Does anyone know if it will be possible to upgrade the firmware for the bt radio so it can run bt3.0? Is there a way to know what chip it uses (if its the same as galaxy we would be in luck).
Honestly I prefer 2.1. Too many complaints about 3.0's lack of support for bluetooth devices like Wiimote
I don't have a Galaxy S but it should use a TI wilink chipset, that supports bt3.0.
_Maybe_ they used in the Nexus S a bcm432* family chipset that is bt3.0 certified although it supports bt2.1 only.
This is just a speculation, i think you have to wait until the phone is out

It was just like the G2 I was *****in about 800mhz and the hinge and such but it turned out to be great so I for sure will give this phone a chance!!
I asked our BT lead, and his understanding is that the BCM4329 is not supported for BT3.0 from Broadcom, so it is unlikely we'll be able to upgrade to 3.0 on Nexus S.

The G2 was super sluggish on the home screen (completely stock). This thing is lightyears ahead of G2.

Well the FM parts are not locked, just lacking drivers and audio passthrough in the software. Should most likely be possible to enable FM they way it's done in CM and MIUI (based on the code in CodeAurora originally).

My guess whould be they ran out of 3.0 modules....another theory is that 2.1 has better support and less likely not to work. One of my bt devices didn't work on 3.0 but this thread reminded me to chec again....and now it works fine maybe because of new firmware

I bought the Universal a month...I have read a bit and more..I found that the MSM6250 Chip set by Qualcomm that is in the Universal is a bit more robust then we are lead to believe.....It comes manufactured as a Quad Band phone but marketed as a Triband phone, WHY ? It also supports UMTS 2100 MHz and ALSO the 1900 MHz ....But again marketed as only for the UMTS 2100Mhz in Europe ! Why ? ...I also found that it has a built in GPS receiver known as the gpsOne processor ! but marketed without mentioning this ! Why ? below are 2 interesting links that shed light on the situation....NOW, my question is.....from reading...Is that all this can be activated if you know how to mess with the "guts" of the Universal not the internal guts but the Registry, cab files, etc...Is it possible that someone here knows how to achieve this...If so...Please HELP..It would be nice to make use of the missing GSM850 band and the missing UMTS 1900 MHz !

Now, we know for a fact that the Universal doesn't support USB host functionality because of missing wires.
Some of the pins that should be connected, are not.
It is allso missing circuitry "fuses" for powering the USB peripherals..
The Universals chipset supports a lot of things, but the Universal does not.
And it's not just software limitations.
As for the quad VS triband issue; could it be the antennas?
Or could it be licencing issues?
Is it definately UMTS 1900? Not GSM 1900.. which is one of the settings?

Bonzo has stated very good points......I can only hope that through more reading and studying of these chipsets I'll be able to figure something out that is useful for all of the Universal owners.....I think that it's more of just getting the word around that the chips are packed with more than it was advertised with ! I know it seems like another "Conspiracy theory" but I am convinced that someone will be able to crack this nut... Being a newbie to all of this I am amazed at the sort of things that folks on this forum have already figured out and I'll do my best to contribute as the weeks go on ! The Universal deserves to have all of its intended functionality up and running, and Oh I'd like to have this functionality after dropping 900 bucks on it ! Triband VS Quadband in the Universal
Regarding the Quad/Tri issues, I do believe that I have read something about licensing costs in the past.
The producer pays licence costs for the use of most of the technologies in a device.
This means that if every phone was Quad instead of triband, there would be a considerably larger licensing cost for HTC.
The HTC Himalaya is Dual or Tri band (I don't remember) but the hardware supports Tri or Quad band (One more than the specs claim).
To make it work on the last band, you have to flash it with a different radio stack. (Use an American Radio Stack on a European device for example)
I think that was explained by licensing costs.
If we had a genoius coder or very potent insider amongst us, it would theoretically be possible to write a new radio stack and make use of all four bands in the Universal.

I have been reading the replies regarding the various suggestions that people have posted regarding the radio upgrades, licensing issues etc.....Regarding the Upgrade to the radio, I have read that an upgrade can make the voice quality more clear, reception of signal strong, etc...Are we talking about the same radio functionality (registry files, cab files, or ??? ) that would perhaps be used in the UMTS or GSM band; Because if so...I would venture to say this is where a "tweak" or "upgraded" needs to be performed ! From reading there are already some "radio upgrades" available for the Universal, Do these upgrades deal with the trasmitting/band operations, I think it this is the question to be answered.

When rebooting, you'll see three ROM versions in red letters, bottom right.
The top line says something like "R 1.09" or 1.06 or something..
It is this part of the ROM that I'm referring to, allso known as RSU (Radio Stack Upgrade).
If a Universal is ever released on the Singular 1900 UMTS network, we can all use our Universals there, if we flash our ROMs first..
If not, someone will have to modify an exisiting RSU file.
I imagine that to be almost as hard as modifying your Win XP install CD files to support Mac OSX software..

Over on the Open Embedded Software Foundation, a group of us are working on a device called the "PocketPenguin." Alot of it is based on the Universal, and on the Sharp Zaurus SL-3200. . It's sort of a hybrid between the two. Yes, it's a phone. We're trying to get Quad Band GSM and at least one UMTS network band.
Inside the Radio Rom:
The GSM Stack which includes Basic Protocols, Network Encryption (The REALLY hard part) and the serial command interface.
The same for 3G. The worst part is the fact that the Universal's Qualcomm Unit is not only connected via Serial like the BlueAngel (Hence the Plug-And-Play Phone under linux on the BA) but shares data over one of the PXA270's USB Host Ports.
So to get a new Radio ROM, you need to license a new GSM stack, a new UMTS stack, and crack the Serial/USB interface protocols that links it. Then port and code and link it all together.
$300 Ain't gonna do it. :lol:

Didn't quite get the question.. Was it about service provider? I yes, it works with both Russian WiMAX providers (Yota and Comstar). There is no need in SIM card, autentification is based on cards MAC address. So the point is to make this card actually work and be identified by OS
I too am in moscow with the verizon xoom! Sadly, yota is on the wrong bands for the wimax that will be available for update from moto for everyone else, but it would be interesting if we could install our own hardware and drivers, so we dont have to use a hotspot when theres no free wifi.

at this point, such a task is impossible. You would have to build an additional framework of massive proportions similar to how #teamwin ported wimax to cyanogenmod on the Evo. There are few in the world that good. In addition, we don't even have hc source, nor will we for the foreseeable future. Sorry guys, dead in the water. At least you can enjoy my Tiamat series kernel.

Verizon's Xoom does not do WiMax. You meant LTE, which will be on the 700mhz band. WiMax is on 2.5ghz band.

Nope, he didn't mean LTE. We're talking about inserting additional card (intel 5150 in this case) into mini-pci slot that is reserved for Verizon LTE upgrade. I've got an answer from some linux guru in which he said that Android WiMax stack isn't implemented yet

So any new owners of the international S3 4G/LTE (GT-I9305), Australian or otherwise, who have been eager to root may have google it, and come up with the post at http://www.trickytweaks.com/how-to-root-s3-i9305-4g-xxali4-4-1-1-jelly-bean-australian.html - and against their better judgement (and lack of other options since the phone's release is so limited thus far), been tempted to give it a shot hoping that it was accurate.

The page gives fairly detailed instructions (albeit in broken english) stating that CF-Root 6.4 works a treat. The model number is listed specifically, and the instructions are fairly complete - surely it must be correct!.. Nope. Multiple bricked devices that I'm aware of (mine being amongst them).
This thread posted as a warning to anyone who may consider it, and hopefully finds this first as comments on the "instruction" page aren't being posted (awaiting moderation). It's being discussed in a few other threads - a dedicated thread is just to increase visibility to anyone who may search.
No comments pointing out how silly it was to attempt are necessary as anyone who's attempted it are already painfully aware
Update 28/09 - The page that this warning was about has been removed, and a working root method has been posted (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1906351), so this thread is now redundant. While I haven't personally tried the new root method yet (a bit gun shy since my previous rooting attempt!), multiple other users have posted that it works.
The people that write for that site are retarded, we've known this for a while now.

The thing is that the lte band adopted by my country's carriers, at least until now, is the 800Mhz band so the 9305 won't work, I believe. So the korean version, k210s, would work because it's lte band is also 800Mhz. What I would like to know from you owners is if its indeed faster and smoother than the international version. For instance, what is your stock rom quadrant benchmark score? What about hspa+ speed test, what are your results?

the korean version is thicker as it has a dmb antenna that slides out of it, pretty ugly when its out actually seen in a few pics.
The GT-i9305 use the frequencies 800 Mhz 1800 Mhz 2600 Mhz you can use it in all Europe
The GT-i9305T use only the frequencies 1800 Mhz and 2600 Mhz not work on 800 Mhz

Thanks, I didn't even know that there are 2 versions of the 9305. Just a correction, the 9305 does not use the 1800 Mhz z frequency. Also thank you for the explanation on the different bands. Do you know where we can buy the gt-i9305 unlocked?

I wouldn't take the pdadb.net specs as gospel - the i9305T isn't available yet, and it's unlikely (based on existing i9xxx versus i9xxxT models) that an entire band would not be supported in the T.

Samsung repair centre says that it needs hardware replaced. Not too sure of the details (since other phones can apparently have the iemi restored with software).
I guess I just wait and see..
Are you able to go to Download mode and reflash the stock rom? There seems to be some chance of restoring corrupted IMEI like what this guy did (http://srjraman.wordpress.com/2012/04/07/recover-fake-imei-and-restore-original-efs-galaxy-s/), though it was for the original SGS.
@kahjuay: Yep - stock rom was reflashed through Odin, but EFS was toast - iemi showed up as "null/null".. Mine went back to Samsung and they're fixing it. They've said that it needs the mainboard replaced, and they're currently waiting on parts.. For some reason, they're doing it under warranty, so I'm not going to argue as to whether it's a software or hardware fix

That didn't answer any of the questions. The korean version is thicker but has the same quadcore 2GBram & LTE so it must be very similar but would like to know It's performance from a real owner.
i've created a custom rom that will give you root (but NO other customizations) on the i9305 (australia - optus)
will post it + a tutorial soon, so if anyone else is looking to do this, please wait. Don't try any other method at this stage. I've spend ages resarching and eventually created my own.

Oh man that's great news! Fantastic work. Just got an i9305 and been hanging to root it.
You need to wait for some one to have side by side or just watch the YouTube video like most of us had watched comparing the Korean performance to international one

There are no bugs in the radio, and definitely not of that kind.
If you're not getting 3G - it can be your carrier, your settings and your phone HW (very unlikely). Radio is out of the question. This is why the general guideline says - leave the radio alone.

i was reading a post about the GPS Problems comes with that radio versions, i thought that would mess the 3G thing with this..
GPS problems are also unrelated to radio on MT4G, as on most current phones. "Radio" only controls the baseband - cellular operations, the other connectivity devices aren't controlled by it.

My carrier and the 3g network its the same 900 so why in tha... I dont go 3g .... This its making me crazy I bough a phone that has the same network but doesn't go 3g

No, but it's very possible that you didn't read the MT4G specs and don't know that it DOESN'T support 900 MHz band. So you won't get 3G on it, no matter what you try.

I've searched for 3 days now, trying to get some info on this, there are various discussions on xda and on other sites that come along the same line, most of the answers are:
No it can't be done - it's hardware related - there are different variants for each region (seems this is not the case with the ONE)
You need someone with QPST but it probably can not be done.
But there is none that actually clears it up, it's mostly "I think it is...................."
What I found out is that the chip regulating 4G LTE connectivity on all HTC one variants is the same (600 MHz Hexagon QDSP6V5A part of the MSM8974 chip and it can sport the ALL LTE frequencies), so it is not a hardware difference between the EMEA and the Verizon, now the question is do I need someone with this QPST or will it only be a case of changing the baseband - all this, is my own conclusion, feel free to give me feedback on this
now on the Verizon site LTE spec says:
Network: LTE Band 13/4 (700/1700 MHz)
CDMA/1xEVDO Rev. A (800/1900 MHz)
the HTC site for Verizon says 4G LTE:
EMEA: 800/900/1800/2600 MHz
Verizon: 700/AWS/1800/2600 MHz
Yet I still don't get any 4G
Sadly there is so much info and it's hard to follow it all. So please can someone explain what and how things actually work?

Cause I have a Verizon m8 and I'm using it in Europe and I can't get 4G - atm I'm using Insertcoin with ElementalX 8.0.5 kernel and everything is working on the phone aside 4G - I flashed various roms on it, never had ANY problem, aside small things that a Google search solved.
Anyone that can enlighten me? Any help would be appreciated.

Each model must have a different *antenna* configuration so that they are optimized to their respective regions. The *antenna* is separate from the actual radio you mentioned above. This is why there are so many models, which I thought I had explained in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2710720&page=5
Even if you could override what band the phone connected to, the performance would be abysmal. The fix for this would be to physically change the antenna. If you could do this on your own, you deserve an honorary degree in electrical engineering since antenna design isn’t the easiest thing in the world. Since there is a discrepancy between the Verizon and HTC spec sheets, I would do the following:
1.) Focus your research on seeing which one is correct by contacting HTC and Verizon.
2.) If Verizon’s is correct, you’re done. Romania’s carriers only transmit LTE on 1800 Mhz (band 3). Otherwise…
3.) If HTC’s sheet is correct, focus on why you can’t detect 1800 MHz. It must be something in your unlock method or Verizon really locked the hell out of the radios for some reason.

Cheers mate, went to an actual engineer that handles repairs here in Romania for various brands and we both decided to make it our own personal project to make this happen a Verizon M8 turned into a Euro version one, ill report back with the results in about 2 weeks. Seems technically it can be done, just needs a some work. Thanks again for the reply though.

That's actually kind of admirable! Seriously, I wish you luck; it would be really awesome if you succeeded. If you begin making progress, I would love to hear about it!

Hi Macusu,
Just to remember, I believe the problem is not only related to the antenna itself, maybe there are other kind of locks since, as discussed in the other topic, Here in Brazil and I`m not being able to attach it to 4G 2600MHz (Even if the phone supports this frequency).

Thing is they are waiting for all the tools atm, I mean they don't yet have all the new kits for it, it should be arriving, and the engineer is actually a certified person being one that works in a certified HTC service, so once we get the entire .... kit, he will start working on it toghther with the software engineer and so on, hope that it will all sort out, i did get another phone in the mean time as well, but as i said i will be reporting back.

So would I...I'm also from Brazil and brought the Verizon model because it is said to support the 2600 frequency. So frustrating
