Gingerbread Keyboard - Captivate General

Am using it on my Captivate running Axura RC1.
Flash it through CWM.
It was forwarded to me. I don't think it'll work on 2.1, but I am not 100% sure. Working fine on 2.2 Captivate though.
As always, use at your own risk.
Edit: It will take over the stock Android keyboard btw. If anyone can post the APK for the current 2.2 stock keyboard I'll include it in this post.

Sorry, I put it on my external SD card, instead of my internal one!
That didn't work either...

Seriously? Make it easy on yourself. Take this apk, put it on your phone, install it like you would any other app.
And this one DOES NOT take over the stock Android keyboard.

ClockworkMod 2.5.1.2 (?)
Sorry i'm not really sure how to check that... I'm new to do the whole Android software (coming from Iphone).
I know I'm rooted and am on Froyo 2.2 Baseband version I897UJI6

I just downloaded the .apk from one of the above posts and then pushed it with android app installer via adb - then go into my mms - long press and select input method, there it is.... no messing with root explorer or cwm.... just pushed it and used it.

There's your problem. If the ROM you are running is the leaked version of Froyo we got, the vibration feature just doesn't work. It's next to impossible to get working without editing some key files.

Here's directions, good luck with it.
In LatinIME.smali there is a "vibrate" method defined inside there. Add a call to setHapticFeedbackEnabed and set it to the value stored in the preferences for vibrate. Then the performHapticFeedback is called. Then add setHapticFeedbackEnabled.

Seems easy enough, so I will try that tonight. Though one question I do have is, what ROM do you think is the best? Which one would you recommend for me?

I'm using Cognition 3.04 with voodoo enabled like it says in my signature and I love it. Its an amazing ROM and I can always go into the IRC channel if I come up with a question or want someone's opinion on a mod. I can also tell you that Phoenix Rising is another stupendous ROM as my sister has that on her Captivate and hasn't complained about anything. If anything I think Phoenix maybe be faster overall but that's probably heavily due to the fact that it runs the speedmod kernel. But its easy enough to flash that while using Cognition.

Okay I am installing Cognition 3.04 right now, just a quick question though out of curiosity, why do you have to downgrade to Eclair from Froyo to install a ROM?

It's not necessarily a downgrade to Eclair. When you have you phone set back to a "fresh, out of the box" state, there's less of a chance of something going wrong or interfering with the install.

Honestly, why bother with official 2.2 update? There are several outstanding froyo roms out there and they're so, so easy to flash right now, I'd guess you run a greater risk of bricking your phone messing with Ota or kies (although I can't say for sure, since I never bother flashing stock 2.2).
Just browse dev. section.

If the phone is freezin and you haven't done anything to it. It might be a good idea to take it back and get a new one before you do anything. Flashing a custom rom might take care of the problem or there might be something broken hardware wise.
You don't really need to root the device in order to flash it. But, I think it's good to learn how to do it, anyway. I think there are some basic skills everyone should know before flashing the phone:
- different ways to get into recovery and download mode;
- how to use odin;
- how to issue adb commands;
- how to root and install clockworkmod recovery;
- what's a jig and how to make it;
Among other things. Even though, you can flash most roms just by naming the zip file update.zip and using 2e recovery.

^ What he said. READ READ READ and then READ some more.
After you understand what you are doing, I'd recommended flashing one of the Android 2.2.1 "FroYo" i9000 ROMs with an appropriate i9000 reoriented kernel and modem.
CM7 (Android 2.3.3 "Gingerbread") isn't quite ready for a beginner user to flash yet, and the same goes for the beta 2.3.3 i9000 based ROMs beginning to float around the Captivate Development section.
IMHO, you'll find your phone responds much faster with FroYo, you'll get better battery life, and access to a wider range of apps in the market (since many require 2.2+). Not to mention some other goodies like Flash 10.2, Voice Search, and the latest versions of Google Maps and GMail.
For more info on the differences between Android versions, and whether or not you'll get more out of your phone, check out the Wikipedia article on Android versions.

All Infused v2 releases were pulled temporarily by gtg, with the exception of a 2.0.3 test release halfway through the thread which is still available I think. (However it's at this point an unsupported "use at your own risk" release. If you haven't found it on your own it's probably not for you...)
It has always been possible to flash without ROM manager, in fact in my opinion flashing through ROM Manager seemed more likely to fail.
THANK YOU
"All Infused v2 releases were pulled temporarily by gtg"
Why?
Also, since I just got my infuse today, and I have the time, should I try a different ROM (if there are any) that is recommended? I will try anyone that is better than the stock one.
That being said, I am the kind of person who prefers speed (!) above anything else (looks and effects and whatnot)

Well then the Gingerbread ROMs are not for you. The Rogers RIL seems to have data speed issues on the AT&T network. I'm happy with it as I live in the boonies and don't see 4G speeds anyway and probably won't until I'm due for a phone upgrade - I bought the phone for the nice screen.
This issue and poor user attitude are why gtg pulled the ROMs for a while. They are back, but the mods are paying MUCH closer attention to the thread this time.

[Q] Help with Gingerbread installation...

Okay I literally just got this phone yesterday and I see all this talk about Gingerbread and how great it is so I decided I want to try it. I know next to nothing about all the technicalities about this phone so I youtube'd how to do it and found this video that I plan to use to help me in the process. - watch?v=YuURgkUYn1A
So if I follow that process and use the files he uses, I should have Gingerbread and still have my connection to AT&T, GPS, and WiFi? Also, when AT&T finally does release it officially, will I be able to just go to Software Update on the menu and get the official AT&T Firmware and not have to worry about all this technical stuff again?

Try THIS link out, its got pretty much everything you want to know to get started(including vids). The only things that don't work on GB currently HDMI and on some of the roms, bluetooth. If you want to get the official OTA when it drops you will have to go back to stock, easiest way is to use THIS method. Also when GB does drop, Devs most likely will make their own roms based on the official GB.
Once your rooted and have recovery installed use THIS thread to find the ROM you want...
This is just a rough overview, so make sure you READ carefully and take your time, any question you have is usually answered in the appropriate thread.
Here is a link to the latest AT&T Gingerbread leak. Use Odin to flash it, and if you stick with the included stock kernel, everything works as it should. It looks very close to being ready for release. If you want it rooted, flash Entropy's kernel and then use CWM recovery and the Superuser zip you can find on here to install su. Then, flash the stock kernel again to keep everything working (video, bluetooth, etc.).:

That's legit Dman, it seems you learn a new trick on a daily basis; ports, roms and now kernels. I'm loving how the infuse development is still kickin!
So back on topic lol. Xia, Dman's CatyRom is one of the most recent GB roms (and plenty more), it's based off of the leaks from At&t. Once your ready, look into that!
Edit: Nevermind my question, dman, thanks anyway for what you're doing.
To the OP, a good AOSP Gingerbread rom that I keep coming back to is Serendipity VII. I hope that MikeyMike will still come back to update that one when we get the official AT&T Gingerbread.

After going back to Froyo?
went back to froyo myself, I couldn handle it missing letters and being non responsive...it was driving me crazy.
Back to good ole 2.2.1 again, which to me out of every rom, is the most stable (no lockscreen lag, responsive, good battery life, fully functioning, no randon battery drains, etc...)
Ive tried just about every rom on here, and sadly I go back to froyo, stock.
There are some great roms on the forum, but my 2 main things are touch response / system quickness and battery life.

+1. Back on rooted, stock froyo. It just works.
Where did you get the Froyo download? The gtg thread d/l isn't working for me.
Edit .... got one.

Yes. The screen was more responsive after going back to Froyo using GTG's Unbrick. I then ran SuperOneClick, copied the modified 3e recovery over, installed CWM, then updated my modem to UCKH1.

You could also download h8rift's stock ROM which includes root and the modified 3e recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14053463&postcount=1
I chose to use GTG's Unbrick because it repartitions the phone but it may not be necessary.

Do you mind posting a copy of your framework res apk? (from stock of course)
I'd PM you, but I don't think you can send attachments.

Lol. Considering my afternoon, I am not a miserable person. It's just unnecessary to clog the forums with meaningless posts.

Well, the touch sensitivity is back .... Can you download that one update (not the gingerbread, the small one before)? & my texts were doing right then it started listing all his bubbles & then all my bubbles instead of in the order they come in.
Won't be happy with that.
FWIW, I flashed DMANs ZEUS GB rom, and had signifigant lag until I went back to GoLauncher.
Snappy.

Are you talking about the OTA update to UCKH1?
If so here's the post with the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17629885&postcount=63
Unrar then use Odin to flash the tar.

[Q] Can I just flash EagleBlood ICS 4.0.4?

I meant to say 4.0.3. I want to flash EB ICS 4.0.3. Right now I have EagleBlood 1.0.9. Im not sure what CM7 and ICS is or if I need anything special to flash them.
1)Can I just flash them like I did with the Rom I have?
2)And what is the GAAPS download?
3) Is AOSP 4.0.4 better than ICS 4.0.3?
you seriously need to read more and search more before messing with your phone, I'm terrified right now for you. What I just read reminded me of my first time driving a stick at 14 years old, and the cops had to come get me off a suspended bridge via helicopter. Please just back away from the phone and read.

Thanks for all your help. Anyone else?
I'm always for helping people, but I honestly have no idea how you got around to installing a custom ROM in the first place. I say this because based on your questions, you don't know what you're talking about.
I honestly recommend you stay with the ROM you have. I promise you when I say that it is going to have more functionality than what you are trying to install.
Wipe your cache and follow the directions in that topic (which are probably just flash).

What I am asking is: Is this ICS Rom the same as all the other Roms posted on this site? I know how to flash a Rom and follow the directions. I just want to know if ICS and CM7 Roms are a whole new world or not? Can I just flash like any other ROM, is this question really breaking the bank?

Kinda... Google search ics watch YouTube videos, you easily could've read all the info by now lol. Its not fully working read what's broken first, you can read it in almost any first post of rom thread.

CM = CyanogenMod ... They're kind of a big deal.
CM7 = 2.3+ = Gingerbread
CM9 = 4.0+ = Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS)
This may help you a little.
Actually, it should help you a lot.
And when you first flashed your Eaglesblood rom, what was the criteria you were looking for?

In a short answer, yes. You can flash any ICS, Gingerbread, Froyo ROMs like anything else. Most, if not all the devs have instructions on how to flash their ROM and/or addons in the OP of the thread.
Hope this helps

Hello everybody, I am very new to this and I am trying to install the Eagles blood 4.0.4 ROM. When I get to the step where you use the "one click recovery flasher" I get the "boot loader failed" error below. I get the S/W upgrade on the screen but when I hold the vol down + power i get the box with the lid open and the arrow like its updating instead of the blue LG logo. I have tried it a few times and i get the same thing. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for the help.

Not only that, but every ICS ROM has a link to the GAPPS right next to the download link for the ROM. Sounds like he hasn't even read the thread for any ICS ROM.
I'm a noob. Had my phone rooted for a month before I flashed anything. Read, read, amf read some more before I flashed my first ROM (HFS 1.4) and all my questions were answered by reading prior to flashing and it really is simple enough that anyone SHOULD be able to do it without asking questions... Especially since you can get your questions answered in the first amd last few pages of any thread...
