CM or TNT or ZPad? - G Tablet General

Which one do you guys think is the most stable, fastest, and better?
I just got my GTablet, Completely NEW to Android, I did flash it with the TNT 2.2.0
I frking love this thing now, so happy I didn't buy the iPAD.
But on the TNT I do get some random, once in a while Force Closes (FC) and if I don't touch the system for a but, it just shuts off on me. Then when i press the power button thinking it'll come out of sleep, its a cold boot.
Whats everyones opinions of ZPAD, TNT, and CM verses each other? Which one is better in YOUR opinion.

I think a better comparison for you would be if we could list the Cons for each ROM. Each of the 3 ROMs have boat-loads of Pros (just saving space, not being a negative nancy ).

I have to say that TnT lite 2.20 seems super smooth and stable. CM and Zpad both had too many bugs for me when I tried them about a week ago. I would specify the problems, but I don't recall exactly for either Zpad or CM.

Viewsonic told me that there is a major upgrade coming on Dec 19. The gTablet will automatically alert you to its availability for download.

Should I go from TNT Lite to Vegan???

I have been using TntLite 2.4 (waiting for 3.1) and like the way it's been working. However, it seems like the majority on this forum is currently using Vegan Rom.
Do you guys know something I don't ?
What is the main difference and why did you choose Vegan over Tnt lite?
I was under the impression that Vegan was more in the beta stage and Tnt was more stable.

TnT Lite still has the overhead of the TnT framework(settings application, status bar). I think people get a little better responsiveness from Vegan. It is just a little bit closer to stock android. Additionally there have been some nice visual tweaks to Vegan with the gingerbread animations. That is why we advocate for using clockwork...you can try it and go back to what you had in a matter of minutes.
I've used both. VEGAn seems faster, but I believe that is primarily due to the screen effects on that ROM. Both roms score ~2400 on quadrant.
TnTLite is more stable (based on my experience). Don't get me wrong; VEGAn is a great rom, but it is in beta, and it's still plagued by a bunch of nit-noid issues (slow downs, processes stopping, etc.).
TnTLite is based off of TnT, so its foundation is a bit stronger. I haven't had a single issue with any version of TnTLite. Some folks have hiccups with installing the rom (this applies to any rom), but once loaded, TnTLite can be used as a daily driver by your mother. All joking aside, that's why I moved back off VEGAn to TnTLite....I'm giving the tablet as a gift and there's no way my father could troubleshoot the problems VEGAn still has.
VEGAn still uses a dual-core capable kernel like TNT does, right?

Vegan is basically the Advent Vega ROM with the gut of TnT. It has the TnT kernel, and a good bit of the libraries, etc.
Why not try both? The both have their pros and cons, so if you use something like clockworkmod you can try both and back them up as you flip between the two.
I personally use VEGAn more than TnT Lite now, but everyone has their own requirements.
Yeah, I started with TNT, then when to Vegan Beta 1, then back to TNT, then to Vegan beta 3. Been on that for a couple of weeks and am really liking it. I am tossing around the idea of going to TNT lite 3 because I like the transparent task bar. Been trying to theme Vegan for it, but can't get the worked out. Anyway, it's all a matter of preference really. They both are very good and usable.
I switrched to VegaN from TNT Lite.
I like it a little more than TNT
One thing that bugs me about Vegan is the microsd can not be unmounted and is not visible in the system settings.
I appreciate that people may think that Vegan is less stable, but think Tap UI adds its own stability issues and is a root cause of issues- even with 3.0.
VS would be FAR better off simply adding a basic UI layer for hardware and chipset drivers and stick with a vanilla 2.2. Tap UI should be treated as a sunk cost and VS should just get away from it.
added:
This device would have been HUGE if released as mentioned. Then again, we would then have no Fantastic Four to mingle with..... Maybe the way things happened, forced a need for a quicker dev path and it is all for the better for modders? Selfish of me- I agree.
I tried both and vote for Vegan. Afaik, TnT doesn't support USB mice/keyboards so that was the icing on the cake for me.

Long Live Vegan Tab

For anyone using tnt or tnt lite I pity you... Vegan tab is so superior... No more slowdowns, lost data, random FCs... To anyone out there on the fence about gtablet, try vegan, you wont regret it...
I've done both, but there are thing I like about TnT Lite better. So I think it comes down to a personal preference. The only for sure answer though is to root the g Tablet and let this thing fly.
Yeah I've tried both and at the moment tnt lite is running better for me. Just a couple things I like better about tnt lite. I'm sure once Vegan Tab is out of beta it will be stronger than ever ;-)

It'd be interesting to have a features comparison of the main ROMs and a comparison of the things they add. I realize it's mostly personal preference, but it still would be a big help.
For me vegan tab rocks and thanks to the people here at this forum that have worked out the kinks and this thing is awsome.

I wouldn't go so much and say I "pity" people who have tnt or tnt lite. I like the Vegan ROM because it resembles more of stock android. Both ROMs are awesome.
I guess it's a matter of opinion what you think is a better ROM. I'm just glad we gtab owners have choices so early in the development.
I've used both as well. Started with TnT version 2.x, moved to VEGAn beta 3 and was very happy and stable there with only minor occasion screen noise issues - Moved to Beta4 and had nothing but problems so I decided to tried TnT again and now am on Ver 3.0.
Question if anyone knows the answer: Is there a "lock" function in TnT? Can't seem to find one... one more question, is there a way of accessing account sync for Google in TnT? Cant seem to find that either. One observation, VEGAn had superior settings options it seems. Thanks
I like the feel of VegaN better than tnt lite. I also like the ability to change the keyboard but beta 4 has some issues with performance so I moved the tnt 3.1.2 for now. I can say it has been performing flawlessly since installed, I just wish I could find an easy way to swap keyboards.
I'll tell you, TNT Lite 3.12 is fraught with peril IMO... I had the following issues all fixed with Vegan tab:
1. Could not side load apps (kept saying it was blocked and directing me to settings that were not available in TNT lite 3.12... The setting is there in Vegantab. Load apps from unknown sources something or other...)
2. Reboot loop after resetting user data / clearing cache..
3. Unexplained slowness after and hour or two of use... (That hour or two included sleep)
4. Unreliable video / audio playback. Sometimes it worked great other times static / choppy playback...
5. Wake from power button resulted in dialog to sleep, power off, etc... Vegan tab wakes to a nice lock screen. Slide to unlock LOVE IT!
6. Google apps provider FCs all the freakin time... (Never seen one FC on Vegan tab)
I don't mean to besmirch anyones hard work or good name, but Vegantab is the superior option.. I pity the foo that is using TNTLite 3.12
I tried Zpad, TnT Lite and Vegan 3. The only place I experienced slowdown after wake up was Vegan 4. I liked Vegan ROM better of course then TnT lite but this slowdown after wake up is deal breaker for me.
I've messed around with both over the past couple of days.. I can see pros and cons for each, but I do like the UI of VEGAn a little better.. more like my Droid
Can anyone point me to the installation directions? Thanks.
vegan + smartkeyboard pro!
+1 more for Vegan. For me it is more stable and just works better all around the main thing no aps disappear like in TNT. Don't get me wrong "Props" to all the ROM developers and please keep going!

What are you 12? To say that "you pity" someone who does not share your opinion is just juvenile. Then you post a second time just to say the same thing all over again:
"I don't mean to besmirch anyones hard work or good name, but Vegantab is the superior option.. I pity the foo that is using TNTLite 3.12"
The developers have all worked so hard on both of the roms to help the gtablet community while never asking for a thing in return. The things you listed above that make TnT lite "fraught with peril" have not been a problem with all users and do have fixes for those who have experienced one or more of the same issues as you.
I have both ROM's running, one on each tab in my house and each one serves a person differently. TnT lite is on my wifes machine because she is not as technically inclined as I am and does not want/need all of the features that VEGAn offers and it has been a rock solid ROM. I have VEGAn on my tab because of features that are available in that ROM. Each ROM offers a different experience based on user preference, wants and needs.
"IMO" is just that, it is an opinion and sometimes opinions are just better kept to yourself. What we don't need is a "fanboy" war, appreciate everything all of our developers have contributed and remember that without them the G Tablet would basically be a crippled bunch of electronic parts that none of us would be enjoying right now.

The language used in the original post was disrespectul, childish, and demeaning.
It may be true that we have "freedom of speech" to say what we want -- but that doesn't mean it is either helpful or appropriate. I vote for helpful and appropriate in this forum even if it means limiting things a little.
Not trying to flame anyone or start any wars. And I hope if posts like this become the standard here that the moderator will use his good judgement to keep this forum a constructive place.

Either way....thanks for all of the Devs. hard work...

Vegan versus TnTLite?

From what I've seen there are 3 devs working on Vegan and 1 on TnTLite. There also seem to be a ton more adopters of Vegan.
Currently I'm running TnTLite 3.1.4 because the first root/mod thread I landed on pointed toward 2.2.0. Is Vegan a better system though? Why is it garnering all the interest?

Longs story short... they are all working together. Rothnic, Roebeet, and GoJimi are all working on the VegaN together. When these tabs were first released (early November) and all the Hype started I believe that Roebeet was the first to successfully rip TNT apart to develop a more 'vanilla' version, hence the TNT Lite. About the same time Rothnic got a hold of the ZPAD (international version on GTab) firmware and started making it work here. I don't have all the details about where GoJimi came from but I think that he was working in quietly in the background with both of these guys (ahhhh the rumors). When the Advent Vega firmware came out they all decided to collaborate together to help develop a ROM based on that. I think that each has their own 'talent' and decide to work together to provide yet another option.
At, least I think that's how it all came about?
Between the three available ROMS it's all about personal preference. Like buying a car; it's just what suits you. The nice thing about the way all is set up is that technically you can test drive all three of them within an hour and decide for yourself.
Good Luck!
I personally, use TNT Lite. I went over to Vegan Tab for a short bit, then went back to TNT. I think I just got used to TNT and that is why I went back. There was nothing wrong with Vegan Tab, as it had a few different enhancements. However, TNT, felt like "the one" for me. We have been married for a month and a half now and couldn't be more happier.
I use TnT Lite myself. I tried an early build of Vegan, but TnT for me just seems to feel right for the GTab. But I agree with it2steve, both are excellent and it just comes down to personal preference. I suggest trying them both out, as well as CyanogenMod 6.1, and see which is right for you.
I guess that it is a very popular question for new Gtablet owners. there are several threads discussing the Pros and Cons of each ROM and there was a poll for it as well.
I like Tnt Lite for some features and I also like Vegan for the general UI. Just wondering will we see a hybrid version of TntVegan.
Actually, I am finding more fun to switch from one ROM to another ROM in a few weeks to try something new. I was on tnt lite 2.2, Vegan beta3, tnt lite 3.1.3, Vegan beta5.1 and then I am back to tnt lite 3.1.4.
I backup through CWM each time and I use Titianium backup to back up every apps I use.. (and it takes about 1 hour for me to switch ROM and restore most of my apps).
I have an N1, it is my first Android phone. I've been using plain old stock Android since the 2.1 days. I was convinced by users at another site I frequent to get a GTab.
Personally thought it'd be fun to play around with the GTab and make it function correctly through rooting (I had never done it before). I heard it was a great piece of hardware with a substandard operating system and purchasable at a great deal. Since purchasing it, I've been reading about development focused on GTab at XDA developers forums. The GTab is a very nice piece of hardware and I enjoy seeing the potential of it being unlocked day by day.
I've used both TnT Lite and Vegan. I only briefly played with stock TnT and almost immediately learned how to flash TnT Lite. In my opinion, it was alright, definitely better than TnT, but not what I was expecting when I first bought the GTab.
Since it was quite simple getting TnT Lite on the GTab, I considered flashing Cyanogen, but the lack of consistent updates made me reconsider, especially with the constant updates to TnT Lite and Vegan.
I've since moved on to Vegan which more closely matches stock Android in comparison to TnT Lite and I am quite happy with it.
My girlfriend was using my GTab while her piece of junk 1st gen MacBook was being worked on. Since getting it back, even after a complete data wipe and new OS install by a friend who works at Apple, it still doesn't function correctly, so now it just sits in the corner of the room and she uses my GTab when browsing the web and watching streaming video.
To my understanding, the XDA GTab community has just accessed the second core of the GTab's processor, so for me at least, these are exciting times indeed. The GTab has preformed better than expected and now, someday soon, it'll only get better.
If only there was a way to port over or convert iOS apps and games, I know my friends would all jump ship from iPad...well, I guess that kinda goes without saying.
I am a relative newbie to the gtab scene. I waited on the stock rom for the update from viewsonic, but due to many ongoing stability issues i decided to root and rom my tablet. I personally enjoy switching and updating, but i have tried both vegan and tnt lite. I really enjoy tnt lite, but its a personal choice. I just constantly check back, awaiting more updates and to see this tablet get faster and more "tablet like."
Both are good, take a look to a small poll that I create some time ago. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=894578
I like Tnt lite, but I think Vegan is a hair more stable.
I get less FC from Vegan.
But I like the features of Tnt lite.
BTW, which one is closer to stock android?
ive tried tnt and vegan and prefer vegan... but maybe thats because it works like id expect? not different and "tablet like". works almost as good as my phone! lol.. i wish we could get some of the phone guys over here to make roms! my phones rom is light years ahead of vegan...(pheonix) i wonder if those lil perks just cant happen on this tab? like power control in the drop down notification area.. seems like a no brainer if your making a rom? but vegan does work well, and fast... not a fan of the tnt look, reminds me of the nightmare stock set up!! i hated it...
but hopefully the roms get better and this tablet really shines!
Thanks for the backstory! I had been dying for an iPad but knew I really wanted something I could use cards/usb to get stuff in and out. I HATE being locked in like they do. But while the EPAD APAD stuff on ebay doesn't sound bad for $200 I wanted more and I didn't want to have it shipped from China. I was holding out for the NotionInk Adam but who knows if that'll ever happen.
With the stars aligned and all bills paid just after Christmas I had enough sitting there to do something. Just by chance I came across a link to the gtablet on sale at SEARS. I'd come across one in Office Depot a week before but dismissed it after seeing the stock TNT. Once I saw all the rooting/moding I RAN to Sears.
Purchase made I went for TnTLite 2.2.0 first cause that's the link I found, ran that way a while and then jumped to 3.1.4 about 2 days before jumping to Vegan51. I still have the backup of Lite 3.1.4 but I don't think I'm going back to it. I've already begun learning the interface and altering the icon spacing and all that fun stuff.
Just updated the kernal mod from cygna(sp)...today. It just seems to move faster and I actually like the front screen lock. Anyhow, very happy to have found the forum and that the devs are creating something we can actually USE with this hardware. Stock TNT = no purchase. I'd already walked away.
Glad I found that Sears ad
Tried both tntlite and vegan....prefer vegan..

First flash was TnT-lite 2.0, right after I unpacked it and let it fully charge. Second tab, bought about a week later, went thru zPad and VegaN, a couple of days on each Rom, but eventually ended with TnT-lite. I prefer the "tablet like" feel of it. The other Room's are pretty solid, but reminiscent a phone too much.

Which rom is better

Which rom is better in your opinion? Vegan or TNT
I have enjoyed Vegan more, only because i couldn't get the market to fix in tnt, but first try with vegan and it worked. That may be because i was doing something wrong in tnt, but that's it. I've been using vegan for 2 weeks now and i'ts very solid.
Which is better
I've tried TnT and VEGAn. TnT bombed the first time when I loaded 4.0. I switched to VEGAn and it worked straight away. I did, call me a sucker, go back and TnT 4.2.2 is working great for me. Only thing I miss from VEGAn is the ability to lock the screen.
What's in 4.2 that isn't in 4.1? I'm using 4.1 and everything is working. I am considering 4.2 but would like to know what the difference is. Do you know?
When I first got my gtab last week I flashed TnT. I was able to get the market running, but after a few hours it would pop a gapps error, and I would run the market fix again. Had to do this a few times a day.
I wiped and flashed Vegan and have been running it for the last 4 days with no issues. The lock screen is awesome and have had zero issues with the market
Highly recommend Vegan!

After messing around with the five or so availale ROMS, I decided to make the VEGAn 5.1 beta my daily driver, it and TnT lite are the most stable IMHO, I chose VEGAn over TnT because the news and weather genie was absent from TnT and the VEGAn web browser offers much more flexibility as far as options go. I'm a news junkie!
Also the On-Screen soft keys on the notification bar [HOME, MENU, and BACK] are fantastic additions to VEGAn since the keys on the device don't light up, which makes it real [email protected]%# when using the device in a poorly lighted room so that would be wonderful if that feature was kept.
I have to agree with Vegan. I bought my pad two days ago and decided to go with Vegan. Flash and the Market are already installed. And having the menu, home, and back on the screen really makes getting around easier.
Now If I can just figure out how to use the host USB port.
I would have to say vegan.
I like the notification bar on TNT better, but I find Vegan just slightly more solid.

Recently installed GAdam 1.1.0 and love it. Real nice and pretty simple UI. Running very stable. Didn't try Quad yet, played Angry Birds thou (LOL). Smooth transitions no FC on any app I tried. So, I believe I found the one I like and will stick with it till Honeycomb comes out (keep my fingers and toes crossed LOL).
vegan i would say
Also been running VEGAn - TAB V1.0.0B5.1

You can always check the changelog. It's usually a mix of enhancements and stock updates. Some are minor changes, some are more major.
4.2.0 updated the TnT base to stock 3588. And I added the Gingerbread keyboard and upped the frame rate to 60.
Same here..Vegan. Running about a month with no isses. Posted a 1825 on Quad. Am happy!
I gotta cast my vote for Tnt. I've been running it since January, and have had no issues at all, and the market fix worked like a charm. The one thing I will say is, I have a 5 year old who loves to play angry birds and play a drawing game, and she is at home with TnT which is the main reason I haven't tried a different ROM.
My vote is for VEGAn, I just couldn't get the hulu fix to work on TnT and when I flashed VEGAn onto my tab last night worked right away. I also got all 5 stars on the market.
I have had my gtab for about 2 weeks now and tried out TNT as a first shot and it was good till installed some app and scrambled it. After that I kept getting FC's all the time.
Decided to go to the gAdam yesterday and I must say it seem to be solid. I have not had any problems with the market, like I have seen else where, and I just love the interface.
Rock on guys keep up the great work on all of the roms.
A big thanks to all of the devs who are working on the gTab.
i just picked up this tablet for my sister and chose to go with TnT Lite 4.2/4.2.5 to speed it up a little bit and so she can download some games and apps.
i ran a quadrant score against my rooted Xoom (not overclocked) and got the same scores, between 2000-2100ish.
no problems whatsoever with this TnT rom and i am quite impressed at the speed of it. at times it seems snappier/quicker then my Xoom.
TnT Lite is what I am currently running. Of course there are a few things I dont but there are a lot of things I do like. Is a great stable rom. The widgets take up way to much space in landscape mode.
I also have played with Vegan, but have an issue with the switching of landscape mode. The standard home screen doesn't switch! Otherwise its a great rom.
have had mine for about 2 weeks.
i just installed caulkin's 1.0 ROM, then put clemsyn's patch on it got CIFS.
i was running Vegan for a week before that.
i would like to switch to the stock or NI browser, and i should have backed up the NI keyboard before going to caulkin's. but i'll figrure out how to download and put them on as APK.s

[Q] Which rom do you recommend?

I know, not another best rom thread. But I've been reading as many of these threads as I could and there still seems to be some disagreements among power users.
Right now, TnT lite vs Vegan 5.1. Am I missing something else here that is more stable?
I'm not sure there's THAT much difference in stability between these ROMs. Of course Vegan is heading toward a Gingerbread release which might be worth picking up soon.
A lot of it comes down to personal taste, as well as some particular things being a bit easier on one ROM or another.
I don't think you can go that wrong with either of them. That all said, I did vote for Vegan since "for me" it has worked best.
So someone actually picked the "idiot" option on the poll. Very classy. I will admit that the OP should not have even given the option to choose that since the "true idiots" will always show up and be true to their nature.
I enjoy Vegan 5.1 here.

To be fair, I was 1 of 2 who voted the idiot thing. Since I haven't got a g tab, not yet anyway. I'm still feeling the water before I decide to jump in. I am 70% sure I will get one. But once I get it, I want the most stable rom. You guys are nothing to me but guinea pigs.
Edit.
I'm the less techie between my boyfriend and I. I'm not going to be asking for his help at all, so I don't want to have to deal with apps crashing or infinite boot-up loops or such problems.
With vegan, do I still need to apply the fix for force closing?
Vegan has worked great for me with no additional "fixes". I use it to watch movies, surf the net, play games, and as an ereader. Probably 4 hours avg per day on it, and Vegan has given me no issues. I tried TnT lite as well, and while I saw no problems, I just preferred the feel of Vegan.
Vegan is a good Rom I used it for a while. I have been impressed with calkulins gtab rom. Very fast and nice tweaks.
I refuse to use Vegan simply because my serious disdain for Vegans in general. Petty? Sure. I don't care
So.. I use TnT Lite, and have for a while now. Quite stable, no major issues, the 5.0 upgrade was a bit of a pain but its been rock solid so far. Does everything I need it do. (To be fair, Vegan does too)
Though with the Gingerbread on Vegan soon, I may switch over to check it out..
May I ask what your disdain of vegan is about?
Ive run the gambit of roms on my gtab over the past two nights.
Vegan gingerbread + updated gb kernal rules them all.
And its experimental! This rom is headed in the right direction.

Based on these comments I recommend a ipad.
my g tab will get here tuesday, im in school and going to use it primarily to read textbooks on pdf and full screen jpeg scans of the books. it was either spend $400 this semester on books or get a gtab and magic wand scanner, figured id have more fun with the gtab than a book i wont have to buy books in future semesters plus i can use the internet for research and all that
so would you guys think the vegan gingerbread rom would be good enough for this, i know its still experimental. plus id like to be able to surf the net and view flash videos on a few different sites besides youtube.
There are a handful of little things holding back vegan GB but no show stoppers.
The gb keyboard has some issues (missing #s, no type ahead)
Market can be painful at times. There are a couple apps (like mvideoplayer pro) that I can't purchase and my apps comes up blank without a creative work around.
I believe the kernel is missing video hardware acceleration or there's something buggy with gfx/gl. Even with this issue it still scores a 2000 quadrant.
Latest version of Google maps FCs but 5.0.0 works fine.
For something that isn't even beta yet it is super nice and does an awesome job demonstrating the tablet capabilities of GB. Very tablet friendly.
