds...
Like most electronic devices, both the gTab and the iPad fill different needs for different people. For me, the iPad is a consumer device where the users consume media (as long as it's not Flash) and the gTab (even with it's faults like the screen) allows me to truly leave my 30 pound work laptop (with charger) behind and still get work done.
In the end, like you said, to each his own...
I guess my 2 cents:
*Software optimization*
*Resolutions*
Neither of which the Xoom or G-Tablet have thats helping them in any way. Honeycomb is no where near what I would call optimized. Plus in my mind when I see a benchmark comparing 1440 x 900 to 640 x 480 I'm sure the fps in the lower will be a bit faster. Yes I am android fan but, I can't say that the A5 is bad or the results are totally farce. Time will tell, maybe a few months from now maybe Nvidia / Google will get their crap together before we see the Tegra 3's with the left out hardware.
Plus doesn't the Xoom have 27 native open gl extensions and the gl benchmark only found 21?
Ahhh benchmarks drive me crazy, they start wars.
Speaking of issues such as tap n tap slowing the tablet down to a crawl and FC, viewsonic is not a small company. Why in the world didn't their testers pick these things up?

Excellent question and I went to the tap n tap website which was an eye opener. Why in the world would they choose this for a device with so much hardware promise?
Good thing for them buyers were able to see past the bad decision and look at the big picture.
Software is changeable and hardware, particularly, on a device such as this--meaning tablet--is what it is. What you get, is what you get. Pretty much fixed unless you get into add ons and soldering.
