I bought a Tmo Tab first day they were out but devs could never get phone enabled w/o losing 3G... so I took it back.
Gonna get one of these instead.

Help need with XDA II and GPS

I will soon have my hands a nice new XDA II and I want to use it with a GPS system because I do quite a bit of travelling, UK, Europe, USA and the Middle East, my 1st question is
Should I go with blueTooth, Bearing mind the problems that have been reported with Bluetooth and XDA II???
What is the best system to buy to use with the XDA II, Bluetooth, car powered mouse or CP type????
The only limitations are the following
what ever system I use must be able to be powered from the cigerette lighter as some of my car trips could be up to eight hours, this includes the XDA so twin leads are a must so that I'm able to trickle charge both at the same time
Lastly, I've seen maps available for UK, Europe, USA but not the Middle East, am I missing something, like the GPS systems available here in UK don't work in the Middle East or are no maps are available
Any comments much appreciated by a newbe to XDA II & GPS
Best Regards 2
Go for Bluetooth
I have a bluetooth GPS, and they are better tested then the wired ones, If you buy the software, you get a limited number of maps, if you go to the sellers website, you can download the rest (ofcourse you have to pay a small fee, but they are there), If you find the test, (link somewhere on this forum) you will see that about 95% of them are based on batteries and a wire to the sigarete lighter (so you can choose)
Secondly there are no longer problems with bluetooth, if you download the patch, or have a newer rom version, then everything goes as smooth as a baby
I myself have the NAVMAN, bluetooth, and very happy, but the best tested was the fortuna (i think). actually there was not really a bad one
I would say have fun

Thanks for info lummac, can you advise what 'Navman' version you are using as I've visited there web site and there's couple of GPS's I like but there is no reference to being able to use with the XDA, I've emailed navman tech support, but no reply.
Best Regards

Dont. worry
I still bought the navman 4410, and received the patch from them to get it to work on my MDAII , and gues what, IT WAS TOWAS patch, plus reference to this forum for help.
So that was their official patch. but I had already downloaded the patch before i bought it, works very very good constantly about 7 to 8 satalite connections
And yes at navman they relpy very slow, I only reveived a reply after about 2 weeks.
But If you bought it, and need to have the "official patch" from them, just e-mail me, and I will be more than willing to forward it
If you are using the gps in car only, save money and get a wired system, you still need to power the xda so I see no advantage in having "wireless2 bluetooth.
lummac, Thanks for info about the patch, I might take you up your offer as the one you mention is one of the NAVMAN's I was considering getting, do you know where I can get street maps for the middle east, I only really interested in the UAE.
cruisin-thru, You mention going the wire route, what one do you recommend so I can find more about it,
The main reason for going blue tooth not for wireless but for the fact I don't have to loose one of sockets in the XDA.
Help I've found a Naman 4400
I just located a NAVMAN 4400 all the bits and software, very good price, can I use this one with a XDA II with the Patch?????

My First impressions of Touch Pro w/ picture quality comparisons

Got my pro last week and just wanted to share my observations.
Had the Kaiser before (still do as i still haven't sold it)
Loving this device so far with the stock rom, going to try DCS rom later today. I used throttle launcher with the kaiser so getting to use the real touch flo 3d was a treat. Still have a problem with the audio tab, as it seems to crash when ever i load it.
GPS is a downer so far out of the gate as it took 20 min for me to get a fix yesterday and then i kept losing it (using TT7) gonna try gpsgate for now until that problem is solved.
didn't like the fact that it came with a charger where the cable is also used for pc sync (the kaiser came with a complete charger and a separate usb cable) but I still have a couple of other Usb chargers so its all good.
the nice difference has been the camera. you can see the difference in pictures with the attachments. the touch pro may not have the best video camera in the world by far, but for stills it does a damn good job, better than I have seen before on windows mobile.
usb 2.0 has helped as I lost my first micro sd reader, and then my second one has stopped working.
Keyboard is pretty good. hardware keyboard i still keep missing the "a" button and hitting the caps lock. software keyboard is pretty good sometimes the word suggestion can be annoying especially when spelling names.
if it turns out that this device can get 3g in north america, im laughing. if not, I will be selling it as paying $30 for 6GB of edge data, will not be worth it in IMHO.
left to test: video playback with vga encoded vids and tv out (when i actually purchase the cable)

[Q] Android phone as bluetooth headset?

Ok so this question has been issued 3 times on XDA already, and some more on the net. However, noone, on the entire world, seems to have an idea on what to start with.
Why can't my phone act as a headset (bluetooth)?
An Android phone (but could be another OS) has BT drivers, speaker, microphone... all it needs! I undderstand phones are usually designed to be used with a BT headset rather than as a BT headset, but i see many situation where that could be handy:
- two phones (all calls taken from one)
- calling through computer, but handling the phone
- same through tablet
Now, here on XDA there are all kind of skilled hardcore devs. Why nobody ever got the Android BT driver and apps to turn the phone into a headset? Whyyyyy?
Thanks for reading
because they all bought in-ear bluetooth kits and couldn't be bothered.
Why not just buy a logitech 930 and roam the house? Probably a bit better on the head and if you are friend with Beyonce like me, great to hear in 7.1.
Lol, i wonder why every single thread asking this question always gets the same answer: "why not buy a headset?"
Although i understand what you are meaning, this does not answer the original question
Can someone please answer the actual question with technical details or is this subject cursed for life to getting no answer/off topic answers?
Roam the house? Bluetooth has a very short range.
If someone made android headphones that streamed PC stuff over wireless you'd have a far longer range and much better audio quality.
i really need that.... (why not just buy "BT", very meaningless since you are not understand our situation)
For me, HTC Flyer (tablet) x 1, HTC ChaCha x 1, I have hundreds of BT headsets, but dont you think:
1. extermly trouble every day charging for 3 items?
2. to bring 7" tablet, one cellphone and a bt headset more?
3. *** MAJOR PROBLEM*** i have 1 SIM card only (network and phone), with two mobile... if i can put the SIM into Flyer and pick up the phone from ChaCha that will be wonderful.
Kind of like the above poster I have an Android phone with a no data plan, but I have a galaxy tablet with a tablet data plan
So it is an very troublesome to yell at the tab to talk on Skype or Dell voice or other voip.
It would be very good if I can use my phone to act as the headset
I do not want to hang a Bluetooth headset on my ear
So...anyone has any idea?
Hi,
there is a solution you can use the samsung galaxy player 3.6 device with android 2.3.6.
It is a multimedia player not a smartphone but it has the BT profile so you can use it also as a headset for your phone or tablet and it works really great.
It can be a nice add-on for a tablet or an oversized telephone.

Anyway this could be ripped out of a ROM for that device and made to work on others?
darn what a dissapointment to notify that it will not work.
I wanted to keep my work phone and private phone sepparated but picking up all calls with my private phone while no one knows my private number seems so great...
any news on this??

Word from Acer, A700 does not support WiFi Direct and they have no plans to do so.

Wow.
I don't understand how they can be so dismissive of a fundamental feature of ICS.
Just use a program like this since its a huge issue for you....
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...NtYXJ0ZXJkcm9pZC53aWZpZmlsZXRyYW5zZmVycHJvIl0.
Like you, I'm learning to make sure the devices I buy support what I want before I buy 'em...
Excite 7.7 - well, this one wasn't my fault. Engadget's review said it supported video out. (Shoot, still says it has mini-hdmi even though I e-mailed them over a week ago to fix it.)
Acer a700 - Ethernet over USB doesn't work.
< shrugs shoulders, sighs................... / >
As a developer I have purchased many products to use for development purposes. That is my intent. I need several devices which support WiFi Direct so that I can test software that uses WiFi Direct.
I will get the job done using other devices.
My issues is two fold, a) why was WiFi Direct so prematurely announced and b) I was really hoping that the A700 was a better tablet that it is turning out to be. What is wrong with wanting a device that has ALL the bases covered?
Nothing wrong with wanting that, but yeah, it seems like every time a tablet comes out there's SOMETHING I want missing...
excite 7.7 - video out, density set WAY too high, slow updates
verizon 7.7 - my favorite but still on honeycomb
acer a700 - no usb ethernet
nexus 7 - haptic feedback, video out, micro sd, doesn't do landscape in launcher (WTF?)
I'm still waiting for the perfect tablet.
Do ANY Android tabs support ethernet over USB out of the box? Not heard of any, offhand.
My Transformer Prime did.
Very convenient for hotel rooms, areas where wireless isn't available, etc.
Is wifi direct a hardware function or is it possible to implement it in software?

It's a hardware function, but our hardware does support it, it only lacks the software part.

Two questions about the tablet

Hi,
I've been (unsuccessfully) trying to find answers to these questions on internet:
1. Can you buy TF700 WITHOUT dock keyboard ? It looks like all shops only selling it with docks. Can any one give me a link to a shop that sells it without a dock ?
2. Is there a version of tablet that supports 3G ? I read somewhere around announcement time that Asus might release such version. Is it out yet ?
1) Yes, there are plenty of people here mentioning buying the tablet without a dock. (Mostly US-based) Since I don't know what country you're in, I can't provide a useful link. International import rules and all.
2) The current version is the TF700T, which is WiFi only. The TF700KL is the LTE 3G/4G version, and as always is released a year or some later. So far all I've heard is my neighbours running a speedtest on the KL. (That would be Germany.) Try looking again somewhere around Christmas.
Keep in mind that the 3/4G edition does not pack the NVIDIA® Tegra® 3 Quad-core [email protected] 1.6GHz, but instead has the lower-range Qualcomm® MSM 8260A Snapdragon™ S4 Krait Dual-core 1.5Ghz.

Thanks for info !
I'm actually from the Netherlands as well
Aw, sh*t you're a few days late. Media Markt had the WiFi version included in the 19% BTW sale last week, which saved €111 and thus the entire dock was free.
It's not for sale here without the dock. As usual, our 'lovely' shops are trying to scam us out of our money in the fastest way possible... (It's $300/€232 in the US, why €700 here?!)
However, if you're near the german border, Germany (Saturn, Media Markt) sells the WiFi version it without the dock.

The tablet without the keyboard is available in the USA. What the keyboard brings to the tablet is rather unique though. First it brings the ability to actually type on a keyboard for entry of information. Second it brings a real USB port for such things as a mouse, external hard drive, memory sticks, and game controlers. Third it brings a true SD card slot for extended on board memory. Fourth but not by any means least it brings an extra battery. While the tablet is attached to the keyboard the tablets battery will be recharged by the battery in the keyboard. This takes place when the tablet battery gets below 70%. At that point the keyboard will start recharging the tablet battery. This way your tablet will always have at least 70% of its battery left. This charging will continue to take place until the keyboard battery has been exhausted. I actually have purchased an additional keyboard dock for my TF700T. One keybaord dock remains attached to an AC power supply waiting to be used and the other keyboard remains attached to my tablet. This way I get the maximum use from my tablet at any point in my day.
